Saturday: The Season - FINAL

The winner of the COTW vote for December 16-22 was Matt G!

Full Results

This was a bit of a surprising result as Tyler's Blue Jackets concept was the only concept properly nominated and seconded. Matt's concept was entered by me (as per the COTW rules) because I felt it was the best of the bunch that only received a single nomination. Anyways, congrats to Matt and his winning Skellefteå AIK concept set.

The final COTW nominees for 2016 have been listed on the side of the page in the black poll. Those logged into a Google account will see the poll and will have their vote counted up until Friday at noon Eastern. To see the concepts, click the link in the poll or go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab.

The eight and final week of The Season is upon us. The Final will feature the visiting Amur Khaborvsk and the Colorado Avalanche.

Amur defeated the Ottawa Senators in the Semi-Final to get to this point.

You can vote below, on the side of the page, or on THE SEASON page. Trying to vote on all three pages won't work as Google will simply register your first vote.

This Saturday exclusive competition seemed fairly successful. I would expect to see another Season later this year. If you think The Season was a success or a failure let me know in the comment section at the bottom of this post.

Thanks to everyone who participated and voted. Next week I will reveal who represented each team and I'm sure you guys have some guesses which you can post in the comments. For those who were in The Season please do not confirm your team until next week. You may also now send in the concepts if you wish to have them posted on a regular post.

Going on right now is the "Bring Back the Americans" Competition. You will be able to begin submitting entries on Monday. This was done to lighten the writers' workload during the holiday week. Hopefully you can use the two week submission period to perfect your entries and maybe even take a crack at a logo or two?

With the eBay listing this week of a Pittsburgh Penguins Adidas practice jersey (which was confirmed by the always awesome it has brought me to write down my opinions on what we will see next year.

We will see three stripes. Three stripes wherever Adidas can find room to put them. Yes, even on your team's sweater! Yes, even on the Montreal Canadiens' sweater. Yes, even on the my beloved Maple Leafs' sweater. The hockey sweater, which is held in such high regard by both players and fans will be branded with Adidas' trademark three stripes. No team will be spared.

This is a hastily thrown together idea of what we may see next season
TSN has reported that Adidas will pay the NHL about $70 million a year to make NHL products (including game jerseys). I don't believe for one single second that Adidas would pay $70 million a year and NOT put their branding on these sweaters wherever possible (seen by the entire hockey world every night) . And that means three stripes on all 31 teams' sweaters.

If you don't want those three stripes on your jersey there is an outside chance that you may be in luck! You can take $180 out of your wallet and throw it down on the counter. The clerk will then hand you a brand new replica sweater made by...Fanatics! It looks like the jerseys worn in NHL rinks. It will be absent of Adidas branding, which may include the three stripes on down the side. It will also have Fanatics branding all over it, which you will not see the pros wear on the ice...ever. And for an estimated $100 extra you can get a name and number placed on your copycat jersey. So now you've paid $280 to have a sweater that sort of looks like the one you see on the ice. All of this because the NHL and NHLPA agreed to "boost revenues" coming out of the most recent lockout.
I'm not even going to begin to speculate on what a authentic Adidas jersey will cost you. Yet, I think it's fair to assume that the demand for counterfeit jerseys will only increase with these changes coming from the NHL.

I personally will still wait and see what happens. I will still wait and hope that some teams are spared the three stripe treatment, but my brain knows I'm being extremely foolish. If I am right, and each team gets the three stripes, and we are charged nearly $200 for a blank "copy" of a jersey, then I have come to the end of the story in my jersey collection saga. Sure, it will be fun to go back and enjoy some vintage items, but there will be nothing new to look forward to. Nothing new to get excited about. And nothing new that is worth me spending a large sum of my hard earned money just so rich people can get a little richer.

Friday: Happy New Year

Hello folks, and happy New Year!  Okay it's not officially 2017 yet, but for all intents and purposes this is the first HJC post of 2017.  You see, this week of concepts (the HJC week of December 30th to January 5th) will be part of the Concept-of-the-Month for January, and therefore will be part of the 2017 Concept-of-the-Year (not 2016).  So welcome to 2017 everybody!

Looking ahead, 2017 should be a interesting year for us hockey jersey enthusiasts.  The biggest story will (probably) be the NHL's switch to Adidas jerseys.  I'm staying optimistic about that change, but it also has the potential to go horribly wrong.  Also, a few teams will likely use the switchover as an excuse to redo their uniforms (hopefully Calgary and Colorado will), but I'm guessing the majority of teams will keep their jersey designs intact.  We are guaranteed at least on new set of jerseys though, as the Vegas Golden Knights will need some new uniforms before they can start play in the fall.

There are two votes this week, both with some extra importance.  First of all, this COTW vote is the last COTW vote for 2016, so it's the final chance for someone to make a run at the 2016 COTY crown.  The other vote is for the final of "The Season".  Both polls should be up sometime in the next 24 hours.

