Sunday: Cup Final (TB vs CHI)

Hey everyone! William had a bit of a family emergency he has to deal with so I (Ryan) am covering for him today.

The Lightning will play the Blackhawks in the 2015 Stanley Cup Final. It really should be a good series. I don't foresee a sweep or 5 game domination by either team. I'm excited to see if Stamkos can match Kane and Toews. Does Duncan Keith have the ability to keep playing 30+ minutes a night? Will Tampa counter that by playing Hedman the same amount? Who will make the least mistakes, Bishop or Crawford?

Later tonight, myself and a few of the writers will be recording a HJC Podcast to preview the Stanley Cup Final. We'll try to answer some of these questions and get into who knows what! These things are always lots of fun and we never place any barriers on what to talk about. It should be posted for your enjoyment on Monday night.

By now I hope you've seen the 2016 All-Star Game (Weekend) logo for the event in Nashville. I love it! I think Nashville will truly make this a weekend event, rather than focusing solely on the game. The logo itself uses many of the same elements that the Preds use for their secondary logo, but in no way does this look like a rip-off. The font choice is lovely as are the markings in and around the logo. I've never been to Nashville, but I get a sense of what the city is about from this logo. The logo also gives me an idea of how big they are going to try and make this event. Well done all around!

As always we have the COTW vote going on, so email your vote in. Your Stanley Cup pick is due for the Playoff Pool by Wednesday at 8pm Eastern. Finally, get your logos in for the HJC Open Logo Competition. You have a bit of extra time on this comp.

Northridge Matadors (NCAA) by Daniel L.
This school has a hockey program and they use some simple jerseys. That's not a bad thing, but Daniel does give them some extra life with his concept. I like Daniel's font choice as it goes well with the primary logo. The execution is really great as well. A nice clean concept! A negative in my opinion is that the jerseys are old red Penguins jerseys. Again not bad jerseys, but lets see something new. Or perhaps modifying something other than just the colours would be cool?
Rating: 7.5/10

Columbus Blue Jackets by Andrew W.
Simple jerseys that are nicely done and there's nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't say that these are better than their current sweaters though. I can tell that the white jersey was created first and then coloured blue to make the home sweater. The stitching on the hem of the blue concept gives that away and as such doesn't make any sense. The stitching should encompass just the stripes and not a general area on the jersey. Cleaning things like that up is the difference between good and great concepts.
Rating: 7/10

Halifax Mooseheads by Brandon C.
I'm loving the classic stripes so far in today's post! Brandon demonstrates with this concept how to correct the issues I noted in the previous two concepts. The attention paid to the little details is great! Proper patch placement is wonderful. There's not one patch omitted or out of place. I love that he placed the Reebok jock tag inside the collar and it's the proper one! Those jock tags don't appear in NHL game-issued jerseys, but they do in the AHL and CHL.
Rating: 8/10

Grand Canyon University (NCAA) by Daniel L.
So does this team actually play in the trench? I'm kidding, I'm not that ignorant! Grand Canyon University doesn't have a hockey program. Probably because they're in Arizona and right now Arizona doesn't want hockey! This school has such a great logo, it's a shame that Daniel chose to only use it on the shoulders and back hem. The jersey design is definitely not my favourite. It's very similar to the Avalanche and I've been calling for them to do a complete re-design for a long time. Execution is nice here (except move the NOB down half an inch) but the design of the jersey isn't great.
Rating: 7/10

Carolina Hurricanes by Christian L.
This is a great concept! I'll start with what I don't like. The hem stitching should stop at stripes on all three jerseys. The grey outline of the logo is sharp and dangerous, but the red inside makes it appear to be liquid. Maybe some sort of red soft serve ice cream? I love all of the bold stripes on the home and road jerseys and the colour assignments are excellent. The alternate alone would garner a nomination from me, but the set is fantastic as well!
Rating: 9.5/10

I have to give my COTW nomination to Christian. I think this concept is even better than his Nordiques concept that won Concept of the Year last year!

Now here's your chance to tell me how wrong I am! Do you think I need to get off my fixation with classic striping patterns? Am I too hard on people for execution errors? The comments section is your canvas. Go nuts and lets us know what you think.

