Edit by Ryan (11pm Eastern)

How was Halloween for all you little trick-or-treaters? This post was not complete due to my son & daughter going out to get some candy. Oh and my daughter is teething so she doesn’t feel like sleeping these past few nights.

My love for Caramel Chews stems from Halloween and my birthday being the next day. It seems lots of kids don’t like those chews, so inevitably I would get a whole bunch of them as birthday candy from friends. It was awesome!

Here are the entries for the Rewrite History: 1996 World Cup Competition...

The winner of the COTW vote for Oct 18-24 was Taylor R’s Winter Classic concept.

Full Results
Taylor R. (WC) – 17
Brooks F. – 5
Taylor R. (NYK) – 4
Duncan L. – 2

Taylor’s guess for the Bruins jersey was nearly 100% accurate and I suggest that it will be a similar situation with his Canadiens guess.

The new COTW nominees for the week of October 25-31 have been listed on the side of the page in the black poll. You can click the link in the poll or go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK page to see the nominated concepts. This is the final COTW vote for October. Voting ends on Friday at 11:59pm Eastern.

Friday: I Can Show You The World

Hello hello hello folks!

Today is once again Friday, and that means that I'm gonna be talking about all the crazy stuff that's been happening in jersey news lately.

Such as...

Okay, first I have to give kudos to Taylor Roy for predicting this design almost to a tee. The only major difference is the thickness of the stripes and the placement of the numbers. Great work, man!

This is what the Boston Bruins will be wearing during this year's Winter Classic! It's based on the jersey used in the original season in Boston. The two can be seen side by side. A few interesting notes. The arm stripes are much lower on the new jersey than the old one. Interesting idea. Second, the collar on the new one is closer to that of an actual sweater. More a wool crewneck. I wish they would've done the whole turtleneck thing, but oh well. Beggars can't be choosers. And probably the most obvious thing you may have noticed, it's black! This could lead to some very interesting speculation. Either the Canadiens are using something a little more original, or the Bruins wanted to go along with their more recent color scheme. Whatever the case, I like how they drew back so far for this jersey. Although I think I would've preferred the brown... but that's probably just me.

I'm gonna give this one a 7.75/10. What do you guys think? Let me know down in the comments!

That's right! Voting season is still in full swing!

Plus you have the ability to literally rewrite history! Do you know how neat that is?

Get those entries in by next week Wednesday. As always, the rules to the competition are at the top of the page! Have fun and keep on designing!

COTW Oct. 18-24 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
REWRITE HISTORY- Entry Phase (ends Wednesday Nov. 4th @ 9:59pm EST

Here's the second entry in the logo contest! Today's theme is going to be about animals. Big scary predators. We've got wolves, tigers and bears! Oh my! I know I should've waited to do lions, but hey. Ya live and ya learn. Who will win this week? You decide!

Chicago Wolves
The extra realistic Chicago Wolves logo, that for some reason decided to discard its physical body for a hockey stick and what I can only assume is a very black cheese wheel. Don't tell me it's a puck. We all know pucks don't get that big. This was one of my favorite teams growing up, and that was mostly because of how fierce this thing looked!

Sudbury Wolves
This logo is just so incredibly filled with charm. It almost seems straight out of an old 50's cartoon about the big bad wolf. It's probably the most bloody and violent logo out there, and most importantly no one has ever done anything like it. It's the perfect blend of spirit and history, along with fear and gore.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers
This team recently changed to their affiliates' color scheme of blue and orange. The severed head of this cartoony tiger looks like it's flying right to the victim's throat, which we can only assume is the goal. It's the somewhat minimalistic style that works so well here.

Amur Khabarovsk
This tiger definitely goes for the plainer look. It does trade black for blue like Bridgeport, but in a much darker and intimidating shade. This more realistic head staring straight on does have less character, but it pierces the souls of any that fear to face it!

Hershey Bears

This team's name actually started as a bad pun about Hershey bars, but they still carry the identity of a strong Kodiak ready to play some hockey! The brown and cream are a more realistic color scheme that make the logo that much stronger.

 Charlotte Checkers

The final team of the day is the Charlotte Checkers, in the same league as Hershey, and not too far away from it either. While the checkerboard pattern and goofy Chuck E Cheese-esque bear character is gone, this team's logo has traded these old cartoony ideas for a more realistic polar bear. Which makes you think that a literal real actual polar bear wants to run out of its home and check you out on the ice. Absolutely horrifying.

