Wednesday: BREAKING NEWS

One more bit of EXCLUSIVE jersey news, it looks like once Adidas takes over the jersey manufacturing, sources of mine say that the NHL may lift the 1 alternate rule and expand it to two alternates. Does that mean that with the Brooklyn-themed Islanders jersey that we could see orange again? Maybe a modern fisherman?

ATTENTION CANUCKS FANS (and jersey collectors)! Check out this tweet. The red gradient Flying Skate jerseys are back and for sale in the team store, but only 100 are being made. Act quickly!

Keep an eye out, because the outdoor games are coming soon, and we have the jerseys for every game confirmed except for one. Philadelphia has not unveiled their Stadium Series jersey yet, but I would not be surprised that they used the 50th anniversary alternates they currently have.

VOTES ABOUND THIS WEEK! The Season moves to week 3. Only 5 teams are left undefeated with three games to go. Washington has a new owner and a nice road concept going up against 1st place and undefeated Ottawa (beats NY on vote differential). Crowsnest Past, Colorado, Amur and New York fill out the rest of the list of undefeated teams. How many will remain undefeated? YOU DECIDE! Don't forget about COTW as usual

NEW COMPETITION! Design the HJC Concept of the Year logo. You have a week and a half to do that. No restrictions except for file format and size (no less than 600x600). The logo will be featured on a plaque won by the Concept of the Year winner.

ON TO THE CONCEPTS!

Avi S: Dallas Stars Alternate Concept

A favorite design here at HJC is the off-colored upper arm, and Avi uses it here, but adds a point to the striping, as if the top-most point of a star, which is a nice touch for this team. Matching striping on the hem, though flatter than the arm. We finally have number outlines on a Stars jersey. Props for using that much-underutilized Texas logo. Not a fan of the sock pattern as it's not consistent with the rest of the jersey. The Color Way uniform is a step back, as this looks better with black equipment. Execution note: On the inside of the jersey, there should be black above the white hem trim, and not green.

Rating: 79%

Avi S: San Jose Sharks Alternate Concept

Similar points as last time. Black equipment is better, especially since it compliments the hem striping better to be consistent with the socks and arms. , inside of the jersey needs to have the striping and not straight teal. Love the new logo, and love the old fin logo modified to better fit here. However this jersey brings up the old debate of "Orange vs. Silver". I prefer orange, but you make the silver work here.

Rating: 79%

Bradley D: Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) Concept

Double blue is so nice, so when the Admirals switched to this I was so happy. Bradley tries a side panel only striping pattern. It's not bad. It looks too inconsistent with the rest of the jersey though. Alternate is nice though the yoke looks like it is incomplete, don't know the scope of Bradley's intention on that. I feel this could use some polishing, and maybe a bit more than that.

Rating: 77%

Taylor R: Merrimack College Warriors (NCAA) Concept

Taylor continues his tour throughout the Hockey East Conference. Currently Merrimack uses Canadiens home jerseys, but primarily yellow with blue and white trim. They also have a set similar to Taylor's blue jersey, but without the white and with a script logo. Maybe the white was a bad choice for that, because based on how thin those white stripes are, they get lost against the yellow, same with the yellow outline. Not quite there yet.

Rating: 80%

Taylor R: Providence College Friars (NCAA) Concept

One of the things I've loved about Providence College is their logo being unique to their hockey team and separate from their regular athletic programs like basketball. One of my favorite hockey logos too. I'm a sucker for white shoulder yokes on colored jerseys. The double outline on the numbers is great. The arched nameplate with no outline, balanced yokes and arms. A modern classic. Maybe throw some black onto the collar of the black jersey.

Rating: 94%

 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE FRIARS CONCEPT

Enjoy December tomorrow. I'll be back on the 7th, the Day that lives in infamy. I will post a quick tribute to those who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor, and maybe we can get a few Team USA concepts. Send them in and maybe Ryan can package them into my day (nudge, nudge, Ryan...). See you next week!

Tuesday: Vegas Illegal Knights???

Welcome to this Tuesday's post! We've got quite a few concepts for today! You guys have listened and have been sending lots of concepts. Keep up the good work!

As for any jersey news, I haven't seen anything other than the fact that the Golden Knights might be in some legal trouble with their name. Yep. Bill Foley couldn't get the West Point team name of Black Knights, so he took the Army's parachute division's name. They're the U.S. Army Parachute Team. So yeah...