I really liked the entries that came in. Everyone was forced by the rules to get creative and you did.

The next HJC Competition starts now. The HJC Open is sneaking up on us and it's one of the biggest events of the year on the blog. Last year Dylan N. won a big championship banner for making it all the way through the tournament. Before I can get any banners made, we need a tournament logo. Check out the OPEN LOGO COMP tab or click the blue banner at the top of the page to read all of the rules. Because this is a logo competition, I have added on a few extra days to complete your work. Everyone is permitted up to three entries!

I've read all of the answers from the HJC Survey. Thank you very much to everyone who provided input. I will take a day or two to put it all together and then I'll let you know about some of the changes that may result.

On Sunday a few of the writers and I will be recording a HJC Podcast to help you get pumped for the Stanley Cup Final. I'm really looking forward to it. These podcasts are always a blast.

Friday: From Hawaii to Switzerland

TGIF, welcome to the Friday post!

Finally, after weeks of speculation, we got the final piece in the AHL relocation puzzle when St. John's IceCaps unveiled their new logo as the Montreal Canadiens' AHL affiliate

Let's take a look.

Photo from St. John's IceCaps' official Twitter

It's exactly what most people expected the IceCaps unveiled. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, the logo itself remains the same, but red dominates instead of double blue. The common criticism of the logo is the double blue had a winter/icecaps look to it, and the red does not have that same affect. I don't disagree, I liked the double blue, but ultimately the double blue was used not for the ice but since it's the Jets two main colours. I still like the logo a lot, not just because I'm biased to any form of Newfie hockey, but it's a solid logo. The map outlines of Newfoundland (right) and Labrador (left) are one of my favourite subtle details in any logo.

What do we get jersey-wise? Just like the Condors & Gulls, we won't know until June. I'd expect a blue version of either of Montreal's jerseys, more likely the white jersey.

Rating: 8/10 (Original: 8.5/10)

In the ECHL, the South Carolina Stingrays made it to the Kelly Cup Finals with a triple overtime 1-0 win over the Toledo Walleye. Pointless tidbit, maybe, but it's not just the NHL having this trend. This is the year of the overtime, and it wouldn't surprise me if over the next two days we get two close, multiple overtime games.

Go Blackhawks and Rangers! (I need to get round right!)

On to the 5 concepts for the day!

Dallas Stars Concept (By: Chase C.)

+ Seeing the current colours on the star hem cut is a neat idea for a concept
+ Lots of black, just like the original
+ Good logo choices, the primary Stars logo would not go well with the star hem

- While it is a good job of doing such a thing, the jersey is from, at least Chase did add a new shoulder patch and get rid of the stitching in the arms and hem, but HJC has a great template page you can go to
- The socks and border of the star don't have enough white, on the jersey the numbers help this problem but the socks don't have this solution
- Gloves lack colours

Rating: 6.5/10

Auburn Tigers NCAA Concepts (By: Daniel L.)

+ While in pro hockey, template jerseys don't work, they really work in college hockey
+ Excellent striping pattern, it's original but still remains in the realm of cookie-cutter, especially those side bars
+ Good colour balancing on the blue jersey, aside from one problem
+ Solid execution, Daniel has improved quite a bit

- Swap the blue and orange on the white jersey to match the AU
- On the blue jersey, swap the orange and white on the numbers and make the NOB white

Rating: 8.75/10

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors NCAA Concepts (By: Daniel L.)

+ Loving the triangle spikes all over the jersey, socks and pants, and even the numbers
+ Dig that yoke shape and angled arms, sort of like the early NHL Whalers
+ Good colour balancing
+ Solid execution, again Daniel continues to improve

- Don't get me wrong, this would look good but, the way the colours are way to similar to North Dakota "Hockey Team Formerly Known as the Fighting Sioux". Not Daniel's fault, but with a team called Rainbow Warriors, some sort of rainbow pattern would add even more uniqueness
- Minor thing but the black yoke on the white jersey would look better if it was green

Rating: 8/10

Ancaster Avalanche Concepts (By: Alan H.)

