Monday: Adidas Alternate Perspective

Welcome to another HJC Monday post!

Of course the Adidas jerseys have generated quite a bit of thought about which teams nailed it and which teams failed it. Colorado, Carolina and Minnesota are in the former category, while Nashville, New Jersey and Ottawa are in the later. We have yet to see the away jerseys, but unless there's another Carolina or Minnesota away, they'll be similar to the home, with the exception of Vegas.

By now you've likely heard the HJC Podcast regarding the Adidas jerseys, reviewing  all of them, and you know my thoughts on them. However, a good friend of mine, who is an HJC reader as well as jersey collector and hockey aesthetic aficionado, has his own list. I decided to enlist his help for this, as while we agree on a lot of jerseys, there are certain ones we agree to disagree on or have opposite opinions of. Usually he's able to find the good in jerseys I don't like, or the flaws in jerseys I like to help further my opinions and more nuance. With that said, here's Corey's take on the 31+ Adidas jerseys unveiled.

Anaheim Ducks - Nothing new to see here. I was hoping that they would fix the striping on the white jersey so that they don't have identical striping on the home and away. The phantom yoke is still on the home jersey, but they still look good overall. 6.5/10 Arizona Coyotes - Nothing new with these jerseys either and I don't think they needed to. Nice jerseys and the black on them is growing on me 6.5/10 Boston Bruins - Only minor change to the jerseys are that they eliminated black from their numbers on the home jersey and will now use the same colours as they did on their first alternate under Reebok. The yellow numbers with a white outline works much better. 7/10 Buffalo Sabres - Buffalo has eliminated the piping but kept the grey border on the stripes. Eliminating the grey striping would have bumped up the rating of these, especially the away jersey where the grey is hardly visible. They get points for looking better but still slightly underwhelming 5.5/10 Calgary Flames - I still don't know why they keep the Alberta and Canada flags on the shoulder. Yes, I understand that they play in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Having said that, Calgary is not the capital of Alberta or Canada. It's just a city. The mountain logo shoulder patch from the script alternate would have been much better. They did follow the trend of removing the piping so it is an improvement. 5/10 Carolina Hurricanes - Wow! These jerseys are beautiful. The black on the hem is fantastic. One criticism of Carolina since day one is that their uniforms look like pyjamas. The black gives a nice break from the red. And we see the return of the warning flags (they were on the alternate jersey so they never really left, but I digress). The way they executed the warning flags covers all their bases. Fans of the warning flags are happy to see them back and people who think they're tacky are happy that they're not prominent. Overall great job. 9/10 Chicago Blackhawks - When you already have the best jerseys in the league, there is no need to make any changes. 9.5/10 Colorado Avalanche - When you have a season as bad as they did, what better thing to do than to go back to the look when the team achieved its most success? That exactly what Colorado did here. Now I know some people were looking for the alternates to become the primary home jersey, but this appeases traditional fans. The Colorado Rockies logo doesn't work as a primary logo either, as the only connection with the clubs is that they played in the same city. They are different franchises and should have separate identities. Keep the Rockies logo as an alternate down the line. 7/10 Columbus Blue Jackets - Just one minor change here. A new font. The jersey still looks fine. No cannon logo as the primary logo, but fingers crossed for that to happen soon. 6/10 Dallas Stars - Now one Dallas is one of my favourite jerseys in the league. Having said that, it would have been nice to see matching striping on the home and away. Instead it's exactly the same as before. One minor addition is the words "Victory Green" inside the collar. 6.5/10 Detroit Red Wings - Detroit looks how Detroit always looks. It's a classic design and should remain that way. Well that is until they put a Little Caesars add on their jersey...that thought makes me very sad. For now let's just enjoy them as they are. 7.5/10 Edmonton Oilers - While I like that they darkened the blue, I am not a fan of the thin stripes. I was hoping for the exact same design with the darker blue. As of this writing I have not seen the away uniform, but where I was expecting a white version of the Orange they wore up until last season I'm now expecting to see the aways look very similar to what they wore last season. Also disappointing to see the numbers back on the arm as I was a fan of them being on the shoulder. Overall I'm let down by these. 5/10 Florida Panthers - Despite rumours that they were going to have changed to their uniforms, the jersey has remained in tact from the jerseys unveiled for last season. I'm happy that they didn't change anything as I'm a fan of the new look. Switching the patch to the arm and numbers to the shoulder is unique and makes the jerseys stand out. 7/10 Los Angeles Kings - Much of the same from the Kings. Being that I absolutely love their alternate jersey from last year I would've like to see a grey jersey, but a certain new team that happens to be in the same division has apparently cornered the market for grey. Still a decent jersey. 6.5/10 Minnesota Wild - They finally decided which logo to use on their jerseys, and it's their original logo. From what I've seen, the away jersey will remain the same. Their new home jersey is equally as beautiful as their away. The wheat colour with that shade of green work really well and the chest stripe is a nice touch. The red stripe on the arms looked weird at first, but I guess they needed to put more red somewhere. 8/10 Montreal Canadiens - Again, we knew we wouldn't see a major departure from the traditional Habs jerseys. I'm not sure how I feel yet about the laces on that collar, but I'll give it a chance. Being a Canadiens fan, the only change I would like to see is if they got rid of the white border on their numbers on the away jerseys. I think reverting back to the blue numbers with a red border would freshen things up a bit and bring back memories of when the team was a Cup contender. They added part of the team motto to the inside of that collar, which is a exert of "In Flander's Field" in French. 7.5/10 Nashville Predators - I never thought I'd say a team should keep their piping, but Nashville should have kept the piping. This jersey is just way too plain for my liking. The space between the logo and the hem is way too big and having less blue is a downgrade. Although I will say that the back of the jersey looks fine. They kept the guitar strings on the numbers and the blue numbers help it look, well...less gold. 4.5/10 New Jersey Devils - Finally something new from the Devils. Coming from a franchise that a few seasons ago wouldn't even change their design for the Stadium Series game (they simply used the retro jersey in the Edge cut), it's a change that I think is overdue. It's a bit plain, but I'm a fan. The yoke no longer extends into the shoulder and the hem is now have added a green hanger effect commentating their 3 Stanley Cup wins. 7/10 New York Islanders - I am probably in the minority when I say I will miss the black "Brooklyn" jerseys, but since they won't be playing in Brooklyn it had to go. The blue trim around the logo on the away jerseys is a small detail that makes a big difference. Would've been nice to see the stripes that represent their Stanley Cup victories (even inside the collar would be fine), but it's a minor complaint. 6.5/10 New York Rangers - They put grey around the collar of their away jerseys why? It's a head scratcher for sure, but it's such a minor detail that I'll let it slide. "New York" in the font style of their alternate jerseys can be found inside the collar. It's still a great jersey, no matter how much useless grey is on the collar. 7.5/10 Ottawa Senators - If there was any team that needed a new look it was the Sens. Instead they squared off the white and black on the sleeves and side panels and got rid of the stylized numbers and letters. If they were going to keep the centurion logo, then keep the same font. They managed to take an outdated and ugly jersey, and make it worse. 2/10 Philadelphia Flyers - The retro look isn't a bad look, but the Flyers are capable of doing something new. Their last 2 alternates and their Stadium Series jerseys are proof of that. Ideally, they should ditch the vintage design and opt for something new. Keep the inverse coloured name bars if it's that important, but a change would be welcomed. 6/10 Pittsburgh Penguins - The defending Stanley Cup Champions will retain the same look and boy is it a good look. Those white jerseys are a thing of beauty. 8/10 San Jose Sharks - Not what I had hoped for but I am excited for the future. The alternate logos revealed (although not used) last year are finally here. The design is the same but with new shoulder patches it looks like we may see a logo change down the line which would be an upgrade. Teal jerseys will always score some extra points whether the jerseys are good or bad. 7/10 St. Louis Blues - I am of the opinion that St. Louis had one of the top 5 jerseys in the league last year. I think these prove that to be a fact rather than an opinion. The design is the same, but they have white numbers on their home jerseys and do they ever look great. The St. Louis city flag was placed inside the collar so extra credit for that detail. 8.5/10 Tampa Bay Lightning - They still look like the Leafs. Please add some black. 4/10 Toronto Maple Leafs - The Leafs just changed their jerseys last season so there was no changes made. It's a nice, clean looking jersey. 7.5/10 Vancouver Canucks - ...They did nothing. They kept the jerseys exactly the same. Huge missed opportunity here. The orca logo just doesn't work anymore. The script above the logo looks out of place. If you've had the same jersey since the last rebranding then why wouldn't you change something? It's not a classic design like Chicago, Detroit or Montreal. After a decade of people buying this exact jersey do they think people will shell out money for something they likely already have at a higher cost than before? That being said, I'm a fan of the striping and colours. 3/10 Vegas Golden Knights - Well we all expected it and we got it. A grey home jersey. This jersey looks great. They used the perfect amount of red, as I think they would be very plain without it. The textured design in the gold is a nice touch. The home jersey looks like a suit of armour which was definitely the goal. The white gloves are a bit weird, but this is a jersey review so I won't let that factor in here. I can't wait to see them hit the ice in these. 8/10 Washington Capitals - This is the only team I will not fault for leaving things unchanged. The logo still looks modern but the striping is a bit dated. It gets a pass because the look is still fairly popular. 6.5/10 Winnipeg Jets - I'm not going to say that it's time for something new from Winnipeg, but it's awfully close to being time for something new. I'm a fan of the current look and I expected it to stay pretty much the same. With that being said, I hope it doesn't stay the same for much longer. Now I don't think they should go old-school Jets (although they should wear the 2016 Heritage Classic as a throwback), but maybe start with an original design as an alternate a few years down the line and see where things go. For now, I'm fine with them sticking to the design they've had since relocating from Atlanta. 7/10