"The Season" Final vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)

Boston Bruins, by Kristo L:
Our first concept of 2017 (according to the HJC calendar) is a Boston Bruins set by Kristo.  At first glance I like the black jersey, the bold yellow stripes look good and the name in the stripe is unique.  However, I'm not a fan of the white jersey, the pattern of arm and sock stripes doesn't fit the Bruins (in my opinion), and it looks weird with them being different colours.  There are also a few execution errors, the back numbers are too small, the sleeve numbers are missing, the white jersey's hem stripe is missing from the front, and the logos are a tad large.
Rating: 5/10

Edmonton Oilers, by Lucas D:
Next up we have an Edmonton Oilers concept from Lucas.  I like pretty much everything about this concept besides the striping pattern, the oil-drop on the sleeves is a cool feature, the tweaked logo looks nice, and I'm also a fan of the orange numbers.  However, I think the striping pattern is too similar to the Islanders, it's basically just the Islanders road jersey with orange and blue swapped.  There's also an execution error with the sleeve numbers, the outline is thicker on the front right and back left numbers.
Rating: 7/10

Ottawa Senators, by Phil B:
We also have an Ottawa Senators concept from Phil, which includes their unique laurel-leaf pattern.  I love seeing that pattern return, and I think it's used better here than it was previously.  Although, I wonder if this design would still look as good on a player, since the curve would form a sharp valley which might look weird (or maybe it wouldn't look weird, I don't know).  In addition to the pattern, I also like the rest of this concept, the logo choices are great, the number font is a good fit, and the hem stripes with no gold compliment the sleeves perfectly.
Rating: 8/10

Pittsburgh Penguins, by Jake M:
Today's final concept is a Penguins Stadium Series jersey from Jake, and I think this could be an early contender for COTY 2017.  The logo is really awesome, it combines the P from the old Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL team) with the Penguins golden triangle, and the result is a great blend of both modern and classic.  The jersey itself is good as well, I like the doubled up sleeve stripes, I like that there's now no white at all, and I also like the "City of Champions" hanger effect.  My only complaint is fairly minor, but the angle of the sleeve numbers doesn't quite match the angle of the sleeves.
Rating: 9/10 and my COTW nomination!

That's all folks!

Thursday: West Coast Post

Hello everyone! I hope you all have been enjoying your holidays, whether you're on a long break or not.

Not really any news to report today, aside from what Phil mentioned yesterday about the Centennial patch on every team's jersey starting Sunday. If you'd like to read a bit more on that, check out the post right here! I did have an idea for something though, but I unfortunately came up with it a bit too late to include in this post, so expect to see something next week.

Simple voting for this holiday week, with just the usual COTW vote and Season voting going on. The Americans competition has also been announced, but entries should not be submitted until the new year begins on Sunday. Those entries are then due by next Friday. Especially if you have free time, leave some votes and design some concepts!

COTW Dec 16-22 vote (ends Friday @ noon EST)
Bring Back the Americans Comp (due Friday, January 6 @ noon EST)
The Season Semi-Final vote (ends Friday @ noon EST)

Kristo L. - Anaheim Ducks
+I haven't seen this template before. I like how easy it is to see the whole uniform together with it.
+Good color choices in this one, and those orange pants look surprisingly good.
-Although unless these are meant to be a regular/clash set, or two separate alternates, the black and orange primary colors could become a problem.
-I also think a black helmet would work better for the orange jersey, and the black gloves from the orange jersey should be used on both.
-The back numbers are way too small, and I'm not sure that font is the best fit either.
-These jerseys seem to be designed with a lot of soccer influence. If this was a crossover concept to soccer I think these designs would work great. But for hockey, the jerseys are just way too plain. Add some stripes or some sort of designs to the jerseys! You're going in the right direction with the socks, but keep it consistent too if they're meant to be a set.
+Despite the fact that this look more like a soccer kit, the execution is done well in large part.
Overall: 6/10

Phil B. - Calgary Flames
+A good mix of modern and traditional for the Flames, with the pattern from their older sets and the angled pattern from the newer ones.
+I love the removal of black. I think the Flames look much better without it, or at least keeping it as just a minor accent color.
+I think the yoke works well on the white jersey to add the needed extra color.
+Good job keeping the white and yellow separated so they don't clash.
-Their new roundel logo would look great on the shoulders, recolored without black.
Overall: 8/10

Tyler M-S. - Anaheim Ducks
+Another look that plays on current trends, and fits well for the Ducks.
-I think there would be some comparisons to the Coyotes if this were to actually become a legitimate jersey. Or not, for all I know.
+Good color balance, and if you're going to keep gold and orange together, I like the choice of having the orange much more prominent.
+Good font choice.
-The logo looks a bit small.
+I like the inverted lace collar.
Overall: 8.5/10

Zack R. - Seattle Seahawks
+Interesting adaptation of the Seahawks' football uniforms. Especially that yoke. I can't tell if I like it or not, I may have to see it actually on ice before I could really judge it.
+I like the pattern in the arm stripes, and with the "logo" you used on the front, it was a good choice to have no hem striping and just trim.
-I think the Seahawks' logo deserves to be on the jersey somewhere, or even just the pants.
-The diagonal wordmark looks to be off a bit, and not perfectly diagonal. Mainly when it gets to the WKS it looks to go off of the angle of the rest of the letters.
-Having two sets of pants here is completely useless realistically, as the change is very minimal and it would just create extra money for the team to spend and extra gear to haul and store. I'm also not sure which pair is supposed to go with which jersey, unless they're meant to be used interchangeably with both.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW Nomination

That's all for today. I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week!