+ It seems obvious to say this, but as with more junior teams, this is better than what the A-Avs currently wear
+ The jersey doesn't really have a striping battery but a large side pane/underarm mountain range, but hey, it looks good and would be the inverse? of what the Avs wore when they were champs
+ Great execution as Alan usually gives us

- While the colours are balanced well, having maroon numbers instead of blue numbers on the white jersey would match the logo
- The Flyers stitching pattern meeting with the regular stitching looks weird and if this jersey were to be made, it'd more likely be the later.
- Helmet logo

Rating: 8.5/10

Team Suisse/Switzerland IIHF Concept (By: Caz W.)

+ really is something different! This would not be out of place in the 1991 World Juniors
+ That being said, this would work on ice, the Swiss cross body sash is out there but doesn't crowd the jersey or make it look that unappealing
+ The key to any out there jerseys is some simple parts, Caz chose arms and this works perfectly to bring the jersey closer to reality
+ My favourite part of the jersey is the sublimated hem script

- One flaw, the Carolina Hurricanes numbers, they'd look good on a NASCAR or Arturs Irbe's Canes jersey, but on a Swiss's just not Swiss

Rating: 9.25/10 COTW Nom. from me

Throwback Thursday

Hello again guys and welcome back to another Thursday post. As many of you most likely know both of the conference final serieses...seriei...series..I think that's it series, are going to game sevens. I'm hoping for a Bolts/Ducks final. I really don't mind who wins in the west, but being that the Penguins were eliminated by the Rangers 2 years in a row I would rather not see them move on again, but that's just me. Let's move on with the rest of the post now, starting with the reminders. We have 2 votes going on this week, the normal Concept of the Week vote and also the IceCaps competition vote. Along with those we have the HJC survey up at the top of the page,  just leave your answers down in the comments on that page and you can potentially help change how this blog is run, any ideas will be appreciated.

HJC Survey (Click banner at top of page)

For today's post I'm going to try a new rating system, mainly since I have some more time to write the post. I also think this will help for when I sometimes get like a "writers block" and don't really know what to say about a concept initially. I will rate the concepts in a few categories individually:
Creativity: 1 point
Execution: 2 points
Pizazz, wow factor, just something that makes the concept stand out: 1 point
Other areas of the concept, or just the overall look, regardless of the other categories: 6 points
The final score will just be all of these scores added up, which is the most logical way to take this system.

Let's get this started then.

Daniel L. - LA Kings 50th Anniversary
The Kings, along with any other '67 expansion teams that have lasted to this day, will be celebrating 50 years soon. David gives us a jersey to celebrate it with.
Creativity: I haven't seen a concept like this before for LA, and the chrome logos are unique. It still seems a bit simple, but for this category it still gets the point (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution (2/2)
Pizazz: Again the chrome logos come up, and that I've never seen side paneling like that for a Kings concept, but I think that simple look outweighs that here, enough to deduct it somewhat. The yellow really does pop though (0.5/1)
Other areas: I think this concept would look pretty good on the ice overall. Just a few nitpicks I have though. This concept seems to have a more modern approach with the side panels and chrome logos that, with an anniversary jersey, you usually would see a classic approach. I'm not really sure how the chrome logos would translate to a jersey, but if it's intended to be like the stadium series jerseys had it I don't like that look regardless of the modern approach or not. (5/6)

Overall: I know it seemed like I've had some bad things to say about the concept but I really quite like it, I just think it's best fit isn't as an anniversary jersey (8.5/10)

Daniel L. - Long Beach State
So after doing a small bit of research here are a few pics that show what they wear or have worn in the past, not sure which one. I seem to notice a few of them use Bruins templates though.
Creativity: Like I mentioned before with the Bruins, these jerseys seem to borrow heavily from Boston's look, especially with the logo on the dark jersey (0/1)
Execution: Again, solid execution (2/2)
Pizazz: Nothing that really stands out to make this concept special (0/1)
Other areas: Don't mistake my other comments for me saying this jersey looks bad in the slightest. A simple pattern like this almost always works, and this one isn't an exception. While it does lack in creativity, going off of the Bruins' look is a good choice if you want a solid uniform set. I also like the yellow jersey too, gives it a breath of fresh air so to speak of the usual white jersey that would be there (6/6)

