Tuesday: Rooks, Ducks, Bishops, and Leafs

Hello again, and welcome, Hockey Fans, to this Tuesday's post!

Well, there's not a whole lot of news. Well jersey news anyways!

The NHL trade deadline is quickly approaching, and we've already seen some crazy trades.

Ben Bishop got sent to LA for Budaj, then Hanzal and White got sent to Minnesota for a ton of picks, and then Boyle moved to TOR, Jordie Benn moved to MTL, Burrows got sent to OTT, and Shattenkirk got sent to WSH! It's not even Deadline Day, and we've seen a ton of crazy moves!

I've already heard the Giroux might be on the move, as well as Duchane... I guess we'll see what happens next!

Don't forget to vote!

On to the Concepts!

Matt C.- New Jersey Devils-Colorado Rockies Mash-up (NHL)
Matt starts off the day with a Devils-Rockies history mash-up!

  • The color scheme is great! I really like that you used a red base for the dark jersey, to reflect the Devils more.
  • I also like the overly complicated collars, as that's something both teams have done before.
  • The number and font choice is great!
  • Both striping patterns are fantastic!

  • I don't really like the New Jersey patches, they're not very creative...
  • The numbers should not be squished together
  • The main logo could also use some more yellow

My rating: This is a fantastic idea for a series, and it's been really cool too see what you've turned out! This one is 8/10!

Lucas D.- Anaheim Ducks (NHL)
The next concept of the day goes to Lucas and his Anaheim Ducks concept!

  • Good logo choices!
  • I love the Mighty Ducks throwback-esque look with the striping pattern
    • I also like how the striping pattern is identical to each other
  • I also like the the whole concept is orange heavy
  • Collars look good

  • I don't like the phantom yoke... Those never look good, and never work...

My rating: A great Ducks concept that would be a great look to roll out with Adidas 8/10

Taylor R.- Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL)
Next up we have a Toronto Maple Leafs Fauxback, a heritage jersey to the St. Pats.

  • I like the logo on the front. A good use of current and throwback logos.
  • I also like the vintage striping pattern
  • Canvas breezers looks great! I'm assuming that the gloves would be the same?
  • I like the choice to use the white numbers outlined in green

  • I'm not entirely sure about the canvas helmets... I know the Leafs wore it for their first St. Pats throwback, but it still doesn't look good.
  • Also the Leaf patches on the shoulders are lit... (No, I'm not usually one to make that kinda joke, but I'd imagine that many people would if this concept was real. And you're always supposed to treat a concept like it's real)
  • I also don't like how the template eats into the chest stripe. I get that the current St. Pats throwback does that, but the Centennial Classic jersey didn't...

My rating: A great fauxback look for the Leafs! 8/10

Taylor R.- Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL)
Taylor's second concept of the day is another Maple Leafs third jersey concept!

  • I love the fauxback striping pattern
    • The Northwestern Stripes look great!
  • I like the simplified numbers and number font. No extra outlines keeps it from being too busy
  • I love the Toronto wordmark on the helmet

  • I don't like the double outline on the Logo. It clutters up the look
  • I also don't like the stripes on the breezers for the same reason

My rating: This would be a fantastic alt, and I hope the leafs unveil something like this in a few years! 9/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!

Mike F.- Ukraine (EA Sports IIHF)
Mike finishes off today with a concept for the EA Sports IIHF Ukraine!

  • I like the sleeve length yokes!
    • The pattern is also fantastic!
    • I also like how the pattern of the sock doesn't reach all the way to the bottom
  • I like the logos, although the symbol without the shield is better.
  • I really like the double blue color scheme on the 1st alt.
  • I also like the yellow buckets here. They work really well!

  • The alt has a decent idea, and even though I don't mind a well done gradient, this one is not. It's barely noticeable, and it looks like an afterthought.

My rating: Your concepts and your talent keeps getting better and better! 8.5/10

Well that's all from me, you Tuesday writer, Chase! Come back for more!