December 28, 2016

Wednesday: 2016 Sucked

Never mind the celebrity deaths from this past year (now sadly including Star Wars icon Carrie Fisher), 2016 was not one of the best years in jersey design in my opinion. First we had the World Cup jerseys, which each included the Adidas stripes and a shoulder patch with the SAP sponsorship logo. We had the introduction of MORE shoulder numbers (well it started in 2015 but it should've died there in Edmonton, or at least been contained). Then we had the trademark circus that was the Vegas Golden Knights. A weird rebrand in Florida with a quality logo and not so quality jerseys. A bland rebrand in Toronto, though better than a crazy rebrand. USA Hockey's insistence on white helmets with dark navy jerseys continued into the World Cup and now Juniors as we saw Monday against Latvia. The Sharks teasing us with beautiful logos only to keep them as fashion-brand logos. And finally the mediocrity of many of the new special-event jerseys in the NHL, like the 50th Anniversary jerseys of Philadelphia and Los Angeles and the Stadium Series jerseys.

There were some bright spots however. Pittsburgh getting with the (old) times and promoting their third jersey to full time with a matching away. Winnipeg's Heritage Classic Jerseys. The 50th Anniversary logos (outside of St. Louis). The Blues' Winter Classic jersey (and Chicago's to an extent). The NWHL's new jerseys in New York and Connecticut. The Vegas Golden Knights' primary logo. The NHL's Centennial Celebration branding. Boston and Montreal's Winter Classic. But fear not, because 2017 will be fully loaded with jersey design news. It could be good, it could be bad. We shall see starting Sunday!

Speaking of starting Sunday, Dave Maetzold of Fox Sports Ohio (TV home of the Blue Jackets) is reporting that the new 100th Anniversary logo will be on all NHL jerseys starting this Sunday.

All we know now is that it will be under the TV numbers for the Columbus Blue Jackets. I expect similar positioning throughout the NHL, considering that many teams have two shoulder patches already with alternate logos (like Columbus) and some teams have numbers or patches on the front of the jersey already. The Rangers have their diagonal script in the way, the Coyotes and Red Wings have their captaincy patches on that side of the jersey as well. We shall see more develop on this story before Sunday.

Speaking of before Sunday, Saturday will begin the FINALS for the Season. This week, San Jose, Milwaukee and New York were all eliminated, setting up Amur and Ottawa in the Semis, with Colorado waiting in the Final. San Jose had the narrowest defeat, Milwaukee putting out a poor jersey (in my opinion) and New York's leap of faith crashed and burned miserably. Vote now!

Speaking of vote now, we also have the COTW vote as usual, with next week's COTW vote *ALMOST* wrapping up the playing field for COTY 2016 Because the HJC cycle runs from 12:01 PM Friday to 12:00 next Friday, this Friday's concepts will be eligible for one last COTW vote for 2016. The yearly competition is almost over, then we'll get started on the new year (and COTY finals).

Speaking of competition, we have a new one to transition into the new year! This one is a big one. We are resurrecting the Americans back into the NHL! And it doesn't have to be New York or Brooklyn (though it can). It can also be Rochester (but that's low hanging fruit, be creative). Any city within the United States. You can keep old logos, make new ones, even modernize the old ones, or all three. Give us new jerseys and bring them to life! For a bonus you may be able to give us something special for them as a wild card aspect to the competition. Entry deadline is January 6th. Just don't send them in until at least Sunday, January 1, 2017. No earlier, as per Ryan's discretion.

Speaking of Ryan's discretion..... I got nothing this time to link to so let's just get on with it.

Lucas D: Detroit Red Wings Concept

Lucas brings us a Red Wings concept based on two of their three latest outdoor games, the upcoming Centennial Classic and the 2014 Winter Classic. It has the traditional look and feel of an everyday Red Wings jersey, combined with the four stripes on the arms (what is this, Brooklyn?) and one on the hem. The arm stripes crowd out the TV numbers so a simple solution is to slide the stripes down a bit. Let the numbers breathe. I think the one stripe at the bottom could be replaced by a simple hem trim, running perfectly along the bottom. I like the logo (and how it's perfectly inversed on the away jerseys). I just wish there were arched nameplates, as per tradition with the Wings. There's plenty of room on the jersey for it.

Rating: 85%

Taylor R: Nashville Predators Concept

Let me get this out of the way first: I LOVE the yellow pants. At the same time I HATE the yellow helmet. The checker-board pattern is back for Nashville and this is set up to be the perfect alternate. Striping pattern is clean and uniform all throughout. The name is a tad big on the back. Execution note: On the collar I can still see those neon green template fillers at the ends of the collar. Fix that and add blue helmets and we have a winner.