Overall: Definitely a good look, just lacking some creativity is all (8/10)

Daryl D. - Toronto Legacy
Daryl brings us a jersey idea for a proposed expansion team for the Toronto suburbs area.
Creativity: This concept is very simple overall, but the striping pattern is unique in a way that at least warrants something for this category, in my opinion. (0.5/1)
Execution: A few notes
-Loose pixels in a few areas, those being the arm stripes and logo
-Logo and name/number on back are off center
-Back name/number are too small
-Lack of TV/arm numbers
-Reebok wordmark logo should be visible on the upper back
Other than that execution is solid but most of those are some crucial areas so I have to give it a (0.5/2) in this category
Pizazz: There isn't really anything that makes this concept stand out (0/1)
Other areas: At it's core this jersey could be passable as an NHL jersey. Of course it would need some touch ups still. Also, the colored nameplate isn't needed for this, and the numbers would look better with an outline. (4/6)

Overall: I think this concept is slightly better than the score reflects, just improve on the areas mentioned (5/10)

Mike S - LA Kings
Mike brings us another Kings concept that looks quite similar to some past jerseys.
Creativity: This concept isn't really creative after all, it's a very simple pattern that looks similar to their jerseys from the 90s, but simplicity is the point of this series so I won't dock too much in this category. Still would be nice to see something a bit more unique though (0.5/1)
Execution: A few small nitpicks
-TV numbers look slightly small
-Shade of black in the logo doesn't match the jerseys
-Helmet/Pants logos should be added
Other than that, execution is solid (1.5/2)
Pizazz: Nothing on this concept that really pops out, no wow factor (0/1)
Other areas: I don't really have much to say that hasn't been said so far. Only thing really is that the pants look really plain, and on this concept they should have some sort of striping (5.5/6)

Overall: Again, I think this concept is better than the score reflects (7.5/10)

Tom V. - Edmonton Oilers
Our last concept of the day is what I am assuming is an alternate for the Oilers.
Creativity: Definitely a creative concept, something you don't see everyday (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution. (2/2)
Pizazz: The yoke outline type of design used here is something that stands for sure (1/1)
Other areas: I really love this concept. My only real complaint is that the jersey looks top heavy, the hem could use something to even that out. The way the current striping pattern is tied into this looks great and gives that connection, and also could be used as the aforementioned thing to balance the jersey. The recolored shoulder patch looks great. The only other thing, which is just personal opinion, is to maybe try the concept in orange, I would like to see the Oilers adopt an orange alternate. (5/6)

Overall: A great looking and unique alternate for the Oilers, this concept gets a (9/10) and my COTW nomination.

Well that's all I have for this post guys. I really liked this new format I used for the reviews, but leave me some feedback and tell me if you liked it and if I should continue with this. Did you like a concept today, or disagree with my reviews? Drop a comment and tell us! I hope you enjoyed this post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you guys next Thursday.

Enough hockey talk, you're not here for that, you're here for concepts...

Fotsvett City Chicken Wings Concept Thing - Bert B.
I don't think I can take this serious. The logo is the best part of this and that's saying something.

Rating: bleh

Toronto Marlies Concept - Joey F.
Joey applies the chest stripe to a jersey for the Marlies. I can't imagine Toronto fans being huge fans of chest stripes. The numbers on the back are huuuuge and I can't tell if the yoke is supposed to be pointed on the shoulders, or if you didn't take the time to try and round it out. The second 0 on the sleeves is unnecessary, just leave the one, no need for it to bleed off of the jersey. The inside of the jersey that you can see in the collar should be blue. Nothing extraordinary here and some execution errors hurt this.

