Saturday: Denver, The Sunshine State. Gorgeous!

The winner of the COTW vote for April 17-23 was Taylor R. and his Colorado Avalanche Winter Classic concept.

Full Results

Taylor's concept went head-to-head with Brooks' concepts and prevailed this week. These guys are both talented enough that we could have done a best of 7 and it would go the distance.

The new COTW nominees for April 24-30 have been listed in the black poll on the side of the page. Voting ends on Friday at 11:59pm Eastern. It's your standard HJC poll. You need a Google account to vote and you need to be signed into it.

The winner of the RHI ReDesign was DT Concepts!

Full Results

DT's Toronto Planets entry took this one. It's a simple logo set that is executed very well. The colour choices are excellent and really help this concept. Well done DT Concepts and we look forward to seeing more in the future!

It's now time for the next competition, the Falcons to Tucson Competition! The Arizona Coyotes are going to buy the Springfield Falcons and move them to Tucson in time for the 2016-17 AHL season. This new competition puts you in the place of the design team to create the new identity.

I've given this competition a two week entry phase. This allows the logo artists and extra week to put something together if they would like. For others this is a chance to give something new a try. TRY to create a logo. TRY a new more advanced template. Give the entries some more time and you may surprise yourself with what you can do. Entries are due on Friday, May 13 at 10:30pm Eastern.

Friday: New Template

Hello folks!  By now you might have started to think the template I previewed way back on April 1st was actually an April fools day prank, but it was no joke and now I'm finally ready to unveil it.  Here it is, the Combo template...

I'm calling this the Combo template because it's a combination of the template from and the template from the Paint Users Paradise thread on the SportsLogos.Net forum.  Above is a blank version of this template, but I also created versions for all 91 NHL team jerseys worn this season, you can find them all right HERE.

In other news (which you've probably seen already), the Florida Panthers new logo may have been leaked, courtesy of Paul Lukas from Uni Watch.

I like it!  If this turns out to be the real deal, which I think it is, then I'll be a happy hockey fan.  The panther itself is particularly nice, it's much simpler than their current panther and it looks tough without being overly aggressive.  I don't mind the shield or wordmark either.

Do you think this is the Panthers actual new logo, and if so do you like it?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Did you get your round 2 Playoff Pool picks in yet?  If not too bad, the deadline was today at noon Eastern time.  However you still have time to vote for the COTW and the RHI Competition.

Colorado Avalanche, by Dylan T:
+  It's always nice to see the mountain pattern make a comeback.
-  Although, I think the stripes would look better if they were a tad thicker.
+  I like the new colour scheme with navy blue added.
-  The maroon and navy blue blend together on the white jersey.  I don't know what the exact solution would be, but I think those colours need to be kept apart.
-  The shoulder patches should only be half visible.
-  The sleeve numbers are missing and there's no back view, so we can't tell what the numbers would be like.
+  The half and half jersey style looks great in these colours.
+  I also like that the design is also somewhat similar to the Colorado state flag.
-  I'd like to see the back to know if the split design continues around the whole jersey.
Rating:  7/10

New York Rangers, by Lucas D:
+  The striping is both modern and classic, which works great for an old franchise using a modern logo like the Lady Liberty logo.
+  The yoke is especially nice, it's similar-ish to their current road jersey but the angled ends make it feel modern and fresh.
-  I think the stripes on the arms are a bit to close to the cuffs, the blue area could get hidden under the gloves.
+  No Adidas stripes!
-  I'd like to see the pants to know if they would be red or blue.  I think blue pants might look better.
Rating:  8/10

Pittsburgh Penguins, by Ryan C:
+  The striping pattern doesn't look bad, however...
-  When I see this pattern I instantly think of Minnesota.  I know this pattern is used on the Penguins current socks, but I'd like to see something more unique to the Penguins.
+  I love the number font.  Also, I didn't think I'd like vegas gold numbers, but they actually look good and they match the triangle in the logo.
+  No Adidas stripes!
Rating:  8/10