Do you agree? Disagree? Tell me in the comments and I'll pass it along to Corey!

Have you voted for COTW? I'm up for this week's so you totally should. I'm kidding of course, as we have 3 solid concepts that were the best of last week. Remember to vote by Friday as usual.

The HJC Open is in full swing with the round robin. 16 spots are available, pick your favourite 5 and by Friday, we'll see which artists move on to the round of 16 next week. Votes are due Friday at noon.

COTW June 16-22 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
HJC Open Round Robin vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)

On with today's concepts

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Dino W.)

+ Nice arm striping, goes well with the yoke colour wise
+ I'm not totally against the idea of using the Arizona 3rd jersey side panels on a more classic jersey, like Dino has chosen here, and with a couple changes it'd really work
+ Good execution

- The side panels need an outline to help with colour balancing. Having that outline will add white to the sides of the black jersey, and allow for you to make the side panels black on the white jersey and have it match the yoke
- Shoulder patches are an odd choice considering you've chosen the centurion head for the logo. The O logo looks decent, but because of the vintage white in the shield patch, it stands out
- Would have liked some red in the numbers

Rating: 6.75/10

Vancouver Canucks Concept (By: BurkusCircus)

+ I've seen this idea attempted a couple of times before with the side panel Vs, and it works well here as it doesn't conflict with the Vs in the arm
+ Excellent logo choices
+ One thing that really helps the jersey stand out against Vancouver's other jerseys is the big green yoke, I really like that
+ Small detail, but the 3 stripes on the back of the collar looks really good!