Rating: 5/10

LA Galaxy (MLS) Alternate Kit Hockey Uniform Concept - Daniel L.
It would appear that Daniel brought back the green and yellow scheme from some old uniforms. But he left the red out. I agree this is a better scheme without the red, but the red sure made it interesting. I don't really care for the gradient side panels when there isn't a gradient anywhere else. Feels slapped on to me. Especially since the Adidas arm stripes 'HAVE' to be there the whole thing comes off as basic and templated. I do like the pants striping. If that striping pattern was applied on the sleeves (horizontally), the hem, and the socks, we'd have a slightly more interesting jersey. It's hard for me to see this as an Adidas jersey with the Nike collar. Especially since Adidas owns Reebok/CCM. You think it would resemble Reebok jerseys.

Rating: 6.5/10

Sporting KC Alternate Kit Hockey Uniform Concept - Daniel L.
I can't find too much on Sporting KC using a rainbow kit, but there does seem to be some history there. It's definitely an interesting look. I think you'd be better off with blank pants... the rainbow striping would be too much but the blue stripes seem out of place. The font doesn't really fit the rest of the uniform in my opinion. It's got a modern feel to it, while the uniform itself looks like a throwback. Maybe that's just me.

Rating: 7/10

Manitoba Moose Concept - Chris W.
Chris, like most of us, doesn't want to see the New Moose is Jets jerseys...except for his color swapped alternate jersey, which I'm a fan of. The striping isn't anything new but the big thing here is the Moose font is back. The new M logo is neat, though it'd be cooler if the antlers clower resembled the antlers in the main logo. It should be brighter too, it barely stands out on the navy blue shoulders. Bonus execution points for including the AHL tags and sponsor logo.

Rating: 8/10

Well there you have it! Get strapped in now, We've got some big hockey here in the next few nights!

Also, I don't want my harshness on one of the concepts today to be taken the wrong way. If a concept doesn't appear to have had any time put into it, then I don't really believe it's worth my time critiquing it... what was there to critique?

Good day, love you all. Call your mom.

Tuesday: Tuesday

Today is Tuesday. As you can see by the title of this post. It is Tuesday. Today that is. Everything happens on Tuesday. It's literally the best day. Try to name something that doesn't happen on a Tuesday. I bet you can't. I will trade the Sabres #2 Overall pick this year to anyone who can think of something that does not happen on a Tuesday. Good Luck.

NHL All Star Game Concept - Daniel L.
Let's start off Tuesday with a nice Tuesdayish concept. Right away I can tell I like this jersey. Would it float with a normal team? Maybe, but I think it works perfect as an All-Star jersey. It's nice seeing a concept for this game without the jersey littered with stars. It's nice that you have them on the logo though. It's subtle enough. The jersey design is actually quite tame for an All-Star game but it still looks really cool. I would try to find a way to have the piping connect to something on the striping. Like when the orange piping on the front goes to the back maybe have it connect with the orange hem stripe. Something to give it more of a fluent design. All in all though I really don't have a complaint. I  think it's a sharp design. Especially the gray jersey.

Rating: 9.2/10

Winnipeg Jets Concept - Daniel L.
Daniel's second concept of the day is something I'm immediately a fan of. Why? Because the lighter blue is the dominant of the two. I think the lighter blue is gorgeous on a jersey, especially complimented by silver and dark blue. I like the striping presented too but why not on the hem as well? Then again you might not want to, it's nice character on the arms might not want to overdo it. My one complaint that I'm not sure how to fix is just the blankness. I feel like there should be a yoke color on both jerseys. With the pointed arm striping though it would be hard to come up with a nice yoke design. I think a square one would be fine but still might look awkward. A round one just wouldn't look pleasant. Not sure, maybe something to play around with.

Rating: 8.6/10

Detroit Red Wings Concept - Jamie R.
This is a pretty nice looking jersey. Detroit would be an even better looking team with this in their arsenal. The one and only real complaint I have with this is simply the script doesn't work. First because it's the Detroit Tigers script, but secondly because it's slanting compared to the stable horizontal look of everything else. It makes it a little hard to read with it going against the striping and being the same color of the thick stripe it's on. I always thought THIS script was cool. Would have to straighten it out and what not but it might fit better.