Erie Otters, by Ryan C:
+  The striping pattern is great.  It reminiscent of the Panthers original red jersey (which I also loved), but it's not a direct copy.
-  I wonder if it would look better without shoulder yokes, I don't think they add anything to the design, and the jerseys would be less cluttered without them.
+  I haven't changed my mind since the last concept, I still like the number font.
+  I like your presentation style for both your concept today.
Rating:  8/10

Denver Pioneers, by Steven M:
+  No hem stripes.  Some people might think that's a negative, but I think this concept looks good without them.
+  On it's own the road jersey's striping pattern has too much gold, but paired with the red numbers, name, and wordmark (and I'm guessing red equipment) it balances out.
-  Although maybe the cuffs would be better red, to better match the collar.
-  The only black on this concept is in the logos.  I think they would look better without black.
Rating:  8/10

San Jose Sharks, by Matt M:
+  It's a simple idea, the Sharks original jerseys with orange and their current logo, but it looks great (however, the simplicity of the idea is the only thing keeping me from nominating this for COTW).
+  The execution and presentation is amazing.  I love the half and half background like what Adidas used when unveiling the World Cup jerseys.
-  The NHL shield should be on the collar.
+  No Adidas stripes!
Rating:  8/10

Pittsburgh Penguins, by Taylor R:
+  The Bruins wouldn't complain about this colour scheme.  Honestly I wouldn't want the Penguins to use blue and yellow together in real life, but it makes for a very interesting concept.
+  The pants are awesome.
+  You can't go wrong using their pre-edge striping pattern.
-  I'd prefer if the logo on the white jersey had a blue outline as well.
Rating:  8/10

Columbus Blue Jackets, by Taylor R:
+  The Ohio state flag striping has been done before, but this version looks great.
+  I like the blue shoulder area on the white jersey and how it keeps the state-flag pattern always touching blue.
+  The silver surrounding the state-flag striping is also a nice addition.
+  I really have no complaints about this concept at all.
Rating:  9/10 and my COTW nomination!

That's all folks!  Come back this Sunday for the blog's 2000th post, I'm sure Caz has something great planned to celebrate the occasion.

Thursday: Teal & Blue

The way things are going so far these playoffs seem to be one to remember. Outside of things like the Islanders' first series win since the early 90s, there's been a few interesting things outside of the hockey itself this year. So, why not share my favorites, er, the only two I know of.

I use twitter quite often, so naturally that's where these both come from. While a lot of people just begin to watch hockey at some point in their lives, one guy took advantage of it and gained a large following on twitter by 'live tweeting' the first game he watched, and pretty humorously too, I believe it was St. Louis and Chicago Game 7. This is my personal favorite from that night.
He's actually gained enough attention that the Blues are hooking him up with tickets to one game and a jersey. Nice move by the Blues to welcome in their new fan.

Now this one may be getting a bit more coverage than the last, being covered on SportsCenter, TSN, The Score, and possibly even more that I don't know about.
Long story short, he's keeping his promise and doing it. If you'd like to read more, there's a recap of it that you can check out right here, so that way I don't keep talking about a Gary Bettman tattoo on a hockey jersey blog.

So unlike yesterday,  now we actually know the teams in round two, which means you can choose the San Jose and Nashville now! Now to Ryan, for the playoff pool update:

*** EDIT BY RYAN ***

The 2nd Round of the Playoff will begin on Wednesday...before the 1st Round is complete! This will affect the Playoff Pool and submitting picks. I have determined the fairest way to deal with this is to give everyone two days of Round 2 for free.

You get to watch the Islanders-Lightning game before you submit your picks. You will also get to watch all Thursday games if you wish, before submitting your picks.

Round 2 picks will be due by FRIDAY at noon Eastern time.

Just a heads up.

Along with that, things have calmed down a tad, with the COTW vote to go to, essentially a 1v1 this week when it comes to the concept artists, and also the RHI competition to vote for. This post won't go anywhere, so it's okay if you go vote

COTW April 17-23 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
RHI Top 3 vote (ends Friday @ 10:30pm Eastern)

So last week I tried out that new review style, and Steven used it last Friday, and as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so I'm going to give it another go (but with a darker green this time). Just let me know if it's good to go still!