That's it for today's contest! It's up to you guys to vote who wins this week!

Last weeks winners:

Orlando Solar Bears vs. Colorado Eagles: Orlando
Manchester Monarchs vs. Reading Royals: Manchester
Fort Wayne Komets vs. Indy Fuel: Fort Wayne

Dylan T - Instagram (Social Media Series)

Execution: A tiny little detail in the color, it looks like it's a little screwed up on the right side. Everything else looks good! (95%)
Striping: So I can see you wanted to use the rainbow striping from the corner of the logo. It makes good sense to do so. I do personally think it should have been thicker, and maybe some tan or brown was thrown in elsewhere to break it up a little. (80%)
Creativity: The concept overall is creative, that of using social media logos, but this jersey is as old as time. (75%)
Effectiveness: I can't really picture this appearing in stores any time soon. (0%)
Other: A few things. Numbers do look a little strange here. I understand the stylistic choice, but every number looks better with a stroke, especially if it's laying across a bunch of bright pastel colors. Second, the font overall is just a little too strange. (60%)

Overall: This is another case where the base you have is great, but it can be expanded and improved on so much more. (66.5%)

Jan S - Washington Capitals

Execution: The stitching bleeds through past the stripe. Everything else looks great! (80%)
Striping: Really cool! I never expected the old blue and brass Caps would look so good in red and navy! (90%)
Creativity: It isn't the most creative idea I've ever seen, but hell if it isn't a cool idea. (90%)
Effectiveness: I'd make THIS the alternate in a heartbeat. (100%)
Other: I think a few things to note. Pant, sock stripes, you did a killer job. The numbers would look a lot cooler if you could angle them along the bottom stripe. If you need an idea, I know you can easily find an old Philly Blazers concept by CPM to see what I mean. Regardless, you did a great job here overall. (85%)

Overall: Transitioning an old striping pattern that I love into a color scheme that I love more always equals good boy points from Jack. (88.5%)

Ryan C - Montreal Canadiens

Execution: The image looks a little blurry, and some fine white spots under the pits do stick out on closer inspection. These are minute though. (95%)
Striping: One thing I love is when a white jersey has a yoke but a colored doesn't. You would be amazed how simple and beautiful of a detail that is. The rest of the striping is nice. I wouldn't have outlined the white stripes in navy, as it does make the color balance a little heavier. You could soften it up and have a much prettier jersey by just having the white. Either that, or maybe connect the arm stripe to the navy block, as it will make it more seamless. (90%)
Creativity: It's very simple in the most elegant way. I've seen similar stuff, but I gotta give points. (90%)
Effectiveness: I think if you tore the Adidas logo off, slapped on a Reebok one, and handed these to the Habs for next season, I would not be complaining. (100%)
Other: I don't think there's much else here. Every other detail is solid. That's some good design. (100%)

Overall: Montreal always lets stripes do the talking. This reflects here as well. (94.5%) and a COTW nom from me

Ryan C - Nashville Predators

Execution: Some minute things here. The stitching seems to have  a tiny nub down towards the bottom, and above the striping there's a gap from where it touches the stripes. (85%)
Striping: Great work. I love diagonal lines in jerseys. They are always much more exciting. The pattern is great, simple, and not a piece is lost. (95%)
Creativity: Definitely something I haven't seen for the Preds. (95%)
Effectiveness: I do like the Preds normal jerseys now, but I think in an alternate universe, I would settle for this. (100%)
Other: I think that it was smart not going for the six stringed numbers. The jersey is way too simplistic for something like that. The shoulder patch is really well highlighted here as well. I would've created a larger stroke on the arm numbers, and would have also made the inner flap blue. (90%)

Overall: Something that sheds Nashville in a much more subtle and simplistic light. (93%)

Taylor R - HC Kosice (SM Extraliiga)

Execution: Stellar (100%)
Striping: It's superb. The slight touch of gray does get a little lost, but the arm still just pops so well. And I do have to say, that thing I talked about earlier with the yokes? Double for what you've done here. Colored arm patterns are some of my absolute favorites, and the fact that both jerseys have that tie, it's just one of this "ugh" kind of things. (95%)
Creativity: Gotta give you extra points for that whole arm thing. (95%)
Effectiveness: I'd buy that jersey for a dollar. Maybe more. Probably more than that. (100%)
Other: Great stuff here. The addition of gray is slight, but it still works well here. I would've preferred it where it really shined. The numbers and names pop, the logo is well framed, the league logo is well hidden by the color scheme. (90%)

Overall: Another great jersey. (94.5%)

Well, that's it for today folks! A lot of great concepts today, just like any other day. Now it's up to you guys to decide.

