Tuesday: Vacation Post

Today I'm writing from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Normally my posts take place in Buffalo but a little vacation never hurt anyone. Except my skin, which is burnt. You know what else is making my vacation better? Knowing that my Sabres made some top notch moves. How was the draft for your team? Like the trades? Picks? Basically we had a party in Buffalo. Nice feeling drafting a kid that has top star potential. Can't wait for October already.

During the draft we got to look at some jerseys. I'm sure you've all seen already. I'll put my small notes here. For Arizona I really do like the design, except I don't think it fits Arizona. Edmontons Alternate was a huge surprise and McDavid looked great in it. That orange is pretty. The other ones are pretty small changes. Colorado needs new jerseys. Montreal now looks even more ace, and I'm not even going to comment on the Ducks. Nothing really.

So since I'm vacation. I'll keep these probably shorter. I would have asked someone else to do it but a nice calm chillaxing post is something I wanted to do. So let's get these started.

HJC Open Round Robin entries (due TONIGHT @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW June 21-27 poll (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Philadelphia Flyers Concept - Andrew W.
Double color is always a classy move. When I first saw this I have to say I was surprised because I actually like the Flyers logo in that one color. When it comes to the striping I think it would be a better decision to bring in the flyers cuff swoop that they usually have. I think the Northwestern pattern you have is a little generic, and on the arms it gets a little jumbled with the TV numbers. Maybe just trying the Flyers one stripe could make it look better. To me at least. Surprised with this one. It's growing on me the more I look at it.

Rating: 8.1/10

Washington Capitals Concept - Dylan T.
Dylan uses, what I think should have been the primary logo for Washington's Winter Classic. Dylan I think has a decent idea here. He has a nice yoke design off to the shoulders but I think the rest of the jersey falls flat. Just adding a one stripe look makes this boring to me. Doesn't fit the yoke. Was this a two color jersey entry? If so I can understand why it is what it is but hypothetically I don't think this looks good with just red. Blue would definitely be a healthy addition. So I say, add some character to the striping. Make it all fit with the rest of the jersey. Also as it's been said before. TV numbers, name and number on the back should be a must when sending in concepts. Yes it might be a little extra but going that extra mile for concepts make them look much better.

Rating: 5.6/10

100th Anniversary Night - Taylor R. & J3
T-Roy & J3 make a 100th Anniversary night concept for every team. These are all throwbacks for one team to another. I'll just say, this would be awesome to see for a night. I'm not going to review everything since these are all existing jerseys but for the most part I'm a fan of the choices. Without looking I'm assuming these are all the first jerseys each team wore? They are all done nicely and like I said, would be awesome to see.

Rating: This needs to happen!

Colorado Avalanche Concept - Lucas D.
First things first, need to put an ID on this. Don't you want people to know who made this? Anyways, if this is going to be a whole series on who benefits from the Ducks template I'm actually curious to see the different looks you have. Colorado I think would be higher up there on the list. The arm and side striping better fits them than their current jerseys. With the Ducks though i think the round yokes are a problem with the modern, sleek, quick look. If you stay with the look though I would actually have the yoke on the burgundy jersey white to fit the whole scheme more. I think that would simply look better too. Or the blue needs a white outline. Take your pick.

Rating: 7/10 Upgrade from their current, but they need their own.

Utah Jazz Concept - Taylor R.
T-Roy is back with the NBA series. This is great. Right off the bat. Love their color scheme and love the look translated to an NHL jersey. I don't know if I can find something I don't like. It's executed nicely all the way around. Perhaps the shoulder logo could be bigger but that's not much. Everything else is beautiful to me.

Rating: 9.2/10

Los Angeles Kings Concept - Vaughn R.
Another two color concept for this post. For a logo on a two color jersey I think you chose the right one for the Kings. However I think you used it wrong in my opinion. I think the letters should be colored in with gold and the rest of the jersey should almost pay homage to their old jerseys. However, stay away from making exact copies. Mixing it up...two stripes? Vertical stripes? Chest stripe? Also the thickness of the stripes and outlines are all different and it doesn't make the jersey look like it's one. It's all over the place. I'd say nay to the front number and with everything just being one stripe I would take the outline off the numbers.