Monday: G-Flames

Welcome to another Monday post on HJC!

RIP Alaska Aces (1989- 2017), Boomer the Polar Bear will be missed...also where will Scott Gomez play next lockout?! I'd image they will return when the Alaska economy recovers but it's a shame.

Other  League Roundup

Did you know England has a decently successful top European hockey league? Well they do, and while they don't compete against the top Swedish and Finnish teams, they do compete against tier 2 teams from Russia, Finland, Sweden, and top tier teams from the Alps legaue, Norway etc. Last year they announced they'd allow they'd add the Milton Keynes Lightning in 2017, but now they've also announced the Guildford Flames will be promoted too. Wonder what the Flames look like?!'s exactly what you're thinking.

Photo from EIHL Official Twitter
It's not quite original, but to be fair it looks pretty solid. The colour scheme is different enough (there is actually some light purple near the yellow outline) I could tell them apart. It's nice to see the Flames '89 script (famous for the trainer sweaters in the team photo) being used by someone. For a league thats logos look more like pub logos most of the time (or do a similar thing this logo does with the Flames to Buffalo's goat head logo), I can dig it.

Rating: 7.5/10

Now their jerseys are also familiar, though these haven't been used by the Jets since they were in Atlanta and looked a lot worse.

Photo from EIHL Official Twitter
So a Flames copy team wears Thrashers jerseys that match their colour scheme better than the Thrashers away jerseys ever did from 2007-11? Yes this is the case. The jerseys even have the triangle pattern on the collar if you look carefully. I mean to be fair, considering their logo fits so well, it's almost as if they were gifted these!

Rating: 8/10

The Allen Americans put their name to good use by sporting jerseys so patriotic I thought Captain America was going to come onto the ice on a bald eagle carrying a Chevy.

Photo from Allen Americans Official Twitter
These not only work as patriotic jerseys, but just jerseys in general. The colour balancing on this jersey is surprisingly done well considering what is being attempted. The logo is absolutely gorgeous, so much so I'd like to see that use more often. the choice of red gear, including helmets, was a good one as it makes the stars on the yoke stand out more. Maybe one change I would make would be a block font but I'm impressed with how Allen remains one of minor hockey's best.

Rating: 9/10

Moving to the American major junior scene, the Green Bay Gamblers played on the cheese thing the Packers (and Wisconsin in general) has with these cheesy jerseys

Photo from Green Bay Gamblers Twitter
I'm not sure is Cheese is a colour now, but taking the Bruins alternate and making it look like a brick of cheese is...interesting. It's obviously and unapologetically a gimmick but a fun one at that. It isn't like they just make their logo look cheesy or but a cheese hat on the leopard, no they put effort into this. The shoulder patches only add to this! Writing Cheese as the primary logo thought is a bit much, and takes away from this as a Gamblers and advert for cheese?!

Rating; 8.5/10
Got a team outside of the NHL who's unveiled a jersey a jersey? Want it reviewed? Post a link in the comments and I'll see what I can do!

Pairs competition due date is coming up! Entries are due Friday @ Noon EST. I can safely say this will be entertaining as any of the other ones we've held. Stay tuned on the design blog starting next week for presentations and previews.

On with today's 5 concepts!

Vegas Golden Knights Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ Subtle V on the arms and hem look excellent
+ Aside from the missing red (which is lateral) it's nice to see the 3 logo colours this way, particularly on the white jersey
+ Something about the WHA style WIN/EDM collar looks pretty nice in gold and black
+ Good execution

- Where is the shoulder patch?
- Grey jersey needs white on it to balance the occurs more
- Gloves are too plain

Rating: 8.5/10

Minnesota Wild Concept (By: Tyler M.S.)