Alan S. - San Jose Sharks
-Like Phil mentioned yesterday, the template is fairly rough, mainly around the edges, but it's a good adaptation of those Adidas jersey reveals regardless, so I'd just fix that if you can.
+Love the removal of orange from the jerseys. I personally think it's an unneeded complication of the color scheme.
+Good choice keeping it simple too, their original edge jerseys were a mess.
-I think the home jersey could use a hem stripe though.
-The hem stripes would look better matching the arm stripes, but...
+I'd say that falls into this point, that this concept is an accurate representation of what I'd imagine them doing, even the three stripes on the side :( .
-Not a big fan of the logo used, looks too dated.
Overall: 8.5/10

Jared L. - New York Islanders
-ADD ID, I'm not sure if these concepts were just sent in all at once or something, but the reminder won't hurt. Even just typing out your name is fine, no need for a logo or any sort of branding like that.
+Not a bad design overall
+The execution has improved a bit, not being very blurry and not being completely obvious that you drew with a brush. still did draw in the stripes with a brush...not a great way to go about it unless you're really accurate with it.
-In reality it's really not much different from what they use now, so it's not very creative at all.
-From the changed you've made, I'd say they're both downgrades. The blue they use now is more vibrant and saturated, which looks better on the ice in my opinion, and the thinner white stripe on the blue jersey isn't as bold or strong as the thick white one.
Overall: 3/10 (this rating mainly comes from the creativity)

Jared L. - New York Rangers
+You have ID on this one.
-As mentioned before, I'd imagine Eric Staal wouldn't be alive in 3237, nor would we, but I suppose that's small potatoes for the concept itself.
+The font is a stereotypically futuristic font, so that fits in a way.
+I see callbacks to the current Rangers design, with some new features. Fair enough for design innovation.
-The stripes on the inside are way too small though.
-It's really hard to tell what hockey jerseys would look like in the future, but this seems too current to be futuristic.
-The photo is very blurry again, and I can barely see the small stripes.
-The fight strap stitching area on the back of the blue jersey should be colored in blue.
Overall: 4/10

Lucas D - Stadium Series
+Solid, simple designs for both teams.
+I like the use of black on the Senators concept, and the red is balanced with it really well.
-Not a huge fan of the font there though.
+Good job getting the number on the Habs jersey to stand out.
+I like the logo choice for the Sens too.
-While this is a concept, and to each their own for concepts since it's our own ideas, the Stadium Series still seems as a more modern thinking game, these designs are to classic for that. Most likely more realistic for the Canadiens though, since they've had essentially the same design for a large chunk of their existence, so this is really something new.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW nomination

Ryan C. - Burlington Cougars
+The Cougars are a Junior A team who (I'm assuming from what I saw) currently use Canucks copies. The fact that this is a new design is already an improvement.
+A simple 2 stripe design like this (or technically 3) often makes a solid design, this is no exception.
+I like the choice of green as the primary dark jersey color, differentiates them from the Nucks.
-The font isn't bad but it looks a bit off too, though I'm not exactly sure what it is about it.
Overall: 8.5/10

Ryan C. - San Jose Sharks
+No matter what, you gotta give Ryan a lot of credit for trying out new things as often as he does.
+I like the initial idea here, the white is almost reminiscent of a tooth, at least in this 2D view of it.
-I think the hem stripe looks a bit out of place, I think filling below it with black would fix that.
-The sock design is a tad odd, it may look better with just 2 straight stripes. I think this still could work though.
~The font is just fine, but I think a less "traditional" one may fit better.
Overall: 8/10

Spencer M. - Team Mexico
+Mexico isn't exactly a hockey superpower, so it's nice to see a concept for them.
+Interesting idea here, it could look great with some grooming.
-The logo would look better as a solid one color M.
-The name and number on the red jersey should be white to give them more contrast, it's a bit hard to see like this.
-White gloves are usually, if not always, something to stay away from.
-I'd stay away from phantom yokes as well.
-The jersey is very plain, it could use, at minimum, some arm striping, and I'd wrap the chest stripe around too.
Overall: 5/10