Rating: 8.8/10

Coquitlam Express Concept - Vaughn R.
Another team from the BCHL is done by Vaughn. I like the away jersey. It's simple, it's effective. I would move the number down a tad, and maybe even make the numbers just blck to fit everything else. Or gray to fit the logo. The home jersey is where I draw the line. I'd like to say you made a good call not copying the design of the away. However I think this jersey could have been done better. Maybe for the hem make the middle stripe yellow. And try to incorporate that striping to the sleeve. Maybe have the sleeve just black with the hem striping being the half stripe. Also, TV numbers should be white or yellow on the sleeves. Can't read them at all.

Rating: 7.3/10

Coquitlam Express Alternate - Vaughn R.
This is a nice redesign of the away jersey for the alternate. Kind of goes off and adds red to the mix. I know the team has had the red before so this could be a throwback for all I know. I think it brings a nice Minnesota Wild feel to the set. Not because of the colors or design but to have a matching alternate as one of the jerseys. This does exactly what the yellow jersey should have done, matching numbers with the stripes. Still think it's missing gray in some way. Maybe as a cuff stripe. Just something to bring in the logo.

Rating: 7.7/10

Monday: It's That Time of the Week Again

Hello and welcome, once again, to Monday!

Well, that's it folks! I finally graduated high school meaning that now I have all the time in the world to dedicate to this website and graphic design as a whole. Last week was kind of a mixup, which I completely apologize for. I'm still learning how to use Blogger, so hopefully soon I'll be able to get my grip on this. As you probably know, concepts have been down recently, and I am partly to blame because of it. I have five concepts only a few steps away from being finished sitting on my computer.

Everyone here needs to contribute for this site to run. This site is for you, the fans! If you don't know how to create concepts, take a few minutes out of your day to fill out the survey Ryan has posted. And, as always, we have voting going on for both the IceCaps contest as well as the usual COTW! We've got a Penguins UnderArmour jersey, an old but modern Colorado set, a little somethin somethin from Italy, and an OHL jersey that looks better than some NHL teams!

COTW May 17-23 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
IceCaps Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
HJC Survey (Click banner at top of page)

There isn't much in the way of jersey news. Now that we're moving into the offseason, hopefully we'll see a lot of NHL teams rebranding themselves. I'd even be happy with some AHL teams. Hell, even OHL would be cool.

What teams would you like to see get rebranded this summer? Leave what you think down in the comments below.

Also, since this space is so empty, I feel like I should include something to fill the void, just to have a little "life lesson" section to help you when you need some inspiration. Now that I'm on my one-month of writing for the site, I want to diverge from my fellow writers and do something you can only get on your Monday post from good ol' Jack "The Goose" Godlewski.

So, another thing you should add when you put out your votes for COTW today, what else do you want from the Monday post? I want to do some "slice of life," but only if you want it.

I guess for now I can talk about the playoffs. The Ducks and Hawks seem to be forming a rivalry all thanks to a few childish plays by Corey Perry, so much that Twitter was full of Corey Perry jokes this Saturday. This is bad for me. Incredibly bad. Now I a shamed for wearing my Ducks jersey in public, whereas before no one even paid attention to it. Ah well.

Now, for what most of you came for.

Utica Comets - Ben B.

I'm guessing someone must have been a little late to our last competition.

Pros: I love gray. In any concept with color, it just looks so cool. I can't really see anything you're missing in this concept, all the essentials are here. The blue pants are a great choice, and the hem stripe and arm sleeves are a great idea.

Cons: I'm not a huge fan of the square yoke unless it's done a la the Ranger's away jersey. The TV numbers look a little small and don't pop as much as they should. It seems like there's too much empty space on the bottom of the jersey, maybe if the striping was brought down a bit. I feel as the biggest issue with this jersey is that the numbers on the back don't have enough breathing room, but the TV numbers have too much.

This is a modern concept that doesn't take too many bold choices. 7/10

Ontario Reign - Dylan G.

Next up is an AHL concept for the Ontario Reign, and this seems to look way too much like an old LA Kings jersey.

Pros: I've said it before, but gold and purple are beautiful together. The Ontario Reign logo also looks fantastic in these colors. The arm and hem stripes with subtle silver look great.

