Wednesday: The Circus is in Town

The Islanders are on their biggest road trip in a long time. 9 games on the road to span the entirety of the circus being at Barclays Center as well as the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament. Hopefully a different circus doesn't follow the Isles on the road. They won their first game of the trip last night at Detroit, their final game against the Wings at Joe Louis Arena, and visit Montreal tomorrow night.

As for us here, NEWS:

The 2018 Memorial Cup site and logo have been revealed. We are off to the Queen City (there's another nickname I will not mention, but if you desperately want to know, I'll tweet it out later @PhilBeckDesigns), Regina, SK for the 100th edition of the Memorial Cup, and since the Pats are one of the oldest junior hockey teams in Canada besides Brandon and Saskatoon, who hosted in 2010 and 2013 respectively, it's a good fit to have the tournament there. And for this one, the logo deviates from the template we have seen for the past 9, soon to be 10, tournaments.

2018 Memorial Cup Logo
(via Sportslogos.net)

No sponsor on the logo, red, silver and black, the classic poppy symbolizing the memorial aspect of the tournament, and a big 100. Solid logo and potentially one of the best since 2001, ironically enough hosted in Regina.

The Pairs Comp is in full swing as we work to develop an All-Star Game concept. Teams potentially in right now are listed on Saturday's recap post. They are due in a week and a half.

Just your standard COTW vote but that doesn't make it any less important.

Brooks F: St. Louis Eagles (AHL) Concept

First things first for you, the readers. This concept is already a Concept of the Week winner so please do not nominate it again. However, I'll explain to you why this won concept of the week instead. They took the Blues color scheme and gave themselves their own identity with a classic pattern combined with the full sleeve yoke. But what really carries this concept is the logo. Forward facing eagle in flight with the Gateway Arch in the background to tell you this is a true St. Louis team, albeit fictional at this point. Execution is flawless, but the only part I don't care for is the pant striping. Either make it match the striping here or make it match the NHL team's striping, which is absolutely no striping.

Rating: 96%

Lucas D: Philadelphia Flyers Concept

A common aspect of design here is to build a concept around a logo. Lucas does exactly that here by using the tail end of the P-logo as the striping pattern, and it looks brilliant on the home orange jersey, but tough on the road whites. The main issue is color balance. You want to include orange on that road jersey, however your pattern is predominantly black. Maybe if the striping was a bit smaller this would work better, and maybe add white under the striping pattern on the home oranges?

Rating: 77%

Mike F: Team Austria Concept

A major design idea I usually try with international jerseys is to incorporate the country's flag into the design in a major way. Mike does that very well right here with all of his concepts except the last one. On the first two, he has a center white stripe (surrounded by a little red on the first concept). I just wish the pattern was consistent on the arms of the first jersey with two red stripes, and on the socks of the second jersey with one white stripe. The alternate is a modern look with side panel striping in the same pattern as the flag and a full sleeve yoke. The vintage would look slightly better if the hem was matching the arms. Quick execution note: Stitching should not exist in the chest stripe of the first two.

Rating: 84%

Taylor R: Dallas Stars Concept

Taylor decides to throw the Stars back to their first years in Texas, and combine it with their current logo and color scheme. He separates the black and green completely, one of the major problems with the Stars first set and its full sleeve yoke. Nothing here really stands out to me though. Interesting fauxback look though and one I think the Stars should seriously consider, though they may go with a pure throwback if they did.

Rating: 82%

Zack H: Washington Capitals Concept

Weagle logo? Check. White shoulder yoke? check. I've mentioned numerous times how much of a sucker I am for that design aspect. I also love how you replaced the red in the logo with white on the home red jersey. Absolutely brilliant. The way these match is even more brilliant with the combination of the yoke on one jersey and the colored upper sleeve on the other. Execution note: You still have red on the tops of the socks of the road white uniform. Pant striping also should eliminate stitching in that area.