Spencer M. - Team USA
+A very red, white, and blue set for the US.
+The multitude of stripes is a good feature to call back to the flag, despite the number of said stripes, and the rest of design is simplistic enough to make up for the stripes' business.
-The rest of the design is really just a paint bucket fill job though.
-The name and number should be white on the blue jersey, for better contrast, along with the arm stripes.
-This point also goes for the last concept, there's really no need for two different sets of gloves, especially not if they're the same color like on this concept. The blue jersey's glove design is very odd and most likely wouldn't look too good.
Overall: 5.5/10

Steven M. - Michigan Wolverines
+Solid, simple, and realistic look.
+I like the exclusion of white on the blue jersey, and the colors are balanced great on the white jersey.
-The yellow number outline bleeds into the white a bit though.
-The thin blue stripe on the blue jersey is much too thin.
-Not a fan of the adidas stripes on the sides, but unfortunately that may be realistic.
Overall: 8.5/10

And that's all we have today. I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week.

Wednesday: A Post 23 Years in the Making

Oh my god I'm back again!

And I am finally able to say I was alive to see the Islanders win a playoff series, as I was born merely months after the Islanders sent Jagr packing for the first time. Now I have witnessed the Islanders sending Jagr packing again.

Sort of:

See this is going to be a long story, one that goes beyond hockey. Saturday, April 9th, The Red Bulls had a home match vs. Sporting Kansas City. As a member of the Empire Supporters Club, I also am one of three main drummers in the group. We each take turns on the drum game by game. Except that game, none of us were able to go due to work and travel commitments, so we had to get one random guy to drum. suffice to say things were bad. So well before Game 6 was announced, I committed to being there last Sunday to prevent it from happening again. I was hoping it would be an early game, but of course the NHL sets it for the exact same time. So I was walking to my car from Red Bull Arena after a thrilling 3-2 win over Orlando City when I saw that the Islanders tied it with under a minute to go in the third. And who else but John Tavares to tie it?

I get to my car and I notice that I needed food badly. Overtime had just started, so I went to the Wendy's in Harrison, NJ to get food. One problem: no commercials on radio during the dry scrape. Even if there was one, it wouldn't be long enough to cover running inside and getting food, since the drive-thru was backed up. Once overtime ended, I got food, ate in my car and left for home.

I'm now driving on the Garden State Parkway, and I'm now nervous for two reasons: 2-OT and I'm low on gas. I'm listening intently while trying to make it to the rest stop with enough fuel, when I suddenly hear this.

Then in true soccer fashion, to tie the two sports together, I did the only thing I could've done: My best Andres Cantor impression:

No joke, I was shouting "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLL!!!" In my car for about 10 minutes. Even broke out the Spanish with "¡QUE GOLASO DE JOHN TAVARES!" and "¡LOS ISLEƑOS GANAR!" which translates to "THE AMAZING GOAL OF JOHN TAVARES!" and "THE ISLANDERS WIN!"

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. And we sing in both English and Spanish at the games. So thus the Spanish overflows.

Ok now that this is done, let's pick the Islanders-Tampa series. Or all of them for that matter. Let's start with San Jose and... oh...

Round 2 begins before round 1 is over, as the Islanders and Lightning begin their series the same night as Game 7 between Anaheim and Nashville, with the winner to face San Jose in Round 2. I know you're saying "How the (heck, H-E-Double hockey stick, or f***) are we supposed to negotiate this for the playoff pool. I present to you, an Edit by Ryan!

*** EDIT BY RYAN ***

The 2nd Round of the Playoff will begin on Wednesday...before the 1st Round is complete! This will affect the Playoff Pool and submitting picks. I have determined the fairest way to deal with this is to give everyone two days of Round 2 for free.

Ok so I edited the post to fit the same exact thing he said yesterday. So maybe an edit by Ryan and Phil?

But your problem is now solved! Get your picks ready. Do me a favor and don't change your original thoughts based on how the Islanders-Lightning game goes on Wednesday. Honor system. Just a personal request.