+ The Minnesota white jersey seems to be a point of contention between two schools of thought: both agree the current is amazing, but is it better than what they once had? I think yes but there are a lot of fans of the first Edge white jerseys. this This is a very nice compromise
+ You've managed to make white and wheat work together with some well placed arm stripes
+ Love the Northstars striping
+ Good execution

- One thing I might have changed is the collar to how the original had, or at least make the insert wheat since it would never touch the white
- The biggest flaw with this jersey is the lack of a shoulder patch, Minnesota has a few logos to chose from, one would work

Rating: 8.75/10

St. Louis Blues Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ While it did eventually grow stale, for a period the Blues had the best jersey in the NHL with that roundel logo front and centre, along with navy blue being the primary colour
+ Striping is simple enough, it's nothing too special but I like how the white and blue look together on the home
+ Decent execution

- The biggest slaw with his cocnept is how simple it is. The upper jersey, particularly the white jersey's have nothing but a smaller shoulder patch. The pants are plain, the gloves are plain, the collar is even plain, adding a yoke to the white jersey, a more interesting collar and maybe some yoke stripes or colour on the pants would help spice things up
- The shedding on the jersey looks off. Shading should be a darker version of the the colour of the  jersey, so the blue jersey should have darker navy shadows, not grey, on top of that the grey not eh white jersey is too dark except for the socks
- No front numbers on the helmet

Rating: 5.5/10

Philadelphia Flyers Concept (By: Taylor R.)

+ The striping..I's gorgeous...I mean New York does the whole 4 stripe thing...but the Flyers can do that and add tail flares...I like them
+ Colours are balanced well, orange numbers might be a bit much for some but I really like them
+ Shoulder yokes are aces
+ Prefect execution

- The arm stripes could use the tail flair in it too
- You know, a black helmet would look great

Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me!

Team Japan EA Sports NHL Concepts (By: Mike F.)

+ Japan is a fun team to make concepts for. The lack of a traditional logo and having to use the rising sun as a logo forces one to be creative and rely on striping. These aren't an exception. The arm striping is a rising sun!
+ Vintage jerseys continue to be excellent from Mike, particularly that yellow jersey
+ These would look amazing in an NHL game, since Japan has been featured in every game I've bene remember (Wakabayashi)
+ Great execution

- The flag patches aren't necessary, but I've come to realize they're there because of the games using them as filler
- I should like to see some blue or black in the home and road (similar to the international football team does

Rating: 9/10

Sunday: Catching Up With an Old Friend

Hi everybody. Welcome back to another Sunday post. If you were like me, you watched as much of the Stadium Series game as possible. And if you are also like me, you're happy that the Penguins won. That's besides the point though. Today I'm not going to talk about how the jersey looked during the game but instead about what the NHL did during the week coming up to the event.

The NHL has been taking around a make-shift museum made out of a tractor trailer called the NHL Fan Arena. This past Thursday they had it parked near my work so I went in and took a few pictures (pictures were allowed if anybody is concerned).

All Photos from My phone!

Also, I happened to see Iceburgh, the Penguins' mascot, with the Stadium Series Jersey on so I kindly asked him if he could pose for a picture. Fun Fact about me: I grew up next to Iceburgh's parents (Mr and Mrs Iceburgh we'll call them) and Iceburgh treated my brothers and I like family so it was nice to see that Iceburgh is still done by the same person. Thanks again Iceburgh!

You guys know what's less than a week away? Your entries for the Pairs comp. Also, don't forget to vote for the COTW!

Ok let's get to it!
Anthony C- Italy
Positives: Compared to what Italy already wears the white jersey is a big improvement. The stripe being designed in the way of the Italian flag is a really nice touch and the two tone blue jersey really gives the dark jersey more character.
Negatives: That logo is huge on the front of the jersey as well as the numbers. Also, you don't have any TV numbers. The dark socks being two toned doesn't look that good.
Overall: 6.5/10

Lucas D- New Jersey Devils
Positives: The whole uniform overall is really nice Lucas. You can't stray to far from a traditional style uniform for the Devils and I think that you did a pretty good job with the stripping and all back get up.
Negatives: I honestly don't have any negatives for this jersey. You did a good job creating a traditional black jersey for the Devils.
Overall: 9.5/10 COTW NOMINEE!