Rating: 87%

The Winner of my Concept of the Week Nomination is:

And thus ends my focus on hockey for today. Champions League soccer is in New York tonight with my Red Bulls so if you're reading this I'm probably either on my way, at the game, celebrating a win or drinking away my sorrows in the loss. Either way hope you enjoyed today's post and I'll see you next week.

Tuesday: St. Pats for St. Pat's Day

Hello again, and welcome, Hockey Fans, to this Tuesday's post! A pretty big story coming out of Toronto, as the Leafs officially unveiled their St. Pats throwback jerseys for St. Patrick's day!
I think it's fantastic! The style is loosely based off of the 1922-1925 St. Pats sweaters. The original version included light beige pants and gloves, but these will have a more appropriate green equipment, and a white helmet. I don't have any official pics of the back side, but the chest stripe continues all the way around the back side. Well, sorta...

All of the numbers are green and are heavily inspired by the font from the wordmark. The back numbers are placed on white panels, like a vintage jersey, and they have a little bit of a gap in between, showing some of the green of the chest stripe. That's at least from an unofficial picture that I saw on twitter. (lol) So it looks like the chest stripe is broken up, but a blank jersey would have a solid green back stripe.

These would be fantastic to see as an alt all year, but at the very least, they need to have these come out once a year for St. Patrick day! (Just imagine the Green Devils vs. The St. Leafpats on March 17th!)

My rating for these... 10/10!!! Let me know what you think about them in the comments below...

Also we have the pairs comp. starting up now, all entries need to be in by March 3rd!
We also have the Regular COTW voting! Don't forget to vote!

COTW Feb 10-16 vote
Pairs Comp due March 3
On to the Concepts!!!!

Matt G.- Kootenay Ice (WHL;CHL)
Matt here redesigns the Kootenay Ice with a new logo set! (Not made by him though)

  • I love the new logo. it's much better than the 90's stick-wielding monster!
    • Good job giving the other artist credit
  • The mountain striping pattern looks great!
  • The yellow stripe looks great on the road jersey...
  • I like the gloves
  • The yellow stripe on the blue jersey blends into the white and really creates the YOWSyndrome
  • The numbers could use some yellow, along with the rest of the main jerseys...
My rating: Everything overall is ok, but it seems a little bare, and could use something more... 7.5/10

Matt C.- Whalers/Hurricanes Cross (NHL)
Matt gives us the second concept of the day, and Whalers-Canes mix of eras!

  • I love the colors! The Canes should have never ditched this scheme!
  • I like the striping pattern...
  • Font looks great!
  • The recoloring of the logo is good

  • The white jersey should not have a silver outline, a green one would look much better...
  • The silver over all is distracting...
  • The Warning Flag pattern on the white jersey should not be reversed, both jerseys should have the same Warning Flag pattern
  • I'd also like to see some equipment

My rating: A good crossover, but it could still use some work... 7/10

Taylor R- Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL)
The third concept of the day comes from Taylor for the Columbus Blue Jackets!

  • Logo choices are fantastic!
  • I like the striping pattern, including the identical pattern on the breezers!
  • Font looks good
  • The silver not touching any white is a good design choice!
  • I like the blue breezers, instead of red. It really helps keep the CBJ from looking too much like the Rangers...

  • The silver seems a little unnecessary on the collar...
  • The overall design still feels too much like the Rangers

My rating: A great design for the CBJs!  I'd really like to see something like this if the CBJ redesign their sweaters next year! 9/10

Mike F.- Kazakhstan (IIHF)
Mike continues his IIHF redesign with Kazakhstan!

  • I like the darker color scheme for the regular uniforms!
  • The striping pattern is Absolutely fantastic!
  • The color balance on all the jerseys are all great!
  • The vintage jersey looks very vintage, and has that overall feeling of the 60's.

  • I don't like the the teal flags on all the jerseys...
  • The logo on the white jersey should have a little more blue behind the logo to avoid the YOWSyndrome
  • The gloves for the vintage alt should have the normal gloves, not a special pair with white

My rating: A fantastic set for a team that usually has Adidas/Nike piping crap... 9/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!