Rating: 83%

Tyler M-S: Philadelphia Flyers Concept

This looks like an Edge-ification of the Flyers black jerseys from the post-Lindros era. Because of that I don't like how this template works out for that. Coloring the large yoke and the upper arm segments together doesn't recreate the smooth striping pattern the original had. I don't like how the orange and white are balanced here. Socks are improved over the original though.

Rating: 75%

Zack R: Detroit Red Wings vs. Marquette Prison Pirates Concept

I had to do my research in order to properly review this concept. On February 2, 1954, the Detroit Red Wings played a game against inmates from Marquette Prison in the Upper Peninsula, as a challenge from the prison warden. Imagine the Adam Sandler film "The Longest Yard" but with hockey instead of football and an actual professional team instead of the guards. The Red Wings have a photo gallery from this special match here. It shows the Wings in a color-on-color match-up, with the Pirates wearing numbers on the front of their jerseys, instead of some sort of team name or logo. Here, Zack puts the Wings in white against a Pirates team in blue and grey. Historically speaking, these jerseys look accurate minus the name on the back of the Detroit jersey. Lacking TV numbers is good from a historical standpoint. However, the use of an Edge template with NHL tags is not, especially for Marquette Prison, since they aren't an NHL team. Striping also should completely overlap template lines on both jerseys, especially Detroit's. A good idea that needs a few more details to be perfect. Maybe you or someone else can modernize this match-up?

The winner of my Concept of the Week Nomination is:

And that does it for 2016. For me at least. Ryan closes out the New Year, with Brendan and Steve G in between. See you on the other side!

Tuesday: Sweater Weather

Welcome to this Tuesday's post! I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Since there's no news, and the only thing known to be coming up is Pictures from the outdoor games, I encourage you to share what jerseys you got in the comments! I unfortunately didn't any, but I did get a new pair of skates!

Don't forget to vote!!!

COTW Dec 16-22 vote (ends Friday @ noon EST)

The Season Semi-Final vote (ends Friday @ noon EST)

On to the concepts!!!

Lucas D.- 2018 Winter Classic (NHL)
Lucas brings us his idea for the 2018 Winter Classic. The NHL has already started repeating matchups, so why not another one? And with the Hawks of course! It wouldn't be an outdoor game without them right?

  • Like I said above, very realistic. This could actually happen...
  • Chicago has never worn red outdoors, so this is a good choice!
  • I like that Pittsburgh is a little more black heavy than their current aways...
  • Can't go wrong with a tie down for a Winter Classic!
  • I like the old striping pattern, logo, and simple numbers for Chicago.

  • While I do like that the Pittsburgh jersey is more black heavy, it does need a little more yellow...
  • No Crossed Tomahawk patches? They've had those every year since they switched to this style...
  • I'd also like to see equipment. They could add some much needed yellow to the Pens... Or at least socks... I can assume the sock pattern for both, but I'm not 100% sure. Especially for Pittsburgh. Do they have the normal road socks? Do the socks match the striping pattern?

My rating: It's a fantastic uniform matchup, and even if it's the Hawks again next year, this would make it a bit more tolerable! But also, as much as I enjoy your concepts, they're incomplete without equipment... 8/10

Phil B.- Vegas Golden Knights (NHL)
Next up we have Phil with his prediction for the Knights!

  • I really like the Slate Grey home jersey!
  • I also like the striping pattern. It would be a very good look for the Knights!
  • I also like the Canuck-esque  "V"s on the sleeves. Fantastic idea there!
  • The more I look at this concept, the more I like the number font!
  • Good job keeping the equipment simple. It's already a busy look.

  • I already said it was a busy look, but the shoulder yokes really clutter the sweaters. losing those would be much better.
  • You used the secondary logo, which has red, but there was no red anywhere else...
  • The gold NOB & #OB of the home jersey is hard to read...
  • Adidas logo should be the manufacturer logo on back as they take over next year, which would be the first season of the Knights...

My rating: I'd love to see Vegas start out in these! 7/10

Lucas D.- Stadium Series 2017 (NHL)
Lucas's second concept of the day is also his second Stadium Series concept! This one is a fix of this year's matchup!

  • The yellow-black matchup looks great!
  • White numbers for Philly works much better than black numbers!
  • I do like the orange nameplate on here
  • The Colored upper sleeves on the Pens jersey looks great, and fits their branding perfectly!
  • Logos look great!
  • I also really like the striping pattern on both jerseys... The two on Pittsburgh's, and the 4 on Philly's really compliment each other (Although, if you're counting Cups, they should be reversed. HA! GOT EM!)
  • I also really like that thin shoulder yoke for the Flyers...

  • The Pens jersey is really bare. It needs something. I think a tail stripe would really help it.
  • The manufacturer logo on the back should be Reebok, as Adidas doesn't take over until next year.