While you're checking that out above, check out the RHI vote! Easy vote, as not many sent in entries. I couldn't due to time constraints and computer troubles, but life gets in the way sometimes. Regardless, these concepts still need votes, so VOTE!

While you're voting, check out our COTW vote. We have it every week, so the only things that change, or at least should change, are the nominated concepts and you not voting. Emphasis on changing the latter.

Alan S: Detroit Red Wings Concept

Not the cleanest Photoshop job to isolate the jerseys. This seems like a team Sweden recolor. But that's not a bad look for the Wings. However, I swear if I see those Adidas stripes on an actual NHL jersey I will lose it. Red wings jerseys have the C on the opposite side of the jersey, because of the end of their logo. Also it should be larger. I'd like to see equipment as well as the back to these jerseys.

Flying solo here: 65%

Connor L: Team North America U-23 (WCH) Concept

I love this so much but I would've done one thing: The way you put XXIII on the sleeves makes it wrap around and say XXIIIXXIII. Put half of it on the sleeve so it looks centered like the sleeve numbers. the Adidas logo on the sleeve looks bad so just ditch it or make it look centered like the numbers.

Well, your score isn't U-23: 70%

Jared L: Boston Bruins Concept

ID like to see some ID on your concepts. OK that joke was dumb. I do like seeing a yellow Bruins jersey, but I would prefer their current logo. The serifs on the B in the current logo improve the look of it. Chest numbers have not been a favorite of mine. I lived with them for about 4 years with the Isles and it was 4 too many. The outer stripes are too thin for my liking, especially since the yellow goes up against the white on the first jersey. I think yellow stripes with black outlines would look fantastic. On the yellow jersey I'd like to see the logo as is and not recolored as you have it,

Best yet IMO: 73%

Jared L: Buffalo Sabres Concept

I think I see what you're doing here. You're trying to merge eras of the red and black with the blue and gold. However, based on the logo you are using, which is too big mind you, red is best used as a trim color. I like the font choice, but again with the front numbers. I know the Sabres have them now, but they shouldn't. Sleeve numbers are also too low. No ID-ea why I keep making bad jokes about not having ID.

A cut below your previous: 52%

Lucas D: Toronto Planets (RHL) Concept

I'm going to review these together.

I think that logo is FANTASTIC. However the outline you have here isn't thick enough to warrant an aqua colored jersey. Purple would probably be better. here. Much better logo than what they originally had. The jersey striping is perfect for the logo. There's really nothing else I can sat about this except for wanting equipment.

Out of this world: 82%

Ryan C: Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL) Concept

I love how the blue on the shoulders form an H on the front. Modern and unique look for the Canes. Absolute brilliance. Execution issues: Where are the pants and gloves? You have half of the equipment here already. There's also no CHL logo on the back hem. I wonder if this look would look great with a modern Hartford Whalers look....

There was no calm before this storm. But that's a good thing: 88%

Ryan C: Sherbrooke Phoenix (QMJHL) Concept

Ditching the shield and the vintage white actually works. It's similar enough to the Toronto Maple Leafs but different enough to establish it's own look. Simple, classic and no complaints other than the same execution issues I mentioned in your Lethbridge concept.

Rising from the ashes: 88%

Spencer M: Team Canada concept

Simple looks and a red jersey that is going places. But it can't go further until you clean up your work. White jersey is a paint-bucket syndrome with a small logo and no sleeve numbers. The red jersey has a different shade of red unnecessarily. The leaves on the shoulders need to be positioned horizontally. No sleeve numbers again. Number is too low as well as too big. Logo is too small. Striping should overlap stitching. Where are the pants? I'd love to see them.

Decent start but far to go: 37%

The winner of my COTW nomination is nobody! We have a tie this week between two concepts by the same artist. So I don't want to nominate an artist with two equally good concepts. So YOU decide.

I hope to see you guys next week. I have some HUGE jersey news that I'm currently working to confirm. All I can say is that one team may be bringing in some heritage jerseys, and I don't mean the Heritage Classic. WHICH TEAM? WHICH THROWBACKS? FIND OUT NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z!!