- The NOB is very blurry, and the 97 Player makes me thing you got it from Sportslogos.net, which is okay but you could always use the templates page to find all the fonts you need. If it's simply a resizing issue then that's different
- Would like to see the socks have a V in them

Rating: 7.5/10

Team Cambodia ASEAN Concepts (By: FC Macbeth)

+ The home (I think it's home anyways) jersey looks pretty good, with a couple execution changes I'd really like it
+ Logo chosen is pretty good as well
+ Execution wise this concept isn't bad

- The biggest issue with this concept is some of the design choices. Why is there a Legend of Zelda style tri-force on the helmets? Why does the away jersey have light blue, lavender and yellow on it? At first I thought the FIFA team did this and if was a call to them, but they have a red and black clash. If there's any significance to it it'd be nice to but as is, I have no idea why. The fun fact section would be the perfect place for that, instead of what Cambodia called itself 40 year ago.
- Execution wise, the Captain's C/A is too small, the NOB is too low on the jersey, and there are no TV numbers where that patch of colour is on the yoke bands
- The arched script might look better if the temple logo was smaller, but as is it looks blocky and stretched out

Rating: 5/10

Tampa Bay Lightning Concepts (By: Anthony C.)

+ Call me crazy, but I love this pattern with Tampa's logo> I think it's the big white arms with the white logo and even the use of piping as a break between the arm striping and the arm band
+ Good logo choices and colour balancing
+ Decent execution

- Big missed opportunity to add black back into the colour scheme on the pants, piping and numbers
- NOB is too close to the numbers and those numbers are too small
- No helmet logos
- This template does not work well with a tie down

Rating: 6.5/10

Toronto Maple Leafs Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ Love the idea of a negative space T with the Leaf, while we'd never see it on a jersey in reality, it'd look great on a T shirt
+ The font chose for the numbers looks really good with that modern leaf
+ Also good job making the Vegas shield logo shape work decently with the Leafs, never would have expected that
+ Good execution

- Big problem with the striping- too similar to Tampa Bay, especially with the extra grey added to it
- Shoulder patch is desperately needed, something similar to Vegas's shoulder patch with the CN tower or something would look amazing

Rating: 7/10

Philadelphia Flyers Concept (By: Anthony C.)

+ Solid colour layout on both jerseys
+ Most of the Flyers look is intact while basing them more so on their previous alternates another rival team's jerseys
+ I will say the white jersey is one of the better Flyers non-traditional look I've seen
+ Good execution

- Yeah, no beating around the bush, the Flyers should never wear something similar to the Pens, no matter how good the white jersey is, I know BPoe and Steven would never allow it
- Still no helmet logos
- If you want to make this jersey more for the Flyers, adding a Keystone patch would help massively

Rating: 7.25/10

Tampa Bay Lightning Concept (By: BurkCirk)

+ Previous shoulder patch looks great with grey as the main jersey colour
+ Decent striping pattern
+ Better than that are those awesome bolts on the arms
+ Decent execution

- The Stars/Blackhawks WC numbers need an outline if they are to work on grey
- Not sure why the shoulder patch was chosen as the primary logo when the usual primary logo would honestly look better

Rating: 7/10

Sherbrooke Phoenix QMJHL Concepts (By: St├ęphane S.)

+ Beautiful altered logo that makes it look much cleaner than the current logo
+ Excellent use of the Chicago 16 SS jersey template, with its own twist
+ Fantastic colour balancing
+ Perfect execution

- One small gripe is with the shading on the white jersey being slightly too dark, but that's way more a personal preference thing

Rating: 10/10 COTW Nom from me!

Sunday: A New (Jersey) Era Begins!

Afternoon everybody. Steve here. As some of you have already seen (unless you live in a place with no communication to the outside world) the NHL finally released the Adidas uniforms. I'm not going to give my piece on them here because I'll be stating that on the special edition HJC podcast.

Moving on, The HJC Open is underway and hopefully a lot of you guys took our advice to not do concepts at the last minute. Once again, bad idea to wait. Also, don't forget about COTW voting.

Onto the Concept!

COTW June 16-22 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
HJC Open Round Robin vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)

Anthony C- Mississauga Steelheads
Positives: Big improvement from the Steelheads current jersey. While it does look like you are taking a queue from the Leafs' Centennial jersey design, you do improve on the design by adding the touch of silver and the change of color at the bottom of the hem.
Negatives: Other than the fact that it's still based off of a Leafs' jersey design (albeit a specialty jersey) I feel that you could have gone farther with this design ot make it a little more distinctive.
Overall: 8.5/10

Anthony C- USA vs Canada Outdoor Game
Positives: I can tell you right away you've improved on what team USA will wear in Buffalo next year. It's nice to see that you kept the striping of the bills jersey but used it for both the sleeves and hem to give it a classic look with the arched "USA". As for Canada, this is really nice and clean with a good balance of red and white.
Negatives: The shoulder logos being on one side looks really strange. I could understand if it was for a specialty patch on the other side but IIHF always puts them on the chest. Also, that Canada jersey design reminds me a lot of what the USSR use to wear and I'm not sure that would go over well with the country as a whole.
Overall: 8/10