My rating: A much better look for the outdoor game this year! But no equipment really hurts this concept... 8/10

Brooks F.- Red Deer Rebels (WHL; CHL)
Brooks first of the Afternoon brings us a redesign of the Red Deer Rebels for his CHL redesign series!

  • I always think of the Rebels as a Black-Red-White team, so red as an alt. is a good choice.
  • The striping pattern really matches the Horns on the logo...
  • The Modified Kings font does as well
  • Good choice on the simple helmet and breezers!

  • I don't really like how you used grey/silver for the alt. but didn't include it on the home and road...
  • You used "15" for the number so it fits on the back and on the little sleeve area, but if you were to use a wider number, like 55, or 24, it would be overlapping the stripes everywhere, and wouldn't looks as professional. Using a thinner font, or widening out the distance between the two side panels and the shoulder yoke design.
  • You're missing the manufacturing logo

My Rating: As much as I think of the Rebels as a more traditional team, in at least the sweaters that they wear, this works incredibly well! 9/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!

Brooks F.- Prince George Cougars (WHL; CHL)
Brooks continues his CHL redesign series with his second of the day for the Prince George Cougars!
  • I really like the gradient on the black jersey!
  • The number font works really well with the logos and the design of the jersey
  • Fauxback looks great!
  • Good choice using the old logo. The current is pretty bad...
  • I do like the sleeve length yoke with the tapered end.

  • The White jersey has the same problems as the Winnipeg Jets current road. The stripes work on the sleeve length yoke, but are too light on the hem and socks. Even using an extra black outline on the stripes would improve that.
  • #OB on the white jersey is also too light, and would be very hard too see...
  • Missing the manufacturing logo

My rating: A great update for a team that REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, (yes, that is the main logo sublimated in light blue) needs it... 7.5/10

Well, that's all for today! Come back next week for more from me! Happy New Year!!!

December 26, 2016

Monday: Boxing Day Blowout

Happy semi-great deals on stuff day! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas or Chanukah or Festivus or that thing from the Star Wars Holiday Special...LIFE DAY...yeah...that......and you've enjoyed time with family, friends and jerseys (because hockey is off until tomorrow).

If you got any jersey for Christmas or the above listed alternative holidays (Except Life Day) you can share it on Twitter and use #HJCxmas to show the HJC community your jersey haul. You can also resort to the old try and true send it to Ryan and he'll maybe MAYBE put it in the next weekend update.

Ryan was lucky enough to get a Mitchell & Ness Wayne Gretzky Burger King jersey, something that is becoming a rarity, and a Phil Kessel 2014 Maple Leafs alternate. You can check them out on the HJC Twitter account.
I was luck enough to get a St. John's Ice Caps Newfoundland Regiment jersey in goalie cut (will get Charlie Lindgren on the back) and one of my best friends from Oakville has sent a training camp 2002 Florida Panthers home (which was white at the time) jersey which is currently in transit and I'm in for a surprise what name is on the back. I sent him a 2000 Calgary Flames alternate, which will don the name of Fred Brathwaite
My other best friend was lucky enough to get a Pittsburgh away from this season, a CCM vintage 1995-96 Avalanche home jersey and a 2010 Flyers Winter Classic jersey. I'm not so surprising him with a Turdburger with the one and only Arturs Irbe on the back (remember when that happened?).

Share your jersey stories in the comments.

We will not have an entry phase for a contest on HJC until the new year as Ryan is giving us writers and of course himself a break. This should give you plenty of time to work on your BRING BACK THE AMERICANS contest. As the banner says click it to see all the rules, but more importantly take this as a chance to get outside of your comfort COULD put the Americans back in Brooklyn or New York, but why not Omaha...yeah....I challenge YOU, the reader to put the Americans in Omaha, Nebraska.

Don't forget to vote for COTW. Tyler M-S. gets another shot at a COTW win with 2 weeks left, but is in tight against the commissioner's pick (haven't had one of those in the ASG, since 1998 I think), Matt G. to face him this week.

The Season is in its Semi Finals phase, and similarly to the Scotties or Tim Horton's Brier where the winner will face the highest seeded winner of the Quarter Finals. Click the tab on the blog and get voting!

The Season Semi-Final vote (ends Friday @ noon EST)

On with today's 5 concepts!

Chicago Express ECHL Concepts (By: Phil B.)

