Wednesday: Barren Wasteland

Only TWO Concepts here on this rainy/snowy Wednesday here on Long Island, though one of these concepts fit right here at home. We have several readers of the blog and several people who have the ability to send in concepts. I know this batch was collected around New Year's so I expect the slowdown, but hopefully we can pick things up again. Even if you send in old competition entries, they're perfect for the blog. In fact I'll be doing that myself shortly. I feel that I can't criticize people for not sending in stuff if I'm not doing so myself.

We have a GREAT competition going on while we vote on a Concept of the Year logo, one that has a REAL PRIZE! Semiahmoo Peewee hockey, which serves the communities of White Rock and South Surrey in British Columbia, have come to us looking for a new, yet classic looking jersey to replace their Flyers Edge 1.0-looking copies. Find out more about that on the button on the side of the page. The winning entry will have their design used by the team. But that's not all! The winner will also see their jersey come to life in their own hands, as they will receive a jersey of their own! So if you want to see your work come to life, send in your work!

ENTRIES SO FAR:

Phil B.

REMINDERS:

4th Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
COTW January 5-11 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
2017 COTY Logo vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
Semiahoo PeeWee A1 Competition: (Entries Due Friday January 26 @ noon ET)

ON TO THE CONCEPTS!

Brendan P: New York Islanders Concept

I'll be honest. Because of my Islander fan bias, it doesn't lead me to like a concept more, but rather it leads me to scrutinize a concept more, partially because I already have strong opinions of the current look. Speaking of which we see the current look on the home blues in terms of striping pattern, but with teal trim adjacent to the blue stripe that normally separates the orange and white. The road jersey features a swap in colors from the regular jersey, plus the teal stripe in the same position as the home concept. The socks are patterned much better, fully matching the sleeve and hem pattern unlike the current look. The new logo is an adaptation of the Brooklyn-inspired NY logo we saw on the black jerseys last season, but with added trim of orange, blue and teal. The shoulder and pant logo is a modified Lighthouse logo from the fisherman-era (makes sense based on the inclusion of teal), but without all the waves behind the Montauk lighthouse, a slight downgrade. The reason I'm not too fond of this concept is that I don't think the teal and royal blue work together as well as the navy did with teal during the fisherman-era, as we see on the alternate. It's fine, but not ideal. I like the simplified wave on the hem, with the wave not continuing on the arms, as Brendan flattens out the striping. The collars are all lacking in orange. Otherwise a nice modernization of the Islanders, just a few design choices away from perfection.

Noah B: Greater West Sydney Giants (AFL) Concept

The Giants currently wear half and half jerseys at home, with orange on the top and black on the bottom with the white G logo on the border of the two. On the road they are white with a diagonal patch of black similar to what we see here, matching up with the angle of the G logo in orange. I like how the two ideas are meshed together here on this concept, because this pattern Noah made works well with the GWS branding, and surprisingly works well on a hockey jersey combined with that full-sleeve yoke pattern outlined in white. Honestly I'm not sure if the current socks would look better if they were replaced with a more simple half orange and half black pattern separated by a white stripe.

Rating: 95%

The WINNER of my Concept of the Week nomination is:

 NOAH B

 GWS GIANTS CONCEPT

Another week gone by here at HJC. Side note, Thursday and Friday I am visiting Philadelphia for the United Soccer Coaches Convention and the NWSL and MLS drafts. If anyone wants to meet up for lunch and give me a break from all that soccer, let me know because there's plenty of good food to be had at Reading Terminal Market. Otherwise have a great week and I'll see you next Wednesday here at HJC!
