Choose your Top 5 entries in order of preference and the entry with the most points will win the competition! Voting ends on Friday along with the COTW voting.

The new writer on Tuesday will actually be an old writer. Dylan N. will be returning to the HJC Writing team. This time around there were about four or five people that wrote a good enough mock post that they could have been chosen. Dylan was chosen because I know what he can bring to the table and the transition will be very easy. Good luck Dylan and welcome back!

My 2 and a half year old son is obsessed with my Disney monorail battery operated toy. So if anyone has a few schekels laying around and would like to contribute to getting my family to Disney World, that would be great. The target goal is only $7000. We can do it!!!!!! So maybe that's a little too much to ask for. Then at least you could place your votes this week. C'mon!

Friday: Tropical Domination

Welcome to another Friday post here on HJC!

Jaromir Jagr is a Florida Panther now...That is the only thing I have to say. Nothing greater will come of this trade deadline, it cannot be topped, the Panthers won the season, everyone go home. All jokes aside it is kinda hilarious to think of one of the best stars of the 90's playing for a team that didn't exist until Jagr had been playing for 3 seasons.

Today is the last day to get your Stadium Series Contest entries in, with the deadline being at 11:59pm EST.

Let's look at some of the entries that have come in since last post:

Scott D.

Scott G.

Taylor R.

Kerouac D.

Jarrett T.

Jack G.

Vaughn R.

David P.

Don't forget about COTW! This is the last Friday before the trade deadline, and unless you want your team to pick up David Clarkson from the Blue Jackets for a first round draft pick your favourite team's best young player.

On to the concepts (There are 3 concepts today, but one is a mega multipart)

Dallas Stars Concept (By: Jarrett T.)

+ The Stars in black, while it was a nice break, seems to be inevitably coming back
+ Even though it was such an ugly jersey, the curved arms really did work, glad to see the come back
+ Colours are well balanced, with lots of green and white to keep the jersey from being dark

- The stars on the hem don't work, seeming too 50's minor league for the NHL
- Non-matching shoulder patches don't won't, I would have stuck with the primary logo and put the roundel on the helmet
- The NOB & Numbers are too high on the back and too low on the arms

Bakersfield Condors Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ The re-coloued Condors logo looks fantastic
+ The orange hem on the bottom of the jerseys really work and add something different to what is otherwise and Oilers jersey
+ Good choice using the Oil Drop numbers

- As Ryan said in his post on Tuesday, experiment some more! For a team called the Condors these sure are tame jerseys, it would have been nice to see something bigger
- The white jersey has too much orange to balance well with the blue jersey, but I think the more orange the better

Flint Tropics Concepts (By: Dylan A.)

Flint Michigan was graced with a fake ABA team in the not real 1970's with Will Ferrell, and now that team's name may be used on their recently announced OHL team. This beats the generals by a LONG SHOT! Some people may have a problem with the template jerseys, but this template isn't used in the OHL outside of the Barrie Colts away jersey, and helps show off the team's...less than usual colour scheme

The white jersey looks just as good, with the colours easily balanced and shown off for the world to see. It's a solid set that an OHL team would be blessed to wear on a regular basis

The alternate (hey, a white alternate jersey!) is based on the jerseys from the not real original Tropics. This design would be pretty unique for the OHL, especially the top curves stripe. The back hem stripe is a normal stripe but they match up with the front. Even the name bar looks fantastic!

I haven't commented much on the updated logos...they look fantastic. Taking a basketball script and making it a hockey ready logo is not an easy task, but Dylan has done a very good job. The T would be one of the best secondary logos in hockey period.

And just for fun here is some gear you could buy if you wanted any Tropics swag. My favourites of the gear are the Orange T shirt and inverted teal & white trucker hat.

Overall, this is one of the best concepts I've ever reviewed, I'm not sure how to go about nominating it for COTW though....if I can't nominate the whole thing, they I'll nominate the jerseys (specifically the alternate if I have to pick just one). 10/10 COTW Nomination

That's the post!

Thursday: Swapping Sweaters

Hey everyone, welcome to another Thursday post.

Man, I love this time of year. The time when the landscape of the NHL can change drastically in a matter of a week or less. The time when cup contenders are truly established and bottom feeders stake their claim on the best picks in the draft. The time when your favourite superstar could be wearing another team's jersey in the blink of an eye.