Zack H.- Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)
Zack give us the last concept of the day for the Vegas Golden Knights!

  • The striping pattern is good!
  • I like the balance between the gold and slate grey!
  • Black equipment looks good

  • Remember to eliminate the template lines through the socks, it looks like another stripe
  • The numbers look squished, the black stripe should be dropped down to be closer to the gold stripe, or touching the gold stripe.

My rating: A very nice concept that would be great for the Knights! It could still use a little bit of cleaning up... 8/10

Well that's all from me, you Tuesday writer, Chase! Come back for more!

Monday: Double Pens Blues

Welcome to the Monday post!

There won't be a minor league round up as there wasn't that much interesting unveiled this week, but it'll mean much a longer one next week.

The Pairs Competition is space trucking along, and with just over a week until the deadline, hopefully  you have emailed Ryan your team and the division you want. If you don't mention it until the deadline please be sure to mention the division you want to be in. If you don't do so, Ryan will do so for you. Also remember that Ryan holds discretion which division you are put in. You can be moved up to Advanced divisions but not down to Standard.

COTW has reset for the week, be sure to vote on the side of the blog!

Also, here's the vote from Saturday's post

COTW Feb 10-16 vote (Due Friday @ Noon EST)
Pairs Comp due March 3

On with today's concepts!

Vancouver Canucks Concepts (By: Zack H.)

+ Love the look of the updated stick in rink logo and a mostly green jersey together at last
+ Great striping pattern on both jerseys
+ Good colour balancing across the board
+ Good secondary logo choice
+ Good execution

- The numbers are too thin and the NOB is much too hard to read
-  Captain's A is too large
- The shoulder arch is too small and the tv numbers are too crammed with them

Rating: 7.75/10

Colorado Avalanche Concept (By: Taylor R.)

+ A good mix of classic striping and the good parts of the current alternate (the yoke comes to mind)
+ Numbers look gorgeous in blue
+ Taylor's execution is great as always
+ Surprised that the C logo works as a shoulder patch
+ Why hasn't this been adopted yet?!

- Maybe adding a little blue to the cuffs would give them some colour that maybe would look better

Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me!

Team Slovenia Concepts (By: Mike F.)

+ Loving the lack of neon green, while it helps to keep them from blending in with Slovakia or France, they don't need it on this set
+ The hem striping from the national crest looks excellent
+ Alternate has a really nice 90s vibe to it that would still work today
+ The vintage jersey also looks good, and fits the period

- Flag patches aren't necessary on the alternate
- Arms stripes on the home and road don't work with the curved stripes

Rating: 8.5/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ This jersey would be like if Pittsburgh shrunk the yellow upper arms and put in a matching hem stripe, and you know what, I really like this
+ Freeing the Penguin from his triangle prison looks good with as much yellow there is across the jersey
+ Black yoke gives it a good colour balance
+ Solid execution

- The numbers should stay the same as they are now
- Shoulder patches?!

Rating: 9/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ Love the Jagr era striping on the hems with the Lemieux era arm stripe, looks pretty solid together
+ Rest of the jersey holds up well, especially since it is both new and exactly what they have now
+ Solid execution across the board

- Colour balancing is off, the white jersey should have the yellow and black swapped
- Jerseys also need a shoulder patch of some sort
- NHL 100 logo looks better above the numbers imho

Rating: 8/10

Sunday: It's Like the Everlasting Fruit Cake!

Good afternoon all. Welcome back. I'd like to continue on with a former alternate jersey that just doesn't seem to die. That jersey is L.A's Burger King jersey. For some reason just keeps coming back like that dried, hard as a rock, near inedible fruit cake that elderly great aunt you have sends your family every year. Now, I'm somewhat of a fan of this jersey but like all good things that represent the 90's in one picture, I think that it should stay in the 90's.

It has shown up not once, but twice this year beginning with the Kings wearing them during warm ups before their game on Jan 14th against the Jets.