Like any jersey a lot? Write about it in the comments! Think one is so good, that it could be considered for the jersey of the year? Write about it in the comments! Want to contest my opinion? Write about it in the comments!

Thursday: CWHL & Red Out

Hello again all, and welcome back for more HJCing n' stuff.

So recently I noticed that the CWHL has had a major redesign (hence the title), revamping 60% of the teams logo wise and 80% jersey wise. The only team that remained completely untouched was the Boston Blades, who still need improvement for sure. The only other team that was somewhat untouched was the Calgary Inferno, who left their logo the same, and a good decision as they already have a solid logo. Each team copies the NHL team's jersey design from their city, aside from Brampton as they're without an NHL team, and that hasn't changed. Ignoring that, let's go over the changes: (All photos from the respective teams)(Old designs on left, new on right)

Toronto Furies

As will be the theme here this is a great improvement. The old logo was too simple and vague, but also had a terrible gradient inside it. The new logo isn't anything amazing, but it combines the T and F from their name to create a still simple, but this time less vague and meaningless logo. They also add a leaf for good measure to reference the Maple Leafs of course.

As will also be the common theme here, the jerseys are a vast improvement, even if it's only in one area. Prior to this year every CWHL jersey was just their city's NHL team copy (except Brampton) with a script and number as the crest, and as of this year they actually have their logos as the crest. That will 95% of the time improve the jersey, and it does here in this league for sure.

Brampton Thunder

Well in this case here the logo is an improvement, it would be pretty easy to make a logo better than their old ones, but this new logo is still nothing great. It's very cluttered and still looks amateurish, and for the most part it doesn't even match with the jersey, which I'll get to now:

So their jerseys went from Sens copies with a script to Kings copies with their logo, which is probably the best improvement overall since they actually changed more on their jerseys than just the logo, which if you know me or most other jersey nerds, is a great thing since the Sens template is known as terrible, and for good reason. The Kings template isn't the best and again doesn't match the logo too well but it's still a great improvement.

Montreal Stars Canadiennes
The previous logo, at least in my opinion, made no sense aside from the star (if anyone knows what the two triangles/peaks mean then please enlighten me), but now I think they have the best logo, if not a tie for the best. The logo reminds me of the Habs, which is what they were going for, but it isn't too much of a copy and it has it's own flavor to it. It's simple and sweet, great design.

As for the uniforms, they're, again, copies from the Habs. Ignoring that, these are some classy looking uniforms and look much better with the new logo.

Calgary Inferno
Now the only change the Inferno have gotten to their look is that the logo is now front and center on the uniform, just how it should be. It looks so much better than the script across the chest, and it's a great logo too. Just like Montreal, they add some flavor from their local NHL, with the flames from the Flames logo being the hair for the Inferno. This logo is much more modern, but depending on your preferences (modern vs. classic) I would personally think either them or the Canadiennes have the best logo in the league.

Overall the league had a pretty major logo revamp and along with that the jerseys changed at least slightly, and I think that brought them to looking mediocre ,if not worse, to a professional level now, all that really really needs fixed (logo wise at least) now is Boston.
So this week we go back to the future past to design the uniforms for the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, but with today's technology available. We also have the never changing and vital COTW vote, which is quite simple to do, so go leave your votes.

REWRITE HISTORY- Entry Phase (ends Wednesday Nov. 4th @ 9:59pm EST
We have one contest entry for today, from Matt G.

And the moment you've all been waiting for...the concepts!