Rating: 6.3/10

Buffalo Sabres Concept - Colin M.
Last concept of the day is my hometown team. I'll start off by saying I like the logo choice. I'll go on to say that I don't think the jersey fits it. In theory people like to think NIKE would make the NHL a more modern look. I agree for the most part. I think original classic teams would stay but they would experiment with others. If they did choose this logo for the Sabres or something similar I would have to think the jersey would be more modern. Right now it's just basically their currents with no gray. In fact I think if NIKE took over and with this logo there should be more silver/gray. I would go back to the drawing board. I like the jersey design but just not with that logo. The alternate is a start but I think could be better. Just a B for the logo is kind of cutting it close with the Bruins. Double gold stripes I think could be something but I say a better logo is in need. Also I don't think a rounded yoke is necessary. Or a yoke at all. It screams classic but just needs a couple changes.

Rating: 6.5/10

Hopefully when I return to the 716 next week I'll be back to normal. I'll quickly end off this post with saying T-ROY'S JAZZ CONCEPT IS MY NOMINATION!

I'm going to get some sleep now for a long day tomorrow again at the beach and golf time. See ya next week!

Monday: Arizona Has Made a Mistake

Hello! It is a Monday, so therefore I have written this post to commemorate the fact!

If you didn't watch the draft or read the hockey news lately, you may have discovered that the Arizona Coyotes unveiled a  new jersey for next season, as well as updating both an alternate logo, showing off a new one, and a new wordmark. I'm going to review it like I normally do a jersey, so here it is:

Execution: It's an NHL jersey, so this of course passes. (1/1)
Striping: God awful. There is such a generic yet busy design on the arms, but the body is completely blank outside of that little tail stripe. The jersey is just not balanced whatsoever, and is really lacking any sort of real depth to make it stand out. (.25/2)
Effectiveness: I'm sad I have to see this on the ice (0/1)
Creativity: I looked at this and was immediately reminded of the Penguins jersey that Lemieux wore, now the Penguin's alternate. I guess it does stand out in the NHL. (1/2)
Other: Ok, what the hell was Arizona thinking? There are two teams in the NHL that I think are allowed to use vintage white in their main set and get away with it. That's the Minnesota Wild and the Arizona Coyotes. Because BOTH TEAMS USE BEIGE IN THEIR LOGOS. There is no beige in this concept, and the addition of black was poor. What Arizona said it's doing for that "Southwest flare" belongs on the West coast, not in a state who's entire design is and was based around aboriginal and Native American heritage. The most dissapointing thing to me is that the new logo is beautiful. I think it looks great for the team's style, and wish it could've been featured on a monochrome jersey. (1/4)

Overall: I think the picture posted on the Uniform Database does this jersey justice. When it was unveiled on the players, it just didn't look like it fit right. I  (3.5/10)

Some other changes were made during the draft that could be summed up in a few words

Anaheim: Used white laces on their home jersey instead of black. It looked pretty good, created some decent contrast on the jersey. I kind of preferred the black personally, though.
Colorado: Finally got rid of the "yeti foot" logo and replaced it with a very nice looking, albeit blended in, version of the Colorado flag's C, which was used by the Rockies.
Columbus: Switched their alternate jersey's logo to a more fitting color scheme and placed it on the shoulder. When I saw this, I was kind of surprised, because I was working on a logo with the EXACT SAME CHANGES for the HJC Open.
Edmonton: Brought back their classic WHA jerseys with numbers in the yoke. I actually did kind of like this style, even though the arms do look just a little bare.
Montreal: Decided to become incredibly vintage and add laces to their jerseys, as well as use the LNH logo. It's subtle, yet really hits home the "we're old fashioned!" style.
The HJC Open is upon us! You have today and tomorrow to submit your concepts! For the full calender:

COTW June 21-27 poll (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
And now, the concepts.

Brandon Cockeram - Windsor Spitfires

Execution: Solid. (1/1)
Striping: Beautiful and classic. One thing I would've personally done is to place the the name inside of the nameplate, but that's just my personal opinion. (1.5/2)
Effectiveness: Especially for an OHL team, yes! (1/1)
Creativity: Not overly creative, but using navy over black definitely helps this concept a lot. (1.25/2)
Other: I don't really have much to say. This jersey is just your typical jersey done well. Is it perfect? No, it's a very common design. Is it still a look that is great and can be used by any team? Yes! (3.5/4)

Overall: I love jerseys like this. They're just nice and plain, and that can always be a good thing. (9.25/10)