The article said that the officials were looking into the name, but they haven't been able to constitute any legal action against the name yet. Foley also knew about the name, cause he wanted the Golden Knights team to drop in with the announcement, but it never happened.

Yeah, Foley could be in trouble. If he keeps the logo, he could go with Desert Knights, but otherwise he'd have to change it, and that means Golden Knights merchandise might be a rare collector's item pretty soon!

In other news, we have the Logo comp. for HJC's Concept of the Year contest! We also have the voting for the regularly scheduled COTW and The Season to vote for! So don't forget to Vote!!!

On to the Concepts!

Bradley D.- Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL)
Bradley here redesigns the Flyers AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms!
Good-
  • The Phantoms have a fantastic color scheme of Orange, Purple, and White, but the Purple is barely noticeable on their sweaters. Good job of adding more purple
  • I like how the sweaters are close to Philly's but don't match exactly
  • The shoulder yoke wide enough to fit the TV numbers is also really good!
Bad-
  • The hem stripe definitely needs more. The lone black stripe is a little plain
  • The socks also need more color. Orange on the white socks, and white on the orange socks
  • While the TV numbers fitting inside the yoke is good, the TV numbers are way too small
  • #OB are also a little too big as well
  • Needs AHL patches on back
My rating: A nice update for an AHL team that needs some more unity!

Bradley D.- Lehigh Valley Phantoms Alt. (AHL) 7.5/10

Bradley finishes his concept for the Phantoms with an all black alt!
Good-
  • Black is a great choice for an alternate sweater!
  • I really like the Orange collar
  • The numbers being double-outlined looks great and really matches with the striping pattern
Bad-
  • The striping looks pixelated, and is way too thin...
  • The logo has an extra white outline around it that should not be there. It's the edge of the black outline on the logo, and it's just loose pixels from resizing it.
  • Most of the jersey is devoid of white. The white nameplate and numbers stand out like a sore thumb... Maybe try orange numbers instead??
  • Needs AHL patches on back
My rating: Not as good as the home and away; Still needs some work... 6/10

Matt B.- Team North America U-23 (WCofH)
Matt here brings us his hand-drawn version of Team NA!
Good-

  • While I love the Orange and Black color scheme of Team NA in the tournament, Red, White, and Blue (Or Bleu, Blanc, at Rouge for our French Canadian followers!) looks good too!
  • I like the number font!
  • The lone star on the American flag looks much better that 50 stars would
  • The properly executed striping pattern WOULD look good
Bad-
  • Hand-drawn concepts can look good, if you are patient and slow down when you make them. Your stripes aren't the same size, and most of them don't follow a straight line. This can be easily fixed with a ruler or something else as a straight-edge.
  • It also looked like you used crayons to draw the stripes and colors. So you break outside of the lines quite often. Using a colored pencil (That you keep sharp) or a marker will give you more consistent coloring inside the template.
  • The logo choice is also not the best. The two flags together with an odd shape connecting them is a very weak logo.
My rating: This concept has potential. Like a lot. But unfortunately you've made a few execution errors. If you clean everything up, this concept would sky rocket! For now though, it's a 6/10. Don't worry! You're very talented, and you're only going to get better!!!

Kevin B.- Chicago Cubs (MLB to hockey)

Kevin creates a jersey that puts the Chicago Cubs as a hockey team!
Good-

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Pinstripes!!!
  • The colored sleeves make the jersey body look like a vest which looks great!
  • Good logo choice!
  • I like the sleeve cuffs at the end with the small amount of red and white
  • NOB and #OB look great, especially with the boxes around them. It makes it look like a vintage sweater
Bad-
  • The Cubs logo should not be surrounded by a template box however. First of all it's a round logo, and second, logos don't need a template box to be placed on. They would normally just be sewn on.
  • A few execution errors, You didn't include pinstripes in the fight strap box, you left the box around the Reebok workmark on the jersey, and you forgot some red on the left sleeve cuff on the front side.
My rating: A fantastic crossover! 9/10!

Taylor R.- UMass Minutemen (NCAA; Hockey East)

Taylor continues his NCAA redesign with a concept for UMass!
Good-
  • Striping pattern is great!
  • I love the arched nameplate!
  • The number font works perfectly with the logo
  • I also really like the Shoulder yokes
  • I was going to comment about how the equipment doesn't match the shade of maroon on the rest of the concepts, but after looking at some photos of the team, they have the same problem. Good job paying attention to details!
  • That Maroon jersey is a thing of beauty!
Bad-
  • The colored upper sleeves with the shoulder yoke doesn't work the best on the white sweater. Still looks great though!
My rating: A very solid concept, one of the best I've ever seen. It perfectly matches the feel of college hockey! 10/10 AND MY COTW NOMINEE!!!