Mike F- Germany
Positives: Oh Germany. Such a strange history when it comes to being ruled. I must say that you did a excellent job of making different era jerseys for Germany. Each one harkens to different times of the past 100+ years? My favorite out of all is the blue with that angled hem striping.
Negatives: I don't see any negatives other than those red pants on the top jersey. Make those black.
Overall: 8.75/10

 Ryan C- Dallas Stars
Positives: The chest stripe looks really good On the white jersey. That green just really pops out. Oh, and overall excellent job on the execution but you already knew that Ryan.
Negatives: The chest stripe is just overdone that it it seems like something that would just be a copy of another said NHL team's identity, but it still works.
Overall: 9/10

Ryan H- Finland
Positives: Finishing up with the head honcho of the blog, The chest stripe with the crest works really well on the WCH jersey. couple that with the hem being matched on the sleeves and this would have been a much better alternative for Finland last year.
Negatives: My only issue is that there isn't a back to this. I really like it but show the back in some representation please.
Overall: 8.5/10

Well that's everything I got today. I hope you guys enjoy the pictures and I'll see you all next week.

Saturday: What's That On Your Pants?

The winner of the COTW vote for February 10-16 was Jake M!

Full Results
This was a head-to-head battle between two Calgary Flames concepts. Jake's proved to be far more popular with the HJC readers than Taylor's was. This was our first repeat winner of COTW for 2017!

The new COTW nominees have been listed on the side of the page. There are four to choose from this week. If you're logged into a Google account then the poll will appear for you and you will be able to have your vote counted up until Friday at noon Eastern

Friday at noon Eastern Time is also the deadline for Pairs Competition entries. Next week I'd love to be able to post everyone's Teasers. That will be followed up with presentations beginning on Monday, March 6, likely on the HJC Design Blog.

Just over a week ago Steven G's Friday post ranked the NHL's current 3rd jerseys. This lead to me giving you guys the chance to rate the jerseys yourself. As promised here are the results of that vote.
(jersey representations by Steven G.)

3rd Place - Edmonton Oilers
The popularity of this jersey has caused the Oilers to possibly adopt it as their new home sweater, for at least the 2017-18 season.

2nd Place - Ottawa Senators
The final rankings will show that the older 3rd jerseys have lost a bit of their shine and are ranked lower than the newer ones. However, Ottawa bucks that trend as this six year old jersey was ranked by you guys as the 2nd best full-time alternate in the NHL right now.

1st Place - Calgary Flames
Steven G. ranked this #1 on his list and collectively you guys have done the same. I am not a fan of teams promoting their 3rd jerseys to full-time status just because they are popular, but there are exceptions to every rule. Calgary should be one of those exceptions. The Flames should just look at the team that shares the province of Alberta with them to learn that switching to this jersey (and a matching white one) full-time could mean significantly increased jersey sales.

The remainder of the rankings shakes out as follows:

We are two months into NHL teams wearing the NHL 100 patch somewhere on the sleeve of their jerseys. That's enough time for me to declare that it looks awful. I would say that only Toronto's placement of the patch works. I highly doubt the placement of the logo will change for next season, but I have come up with my own idea of where I would put the logo. This would not interfere with any team's stripes or patterns and every team would be able to wear it in the same location.

Let me know what you think. Is this a good idea?

I received a couple of pictures this week from a reader named Kyle Z. He says he checks out the blog everyday and he wanted to share a couple of jerseys from Michigan high school teams that were noteworthy.

Photo: Kyle Z.
The first jersey belongs to Hartland High School, whose team colours are Navy and Yellow. What really sticks out is the fantastic use of white pant shells by this team. I really thought that white pants would should dirt, grime, and puck marks over a season. However this picture was taken recently and it shows that the white pants can hold up through the first five months of a season, at least. That or the players or equipment managers do a great job of washing the shells after each use.