FC M- Hong Kong vs Macau
Positives: Out of the two jersey you've made here, I'd say that the Macau jersey turned out the best. From what I've seen, Macau wears the Canadiens' jersey template so this is a MAJOR improvement over what they have now. The phantom yoke striping works well with the numbers as well. As for the Hong Kong jersey, the arm striping is what the jersey has going for it.
Negatives: Compared to what Hong Kong wears now this is a downgrade. Why didn't you use the hibiscus on the front and make it more modern looking like Macau? All I'm saying is that it looks like you spent so much time on the one jersey that you neglected the other.
Overall: 6.75/10

Jordan R- Chonjin Steelers
Positives: So you decided to make a hockey league in one of the poorest countries on Earth? Well I give you credit for doing it. The logo is killer and the color choices you made on the jersey look great. How you did this concept gives me promise for the rest of them.
Negatives: I do have one issue with this though. The sleeve numbers on the dark jersey look slightly high.
Overall: 9/10

Jordan R- Hamhung Sharks
Positives: Once again, love the logo and color choices here Jordan. Also, the numbers tie really well together with the logo and you really pull off that two-tone numbering. Also, I like that you kept part of the sleeves dark on the white jersey to give them more contrast to the jersey.
Negatives: none.
Overall: 10/10 COTW NOMINEE!

Noah B- Minnesota Twins
Positives: I'll be honest, you've done a really good job with the city mashups Noah and this one adds to that. The use of gold with the "TC interlocking" logo on the front looks beautiful on the jerseys with the simple two color stripes.
Negatives: My only negative is the phantom yoke on the dark jersey. Phantom yokes can work in some case but it doesn't here.
Overall: 8.5/10

Noah B- Montreal Expos
Positives: God Bless the Expos. May their identity rest in peace and be brought back when the time is right. As for this mashup, I like that you went with the 70's era instead of trying to do the modern style. The baby blue really works on both jersey and I think you did a great job with it. The three stripes across the chest look beautiful as well.
Negatives: The white jersey seems really bare when you compare it to the dark jersey. The waist striping could be a little bit bigger as well.
Overall: 8.5/10

Steve G- Anaheim Ducks
Positives: Steve I'm going to start with the top concept because the only thing that's redeemful on that is the Mighty ducks logo and the green. As for the bottom set, Love the use of orange for the ends with the web D as the logo and the collar and no phantom yoke. Also, the striping from the early years of the edge jersey look great as well.
Negatives: The whole top two jerseys are negatives. I really don't need to say more. I will say that it was a good idea but just the reality of it is terrible.
Overall: 7.5/10

Ok Folks that's everything. Have a good rest of the week and be on the look out for out special podcast!

June 24, 2017

Saturday: More Podcast!

The winner of the COTW vote for June 9-15 is Noah B!

Full Results

Congrats to Noah, this is his first COTW win of 2017 and I think it may be his first ever. There are more of these city crossover concepts coming from Noah, so we'll have to see how many get nominated and if anymore can win.

The new COTW nominees have been listed on the side of the page. They are for the week of June 16-22. If you are logged into a Google account you can see the poll and place your vote before it closes at noon Eastern time on Friday.

Voting for the Round Robin of the HJC Open is also underway. The poll is on the side of the page, but to see all of the entries you can click the banner at the top of the page (or go to the 2017 HJC OPEN tab). This poll also closes at noon Eastern time on Friday. The 16 artists with the most votes will move into the Quarter Semi-Finals and participate in the bracket portion of the tournament.

This is a reminder that anyone that advances in the HJC Open will have to submit a NEW concept to the COMPETITION email by Tuesday, July 4 at noon Eastern time.

We've had time to digest the Adidas jerseys now. I will take this time to identify my biggest winner of the switch over and the biggest loser.

Biggest winner: Vegas Golden Knights
This is a great jersey. Perhaps Vegas had a mental advantage because they were dealing with the Adidas template from the start. There was never any history with the Reebok Edge jerseys or any other type of jersey cut. The Adidas cut is the only cut they have ever known. They also resisted going crazy and kept with the idea of making a hockey jersey, in the traditional sense. I'm glad there's not collar laces for the sake of collar laces and this jersey looks great with the Adidas collar, which can't be said for most teams.

Biggest Loser: Nashville Predators
Ottawa could also be here, but I said I would choose only one. When the Preds wore blue in the Edge cut, they had some of the worst jerseys in the NHL. When they made the switch to yellow you could take everything I said about the Golden Knights working with the Adidas cut and apply it to the Preds and the Reebok Edge cut. But now with the Adidas jersey they ave taken all of the life out of the jersey! I think they are going too crazy with the idea of owning the yellow. They already do own it and the entire league knows it, you didn't need to make your jersey more yellow.

There's also some good news and some bad news as it relates to these new jerseys and us jersey collectors.

The bad news first. Replicas will be made by Fanatics and will fit and look closer to a sweatshirt than a hockey jersey. The price of a blank jersey will set you back about $150, and to have that replica numbered the total rises to $200.

Now the good news, Adidas will be making the authentics or PRO level? Either way these will be identical to what the players wear on the ice. The good news is that the price is not comparable to the "authentics" Reebok was giving us. $200 will be the cost of an Adidas authentic and add another $50 to get a name and number on there. Looks like I'm becoming an authentics collector!

So how could we possibly not do another HJC Podcast after all of these jerseys came out? Tomorrow night myself and some of the writers will get together again and record our thoughts on the NHL Adidas Adizero jerseys. And this time I hope to have a cleaner recording. So look for that to be posted sometime on Monday.