Tuesday: Volt or Neon Yellow?

Hi everybody. Welcome back to another Tuesday post with your host, me. Round 1 of the playoffs is almost over. I will be looking forward to the Penguins-Capitals match up after the Pens gave the Rangers a shellacking.

*** EDIT BY RYAN ***

The 2nd Round of the Playoff will begin on Wednesday...before the 1st Round is complete! This will affect the Playoff Pool and submitting picks. I have determined the fairest way to deal with this is to give everyone two days of Round 2 for free.

Before I get to the 9 concepts today, I'm going to introduce the newest jersey to the University of Oregon's Club Hockey Team arsenal. This jersey is somewhat unique to the hockey world but fits within the crazy athletic department that is Oregon University. Now, their recent throwback jerseys have gained so much popularity that they had a massive sale and decided to add some of the old with the new. So, without further interruption, I present their newest jersey:

And some actual images of the jersey set:

As you can see by the mockup, actual pictures, and 30 second video, the jersey is another beaut done by Rebirth Sports out in Michigan. I must say that this was really daring of both the Ducks and Rebirth to try and make a Neon Yellow (or volt if you prefer) jersey. Using the duck head logo as the shoulder logos looks awesome recolored in silver, dark green and neon yellow. Also, I feel that if you didn't have that dark green yoke then the jersey would be too much yellow, but this looks like a cool and outrageous design only Oregon can pull off. So, what do you guys think? Did they use neon yellow in a way that looks pleasing on a hockey jersey? Is it a success?  Let your comments known for the Oregon club hockey team in the comments section.(Shout out to you guys back in Oregon).

And for final reminders, we have the ever present COTW vote and voting for the RHI competition.

COTW April 17-23 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
RHI Top 3 vote (ends Friday @ 10:30pm Eastern)
Onto the concepts!
Alan Herbert- Indy Fuel
Positives: The curved stripping goes well with the logo but it also gives the jersey a traditional style to it. The pattern with the arrow heads on the edge of the yoke is a very interesting concept and that little angle you put in the numbers was a good touch to also tie in to the logo.
Negatives: For such detail I would suggest you go with a higher resolution because that could take this concept to a whole new level. Also, I wish you would describe what the arrowhead pattern was for. I'm assuming maybe Native American, similar to the Indianapolis Indians logo design. And get rid of the stitching line within the yoke that divides the shoulder patches from the rest of the yoke.
Overall: 6.5/10

Ben Shaffer- Northern Michigan Wildcats
Positives: Very Traditional design but the stripping design itself looks really good. that stripping at the ends of the yokes really add to this design.
Negatives: Your TV numbers could be bigger and maybe the back numbers as well. The space between the back numbers and nameplate looks to wide.
Overall: 7.5/10

   Jared Lammi- Anaheim Ducks
Positives: The layout is definitely different compared to some of the other concepts we get and I find it pretty interesting. It's almost a European style.
Negatives: No ID on your concept. the TV numbers are off. This is also really small and hard to see and gets grainy when you want to zoom in to see it.
Overall: 6/10

Jared Lammi- Carolina Hurricanes
Positives: The 4-inchers up by the right chest look really good on this and I personally think that's something Carolina could use to improve upon their jerseys. This really gives me a roller hockey jersey feel about it, something that I've always wanted to see NHL teams do (successfully, that is).
Negatives: Same as the other concept.
Overall: 6/10
Lucas Daitchman- National Hockey League
Positives: The green and black waist stripes are really unique. Also, bringing back the vintage all star game logo and turning it into the alternate patch was a good choice.
Negatives: Lucas, I've seen this arm stripping on 4 different designs of yours now and it's getting old. I want you to remember that it's quality that counts on this website not quantity. Other than the arm stripping minimize the green or black. Your design will look cleaner and that accent will make it stand out more.
Overall: 6.5/10

Lucas Daitchman- Quebec Nordiques
Positives: The hem and arm stripe with the Fleur De Lis is a must on any Nordiques concept. The stripping is different and that yoke takes it a lot farther design wise.
Negatives: Not really Seeing a negative with this jersey. Maybe move the TV numbers up a bit and add a blue hem stripe, same as the cuffs?
Overall: 8/10