Photo from L.A. Kings Instagram
This was the first sighting of it. The second happened this past Friday with the Ontario Reign, the AAA affiliate, against the San Jose Barracuda.

Photo from Ontario Reign Instagram
Now if you're a fan of the jersey then this must be like Christmas (or a big tease) to you. However, it's just plain scary that this thing keeps popping up. Before you know it, some beer league team might request a jersey manufacturer such as Rebirth to create a variant of this and they would wear it with pride. Well I say DON'T! Leave this jersey design in the past where it belongs!

Anyways, we have the COTW voting going on as usual as well as the people who have entered in the Pairs Comp working diligently on their concepts.

Let's get to it!

Lucas D- Vancouver Canucks
Positives: What is really nice about this whole set is the fact that you took a alternate logo and successfully made it into the crest logo. The two different striping on the jersey works really well and, overall, it's a very simple but appeal set.
Negatives: I have no negatives for this jersey set.
Overall: 9/10

Mike F- Czech Republic
Positives: I'm really liking this series of different style jersey you have here Mike. The different eras really stand out and show your level of dedication to each country. Out of all the four, I must say that I enjoy the bottom jersey the best. I'd have to say the arm stripping really sticks out but a close second is the jersey above it.
Negatives: That top jersey's yoke is horrendous. Please, for the love of all that is beautiful, do not try to incorporate the flag as a yoke design.
Overall: 8/10

  Mike F- Slovakia
Positives: I'd have to say that keeping all these pretty simple works really well. It's nice to see that you have to jerseys that could work as primaries and one from the 80's era and one that could be from the 50's or earlier. All designs look really good.
Negatives: I don't really have any negatives on these jersey except going with blue pants on the 80's jersey. Red would have looked a lot better.
Overall: 8/10

Noah B- Czech Republic
Positives: Continuing with the Czech theme today, this design is wild. the split design is very daring and unique but being that you left the overall template traditional I have to say that you did a pretty good job of making sure that it doesn't look super busy.
Negatives: That being said, the only thing that holds this concept back is the different colored yoke. Not so much because of the fact that the shoulder's are different, but the fact that I can't how appealing it would be on the ice.
Overall: 8.5/10

 Ryan C- Montreal Candiens
Positives: The simplicity approach to a team who already has a simple but distinct jersey design? I like it Ryan. The simple two stripe design is a bold move on your part but I think you pulled it off. Well done.
Negatives: My only negatives about this design is the different striping on the pants. giving the pants a plain red or white stripe would work really well on such a simple design as compared to a single stripe with white accents.
Overall: 8.5/10

Tyler M.S.- New York Rangers
Positives: A road alternate is a concept that I'm a real big fan of and this design is pretty nice if I do say so myself. The simple striping at the hem with the blue arm ends works really well with the logo on the front of the jersey.
Negatives: I'd like to see that drop shadow on the numbers of the jersey and maybe laces. Other than that, This is a nice jersey.
Overall: 8.5/10

I can't pick a winner this week because we had so many good ones so you guys come up with one and I might choose one later in the comments section. Have a good week and I'll see you all this time next week.

Saturday: A Two Alarm Blaze

The winner of the COTW-Jaunary vote was Jake M's Penguins concept!

Full Results
Well done Jake! Many of us love the Penguins in yellow. When combined with a simple and effective logo, such as the one you have created here, it's a blueprint for success. I also love that the P is the old Pittsburgh Pirates' logo. We'll see this one again for the 1st Quarter Vote, right around the same time that the Playoffs will be starting.

The winner of the COTW vote for February 3-9 was Brooks and his St. Louis Eagles Competition winner!

Full Results
I mentioned what I liked about this concept last week after it won the competition. Brooks took home another very close vote here. Well done!

The COTW nominees for February 10-16 have been listed on the side of the page. Votes will be counted up until Friday at noon Eastern Time. We had 7 concepts nominated and seconded this past week. That exceeds the limit of 6 that has been set (check the rules). So I took the two concepts that were thirded and placed them in the COTW vote. Thus proving that you should still nominate a concept that you like even if it has already been seconded.