Now on the TEMPLATES page you can find two new Adidas templates. You have seen them posted during the week and I believe we now have the final versions.

Click & save
This one is likely to be the most popular and it is based on Steven G's template. I added some stitching and worked on the collars and then Matt M. made some adjustments for accuracy. So enjoy!

Click & save
This one is the template that I like as it best represents how an Adidas jersey would look like if you laid it out on the ground. The following template was done by me.

Click & save
Adam L. sent in this version of the template where the stitching has been altered and Adam has added the different collars.

Please enjoy these.

Friday: The Dawning of the Age of Adidas

By now you've all seen the Adidas reveals, and while there are some fantastic updates, there are some huge letdowns as well.  I'm not going to go into detail here because we have a special treat for y'all coming up where we will further discuss the new designs, but I will say that for their first attempt at a uniform, Vegas really killed it.  The floral detailing in the arm striping and logo are the touches that really clinch it for me.  While I may not approve of some of their roster choices, I can approve of their aesthetics.

For those of you that don't follow me on twitter (which is most of y'all, I still have yet to reach the coveted dozen followers mark), I shared a preview of the Fanatics version of the Preds' new uniforms which I will now post here.
Looks just like what the Preds will be wearing on ice next year.

In other uniform news, the Sharks released their promo schedule and on Saturday, October 14, they will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Night by giving away special Los Tiburones jerseys to everyone in attendance.  Personally, I like these jerseys for the same reason I love the Ducks' old Wild Wing jersey.  They're so ridiculously over the top that I can't help but enjoy them.

Look later today for the COTW vote for June 16-22 as well as the vote for the first round of the HJC Open.  Entries for the Open were due at noon today, so if you didn't get your first concept in on time be sure to vote so you can be a part of the action.

Now on to today's concepts!

Anthony C.- Anaheim Ducks

Our first concept of the day is a Ducks design that comes to us from Anthony C.  I really like the merging of the old striping pattern with the new color scheme.  I also love the use of the original logo, I've never really been a fan of the webbed D.  I don't know why, but the colors work way better with this striping pattern.  It's probably because the striping isn't nearly as busy as it is on the current set.  I also love that this set eliminates the phantom yoke that Anaheim currently uses, it's just a design choice that does not work.  I think that the numbers on the away jersey should be black in order to help the color balance, as black is much more prevalent on the home set.  I also wish that you'd gone with breezers that were more similar to the ones they wore in eggplant and jade.  Additionally, shoulder patches would really help this one out, it's a little too blank up top.  As for execution, socks would have been nice to see and you're missing helmet logos.  Final verdict: a good combination of both eras of the Ducks' identity.  7.5/10

Anthony C.- Team Canada

This is just Canada's 2002 uniform with a different font and slightly altered shoulder patches.  While I do like the addition of the yokes to help the color balance, it's not enough of a break from the original set.  I also would have inverted the colors on the patch for the light jersey.  Same execution errors as above.  Final verdict: A decent design, but not that inspired.  5.5/10

Burkus Circus-  New York Islanders

Our next concept is a design for an Islanders third jersey from Burkus Circus.  I like the idea of an orange third for the Isles, it's way better than the black they've become so enamored with.  I like the idea of the four stripe pattern, a nod to the logo and their four Stanley Cup wins.  I actually recently submitted a similar concept myself.  I really like the yoke striping, the two stripes on each side was a good choice.  I also like the three stripes on the back of the neck, a very clever way to subtly incorporate Adidas branding.  I don't know how I feel about the choice of navy, as the Isles have once again moved away from it in recent years.  I'm also not a fan of the isolated NY logo, and I hate that style of collar.  While I appreciate the stripes in the numbers, similar to Nashville, I would have gone with a more squared off font to match the font in the logo.  As for execution, equipment and breezers would have been nice to see,and the name on the back is very pixelated.  Final verdict: not a bad concept, but some execution errors hold it back.  7/10

Burkus Circus- New York Rangers

Burkus Circus' second design of the day is for another New York third, this time for the Rangers.  I am intrigued by the idea of a red Rangers jersey, as they have never worn one.  I also like the idea of a chest stripe, and I think it could really work with the Lady Liberty logo.  I think the use of navy here is a good choice, as it keeps it from looking too much like a Habs jersey.  I don't think red numbers were the way to go here, they blend in a little too much.  The cuffs are superfluous, as they would be covered by the gloves, and I would probably ditch the matching hem stripe as well.  Most importantly, ditch those shoulder patches.  As a Rangers fan, I absolutely despise that logo and wish that all records of its existence would be scrubbed from this earth.  Same execution errors as above.  Final verdict:  an interesting idea for a Rangers third, but some design choices detract from it.  7/10

Denny J.- Atlanta Thrashers

Next up is Denny J. with a design for the now defunct Atlanta Thrashers.  Ahh, memories... As a hockey fan and resident of Atlanta, the Thrashers hold a special place in my heart.  This set draws more from the original Thrashers uniforms, as opposed to the polarizing baby blues that they wore towards the end of their existence.  This design completely eliminates the baby blue from the color scheme, simplifying the colorways.  It also abandons the "winged" full length yoke in favor of a more traditional striping pattern  The most frustrating part about this concept is the fact that the striping is different across all of the jerseys.  I also think that given the logos, the hem strip should slant down instead of up so that it's not crowding the crests.  While the elimination of the baby blue works in the primary set, the logo used as the main crest on the third just does not look good without it.  Finally, I'm not a big fan of your glove designs.  Final verdict: I may be a little biased, but this one just doesn't do it for me.  7/10