Matt McElroy- Anaheim Bullfrogs
Positives: The logo you did looks awesome and keeping with the teams original colors and adding in that Ducks orange was a good choice for this. Also, good job on the concept and giving the player inline pants instead of keeping them with the ice hockey pants.
Negatives: As cool as the logo is, you slapped it on the alternate jersey recolored in the Bullfrogs colors. That and this was posted in the RHI competition.
Overall: 8.5/10

Ryan Christensen- Edmonton Oilers Alternate
Positives: Very clever of you to make the oil drop in a waist stripe and add a "EDMONTON" wordmark arched across the chest. Also, the stripping and added oil drops on the sleeves give this jersey a completely new look, unlike anything I've ever seen.
Negatives: I don't think that orange near the yoke and collar has to be so large.
Overall: 9/10 COTW NOMINEE

Ryan Christensen- Philadelphia Flyers
Positives: Like I said on the podcast, I feel that the current set is overrated and they need to go to a much more simple design like this. you decisions on this whole design were good Ryan and it is done very well.
Negatives: The TV numbers look a little small.
Overall: 8.5/10

And that's all I have left for today folks. I hope you enjoyed this marathon of concepts today and, once again, Don't forget to vote. Have a good rest of the week and I'll see you guys this time next week.

Monday: 3 Stars of the First Round

Welcome to another Monday post, here on HJC!!

Well my playoff pool, despite being well picked, wasn't entirely correct. I really thought the Rangers were going to do better, especially with Fleury possibly coming back. I was right about the Sharks, Stars, Caps and Lightning, but those were give ins to me. I was hoping the Panthers were going to show up, but they are a young team with an old goalie and overtime was their death nail. Lu, while always great through 3 periods, was tired by OT. Griess played really well, he has potential to be a starter in the NHL next seasons, but I don't wanna get ahead of myself.

Here are my 3 stars in the Playoffs this far

3. Michael Neuvirth

The guy has SERIOUS potential. The Caps let him go since they had Holtby, but he would be starting there otherwise. Mason is a backup at best and AHL at worst. Neuvirth...the guy stopped 103 of 105 shots he faced against Ovechkin, Backstrom, and the rest of the Caps high scoring line up. Had Neuvirth been in net since the beginning....the Flyers would have more likely to win had their offence shown up. He's the reason they made it this far, he's the reason the Flyers weren't eliminated in 5, and I think even Pens fans have respect for him after the performance he had.

2. John Tavares

I've always been skeptical of Tavares, not because he isn't great, I've just never seen him as elite. These playoffs are certainly chasing my mind on him. His play has gone from being a good point scorer, to also being a leader and mature captain. I think as he ages, Tavares only seems to get better. He's only 25 but right now is playing very similarly to Sakic, except much larger. The Islanders captain is not only scoring goals, but his play is elevating the rest of his team, Nielsen, Okposo and a lot of the playoff newbies are riding high of his success. Watch out, Tampa, I have high hopes now that the Islanders are out of the first round, that they keep going

1. Jamie Benn

Photo from
The series I've watched the most of aside from St. Louis/Chicago has been by far Dallas/Minnesota, and while the Stars offence has had a lot of heroes, Jamie Benn has been near perfect. He's always benefited from having Seguin around, but with such...frankly lacklustre defence and even worse aging Finnish goaltending, he's had to be playing at 125%, and to be fair he has. Without Benn, I will say that Dallas would have lost the series

Any standouts you wanna give recognition. List them below.

Depending on when the Playoffs end, you'll need to get your picks in the next day or at least before the next round begins, so keep an eye out for that

Tri City Americans WHL Concept (By: Lucas D.)