Here is an updated list of the teams that have declared so far for the 2017 Pairs Competition. You can declare your team anytime and it is not required. It simply helps me plan a presentation schedule.

Josiah B & Jake M
Brad D. & Jay S.

JJ & DT Concepts
Jets96 & Brooks F
SteveM & Brendan P.
Noah B. & William B.
BurkusCircus & Phil B.

All Presentations and Teasers are due on March 3rd!

I really enjoy Steven G's Friday posts even more when he ranks jerseys. Lists are great talking points because we all have our own opinions and are willing to go to great lengths to discuss them. Steven's post yesterday drew a lot of attention. I could sense that you guys wanted to give your opinions on the NHL's current 3rd jerseys as well. So here is your chance...

Friday: NHL Uniform Countdown - Third Jerseys

Hello folks!

Do you remember back in the fall when I ranked the home and road jerseys of each NHL team?  I've been meaning to do the same for third jerseys, and I've decided now's as good a time as any.  This time though I'm going to do it all in one post, quickly counting down to number 6 and then I'll provide longer reviews of my top five jerseys.

I also want to note that I'm only ranking full-time third jerseys.  I'm not including any outdoor game jerseys (unless they were already third jerseys), any limited occasion vintage jerseys, or even any 50th anniversary jerseys.  I might rank all those specialty jerseys in a future post though.

Okay, here we go!

15.  Tampa Bay Lightning
I don't mind the black, but I dislike the "Bolts" script and the striping is generic.

14.  Columbus Blue Jackets
This jersey would be much, much better without vintage white.

13.  New York Islanders
It's a decent looking jersey, but it's not a good look for the Islanders in my opinion.

12.  San Jose Sharks
I think this jersey is underrated, but it's still not great.

11.  Carolina Hurricanes
I like how unique this jersey is, but it's starting to look dated, especially the number font.

10.  Minnesota Wild
This could challenge for the top spot if it used their primary logo on the front, and if it had no phantom yoke.

9.  Vancouver Canucks
I like this jersey on it's own, but it's just too similar to their home jersey.

8.  New York Rangers
I do think this jersey is overrated, but I also don't think it's a bad jersey, if that makes sense.

7.  Washington Capitals
I'll admit this jersey is dated, but I still like it.  I wouldn't want it as their home jersey though.

6.  Ottawa Senators
I like this as a third jersey, but it shouldn't be promoted.  The "O" logo isn't primary logo material.

5.  Colorado Avalanche
Colorado's third jersey is simple and modern, which I think works well in this case.  It also has a great font, and a very solid logo which both shows state pride and honours the city's previous NHL team (although, I don't think this logo should become the team's primary logo).  Sometimes I wonder if this jersey would look better paired with burgundy pants, but it's not like I dislike the navy blue pants.

4.  Anaheim Ducks
Not too long ago, the trend in the NHL was to use dark and drab colours.  I'm so glad those days are over, I much prefer colourful jerseys like this orange option from the Ducks.  I also like how this jersey combines two different era's, using elements from both their Might Duck days (main logo and hem stripe pattern) and their current identity (sleeve pattern, fonts, colours, and shoulder logo).  Once again though, I don't think this jersey should be promoted, as I don't think the Mighty Duck logo should return as the team's primary logo.

3.  Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers are another team that have found success (jersey wise) by using a bright colour as the main jersey colour.  The historical aspect of this jersey is also nice, especially since they kept unique details like the shoulder numbers and the overlapping collar.  Although it would have been even more accurate if they used a larger shoulder yoke, plus I think the shoulder numbers would look better in a larger yoke.