+ Love the look of the powder blue and white. It has a nice polar feel to it and I can assure you Chicago is polar in the winder
+ Track stripes on the arms look good
+ Hem stripe fits in with the rest of the jersey
+ Great execution

- The old Flames numbers don't really go with the chrome font on the logo. Using the 2016 ASG font would look great
- Shoulder patch is slightly too close to the collar
- Collars are identical on both jerseys

Rating: 8.75/10

Regina Pats WHL Concepts (By: Brooks F.)\

+ The current Pats jerseys are gorgeous with their mix of the 96 Jets and Rangers alternate, though I do agree with Brooks something more original would be nice
+ The white scrip looks absolutely amazing
+ Throwback is excellent, don't have to fix what isn't broken
+ Great execution

- The home and road striping aren't bad, but I can't help but see these as re-logoed Windsor Spitfires jerseys, the Pats have never really worn anything similar to this and have struck to the classics. That isn't to say I'm not in favour of a more modern look, but these feel like great Spirtfires jerseys instead of good Pats jerseys
- To make the alternate more interesting, one could swap the script of the dog head but that's a lateral move

Rating: 8.5/10

San Jose Sharks Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ Lucas seems to really be toying with the arm band meeting the arm stripes look and I have to say this is probably his best use of it on a white jersey so far
+ The little tail on the edge of the striping looks like a wave, nice touch
+ Great logo and colour distribution on all 3 jerseys
+ Alternate is a nice throwback
+ Great execution

- NOB and numbers are too close on teh whose and road
- I would have out the inverse laces on the alternate as it isn't a direct fauxback, and would keep it from being too Blackhawksy

Rating: 9/10 COTW Nom. from me!

Carolina Hurricanes Concepts (By: Tyler M-S.)

+ Right away the alternate looks great. It's not perfect, but the 07-13 Canes jerseys would have looked good in black
+ Colour balancing on the jerseys is perfect, at least in the striping, it reminds me a lot of the 1995-2001 Flames jerseys on the arms! I personally love those jerseys and it seems to look good with the Canes

- The jerseys desperately need shoulder patches, the black jersey would be near COTW nomination level if you made those two changes and added some red to the socks
- If you remember Tyler's COTW runner up Vegas concept the home and road are very similar to it, not necessarily a bad thing but it looked much better for Vegas and as is there isn't much difference between the two jerseys

Rating: 6.5/10 H&R 7.25/10 Alt

Afternoon all. Merry Christmas. No post today because of the holidays. I'm working on a super post for the New Years post. Have a good week and see you all next week.

Saturday: The Season Semi-Final

Ho Ho Ho! Merry Christmas Eve everyone. Whatever you may be doing or celebrating this day I encourage you to find something that makes you happy and take 5 minutes and do that thing, for yourself. Maybe it's reading this blog today?

The winner of the COTW vote for December 9-15 was Zack R's Detroit Red Wings Centennial Classic concept.

Full Results

With only two votes to go in 2016 Zack has put himself in a good position to contend for the COTW-December. As we approach the end of the year these I really look forward to the votes more and more.

The COTW nominees for December 16-22 have been listed on the side of the page. Only one concept (Tyler's Blue Jackets concept) was nominated and seconded this week. As per the rules, I can choose any amount of concepts to join in the vote. I have chosen my favourite concept for this past week, Matt G's Skellefteå AIK set. Those signed into a Google account can vote on the side of the page. Votes will be counted up until Friday at noon Eastern time.

We have just started a new competition here on HJC. Please give the writers a break this week and don't send in your entries until January 1. They're not due until January 6 anyways.

The competition is the "Bring Back the Americans Competition". You're bringing back the Americans, but there are a few guidelines and rules to follow, so be sure to check out the COMPETITION tab by clicking it or the banner at the top of the page. Have fun and good luck!

While trying to come up with the 2017 COTW marks I hit a block and can't create anything that is good. If anyone would be willing to take a shot at this please do! This is not an official competition or anything, more just a desperate cry for help.

The first round of the Playoffs for The Season have wrapped up. Unfortunately vote totals were VERY low, with only 12 people casting their vote. This week I have put the poll underneath the COTW poll to try and grab some more votes. Either way, here are the results from the first round...

Colorado's victory has given them a bye straight into the Final next week, as they were the highest ranked team heading into the playoffs. Ottawa was the second highest ranked team so they will play as the home team against Amur Khabarovsk. The winner advances to play the Avalanche. Good luck to both teams. The poll is below and votes will be counted up until Friday at noon Eastern time.

Friday: Double Eve

Hello folks, happy Christmas Eve Eve!  I wanted to do something holiday related for the intro today, so I decided to look back and find all the Christmas themed concepts to appear on HJC.  By my count there have been six such concepts (let me know if I missed any, I'll add them to the post), which I've arranged in chronological order below.

Concept from December 26, 2011 (not eligible for COTW).
Back in 2011, Stéphane created a hypothetical outdoor game called the Christmas Classic between the North Pole Reindeers and the Santa's Dwarfs.  The jerseys he designed were Christmas-y but not too crazy, and he paired them with a couple of great wordmark logos (I especially like the antlers on the Reindeers wordmark).

Concept from December 12, 2012 (not eligible for COTW).
A year later we got a trio of Christmas jerseys from Bren.  He created his own logos, a Santa hat and a wrapped present, which he used on three colourful jerseys.

Concept from December 20, 2012 (not eligible for COTW).
Also from 2012 is Joey's concept based off of Santa's red suit.  The belt stripe and back numbers are great additions, but what really topped this off was the inclusion of Santa's big white beard.