FC Macbeth- Columbus Blue Jackets

Our next entry is a Columbus Blue Jackets concept from FC Macbeth.  Let's start with the positives: I'm really digging those new logos, and kudos for crediting the original artist.  The attention to detail on your original logo for the third, including the 17 stars from the flag, is fantastic.  I also like the striping pattern inspired by civil war patches, but I do think it should extend completely around the arm.  Now for the negatives:  I'm completely baffled by your color choices for your original logo and the alternates.  If there is some reasoning behind it, please clue me in.  The addition of red and vintage white make no sense with the absence of them on the logos, and the vintage white yoke on the white jersey is a terrible choice.  I didn't like the text in the hem striping when the Kings did it, and I like it even less here with the angled striping.  If Vegas taught us one thing on Tuesday, it's that white gloves don't work.  Now for that alternate... I've already addressed the color issues, so I'll move past that.  I do like the logo you made, but I probably would have extended the red and white to make a chest stripe, I think that would really work well.  The "buttons" on it just look weird, and without context would only further confuse spectators.  The text in the sock striping is odd and ultimately pointless, as you'd never really be able to read it.  As for execution, names on the back are way too big (especially on the alternate), and I don't know if you can claim credit for a naval star logo.  It's a fairly common design.  Final verdict: once again, I'm really confused by a lot of your design choices.  4/10

Jets96- Pittsburgh Penguins

Next up is our very own Jets96 with a design for the Penguins that combines elements from uniforms worn in 1974 and 1994.  I like the idea of combining the color schemes of the two eras, and Jets96 does a nice job of balancing them between the two jerseys.  The simplistic striping pattern from the RoboPenguin era is a good fit for this set, and I think using the hem stripe that draws from the '74 uniform is an improvement.  I'm not too sure about the use of the Pens' Edge breezers, it's a little too modern for such a classic look, and I would have liked to have seen some blue in them.  I'm also not sold on those collars and I'm not a fan of the gloves.  I think you could have done a better job of incorporating blue into them.  Final verdict: a good looking set, but the mismatch of breezers and jerseys takes a little away from it.  8/10

Lucas D.- Buffalo Sabres

Our final entry of the day is a Buffalo Sabres concept from Lucas D.  Given the old school feel of this one, I can only assume that it's an idea for the upcoming Winter Classic game against my beloved Rangers.  I gotta say, if I saw the Sabres take the ice in these, I'd be hard pressed not to root for them.  The classic striping, the chest stripe, the return to royal blue; all of it works for me.  The only things I can think that might possibly make it better are the quilted numbering from the old third jerseys and maybe a double stripe on the breezers, just to keep the striping consistent.  Final verdict: a fantastic WC design for the Sabres that I would love to see take the ice.  9.5/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!

That's all for me this week!  See y'all next Friday!

Thursday: Viva Las Vegas

Hello everyone, welcome back again!

I was going to talk about the new Adidas jerseys today, but I'll save that for something that may be coming pretty soon. I'll give my full reviews on next week's post, but for now I'll say that my reaction to the Adidas jerseys are that they're either a hit or miss, and there really aren't any in between (at least not the new designs).

Along with that, the Awards and expansion draft were last night, and as a Pens fan I can say I think I held it together there at the end.

Huh? Did you ask if I'm crying? Uh..no..my eyes are just sweating.

All in all I think Vegas got a decent team, nothing too special aside from a few gems including James Neal and Fleury, but if they play their cards right and develop some of their many upcoming draft picks well, they might be a pretty decent team in a few years. I guess we'll wait and find out.

It may not be a big week when it comes to voting as we only have COTW to vote for, but it is a big week for us concept creators, as the HJC Open will be closed at noon tomorrow, so if you're planning on entering, get those entries in!

COTW June 9-15 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
HJC Open Round Robin entries (due Friday @ noon ET)

Anthony C. - French River Rapids
+Traditional striping is normally a good path to take.
+Good color balance.
+I like the font.
-The back of the jersey inside the collar on the red jersey should be blue, not white.
-The Rapids have a very interesting white jersey currently (at least I think it's the current one),  so taking that unique design away doesn't work too well.
-On a similar note, it's not very creative to just use a Blackhawks road/Oiler type of template and recolor it. Anyone with basic skills in an image editing program can do that. Be more creative.
Overall: 4/10

Anthony C. - Ottawa 67's
+This design is simple yet effective. I like the way the white striping pops out.
+The logo is also a simple and effective way to go about this.
-The 67's does end up pretty small, though.
-The TV numbers especially blend in a bit too much. The back numbers also suffer, but not as bad.
-Flip the colors on the pants striping to match the jersey.
-Again, this design isn't too creative or out of the box, so it's hard to give you too much credit. Based on some of your other concepts I know you can do better than these basic template-y concepts.
Overall: 5/10

Brian B. - Vegas Golden Knights
+Am I reviewing a concept, or the Knights actual jerseys? I know you had the draft hat to work off of, but these are pretty spot on.
-The only things you got wrong were the extra black stripe on the white jersey, the hem striping, and the font (I think, though it would be hard to get that right without access to it). This isn't even a bad thing about your concept, it's just inaccurate to the actual design.
-I'm not a fan of the red collar insert here. I like adding more red to the jersey, but I think it just stands out in the wrong way.
+I like Vegas' actual gold number trim better, but I think red number trim works just fine as well.
Overall: 8/10