CPM - Vancouver Blazers

Execution: As always, you killed it. (1/1)
Striping: I love this nice straight slant. It works perfectly with how the logo is angled. One interesting choice is curving the arm stripes in rather than out to follow the pattern of the jersey. Good stuff and a great pattern. (2/2)
Effectiveness: This is by far my favorite jersey in this series, so of course it's a yes. (1/1)
Creativity: Killed. It. I have never seen a pattern this unique before, and it just looks so clean and well done. (2/2)
Other: The font curved up like that looks fantastic. I wish that there was a little bit more on the pants. (3.75/4)

Overall: Talk about a way to finish a series. (9.75/10) and a COTW Nom from me

Taylor Roy - 100th Anniversary Collection

Execution: The only items missing are the NHL and Reebok logos. (.75/1)
Striping: Simple and clean, this looks like any color identity in the league could use this scheme and get away with it easily. (1.5/2)
Effectiveness: Alongside the other fan jerseys, I'd pick this any day. (1/1)
Creativity: This is a little strange. It's almost identical to Brandon's concept, minus a few slight changes per team and a chest stripe. I do have to be fair, but like I said, this striping pattern is very common. (1.25/2)
Other: What gives this jersey that little one up are those logos. What a great way to show off each team. I'd love to see a series of this for each and every team. (3.75/4)

Overall: It's very similar, but incredibly different. I would buy the Hawks jersey of this in an instant (9.25/10)

Lucas Daitchman - Washington Capitals

Execution: You're missing your NHL logo. Also, the inside of the jersey should fit the color on the outside. (.25/1)
Striping: The pattern on the hem looks unbalanced, as though the black stripe is shorter than the white. (1/2)
Effectiveness: As an alternate, I could see this work. (1/1)
Creativity: This isn't the most creative concept. It's very similar to the alternate that's coming, with the Weagle. (.75/2)
Other: I think this jersey kind of seems like a blank template. I would love to see what else this jersey has to offer, and I think that it would be stellar with just a bit more. (3/4)

Overall: Something tells me you listened to the podcast and got this idea from BPoe. Keep working at it, you're already doing great for your first few concepts! (6/10)

Steven Grant - Arizona Coyotes

Execution: All great! (1/1)
Striping: It's plain. It's simple. I love how you did a color swap on the away. I love it. (1.75/2)
Effectiveness: ARIZONA, TAKE NOTE. (1/1)
Creativity: It isn't the most creative thing in the world, but I still like it regardless. (1.5/2)
Other: It's good. Everything is very organized and well put together. I guess black is the best pant choice, but I'm not a huge fan of plain black pants. (3/4)

Overall: Concepts like these are always good. (8.25/10)

Taylor Roy - Toronto Raptors

Execution: Everyone is killing it today, but I would've liked to see an NBA logo somewhere on the jersey. (.75/1)
Striping: Wow. I love this, it kind of gives me this weird vibe of Jurassic Park, which was a huge part of why this team is the Raptors. Like these tire mark-esque stripes, it seems like you're being chased by a pack of raptors. Also, sidenote, I did not like Jurassic World at all. (2/2)
Effectiveness: It makes me wish there was a second team in Toronto called the Raptors. (1/1)
Creativity: Great. I've never seen something like this before. (2/2)
Other: I wish there was some of that gray elsewhere in the concept. Maybe the pants or socks. (3.75/4)

Overall: Absolutely fantastic. You locked in the identity of the Raptors perfectly. (9.5/10)

John Visaggio - Colorado Avalanche

Execution: The logo does look a little low. Try to center it between collar and stripes a bit more. Also include all necessary logos, i.e Reebok. (.5/1)
Striping: I actually like this pattern a lot. It's very clean. (1.75/2)
Effectiveness: The Stadium series is all about being progressive and modern. I don't know if this really takes that cake. (0/1)
Creativity: This striping is just way too similar to the current alternate. (1/2)
Other: The numbers are big, but it's a Stadium Series jersey, so it's a bit of a catch 22. The only change I have to put here is to change the underflap to a white. (3/4)

Overall: I haven't seen your name before, so welcome to HJC! I do have to say that this is a great start. Good work, and keep going at it! (6.25/10)
Well, Monday's over. Time for me to crawl back into my hiding hole until next week. Remember to work on your concepts for the Open. That's what I've been up to lately, and let's just say the competition I've seen so far will be incredibly tough!