Taylor R.- UMass-Lowell River Hawks (NCAA; Hockey East)
Taylor continues his NCAA redesign with UMass-Lowell!
Good-

  • I like the use of Anaheim-esque jerseys
  • The number font is fantastic!
  • Love the arched nameplate again!
Bad-
  • I don't like how the white sweater doesn't have the gap in the striping between the red and the blue. It makes it feel incomplete.
  • The blue sweater's collar could use some red
  • I wouldn't have gone with a tapered stripe for the pants
My rating: A good update that really simplifies a normally busy look. 8.5/10

Avi S.- Nashville Predators Color Rush/Alt. (NHL)

Avi continues his color rush series with the Preds!
Good-
  • I like the blue!
  • The guitar stripes on the stripes looks good!
  • I love the white numbers, they remind me of the Preds original jerseys
Bad-
  • Not much here, but this one just isn't as exciting as your other color rush sweaters
My rating: Still a solid alt. and color rush jersey for the preds! 8/10

Avi S.- Montreal Canadiens Color Rush/Alt. (NHL)
Avi's second concept of the day is for the Habs's color rush!
Good-

  • I love the reverse jersey
  • The double outline in the numbers looks great!
Bad-
  • The collar could use some more color
  • The whole concept could use some more red as a whole. The habs are a red dominant team after all...
My rating: Still a fantastic concept Avi! I've always enjoyed your work! 8/10

Well that's all for today! Don't forget to vote!!!

Monday: Cannonball Run

Welcome to another Monday post here on HJC!

As I'm sure by now you're sick of the reviews of the Vegas Golden Knights logos, I'll keep this short I like them but I don't love them. One thing worth mentioning is the use of red with a shade of gold and black has been done a couple times by the Bruins on their anniversary logos in 1999 & 2004, While I can't say I'd want the Bruins to do this, I am glad a team is doing this not named the WBS Penguins. That being said it is a very early 2000s design choice, something that former HJC writer Caz W. brought up after the unveiling. The primary itself is nice, the hidden V and the simplicity make it appealing, but the lack of red hurts it. We already have descriptions of the jerseys, so now we wait until those are unveiled and the roster is made in June and we'll have the Golden Knights we'll know and love in NHL 18.

The Penguins stadium series jerseys are a 9/10 from me, but it got me thinking about what the Flyers are going to wear. Philly doesn't have the steel town look to play off of but I'm thinking we might get some industrial looking jerseys from a  team that traditionally goes very traditional hockey or curvy. This will be the last major team jersey unveiling until the Leafs give us the St. Pats jersey in March, and perhaps more throwbacks (cough cough, Arenas jersey). We're also coming up on ASG jerseys, which I predict will be silver, black and white with some sort of unique aspect to it either in the striping, logo or numbers like the past couple of seasons. Last year's jerseys were saved by not only a great set of games, but also the font used....yes...the font saved those jersey from being the worst.

We did get an unveiling in the AHL, where Bakersfield has shown the world what Edmonton could have done with the Heritage Classic to give the fans a new jersey. Of course they are just slapping their logo on the original Alberta Oilers white jerseys and making them vintage white/creme.

Photo from Bakersfield Condor Official Twitter @Condors
I really like this jersey, I was looking forward to seeing it at the HC but this is the next best thing. The only issue I have is the collar. The originals had thicker blue outlines and that would add some much needed colour. The creme works in the logo's favour, as condors neck brace looking things are more creme coloured in real life. The only other nick pick comes with he numbers not being in the yoke, but I get they had to make room for the parent club logo and event logo, which otherwise would be crowding the front of the jerseys.

Rating: 8.25/10

The 2016 Concept of the Year logo contest is officially opened! The logo selected will be used on the official HJC COTY 2016 plaque and given to the winner, joining the previous 5 other winners. Entries are due on December 9th, giving you plenty of time to work on your entry. Look forward to seeing what you produce!

Don't forget to vote for week 3 of the Season! Things are tightening up as we work through Week 3 and are getting into the home stretch. Go back to Saturday's post to vote in the poll at the bottom of the page!