Concept from December 25, 2014 (not eligible for COTW).
We know jump ahead a couple years for David's Los Angeles Kings Christmas sweater.  I could easily see the Kings wearing this if they were a minor league team, the knitted sweater effect is perfect, and I love the snow on the numbers and the Santa hat on the burger king logo.

Concept from December 2, 2015 (not eligble for COTW).
Last year we got a look at this design that Niklas created for the Hamburg Freezers, which the Freezers actually wore for Christmas in 2014.  I love the winter-y scene on this jersey, it makes perfect sense for a team called the "Freezers".

Concept from January 6, 2016 (not eligible for COTW).
Our final holiday concept is Jay's Augsburger Panther Christmas jersey from last January.  My favourite features of this concept are the Christmas tree side panels and the bow in the arm and sock stripes. they're both very unique ideas.

Now since these are old concepts they're not eligible to be nominated for COTW, but you can still let us know which of them is your favourite.

We have an easy week voting wise over the holidays, there's just the standard COTW vote.  The poll should be up before tomorrow.

COTW Dec 16-22 vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)

Edmonton Oilers, by Brian B:
Brian starts us off with an update of the Oilers 2001-07 third jersey, using their old copper and red colour scheme.  To my surprise, these logos actually look quite good in this colour scheme, I thought they might only work in navy and silver.  The hem stripe was also changed to hem trim, which I wouldn't mind except I'd prefer it in copper rather than white.  Execution is mostly good, but only half of the shoulder logos and sleeve numbers should be visible on each sleeve.
Rating: 7/10

Calgary Flames, by Phil B:
Next up we have a very unique concept from Phil (aka, HJC's Wednesday writer).  The gradient striping is undoubtedly bold, and it fits the team's name, but I just don't think it looks good.  In my opinion, the gradient would be better in a complimentary role, instead of as the main feature.  Moving past that, I love the white gloves and how they match the end of the sleeves, but I think a single outline on the logo, name, and numbers would be better.  Also, the sleeve numbers are wrong on the white jersey.
Rating: 7/10

Portland Winterhawks, by Brooks F:
The Winterhawks current look is nearly an exact copy of the Chicago Blackhawks, so Brooks decided to give them a set of jerseys they could call their own.  I really like the idea of the four colours in the striping, and I think it looks great up close, but from a distance those stripes get a bit muddled looking.  Increasing the size of the stripes may solve that problem.  The third jersey, which is based off of an old Portland Rosebuds jersey, is perfect as is.  I especially love the use of feathers instead of hockey sticks above the sash stripe.
Rating: 8/10

Buffalo Sabres, by Lucas D:
For our last concept of the day, Lucas has designed some new jerseys for the Sabres.  The home jersey is very similar to their original blue jersey, except it uses single colour numbers and their current shade of navy blue.  Of those changes, I like the simpler numbers and I'm ambivalent towards the navy blue.  The road jersey is more of a new design, with a yoke that extends until the sleeve stripes.  I'm still unsure about this style yoke, I sort of think it looks a bit unnatural or contrived, but I also find it somewhat intriguing.
Rating: 8/10 and my COTW nomination.

That's all folks!  Have a Happy Hanukkah tomorrow, a Merry Christmas the day after that, or just a nice weekend if you don't celebrate either of those holidays!

Thursday: Reviewsday

...I suppose that pun would have been better on a Tuesday...oh well.

Hi everyone! Welcome back.

Like I said last week I had something planned for you guys, and I'm here to deliver.

So as a lot of different jersey designs have been getting released, and I haven't been talking about a lot of them or giving them proper reviews, so now it's time. I can't remember what I have and haven't reviewed, so I'll just do them all. All in one post. Consider it my Christmas present to you all. Let's get to it!

Heritage Classic - Winnipeg Jets vs. Edmonton Oilers
+Beautiful, beautiful throwback look.
+I actually think the darkening of the blue really helps, it contrasts more with the white so it looks sharper.
+The jet on the pants is beautiful.
-The number font is a bit bulky for my tastes. Not too bad though.
Overall: 9/10

I swear I freaked out when they unveiled this at the draft last year because of how excited I was. I probably reviewed it then, let's revisit.
-I was disappointed they just went with their alternate from the past 2 years instead of something new, but I understand the choice.
+Love the orange primary color. Nice break from their usual set.
+Great color balance on this uniform.
+This seems to be a love or hate feature, and for the shoulder numbers I'm on the love side. Shoulder numbers look great in my opinion, when used properly.

Overall: 9/10

Centennial Classic - Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Detroit Red Wings

-What better way to celebrate a historic event like the centennial of the league with a design that honors only a small portion of their history, so it barely makes sense in the brand! Plus, it's not even a direct throwback, and also similar to your rival's jerseys! *sigh*
+Overall I like the just doesn't fit for this game.
+I do like the addition of silver on both of these jerseys.
-On this one, I think it should be thicker and separated from the white, though.
+At least the stripe goes all the way around on this one.
+The lace up collar is nice.
Overall: 7/10, so much wasted opportunity.