Cons: First big issue, sign your work! Even cavemen were found to have signed their work. Do you want to be less than a caveman? The ghost yoke does not work here. Something like that should fit with more creative stripes. It just looks really tacked on here. The logo doesn't pop the way it should, maybe make the main color silver. The shoulder patches also don't work, and you forgot one of them on the back jersey.

This jersey just seems really incomplete to me, like there should be something else. 4/10

New York Rangers - Jamie R.

A vintage look that seems a lot like something we've seen before.

Pros: This seems like the jersey New York should be wearing for their home set. The cream, laces, slightly slanted text, the beautiful striping. If New York doesn't want to make another change like they did in the seventies, at least make this an alternate. I could even see this as a Winter Classic jersey.

Cons: The only issue I have with this concept is the double stripes on the arm. I feel like one would suffice.

This set has everything I love in a jersey. It's close to perfect. 9.5/10 and a COTW Nomination

West Bromwich Albion - Phil B.

Here's another soccer jersey turned hockey sweater by Phil.

Pros: This is a situation where a ghost yoke looks good. The choices of fonts seem really well thought out and the double stroked letters look really good, especially on the white. I have to say, the choice to not include all the colors from the logo is a good one.

Cons: I'm not a huge fan of all the thin stripes. It really isn't copying Albion's style and it doesn't look good on a sweater. Maybe a baseball pinstripe style jersey that's close to Albion's look would be cool here. Also, the pants don't seem to match too well to the pants that exist.

I don't really know how I feel about this concept, to be completely honest. It's fine, but it's not much more. 6.5/10

West Ham United - Phil B.

Phil's second concept of the day, also for a football club. I don't know why, but every time I hear "West Ham," all I can think about is Monty Python and Communism.

Pros: Wow. The color scheme is really something else here. This makes the Mighty Ducks look tame. I love it, don't get me wrong. The V striping is always a plus, and your execution on this jersey is great.

Cons: I feel like you added so much to the jersey, you forgot to add something to the pants. Also the yoke does not look like it fits on the sweater whatsoever.

This just needs some touching up, but it could be a COTW in time. 7/10

That's it for today, folks! Remember, always vote for your favorite concept, check out the survey, and leave your responses to your questions in the comments!

Sunday: Too Tired From All These OTs to Think of a Title

Hey everyone, welcome to another Sunday post!

Has anyone been watching all of the games in the NHL playoffs? If so, like me, you're probably getting to that awesome sleep-deprived state caused by lots of extended hockey games. But there's absolutely nothing in sports more exciting than playoff OT hockey, so it's totally worth it.

If you haven't seen yet, we've put up a survey that you can see by clicking the banner above. In it, we ask important questions that could potentially shape the blog and what direction we go in.  Participation is crucial by our readers and writers (I'll be putting my response in hopefully later today, possibly tomorrow), and it really doesn't take too long to do. All you need to do is click above, answer our questions in the comment section, and huzzah, the blog is a better place because of you.

You know what else doesn't take long to do? Voting! And this week we have two things to vote for. A really competitive COTW vote, and the voting phase for our Ice Caps Redesign competition. Those entries look great by the way, and good luck to everyone who sent in their concepts!

Alright, I think it's just about time for some concepts.

COTW May 17-23 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
IceCaps Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
HJC Survey (Click banner at top of page)
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds - Tyler K.

Yay:  First up is Tyler's Greyhounds alternate. They look good with plain jerseys, but their current alternate is way too plain. The chest stripe really brings out the greyhound logo well, and helps balance out the red and white on the concept. Everything is well sized and well executed.

Nay: The thin hem stripe has no purpose on this jersey. Having a thick hem stripe would look strange with the chest stripe there, so having no hem stripe would be better. The numbers on the back don't have enough red outline, so it doesn't contrast from the stripe enough.

Overall: Not perfect, but a huge improvement. 7.8/10

 Calgary Flames - Ben S.

Yay: Next up is a new Flames alternate by Ben. This looks like it belongs with the Flames' previous jersey set, but with straightened and stylized stripes, the new alternate logo, and horseshoes on the arm. I love the horseshoes, and I like the logo in this style of jersey.