Enjoy the rest of your weeks, and as always,

-Jack G.

Sunday: Open Season

Man, a lot has happened in the last few days. I'll quickly summarize, and colour code it, because why not.

Edmonton unleashed their gnarly WHA-style orange 3rd jersey. Give the people what they want, what a novel concept!

Arizona also shown us some new jerseys. There's no real sense of identity in these jerseys, and it looks lazy, even for Reebok. Their old jerseys were decent, but there was a lot of room for improvement. Unfortunately, there was no improvement anywhere on this new set. Call Ted Black and fire up the oven, we have ourselves a turd burger.

Montreal, Columbus, Colorado and Anaheim made small but good changes to their jerseys. Montreal somehow found a way to be more old-school, Columbus recoloured their alternate logo and used it as a patch, Colorado traded their beloved Bigfoot logo for the "C" from their flag, and Anaheim changed their laces.

Washington also had a "new" jersey, swapping alternates by using the red jersey now instead of white. Both look great, but a dark alternate jersey is much more logical and convenient.

No team did too poorly at the draft, besides the Bruins. They lost Hamilton and Lucic, and gained the 13th, 14th and 15th overall picks, a few other picks, a prospect and Martin Jones. Not bad, but they wasted all of the picks, and could have done better in the backup goalie department.

As a Flames fan, getting Hamilton for that price was a steal. Great move!

Backup Goalie Musical Chairs!!!

Chris Pronger was traded, confusion ensued.

Aaaaaaaaaaand last but not least... it's HJC Open time!!!

Our annual tradition of a knockout jersey concept tournament is back, and is underway right now!  This year you'll have to survive 5 rounds and design 5 concepts to win, and the time-frame is really short, so it's an endurance, sprint, and test of skill all at the same time!

In case any of you didn't see the schedule of entries/voting, here it is:

(All deadlines are 11:59pm Eastern on specified day)

Round Robin entries: Saturday, June 27 - Tuesday, June 30
Round Robin voting: Wednesday, July 1 - Friday, July 3

Quarter-Semi Finals entries: Saturday, July 4 - Tuesday, July 7
Quarter-Semi Finals voting: Wednesday, July 8 - Friday, July 10

Semi-Finals entries: Saturday, July 18 - Tuesday, July 21
Semi-Finals voting: Wednesday, July 22 - Friday, July 24

Final entries: Saturday, July 25 - Tuesday, July 28

HJC Open Round Robin entries (due Tuesday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Alright, time for some concepts! Colour coded as well, because I'm just in a colour coding mood today.

Sudbury Wolves - Brandon C.

We all know how much I love the Wolves and their spectacular design choices. *Sarcasm*. Most concepts over-complicate their look and skew their traditional roots too much.

Striping pattern and colours fit a classic team like Sudbury.
Their alternate logo needs a lot of work, but it should be their primary logo, as shown here.
The blue alternations you made to the logo look very nice.
The fonts are outlined perfectly.

The font doesn't match the throwbacky feel to this set.
Using their current main logo as a shoulder patch would be a good idea.
The concept is too good. Sudbury's designers don't deserve this.

Overall: Pick a more classic font and a fixed up logo and this would be a perfect replacement. 8.5/10

Alaska Nanooks - Daryl D.

The Nanooks have pretty good jersey game already, so how does Daryl's uniform compare?

The stripe pattern is perfect for them.
The colours are balanced perfectly.
This logo is barely (if at all) used for their sports programs, but it could make an interesting alternate.
Yellow pants.

The logo could use some sort of an outline.
The white numbers having a yellow outline is a bad idea.
The gloves could have a bit more of a design to them.

Overall: Not all that exciting, but would make for a decent 3rd jersey.  7.6/10

Montreal vs Ottawa - Taylor R. & J3

Ah the Pairs Competition, good times! I thought Vaughn and I had a decent chance of winning, but Taylor and J3 put out an unbeatable set of concepts. Here are a few of those concepts.

Montreal's striping pattern is probably the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
The old Canadiens logo looks perfect with the jersey.
The cream colour for Montreal's jersey was a good choice.
Using the Senators shield logo was a good move as well.
The colours on the Sens jersey are well balanced and look fantastic.
Very original striping pattern on both jerseys.