COTW has reset, don't forget to vote for that, it's conveniently on the side of the page, might as well do that now rather than procrastinating!

On to today's 8 concepts!

--------------------------------------------------------

Lake Erie Monsters of Cleveland Concepts (By: Bradley D.)

+ If memory serves correctly the Monsters used that M logo as a primary logo in the early edge days, and yeah I think it makes for a better primary that the current primary with this colour scheme
+ Colours are pretty well balanced on the away jersey
+ Good execution

- White jersey and socks need more blue on it
- Gloves are much too dark
- While I like the font chosen on the back, it doesn't really go well together with the angled logo

Rating: 7/10

Lake Erie Monsters of Cleveland Concept (By: Bradley D.)

+ Despite the CLE logo being used as a parent club logo, it looks pretty good outside of the Blue Jackets design
+ Good colour balancing on the jersey, the dark colours work in favour unlike on the home and road
+ Good logo choices
+ Good execution

- The CLE would look better in white to match the numbers
- Same issue with the numbers not matching the logo
- Collar should be a different colour in some way to help it stand out
- Primary logo is pixelated

Rating: 6.75/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept (By: DT Concepts)

+ I've always liked the idea of blending the 70s baby blue (something that if you're sick of baby blue in sports now you'd hate the 70s) and the robopen era jerseys, this really works. I'ms sure some will think otherwise but I like this idea
+ There are clearly 3 eras of Penguins history and that would make for a greta 50th anniversary jersye
+ The integration of the Robopen era striping isn't perfect, but it works pretty well, more of a sublimated pattern than an actual yoke
+ Goo deduction

- Should like to see the Robopen on the shoulders
- Numbers NEED an outline!
- While I can understand why the yoke would need to be sub laminated, the arms don't

Rating: 8/10

Columbus Blue Jackets Concepts (By: Avi S.)

+ Nice to see the cannon out of the roundel, looks great
+ Striping looks excellent, the non matching hem striping works well and the stars are always a nice touch
+ The jersey itself as a whole reminds me of the Cleveland Crusaders jerseys
+ Great colour balancing
+ Excellent execution

- More of a preference but I would have gone with inverted laces

Rating: 9.75/10 COTW Nom from me on the alternate

University of Vermont Catamounts Concepts (By: Taylor R.)

+ Nice bright colours help make up for the lack of those colours in the logo
+ Striping looks excellent and matches the V
+ Excellent execution, adding the NCAA hockey conference logo, and good logo choices
+ Great colour balancing
+ Curved name bare

- Captain's A is a little too large
- I would have changed the outline of the yoke to match the stripes, white yoke, yellow interior outline, white outer outline

Rating: 9.5/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: Avi S.)

+ While we're all fans of the Stadium Series jerseys in most ways, this is the yellow alternate that'd be widely loved full time, excellent edge conversion
+ New font looks excellent & nice inverted laces
+ Yellow gear looks great, would have thought it wouldn't work but I stand corrected
+ Excellent execution

- Part of me really digs the yellow gear, but it should be used sparingly, that being said the helmet should remain yellow on both (and get the yellow helmets on the white jerseys on occasion)
- It'd be interesting to put the Robopen as the primary, or a roundel, experiment to try to move this away from a direct copy

Rating: 9.75/10

Sunday: A Yellow Jersey 30 Years in the Making

Hi everybody. Welcome back to HJC. Since everybody else has set their opinions on the Vegas Golden Knights logos, I'm going to skip that and go right into the latest NHL jersey reveal. On Friday, the Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled their upcoming Stadium Series jersey and, I must say, it looks beautiful.

Photos from NHL.com
As most people hoped and wished and prayed, the Penguins went with a yellow jersey. Let's get to the judging:
Positives: Yellow jersey with black sleeves with a simple yellow stripe, Simple but effective, City of Champions patch, Penguins logo without the triangle.
Negatives: The white on the collar, the captain's patch, and the number and letter font.
Overall: 8.75/10 I need one now!

Anyways, we have the COTW voting going on as usual and the logo for the Concept of the Year is coming up soon so be prepared.

Onto the Concepts!