Burkus Circus - Minnesota Wild
+I really like the look of this one right off the bat. I'm not sure the significance of the number and type of stripes, but it looks good.
-I would either add one more stripe to the hem and socks, or remove one from the arms. No reason not to keep it consistent if you ask me.
+That shoulder yoke works really well to balance the colors and make sure there isn't too much red.
-The back numbers look just a tad too big to me, but considering how small the difference would be it could easily just be me.
+I wonder what this design would look like in green, with wheat as the secondary color, and red making up the smaller stripes. That might look really good.
Overall: 8/10

Burkus Circus - Nashville Predators
-This one, on the other hand, doesn't jump out at me the same way the other one does.
+I do think the Preds would look good in a navy blue alternate jersey.
+I think the striping pattern you chose could work..
-But on this concept it looks a bit busy. It could possibly be because the striping goes up so high on the arms, which also cramps the TV numbers.
-I'm personally not a fan at all of italicized fonts on hockey jerseys, so I'm not too keen on this choice.
-I think the design would look much better if you replaced the light blue with yellow.
-Out of any predators logo you could choose to use, why that one? The current pred head is the only decent one, the rest are much too complex and busy.
Overall: 6.5/10

Jets96 - Vancouver Canucks
+If you ask me, you don't really need to "try to make the orca logo work" because I think it's just fine. It's not my favorite, that would be the modern stick-in-rink, but I think it works just fine.
+One thing I don't like about it currently, though, is the arched "VANCOUVER" over it, so I'm glad you removed it.
+I do think the green outline you put on the logo looks pretty good.
+I'm a big fan of the second shade of blue added to the jersey striping.
+The colors are balanced really well. Unlike St.Louis, you don't have too much navy on the road jersey.
-As I mentioned before I like the stick-in-rink, so I would prefer that as the shoulder patch, but Johnny V definitely isn't a bad choice either.
-I'm not a big fan of that font. I know it's the Canucks' font, but I would change it up.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW Nomination

Wyatt Z. - Detroit Red Wings
+Touching one of the untouchable original 6 teams is hard to do, so I give you props for doing so here.
+I like the idea of going with a Cougars inspired look.
-I would make the stripes thicker, though, and also drop the gray/silver stripe. That one only makes sense to me for the Centennial Classic, and even then I think it would have been better in just red.
-The white gloves are really not a good move. Just look at the Vegas jersey display from the other night. Thank god they aren't using that.
+The road seems like a fauxback inspired by the Cougars' or Falcons' chest stripe design, and I think this is a good idea in theory.
-I don't think it works too well for the team's primary jersey though.
-Again, I'd lose the silver stripe and just keep it consistent.
-Those back numbers are way too hard to see.
-White pants are also a no-go.
-Not a fan of the logo on the cuffs.
-From a logical standpoint, the goalie wouldn't have a different set of pads for home and away. That would just be extra money to spend and extra gear to break in.
Overall: 6/10

And that's all for today! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week.

Wednesday: The Future is Formed

*** Edit by Ryan ***
Yesterday I gave you an Adidas template and now, by request, here is another! This one is based off of Steven G's hybrid template. I think a lot of you will like this and find it easy to use. As for collars with laces for both templates, you'll have to wait or make them yourself.

It's the blog post everybody has been waiting for: The day after the big reveal.

NEWS: So let's get straight to it with the reveals in geographical alphabetical order.

Anaheim: No major changes

Arizona: No major changes besides ownership giving a big f*** you to Shane Doan

Boston: Font changes so that there's no more black separating the white outline from the yellow characters. Also the HISTORIC yellow socks are thrown away in favor of black ones that match the striping.

Buffalo: Dumb piping is gone, dumb numbers on the front remain

Calgary: Dumb piping is gone, dumb side panels remain. Font no longer italicized.

Carolina: Arguably the biggest winner here from the Adidas rebrand. There's now more black on the jerseys, the Warning Flags are back by being beautifully sublimated into the red hem stripe. I can't wait until their away is unveiled

Chicago: No major changes

Colorado: The other big winner. The mountain striping is back though sans black trim. Font changes slightly.

Columbus: Font changes slightly

Dallas: No major changes

Detroit: No major changes

Edmonton: A more perfect orange inverse of the Oilers previous set, with numbers on the sleeves. Navy overtakes the royal blue.

Florida: No major changes

Los Angeles: No major changes

Minnesota: A new green jersey that draws upon the previous alternate. Red now separates the cream striping, the primary logo replaces the wordmark logo, the M from the wordmark logo becomes a shoulder patch, and a cream chest stripe lays on the front of the jersey behind the logo, but ONLY on the front, a la Florida.

Montreal: No major changes

Nashville: One of the bigger disappointments. Nashville loses the upper blue stripe on all aspects of the jersey, as well as the blue arch pattern near the yokes and the white piping that surrounded it and continued down the jersey.

New Jersey: The other big disappointment as their hem stripe is replaced by black hem trim. The white on the arm striping also thickens.

New York (I): White jersey now has a blue logo outline instead of the white outline that blended into the jersey.

New York (R): Added silver on the collar of the white jersey

Ottawa: Reebok Edge pattern squared off and transferred onto the new Adidas template.

Philadelphia: Shoulder/arm pattern slightly more rigid as it goes down the arms

Pittsburgh: No major changes

San Jose: Los Tiburones logo on the shoulder now of the teal jersey, with the SJ Tiburones logo on the shoulder of the white.

St. Louis: White and gold swapped on the numbers, now white numbers with gold and blue trim.

Tampa Bay: No major changes

Toronto: No major changes

Vancouver: No major changes

Vegas: Grey jerseys, upper arm black followed by gold and a small red stripe before going back to grey. Hem will be black with a thin gold stripe above it. White jersey replaces the black with grey. black collars on both. FALSE ALARM: No white gloves, they will be gold. Helmets grey.