Dylan T. - YouTube
+Simple design which is what I'd imagine happening if the Social Media Hockey League was a thing
+Good emphasis on red and white, which is what I'd consider YouTube's main colors
-There is not enough black to match their colors however, and they also do not have a second red color, so that doesn't fit in the concept
-The font, even if it's YouTube's main font, doesn't fit on a hockey jersey. If it is their main font it's at least justified though, just like the Twitter concept from a few days ago

Overall: Not terrible, not great, but a few touch ups would really help (6/10)

Ryan C. - Carolina Hurricanes
+Keeps it simple with the design, which can rarely result in a bad look
+The colors are balanced well
+Really like the font you chose for this
+This is only a small detail, but good job adding the TV numbers underneath the top jersey. Some people wouldn't have done that and it just shows attention to detail
-The NHL logo should technically be on the collar insert, but maybe your concept has Adidas removing it. I dunno
-The shoulders on the jerseys are empty, add a shoulder patch
-Of course this isn't a requirement, but it would be nice to see the warning flag pattern

Overall: I'd say it improves on what they have now (8/10)

Jan S. - Carolina Hurricanes
+Just like last concept, it's pretty least for the most part
+The logo choice is good, especially for what I'm assuming is an alternate
+Also, good job utilizing the third color for the alternate
+Good job trying to bring back the warning flag pattern (I think that's what you're doing) buttttt...
-It's more of a checkerboard, so it gives off more of a checkerboard feel
-The numbers should be white to stand out more
-Not sure what's going on with the pants but the outlines are very bright and pixelated
-The sock stripes are way too high and the helmet should have numbers on the front of it with that template

Overall: Execution needs work, but it's a good start (7/10)

Taylor R. - HK Dukla Trencin
+Not sure if this was your decision or if they already used it, but the color scheme looks great
+Another simple design, but this one also has some extra flair and uniqueness to it
+The yellow yoke looks beautiful
+Good execution, as usual from Taylor
-The logo could use improvement, but I won't retract from your score because of it
-Sometimes it works but in this case it doesn't - the yellow on the white jersey blends in too much and can begin to hurt your eyes. Either darkening the yellow or surrounding it in red would help.

Overall: Great, classy set (9/10) and my COTW nomination

This post is already late so keeping this short. I hope you guys enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week.

Spooky Wednesday

OoooOoooOooOhhhh Happy Halloween Week HJC'rs! Hope you're all having a spooky week, and especially a spooky hump day...

I wanted to post something that would give you all a good scare, but I just can't do it... it's too vile and evil...

Ok fine, I'll hide it through a link...

Good luck sleeping to those who clicked the link...

Maybe voting and submitting contest entries will help you cope with what you saw...

We have a few entries for today... so ... here you go...

Lucas D.

Jared L.

And now, your spooky Wednesday concepts OOOOooooOOOoooOoOOOOOOHhHhHhhhh!!!!!

Facebook Jersey Concept - Social Media Hockey League
Interesting idea for a league, but I'm not seeing this as super believable. The blue bar in the main logo shouldn't be there. It's clunky and also I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed through Facebook's brand guidelines. The name and number font looks too large and clunky as well. The striping pattern on the sleeves is too large and clunky to me as well. I see a facebook jersey as mostly blue with some very simplistic and sparsely used white stripes. Same goes for the socks.

Rating: 5/10

St. Louis Blues Alternate Jersey Concept - Jan S.
Very close to their actual alternate jersey, but with more yellow. I like it. Maybe it's just me, but the yellow hem stripes look slightly thinner than the arm stripes. The yellow outline on the yoke is unnecessary, so that could go. The sock striping and pants striping should all match the jersey striping, that's the best striping in the whole uniform. The Blues' logos on the shoulder are the wrong blue. The whole jersey, and the logo inside the roundel is navy, but for some reason the shoulder logos are royal. Either make the chest logo royal or make the shoulder logos navy. Also, there's some random royal blue inside of the collar of the jersey.

Rating: 7/10

Florida Panthers Concept - Zeke G.
I love the name Zeke. Dope... These jerseys seem very reminiscent of the team's first jerseys. I think the striping should be slightly thicker and the sleeve stripes should be slanted. I think it'd look good with the angled side panels. I think the sleeve stripes also starts too high up the sleeve, but if you thickened the stripes that would make it better. Also, the white jersey is too blue. There was a time when the Panthers went away from a red jersey and focused on blue and they went back to red because people wanted it and it just looks good on them. So definitely find a way to work more red into the white jersey.

Rating: 7/10

St. Louis Blues Concept - Ryan C.
Ryan has been putting together some good looking jerseys, and individually they're pretty good. But as a series, they're all the same. Hem stripes and angled sleeve striping. I get it. It looks really good, but if the whole league did it, it'd be boring. So some uniqueness between teams would be good. The only thing I'd change here is give the white jersey blue numbers and the blue jersey yellow numbers.