+ I mean, any team with a patriotic theme can pull off this striping, and the Americans are honestly the best fit for this if the Blue Jackets don't do it
+ Good colour balancing except for one thing, but I like how the blue isn't overpowering but is still very visible, Lucas uses JUST enough
+ Good execution, but with some errors that I'd expect Lucas to fix

- The WHL & Reebok logo on the chest are too small and should be farther away from the collar
- I would have gone with all blue numbers, the arms look too red with the red numbers
- The shoulders are really bare, and need something to spice them up. I get not wanting to use the eagle logo, but something would be better than nothing

Rating: 7.5/10

Arizona Coyotes Concepts (By: TG)

+ Right away, colours are balanced perfectly across the jerseys, this fixes the biggest flaw the current set has
+ The logo looks surprisingly good, I get why the Yotes ditched the running logo, but the head was certainly worth keeping
+ The numbers look great, the whole jersey does really well with the desert theme
+ Excellent execution

- The monochrome collar doesn't really work for me, I like the style of the collar on the current jerseys

Rating: 9/10

Providence Bruins Concept (By: Lucas D.)

+ I like the Pruins using yellow over black on their jerseys, and here, the yellow stands out really nicely on the white, something that isn't uncommon
+ Pattern is a good vintage Bruins pattern, but unique to the team and league
+ Good execution

- Shoulder patches seem to off put each other, I would just stick to the Bear logo
- The numbers would look better and stand out better against the yellow stripes if they were black

Rating: 8/10

St. Louis Blues Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ I really like the idea of the Blues using more yellow and white instead of relying on double blue, especially on the yellow numbers
+ The striping on the white jersey is perfect, that isn't to say the blue jersey's doesn't work, but it looks better
+ Good execution

- The shoulder patch is the one thing I'd change. That patch I've grown tired of, it's been around for almost a decade and I think a recoloured trumpet loo is the best thing the Blues can do
- I'd like to see a yellow note attempted, it could fail but if it works, it will really work

Rating: 8.5/10

Calgary Flames Concepts (By: Jared L.)

I mean...It's quite an inventive idea, but the execution falls flat. The image itself is quite small, and a lot of detail is missing.  The numbers are hard to read on the yellow jersey, and the striping pattern...if there is one is two yellow patches on the arm, that's it. The colours are big and bold, but because they aren't really on the arms, the "flames", which with any more details look just like 3 scraggly fingers. There is no logo, and I can barely see the Calgary script in it. It's an ambitious idea..but one that needs A LOT more planning and re thinking, starting with an actual logo/striping pattern

Calgary Flames Concepts (By: Jared L.)

+ I think it's neat to see the '98 Flames with a 2004 colour scheme

- I can appreciate the jersey is hand drawn, but you need to use some sort of basic template or better lay out the jersey, the arms on the red jersey are a blur
- The white jersey is exactly the same as it was in 1998, at least change something
- The numbers are hard to read since they're single layer and squished

Rating: 4/10

Chicago Blackhawks Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ I really dig the white stripes on the black jersey, they compliment the red stripe and stand out nicely, a good dash of 30s for a generally 60s jersey
+ Black jersey is perfect, and the whit jersey is one thing away from being perfect
+ Good logo choices, the logo on the black jersey with the outline looks fantastic
+ Great execution

- The white jersey would benefit from more black in the striping, something as simple as black cuffs

Rating: 9/10

Kingston Frontenacs Concepts (By: Brooks F.)

+ The home and road are a good mix of original and old school Bruins, I really like that
+ Chest stripes really stand out, but don't hide the logos
+ The alternate is perfect, a more interesting version of their original yellow jersey
+ Good execution

- The only thing I can't read are the numbers on the white jersey, Making they white would help them to stand out, or a larger outline of some sort
- The inside of the G on Kingston should be yellow, not white
- Missing CCM logos

Rating: 8.75/10

Kitchener Rangers Concepts (By: Brooks F.)

+ Huge plus for making the soldier's head logo a primary
+ The striping is also a good mix of original and Rangers/Devils, I really like it
+ The alternate is really simple and modern, but still fits with the jerseys, that'd be my favourite jersey
+ Great execution
+ Good job leaving minimal Rangers ties in the logos and jerseys, the Kitchener Rangers need to move away from that ASAP

- The CCM logos are missing on the chest

Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me