2.  Boston Bruins
I loved the Bruins' 2016 Winter Classic jersey as an outdoor game jersey, but I wasn't so sure I'd like it as a full-time third jersey.  Well, it turns out I do like it as a third jersey (as you could probably tell by its ranking).  I thought the logo might be too vintage for anything other than a Winter Classic game, but I've decided it works for a franchise as old as the Bruins.  I'm also not normally a fan of vintage white, but I don't mind it on this jersey.  The only thing I don't like is the brown in the logo, I think it should be black instead.

1.  Calgary Flames
I had Calgary at number 29 in my ranking of home and road jerseys, but their third jersey comes in at number one.  I love the bright colours of this jersey, they're especially fitting for a team called the Flames.  I like the history behind this jersey as well, the Flames wore this design for their first 14 years in Calgary (as well as seven years in Atlanta), and they won a Stanley Cup in this jersey back in 1989.  Hopefully this jersey gets promoted next year, and I'm not just saying that because of how bad their current jerseys are (although that's a factor as well).

What do you all think of these rankings?  Are there any jerseys you think I'm totally wrong about?  Who would you have as number one?  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

The regular COTW vote is the only vote this upcoming week.  As always, you can expect the poll to be up sometime later tonight.  The entry phase of the Pairs Competition is ongoing as well, and the deadline is now only two weeks away (March 3rd).

COTW Feb 10-16 vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)
Pairs Competition entries (due March 3rd @ noon Eastern)

Team Latvia, by Mike F:
Mike starts us off today with a Latvia concept for his EA Sports series.  I like the two primary jerseys, the double stripes on the light jersey and single stripe on the dark jersey both look good.  Although, I think the colourful logo (Latvia's Coat of Arms) isn't a good fit, I prefer the maroon and silver version Latvia currently uses.  The logo fits better on the third jersey though, since blue was added to the jersey and equipment.  I also (surprisingly) like stripe-less sleeves on that jersey, it's an interesting and unique look.  Last of all, I love the vintage jersey.  The V design with the small logo looks great, and the name in the back stripe is perfect.
Rating: 8/10

New Jersey Devils, by Lucas D:
With the Devils set to get new jerseys next season, Lucas has created this concept which combines their current and former jerseys.  The end result looks good to me, I think the red jersey is especially nice, but the white jersey isn't bad either.  I'm also a fan of the square shoulder yokes, they make the jerseys feel a bit more modern.  There's only one change I'd suggest (and it's very minor), which is to use black collar inserts on both jerseys.
Rating: 8/10

San Jose Sharks (Identity Swap), by Lucas D:
After creating his Devils concept, Lucas took the design and used it to make a Sharks "Identity Swap" concept.  I do like the jerseys in this colour scheme as well, but the logo is the most impressive part of this concept.  As you can see it combines the letter S (and a subtle J if you look at it the right way), with a shark's fin and tail.  For the most part I think the logo is great, but the fin looks a bit forced to me (although I have no suggestions to improve it).  Also, I'd recommend shifting the S/tail/fin part of the logo a bit to the left, to even up the blank space within the circle.
Rating: 8/10

Team Canada, by Noah B:
Next up we have a Team Canada concept from Noah, which feels both familiar yet different (a good combination).  It's familiar because the striping pattern is close to their 2010 Olympic jerseys, just with bolder stripes and a yoke on the red jersey.  The logo is what makes it feel different, it's not necessarily the maple leaf shape you expect as a primary logo for Team Canada, but I think it's a great choice.  It gives this concept an old-school look, yet it's a look which I think would look good in any era.  I also like how black was kept to the equipment only.
Rating: 9/10

Chicago Cubs, by Chris W:
For our fifth and final concept, Chris has re-designed the Chicago Cubs as a hockey team.  The jerseys he has created combine both baseball and hockey aesthetics, with some unique (and positive) results.  I particularly like the pin-stripes on the home jersey, and the vintage "vest" look of the third jersey.  I'm also a fan of all the logo choices, and the Wrigley Field patch Chris designed is nice as well.  However, my favourite part of this concept is the "Let's Play Puck" hanger effect in the collars, I love little details like that.
Rating: 9/10 and my COTW nomination!

That's all folks!