Yes it's Trade Deadline season, and with only a few days remaining, we're sure to see some interesting jersey swaps coming soon. We've already seen a few players get moved, but surely the best is yet to come. My question is, can any new player-jersey combo be more interesting and surprising than Martin Brodeur wearing a Blues jersey this year? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, we have our Stadium Series competition going on this week, as well as our weekly COTW vote. Make sure you get your votes and concepts in by Friday, or maybe your poor showing will get you traded to Buffalo.

COTW Feb 15-21 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Stadium Series entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

If you see this message, I didn't get a chance to put the Stadium Series entries up for today. Maybe I should be the one getting traded to Buffalo :(

Los Angeles Kings Championship Logo - Dallas O.

Yay: We start today not with a jersey concept, but rather a championship logo/banner for the Los Angeles Kings. The shapes of the logos mesh with the shape of the Stanley Cup very nicely, and the overall design seems pretty legit. Interesting work.

Nay: The text doesn't stand out nearly enough. Usually these logos have "2014 Stanley Cup Champions" as the focal point, but here it's barely noticeable compared to the Kings' logos. I don't know if the purple background is meant to be part of the logo (as a banner), or just an image background for display purposes. The small Kings logo inside the bigger logo should have a white outline around it.

Overall: Interesting concept that uses shapes and logos perfectly, but could be better executed. 7.6/10

Los Angeles Kings - David G.

Yay: Keeping with the Kings, next up is David's "new" Kings jersey. I like the arm design, and I think blue, yellow and black would be a very interesting colour combo for the Kings to pursue; it's not like they haven't gone totally crazy with their colours before.

Nay: The logo doesn't need the hexagon shape behind it. If you want to use that shape as a new logo, fine, but make it a new logo.  The hem stripe doesn't work with the roundedness of the arm design. The name font is not realistic for uniforms. There are no TV numbers. The pants and helmet are straight-up ridiculous, and the socks would be much better off without the vertical grey stripe.

Overall:  This is "new" alright, but it needs a lot of work before we could see this hit the ice. 5.5/10

Colorado Eagles - Jarrett T.

Yay: Next up is Jarrett's redesign of the Colorado Eagles, now with 100% more "Colorado" in their current design. Its classy, traditional, and looks great in these colours. Its a very believable and well made set.

Nay: The logo is a different size on both jerseys, and a little too high on the blue jersey.  The TV numbers on the blue jersey should be red or blue, yellow doesn't stand out enough.  The number outline on the blue jersey is a little tough on the eyes, generally putting yellow against white is a bad idea.

Overall: Could be better, but I like this look for the Eagles. 7.8/10

Colorado Eagles - Jarrett T.

Yay: Jarrett also has a 3rd jersey for this set, and it looks lovely. Classic arm stripes, diagonal text, the main and state logos, and again finding a way to use all 3 primary colours without being too hard on the eyes.

Nay: On the arm stripe, if you could find a way to separate the yellow and white stripes, then this concept would be almost COTW worthy.

Overall: Read above, great work. 8.1/10

Team Sweden - Dylan A.

Yay: Next up is a pair of concepts by Dylan, starting with Team Sweden. It walks like a Swedish jersey, talks like a Swedish jersey, and definitely fits in with other Swedish jerseys, but the new chest stripes really give them a fresh, new look that Team Sweden desperately needs. As most always by Dylan's standards, execution is pretty much flawless.

Nay: If the chest stripe was a little lower, the front of the jersey would look more balanced. It would also give the captains patch more room so it can be a little bigger, and also give some breathing space to the event logo.

Overall: Basic, other than the chest stripe, but effective and very sharp. 8.6/10

Team USA - Dylan A.

Yay:  Dylan's 2nd concept today goes to Team USA.  A fairly basic set, but a good classic striping pattern helps with the identity of the team, and really goes well with the logo used here. The star on the shoulders and pants are nice touches, and the colours are well balanced on both jerseys.

Nay:  The logo should be lowered a little bit. I really don't like how big and bulky the numbers look, when a simpler block font would work best with the classic stripes seen here.  The pants would benefit from a stripe, or more design than just an extra star.

Overall: I believe in miracles, and I also believe this concept has potential, but its not quite world-class yet.  8/10

Ontario Reign - Jake88

Yay: Last up for today is Jake's Ontario Reign concept, for their move up to the AHL. They really disappointed me when they unveiled their new look, even though I like the classic Kings logo, just throwing it on the current Kings jersey is just lazy. I liked the Reign's logo anyway, and it looks even better in these colours. And the concept looks better with these traditional stripes rather than the Kings' design.