The second jersey belongs to Livonia Stevenson High School, which is the team that Kyle coaches. Hardcore HJC readers may actually recognize this sweater from our Chicago Express ReDesign we held last February. Kyle liked JJ's winning entry enough that he modeled his team's 2016-17 jerseys after it. Pretty cool.

My thoughts on the Leafs' St. Pats specialty jersey...

Friday: A Post

Hello folks, welcome to the HJC post for Friday, February 24th, 2017!  I'm going to keep the intro nice and short today (besides writing out the date the long way), as there's not really anything I want to talk about this week.  I could have discussed tomorrow's Stadium Series game (which I had kind of forgotten about), but I won't have much to say about it until after the game.  Another option was to review Toronto's new St. Pats jersey, but Chase and Brendan have already covered that.  So let's just move on with this post.

Your reminders for the next 163.5 hours include voting for the February 17-23 COTW (the poll should be up later tonight), and the deadline for the Pairs Competition (which is now only a week away).

COTW Feb 17-23 vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)
Pairs Comp Presentations (due next Friday @ noon Eastern)

Uxbridge Bruins, by Anthony C:
Anthony brings us our first concept today, which is for the Uxbridge Bruins of the Provincial Junior Hockey League.  I like the striping patterns used for both jerseys, the dark jersey is based off of Boston's current third, while the white jersey is similar to Boston's 1939-48 white jersey.  The logo is pretty good as well, it uses the Hershey Bears' bear and the style of Boston's secondary mark.  I don't like the yellow player's name on the white jersey though, a solid black name would be easier to read.  There's also several execution errors, the shoulder logos should be split in half between the front and back view, plus they're backwards on the back view right now.  The sleeve number on the front view of the player's right sleeve should be a 5, the sleeve numbers also shouldn't go outside the jersey, and the sock stripes are too high.
Rating: 6/10

Detroit Red Wings, by Ryan C:
Our second concept is for a more well known team, it's a Detroit Red Wings concept from Ryan.  He uses the Red Wings' retro D logo as the primary logo, and a simple striping pattern like what they wore from 1934-61.  I do think this striping pattern looks good, but it's also not that interesting of a choice.  Using their D logo as the primary is a more intriguing decision, and I think it's a good choice for this concept (even though I wouldn't want it to replace their winged-wheel in real life), the D logo looks nice on the front of the jerseys.  As for the execution, the stripes are all too flat, they need to follow the curvature of the 3D template.
Rating: 7/10

Team Poland, by Mike F:
We also have two International concepts from Mike today, starting with this Team Poland concept.  I think all four jerseys look good, I especially like the alternate and vintage jerseys.  The sublimated waving flag of the alternate jersey is fun and unique, while the vintage jersey just looks beautifully classic.  The two primary jerseys are solid designs as well, but I think they could be improved if the thin stripes were made a bit thicker.  Execution is mostly good, except the sock stripes are too high.
Rating: 8/10

Team Italy, by Mike F:
For his second concept, Mike takes on Team Italy.  I've always liked how Italy uses blue as well as the green and red from their flags, and I think this concept uses all those colours nicely.  The primary jerseys in particular incorporate the flag colours in an interesting and unique way.  However, I think the white jersey should include some blue as well, maybe in the numbers.  Also, I'm not a fan of the Italian Coat of Arms as the logo.  The alternate jersey is a bit wacky and very 90's, but I think that's the idea so it serves its purpose well.  Finally I love the vintage jersey, everything about it works great together, I especially like the lighter shade of blue and the leather coloured gloves.
Rating: 8/10

Washington Capitals, by Lucas D:
Last but not least, we have a Washington Capitals concept Lucas.  The striping pattern used here is nice, it hints towards their original jerseys with the contrasting yokes, but it mostly goes in a new direction.  About those yokes though, I think they might look even better if they were a bit smaller, more of a standard height instead of these lower arched yokes.  As far as logos go, I like how the wordmark was recoloured to more closely resemble the Capitals original logo, but I wish the Weagle was still around as a shoulder patch.
Rating: 8/10

That's all folks!