Washington: No major changes

Winnipeg: No major changes

Overall a subpar reveal, though a few standouts that make me happy, and a lot of stuff unchanged as it goes to the new template, which after we saw from the Reebok Edge switch, it's probably for the best.

One thing I want to point out is that as bad as we thought the collars would be, the laces are even worse. They look forced and not classic the way that they should on a jersey like the Leafs, Habs, Bruins or Rangers, or even the new Hurricanes jersey.

COMPETITIONS: The HJC Open is open for business. Send in your concepts, but make sure you're ready for the next rounds just in case.

VOTES: Concept of the week only this week.

COTW June 9-15 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
HJC Open Round Robin entries (due Friday @ noon ET)

Anthony C: Tulsa Jr. Oilers (WSHL) Concept

One could argue that the Jr Oilers have a better logo than the professional side in Tulsa, and Anthony tries to make sure they have better jerseys than their professional counterparts too. Clearly based on the Edmonton Oilers design for the main set, we have an orange and navy scheme here, with the orange dominant on both the home and away, meanwhile the alternate gets a more classic treatment, eliminating the white outside of the logos and font. Great stuff. Maybe get the pants to better match the striping?

Rating: 95%

Anthony C: Utah Outliers (WSHL) Concept

After looking this team up, Their current jersey is the grey jersey presented here, but with the black and grey swapped, plus a matching hem stripe instead of the solid neon yellow hem they currently employ. A decent switch, combined with a much needed logo outline on the grey jersey. No design idea issues, but execution kills this, as the sock stripes look to be floating around the sock instead of part of it.

Rating: 79%

Burkus Circus: Florida Panthers Concept

I have never been a fan of how Florida employs the gold in their jerseys, creating an awkward blend between the white and red from afar. Personally I'll have to take a hard pass at this because it looks like their original jerseys merged with the Edge system and their new logos. Name and number on the back need a bit of breathing room from the yoke and from each other. Also slightly awkward due to the size of the numbers

Rating: 60%

Burkus Circus: Los Angeles Kings Concept

With this concept, you take a decent step in the right direction. A grey alternate looks good with LA, and this has a bit of a retro feel everywhere except for one place: The logos on the yoke. If you were able to find a way to better modernize the logo, such as using the current fonts LA employs in their branding scheme, then I'd be happier with this concept. Name and number on the back look pixelated so I recommend downloading this set of NHL team fonts put together by Ryan on the templates page.

Cody R: Norfolk Admirals (ECHL) Concept

It was only a matter of time before we started seeing concepts from the relegated Admirals. Now that they are completely unaffiliated from Edmonton, the Ads have a new logo (though the two are not necessarily related) without the mess of colors they previously had. Simply navy blue and gold. Clean, professional looking set that for the most part avoids YOWS (yellow-on-white syndrome), with the exception being the numbers on the white jersey and the anchor logo. Pure class. Again, maybe have the pant stripe match the main set?

Rating: 95%

Lucas D: Quebec Nordiques Concept

As is done many times on this blog, teams from the dead get new life from the artists that contribute here, such as Lucas with this Nordiques concept. With such a classic logo, it's hard not to. A more uniform look here as opposed to the original set, combined with clever use of the new Adidas collar, presents arguably the best look I have seen created for the Nords. I wonder how the logo would look on the blue jersey if left unchanged from the actual primary logo. Regardless, it looks great as is. Just more of a "what if".

Rating: 97%

Snow Monster: Colorado Avalanche Concept

An Avalanche concept from a guy called snow monster and no yeti logos? Jokes aside, this is a decent idea that needs a lot of clean up work before it can go places. Firstly, the shoulder logos need to be cut off at the template lines. Secondly, there's so much unnecessary shadow effect surrounding all the colored areas that it ruins the striping pattern and the effect the pattern itself creates on the jersey. Finally, the TV numbers are pixelated. Despite only three major issues, it shows you how extensive these issues are before it can be viewed as a clean concept worthy of COTW.

Rating: 59%

TC Moore: New York Islanders Concept

A Rangers fan creating an Islanders concept, oh joy. Anyway, this concept has a couple of things that I want to point out. First, there's the common theme of four major stripes to commemorate the four straight cups that many Islander fans like to employ. I've kind of grown sick of it personally, because of how overplayed it is for two reasons: one, it's already commemorated in the logo, and two, what would happen if the Islanders did something like that and then won the cup the following year? The next thing I want to point out is the alternate logo, featuring a semicircle with the letters NY overlapping, though separate, next to the Statue of Liberty with the New York City skyline in the forefront. The irony is too much for me considering the Rangers Lady Liberty logo. The final thing I want to point out is the color balance problem. There's clash for dominance between the secondary and tertiary colors on each of the jerseys, as the white fights the orange on the blue jersey, the orange fights the blue on the white jersey, and the white fights the blue on the orange jersey (did I confuse anyone yet?).

Rating: 75%

The WINNER of my concept of the week nomination is:

I have two ideas but I can't decide so send help

So with the NHL jerseys unveiled, what do you think about them? Which ones are you interested in buying just as a collector, not even as a fan? Who's going to Vegas tonight in the expansion draft? WHY HAVEN'T YOU HELPED ME DECIDE WHO GETS NOMINATED FOR CONCEPT OF THE WEEK TODAY?

Hopefully next week I can relax a bit now that the news has basically been churned out all at once and maybe I'll be less indecisive. See you then!