Nay: Not sure what's going on with the pants, adding the white-grey-white stripe onto the pants would be perfect. I also don't get why the old Kings logo is on the pants. The new Kings logo should be on one of the shoulders, since they are the affiliate team.

Overall: Not the most exciting design, but much better than the design they chose to go with. 8.3/10

I often praise simplicity, but it's hard to give simple looking concepts great scores as opposed to more creative designs.  However, Dylan A's Team Sweden the perfect mix of old standards and new design, and is extremely well executed, so today I'll give that concept my COTW nomination.

That wraps things up for another week. As always thanks for reading, and have a good Trade Deadline Weekend!

Wednesday: You've got mail!

So today... there was a package in the mail. I instantly knew what it was...

I guess you could say this is the stanley cup of concept making, so it feels pretty cool to win! Thanks again to everyone who vote but a big thanks goes out to Ryan for this cool prize and for spending all his time to make this blog the best. Yes, like colin pointed out, the logo is slightly off centre but my O.c.d will have to deal with it. Nonetheless really cool. Thanks again.

Lets check out some of the SS entries we have received:

COTW Feb 15-21 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Stadium Series entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Now onto regular concepts:

Coby S North VS South Carolina

Coby pits One state vs another. He get's inspired by the state flags and creates two awesome jerseys. They're both literal representations of the flags, so I'm going to have to take some points off for that. Being inspired by the flags but creating something of your own would be even cooler. good execution though. Keep it up, (7/10)

Dylan A - Team Canada

This was one of my favourite entries in the world cup of hockey competition. No useless black, just red and white just the way I like it. The logo is sharp, looks old but still modern enough to work. Striping fits perfectly with the logo. The extended yoke with the off colour NOB is fantastic. Overall: I don't see any real flaws with this set. Good job! (9/10)

Dylan A - World Stars

Dylan gets creative here and creates a good looking set for the World stars. I like the colour scheme here, it's vibrant and still represents the team well. (You know.. Earth, water..). I like the template-y feeling here.. it's totally something reebok would create, but this actually looks good. I'm not sold on the main crest, but since you created it I won't take off any points. Lastly, the subtly touches like the font and shoulder patches are amazing. Once again, high five. (9/10)

Eric T - Cape Breton University

Cape Breton actually has a cool identity going on here. The colour scheme is really vibrant, and the logos look pretty fierce. I really like the plaid pattern but it looks odd at the hem, especially since the light jersey doesn't have it, so what if you moved it the the yoke instead. I think it would really take this concept up a notch. Near perfect! (7.5/10)

Josiah B - Colorado Avalanche

I didn't think vintage white would look good with the blue and maroon but it really does. The main issue I see with this jersey is colour. The blue jersey doesn't have enough maroon, and the little maroon that it has doesn't stand out well against the blue. And there is wayyy too much vintage white on the light jersey. get rid of the pants and gloves. Overall: It could make an interesting alternate with a few tweaks. (6.5/10)

Nathan B - Colorado Vs Detroit

Nathan Takes all the NHL stadium series gimmicks (and actually takes them further) and creates a set for the Colorado Detroit SS Game. I like the overall modern feel of the jerseys, and execution is top notch, but there's a lot of metallic in these jerseys. I didn't like the chrome logos, So the chrome stripes don't do it for me. The Avalanche logo is also not chrome-ified. I also don't like the logo choice for the Detroit jersey, stick to the classic wheel logo. Overall: 7/10

Ryan C - Minnesota Wild

Ryan Gives the Wild a new matching set! Colours are spot on, it doesn't look like christmas at all. I also like the logo choice, probably one of my favourites in the NHL, I don't know why the Wild have it in a roundel. I also prefer the Wild in green. A few complaints would be the shoulder patch... that logo is a little outdated. Finally I like the wild in classic striping but this is a bit to classic for me. Overall: 8/10

That's the post folks. Have a great week!

Tuesday: UConn Find Two Ryans Here

It's me Ryan and I'm back here again. By this time next week the new writer should be gracing your with their opinions and wisdom. Until then, sit tight and bare with me. We had 11 applications, which is great. For the 10 of you that don't get chosen please don't let it discourage you from applying next time. Whenever a spot opens up there is usually more than one applicant who could take the position, but I typically only take on one at a time.

What did everyone think about the Stadium Series game?
From my perspective it felt like there wasn't much buzz around the game until Saturday. Then it felt like everyone realized it was here and it was a big deal. I also thought that the field looked empty and unfinished. The NHL usually does a good job dressing up whatever stadium their big event occur in, but the actual field on this one looked like crap. LA's uniforms turned out to be a disaster and San Jose's went over about as well as could be expected.