 Avi Stein- Chicago Blackhawks
Positives: Really nice to see a black jersey for the Blackhawks. The fact that it does stray away from the original black alternate striping but looks similar enough really makes this an effective jersey.
Negatives: The yoke just bothers me. It's annoying to have the nameplate in the yoke instead of having it under it. It doesn't really have any effect on the design though.
Overall: 9/10

Avi Stein- Detroit Red Wings
Positives: Bringing back the italicized "D" as the primary looks really good on the front of this jersey. The striping works well as well. It balances the jersey perfectly with the logo.
Negatives: None
Positives: 10/10 COTW NOMINEE!

 Avi Stein- Los Angeles Kings
Positives: It's nice that you kept the grey jersey with the black yoke from the first Stadium Series. That jersey always looked really good. Also, Thank you for getting rid of the big black stripe at the bottom. That thing is just terrible on the current jerseys.
Negatives: The gold accents are nice but putting them in the striping is too much gold to be present. Also, I see that you took the original inside collar design and brought it out to the back. While it looks good on the back of the collar, It was nice to see it with some purple as a nod to the original colors and that would have been nice to see on this jersey (subtly I may add).
Overall: 8.5/10

Bradley Debode- Ontario Reign

Positives: There's a lot I like about all of these. To start with the Primary set, the design of the 80's striping with the addition of a modern style yoke really gives this jersey a different look. And as for alternate, A grey version of the current Kings jerseys turned out to be a really good look.
Negatives: That numbering just doesn't go well with the design of the jersey and the TV numbers on the alternate look a little small.
Overall: 8.25/10

Taylor Roy- Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Positives: The striping looks really good on the jersey with the crest logo. Also, the white jersey looks nice with that split navy to white style on the sleeves.
Negatives: Those numbers don't seem to fit the look of the jersey. Maybe something similar to the logo or a tradition block? Other than that this is solid.
Overall: 8.75/10

Taylor Roy- UCONN Huskies
Positives: Much better to see the husky instead of "UCONN" on the front of the jersey and the numbers look a lot better on this jersey than the UND jersey set.
Negatives: Going with a red accent stripe as on the sleeve stripes as well as going with a half sleeve design has a lot going on and that's not always a good thing. Take the red accents or sleeve stripe design down a little with the half stripe design please.
Overall: 8.25/10

Tyler Meli-Skewis- Calgary Flames
Positives:  The striping design looks really good on this. It give a whole new look to the flames jersey design. Also, thank you for getting rid of the accent stripes.
Negatives: The Ranger's style yoke is a little bit much.
Overall: 8.25/10

DT Concepts- New York Islanders
Positives: like the simplicity of the style of it. The basis of the Stadium Series design is nice as well but give it a much more traditional style looks really good.
Negatives: That collar is just strange.
Overall: 8/10

DT Concepts- Los Angeles Kings
Positives: Simple design with a better collar. The simplicity is nice because it gives a design look back to the original style of the jersey.
Negatives: The gold is too prominent on the jersey. It doesn't look like a kings jersey anymore with that much gold.
Overall: 8/10

Ok guys that's all I got. Thanks again for sending in all these concepts. Have a good week and I'll talk to you all next week.

Saturday: The Season Week 3

The winner of the COTW vote for Noveber 11-17 was Brooks F.

Full Results

But we all knew Brooks would win. It was his Kamloops Blazers concept set that took the W. Well done Brooks!

---------------------------------------

The winner of the Washington Capitals ReDesign was first time submitter, HockeyWeek!

Full Results

I was really glad to get in a concept from HockeyWeek. As soon as I saw it I knew it would have a chance to win. Of course with this win HockeyWeek's entry moves into the COTW vote...

---------------------------------------

The new COTW nominees have been listed on the side of the page. The poll will appear to you if you are logged in. The vote is for the week of November 18-24 and also includes HockeyWeek's competition winner. Votes will be counted up until Friday at noon Eastern time.

---------------------------------------

I saw this truck in front of me the other day while I was driving to work.
On the right is Mike Ivall's fantastic Chicago Blackhawks concept logo. This logo has been stolen more times than the Millennium Falcon!

---------------------------------------

I also wanted to post this year's Leafs collectors cup at the Air Canada Centre. The previous 13 years of collectors cups have been average, but I really like this year's because of all the logos featured on it.

I'm well aware that this kind of cup is not exclusive to the Leafs, so let's see what your team offers. Whatever team, whatever league, send in a picture of something cool that is exclusive to the team and/or the stadium. I'll post the best ones here next week.

A new competition will be starting very soon. We need a Concept of the Year 2016 logo. The entry phase will be a two week period and the winner will have their logo used on the 2016 COTY championship plaque!