Nay:  I don't really like the chevron arm style, it almost looks like something I'd see on a Senators jersey. If they're supposed to represent wheat, then I can kind of see it, but it still looks more "Senators" than "Flames" to me. The TV numbers need to be bigger.

Overall: A good alternate for a set a decade old, but it still needs some work. 7.9/10

Winnipeg Jets - Brandon C.

Yay: Remember my rant last week on my some teams really don't need a grey jersey? Well, the Jets definitely are an exception. They really need and deserve a grey alternate, and this concept would be perfect. The colours look so sharp on this jersey. The classic stripe style is great and contrasts well with their main design.

Nay: The back number could be just a little bigger, and all of the text should have a blue outline instead of red, or blue and then red.

Overall:  Very nice! The Jets could definitely use this. 8.5/10

San Jose Barracuda - Dylan T.

Yay: Next up is Dylan's newest concept, this time for the Barracuda. The simplified stripes are much better than the ones they went with, which just copies the Sharks' look.

Nay: Other writers have said how his concepts haven't been complete, so I won't go on about it too much. Just add the name, numbers, and TV numbers and then you have a concept we can talk about.

Overall: Incomplete, but I'd like to see this jersey style with a finished concept. 5/10

Swansea City - Phil B.

Yay: Our last two concepts go across the pond to England's Premier League. Phil is like our resident expert in sport crossover concepts, and these two soccer/hockey concepts look great! First, we have Swansea City. The Ducks' style looks great with the Swansea logo, and the arm style gives this jersey a really unique look. The font was a really good choice for this set.

Nay: The logo and hem stripes make this logo look imbalanced on one side, which is hard to prevent while keeping the logo and template.  But here's an idea: why not flip the stripes? So the stripes you see on the back are now on the front, and vice versa. That way, everything looks a little more centered. Just a thought.

Overall: I don't believe Swansea has an ice hockey club. But if they did, and they wore this, they'd be the envy of many teams across the globe. 8.8/10

Tottenham Hotspur - Phil B.

Yay: This next one looks really nice as well. The white jersey is almost like a Maple Leafs jersey, but the arms give it it's own style, and definitely fits with Tottenham's look. The dark jersey with the gradient neon green stripes looks different for hockey, but something we could have seen as NHL All Star Game jerseys last year.

Nay: The white jersey is perfect as is. The black jersey is almost there, but I don't like the piping on the sides of the jersey, and the white logo looks somewhat out of place with the rest of the jersey. It matches their kit, yes, but to me it just looks strange.

Overall: I don't love this as much as the Swansea set, but this still looks awesome! 8.4/10

My COTW nominee this week is an extremely tough call, but I'm going to pick  Phil B's Swansea City concept.

So hopefully you all know your homework to do for today: vote, vote again, and fill our survey. Our blog will be more awesome once you do those things.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week!

The new COTW nominees for May 17-23 have been listed on the side of the page. Click on that banner to see the concepts or go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. After viewing the jerseys, email your vote to HJC before Friday at 11:59pm Eastern. Or you can join the COTW Mailing List and be reminded to vote by email every week. It makes it very easy to vote, as all you have to do is respond to the reminder email. Simply email HJC asking to be placed on the COTW Mailing List.

Here are the final two entries into the St. John IceCaps ReDesign.

Brooks F.

Josh R.

It's now time to vote! This is our typical Top 5 vote. Votes are left on the competition page and are due by 11:59pm Eastern on Friday. A pool of 13 entries to choose from this week. Click the banner at the top of the page to see the entries or you can go to the ICECAPS COMP tab.

If you're a logo designer and you want to get started on the next competition, it will be a comp to design the 2015 HJC Open logo.

In my opinion HJC doesn't work well in its current format. Readers are down, concept submissions are down, posts are late, and things are getting stale. These are only my opinions though. This blog operates because of contributions from everyone.

That's why I have launched the HJC Survey. Click the banner at the top of the page and answer the 12 questions provided. Collectively, the feedback from HJC readers will dictate what kind of changes will be made to the blog, if any at all.