Here's your chance to show us what you would like a Stadium Series game to look like. HJC is holding a competition that allows you to design your very own Stadium Series game. The rules and requirements are very simple, so head over to the STADIUM SERIES tab (or click the banner above) to read them.

Lets take a look at the entries that have come in recently...

Here are the voting reminders, as well as a kick in the butt because Stadium Series entries are due at the end of the week.

Evansville Icemen (by Ryan C.)
Ryan is taking the natural steps in the evolution of a concept artist. He started out using the Athletic Knit jersey creator and when he had reached that software limitations he moved ahead with one of our current templates. Well done Ryan and keep trying to evolve. That should be said to everyone. Don't be afraid of new templates, don't be afraid to fail, and always try to be better. I really like how Ryan has utilized Evansville's colours here. The blue jersey looks especially good. The classic striping pattern looks great and the slight alteration to a classic block font for the player numbers was a great choice. The NOB looks too small, as such I would suggest using a bit bigger font. What pushes concepts over the top is attention to details. I would like to see some ECHL branding on the concepts as well as team sponsor(s) on the jersey. There are also some loose pixels around the template which become quite clear when the two layers of the blue jersey are on top of each other.

Je'Daii Order - Star Wars (by Ryan G.)
Wookieepedia can tell you all about the Je'daii order. If it didn't exist in Episodes I-VI, then it didn't exist in my Star Wars world. I could write forever about my dislike for all this extra curricular Star Wars junk, but I will stick to the jersey. Based on what Wookieepedia says, I would liked to have seen some sort of "balance" of good and evil in this jersey. Purple and white doesn't really say that to me. There's nothing bad about the double purple design of the jersey, but at the same time you could throw any purple Star Wars logo on here and it would have the same effect.

Jedi 3rd jersey (by Ryan G.)
Nice looking jersey, but this concept suffers the same fate as the above concept. What makes this a Jedi jersey other than the logo? Could I throw any yellow logo on here? Probably. It's nicely executed except that it still has the NHL/Reebok tag inside the collar. The Jedi never had a team in the NHL and it looks like a jersey manufacturer from the Galactic Empire made this jersey and left their wordmark on the back neck of the jersey.

University of Connecticut (by Daivd P.)
UConn revealed some fairly uninspiring new designs for their 2015 jerseys last month. That prompted this and the following concepts. David does the right thing and uses the husky as the primary logo. I have really soured on roundel logos, but this one doesn't bother me. I don't like the idea of two alternates for a university team, but I'm not dumb enough to think that it will actually be the case. Because of this template and because we don't get to see the backs of the concepts it's hard to tell what's so different and/or great about the font chosen for the player numbers.

University of Connecticut (by Josiah B.)
Everyone likely knows that I like classic jersey designs, so as you have guessed I do like this jersey. My favourite part is the double outline on the square yokes. There are some execution issues that set this otherwise very good concept back. Unless UConn uses very cheap fully sublimated jerseys all jersey stripes should go over top of the jersey stitching. The hem stripes are also a little low because they run into the hem trim. Just move them up above the hem trim. The stripes on the socks are all different thicknesses than the ones on the jerseys, which are all consistent. The TV numbers seem quite high and quite small. They also don't have an outline like the player numbers do. This isn't necessary, but the jersey does look odd as it is. Finally the template box directing the artist where to place the player numbers has been left on both jerseys. Please guys, triple check your work before emailing it in.

Finland (by Dylan A.)
Artists that get frustrated by the writers' comments of execution errors can always look to someone like Dylan as a great example of how things can be done. And it's NOT just because he works with vector images. There are no loose pixels, stripe thickness is consistent when it needs to be, colours are proper and consistent, and everything looks properly proportioned. I could go on for a while. I like the white jersey except for the vertical chest stripe that stops at the stitching, which I don't think really needs to be there. I also don't think the coloured namebar was necessary. The blue jersey is excellent. I really like the dark stripe behind SUOMI. My only gripe would be the Finnish flag, which looks thrown into the hem stripe simply as a way to get the flag on the jersey somehow.
9/10 - COTW nomination from me!

Are you going to second my nomination? Does someone else deserve to be nominated? You better get on that because they'll need to be seconded as well. I also challenge someone to have the guts to tell us your least favourite jersey of the bunch and in a constructive way tell us how you would improve it. See everyone on Saturday.