Images from
+This one is an almost direct copy of a Detroit Cougars' jersey, but with hem stripes and a Wings logo. Without a fauxback that fits with the brand, a direct throwback or almost direct throwback is the way to go to honor the past.
-Now I said I like the silver in both of these jerseys, and I still do, but I don't like the way it's incorporated on this one. It blends into the white too much and renders the top stripe very hard to see, especially from a distance. I think the best way to incorporate it would be in the numbers and logo, like they have, and maybe a cuff or hem trim, or something like that.
+Like I mentioned, I do like the silver in the logo and numbers.
+Great collar choice.
Overall: 8/10

Winter Classic - St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks
+Great throwback look. Just a beautiful jersey.
+Those shades of blue and yellow are amazing together.
-This would look so, so much better with regular white.
+On one hand I don't like the inconsistency of the arm and hem stripe sizes. On the other hand I love the historical accuracy of it. I have to give it the upvote because of the accuracy, though, as that's what these games are for. If this was going to be their new home jersey, I'd prefer they changed it to be consistent, though.
+Great collar choice.
Overall: 9/10 and my not-quite-a-COTW nomination

-Wait, is this the Hawks' current road jersey, their 2015 Winter Classic jersey, or the 2017 Winter Classic jersey? They're so similar it's hard to tell.
Obviously they have their differences, and us jersey nerds can easily spot the smallest differences, but there's no denial that they're incredibly similar, and an average fan may not even notice the difference. Give us something new, there are a lot of past designs to choose from.
+Of the differences on this jersey, though, I love them all. The logo, collar, "shoulder" patch placement, and the filled out hem. They look great.
Really not much else to say about this one.
Overall: 8/10 design wise, 4/10 creativity wise

Stadium Series - Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers

+Props for something new, and a yellow jersey. I was really hoping for that.
+The skating penguin outside of the triangle was so weird at first, but it's growing on me.
-Not a fan of the placement of the keystone patch. Put it in the same place the Stadium Series logo patch is, keep it consistent.
+I haven't seen too much praise for this, but I quite like the number and name font.
-Maybe the stencil pattern should be taken off of the name, though, to improve legibility slightly.
+As mentioned earlier, I love the shoulder numbers.
Overall: 8/10

Photos from
+A black base is a good choice to contrast from the Penguins' yellow.
+The blocky, simplistic design matches current trends.
-The point of the Stadium Series jerseys having gigantic numbers is to improve visibility in a large Stadium, right? How else do we improve visibility? Make the numbers only an outline? Perfect! *sigh* (not shown in the above photos).
+The TV numbers are fine, though, and the actual font is nice.
-I don't think the nameplate works too well on this one.
Overall: 8/10

Well I hope you guys enjoyed this long intro, now I'm all caught up with the reviews I think. Merry Christmas!

This week we have the COTW vote like always, plus The Season's round 1 Playoff votes, so go and leave a few quick and easy votes!

COTW Dec 9-15 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
The Season Quarterfinal vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)

Avi S. - Vegas Golden Knights
+Really like the use of color here, especially adding the red trim.
+Similarly, good color balance.
+The simple, relatively blocky design plus the upper arm fill fits well with current trends along with Adidas' design style.
+Good font choice overall.
-I think the number font could be just a little better, but it still looks fine as it is.
Overall: 9/10

Brooks F. - Vegas Golden Knights

+Yet another design that sticks with some trends, along with Adidas' blocky type of style.
+The two tone design works well with similar tones of colors (real life example: LA Kings) but not so much with different ones (San Jose Sharks), so good choices on when and when not to use that design.
-This might be just me, but I'm personally not a fan of the cut off chest stripe.
+Good color balance.
Overall: 8/10

Gimmik - Carolina Hurricanes

I don't recognize your name, so if you're new, welcome!
+Carolina really needs a more unique redesign, this is a step in the right direction.
+Good use of black. Better than they have it now.
-The design is a little too busy though. Drop the yokes.
+Good color balance.
-Those large gaps in between your main stripes would be perfect for the flag pattern, a huge missed opportunity on that one.
-I appreciate you trying to go out of the box, but the design you have at the top of the socks plus the player number there just flat out doesn't look good, if it's even visible. Socks aren't the place for that.
+I apologize about the mistake with the socks comment, no idea how I missed that up. Your socks are fine. Not something I see in presentation often I suppose.
-Not sure how I missed this earlier either, but the TV numbers are a bit small and cramped.
Overall: 7.5/10

Matt G. - Skellefteå AIK

+This one's a nice vintage, yet modern, and classy look.
+Great color balance.
+Great way of incorporating current and past designs into this set.
+Great simplification of the logo. Much nicer and classier.
+I like the modern pants design.
+I really like the glove design too.
-This is a minor, minor nitpick, but I think the hem stripe on the away jersey should be a solid color just like the other two.
Overall: 9.5/10 and my COTW nomination

And that's all for today! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week! Oh yeah, and Merry Christmas to all of you, or Happy Holidays, or happy whatever doesn't offend you!