Rating: 7.5/10

HK 36 Skalica (Slovak Extraliga) - Taylor R.
It's really hard to do red and green without making the jersey look like Christmas. The gold kind of makes it Christmas-y, but the black seems to cancel that out. I'd say add slightly more black to avoid elf jerseys. The striping is nice and the green jersey looks good as it is. Now, with the white jersey, I like the green hem and cuffs, but I don't like the red yoke. I think that jersey would look best without the yoke, but that's just me.

Tuesday: Halloweek

Hello everybody! A new day and a new week has started! How is everyone doing lately? For the ones that have their career already, for the ones in school, hope you're doing great. Today we finish off one of the league's logo tournaments with a great matchup. For all that have voted so far, thank you! For the ones that haven't make sure you be apart of possibly the greatest sporting event ever!

We have a COTW vote going on too at the side of the page. That takes half of a second to do, so there is no excuse for that. We also have the new Rewrite History competition. Right now you have to remake the 1996 World Cup of Hockey Logo. Good luck to all in voting or submitting entries this week!

(Oshawa 8-2 over Kingston - - SOO 4-3-3 over London and Hamilton)

There it is, the final matchup for this league. Winner will advance to the Tournament final which will be roughly 6 months from now if we continue at this pace, but hey, it gets us doing something on posts!

COTW Oct. 18-24 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
REWRITE HISTORY- Entry Phase (ends Wednesday Nov. 4th @ 9:59pm EST

Twitter Jersey Concept - Dylan T
I would expect this to be Twitter's hockey team jersey if they have had a social media hockey tournament. Dylan uses Arial I believe which is Twitter's main font. That or Helvetica Neue. On a sports jersey the font does not look good at all, but I understand why it's used. I think if you want to go in a more eye pleasing font you go with a block number font for aesthetic. If you want to bring in the whole theme of the site though, I would say this is an ok font choice. Just doesn't please my eye on a uniform. The rest of the uniform very simple and basic. I would assume Facebook's would be similar but a darker shade of blue. I think having the hem being just a stripe would look better though.

Rating: 7.8/10

Buffalo Sabres Concept - Jan S.
Jan gives the Sabres a new third jersey. The primary logo used is the old shoulder patches during the slug days. To me, that type of logo should stay secondary. Even though it's the only Sabres logo of all time that actually makes sense to the team name. The striping and consistency of the design is all over the place though. I would prefer you take the arm striping and move that to the hem. The hem with that striping could potentially look great. The sock desig you have really throws me for a loop. It shares not design elements with the rest of uniform, so that definitely needs changing from my perspective. Make those changes and I think you could be on to a decent third jersey.

Rating: 7.5/10

Minnesota Magicians Concept - Michael L.
Looking on Google, no jersey the Magicians have ever worn is memorable or even the slightest good looking. I think Michael drops the ball here by using a cookie cutter reebok template. I don't really see any true identity here. I think the gray jersey with black and red color scheme would look great but I think you need to go through more process of how to give them their own identity, or take the identity of the name 'Magicians' and show that in a jersey. Execution all around looks nice though. Just would want you to explore more options.

Rating: 7.7/10

Edmonton Oilers Concept - Ryan C.
Ryan looks at the new Oilers alternates and says orange should be the primary color. And by the way the concepts looks maybe I wouldn't be against it. The real negative when doing Oilers concepts is that I think you need some type of shoulder design or some logo there (in in their case, shoulder numbers). To me when there is an Oilers concept without anything on the shoulders it feels very empty, and that's the vibe I'm getting here. Striping is simple and reminds me a lot of the Islanders. They'd get a lot of flack for that if they released those white jerseys. On the orange I would outline the numbers. Just a nice small blue one would make them pop a bit more from the lighter orange.

Rating: 8.3/10

New Orleans Pelicans Concept - Taylor R.
T-ROY HITS US WITH THE CROSSOVER series that he's been working on. This jersey is no different than the others when the execution and design is superb. The home jersey isn't necessarily great looking to me. However, keeping in mind it's a basketball teams hockey jersey and that it gives us something new to look at to ponder I enjoy it. My one negative as a whole on the concept is on the white jersey's color choices. I think the navy blue would look a lot better in the gold area. The dark jersey has a very deep feel and dense while the white doesn't feel like the same team. It looks lighter and feels weaker with more gold. That would be my only change though.

Rating: 8.8/10