The Sens jersey is busy, and having the chest stripes so high up looks strange.
Having the main logo where the captains patch goes makes things problematic for the captain.
I'm not really liking the name font on the Sens jersey.

Overall: Montreal's jersey would be 10/10, but I'd give Ottawa's a 7.7/10, so the total (with a bonus for solid presentation) is 9/10.

Calgary vs Edmonton - Taylor R. & J3

The Battle of Alberta hasn't meant much in a while, but adding a specialty game to the mix would be the perfect thing to spice it up.

That Flames logo is absolutely golden.
The Ronald McDonald stripes would be lame for any occasion besides a Retro Night.
The Oilers diagonal front is very interesting and unique. And it also looks great!
Both jerseys (and both concepts) are executed extremely well.

The name seems really small and hard to read on the Flames jersey.
While the jersey itself looks fantastic, it's hard to get a retro feel from the Edmonton set. It looks like a perfect Stadium Series set, but doesn't resemble a retro jersey at all.

Overall: A jersey matchup I'd love to see, even though they look like two very different eras.  8.3/10

Winnipeg Jets - Lucas D.

Besides the name, there's nothing much connecting the new Jets to the old. But if they combined the two, like Lucas does, could it work?

Updating the logo to have the new Jets jet, and a maple leaf, are terrific ideas.
The old Jets logo in the new colours looks great.
Font is a little more modern than retro, which fits the design nicely.

There are no TV numbers.
You could use the current Jets logo on one shoulder instead of the same logo on both.
A better-presented concept would have the shoulder patches not sticking out of the jersey.
The concept is a little rough and pixelated.

Overall: With a little bit of polish, this could be a fantastic redesign. The idea is perfect, it just needs some finish. 7.4/10

OKC Thunder - Taylor R.

Taylor comes back with a pair of basketball-to-hockey concepts, the first being for the OKC Thunder.

Fantastic colour scheme that works extremely well on a hockey jersey.
Colours are well balanced, and stripes are well designed.
Everything is a good size.
Font is a very good choice for the modern feel I get from the rest of the jersey.

The TV and back numbers should be dark blue. Orange doesn't contrast as nicely against white.  It would also match the dark jersey better.

Overall: Really sharp design. With one little fix, I'd say these would be perfect. 9.3/10

San Antonio Spurs - Taylor R.

Can Taylor top his Thunder concept with this one for the Spurs?

A black, white and grey colour scheme is hard to balance, but it's done perfectly here.
The side panels brought over from their basketball uniforms match up nicely.
Font choice is good.
Good use of their alternate logo.
This concept does a good job of being similar to the LA Kings in colour, yet looking nothing like the Kings in style.

The arm stripes don't go well with the side panels.
The pants stripe looks a little too thick.

Overall: Well executed, and certainly fits, but I'm not digging it as much as the Thunder concept. 8.8/10

My COTW nomination for today is Taylor R's OKC Thunder concept!

So don't forget to vote for COTW (with new poll system, sign into Google to use it), and send in those HJC Open entries before Tuesday night!

As always thanks for reading and have a good weekend.

What an abundance of new sweaters we got during the 1st round of the Draft last night! We're trying to get a podcast going, but here's a quick note on each.

Edmonton - I love the orange WHA alternate! They now have a jersey set that people have been asking for since 2007!

Arizona - What the hell? This is either too many ideas coming together and not working as one. Or it was just a throw in by a Reebok artist and the design team in Arizona happened to choose it.

Colorado - Sorry to see the yeti foot logo go, but the state logo is a nice replacement. Too bad they missed the boat again on removing the piping and maroon on the sides!

Columbus - The canon logo was fine as the alternate logo. Not a bad logo, but it seems out of place on the regular home and away sweaters.

Montreal - I've wanted them to go to a solid white collar with laces for a while. Those Original 6 rivalry games will look even better now. Oh, and Habs suck!

Anaheim - Not really a huge deal, but their jersey at the Draft had white laces as opposed to the black ones they have been using. I prefer the black laces, but this could have also been a situation where they lost of forgot to bring the black laces and white was the only replacement available.

What did you think of the new sweaters? Boston fans, how do you feel about your new GM? I've written this on Friday night, so he may have pulled off something spectacular on Saturday.

Friday: DRAFT DAY!

TGIF, welcome to the Friday post!

Today is draft day, one of the most exciting day of the NHL calendar, and what makes this draft even more exciting is the amount of trade rumours swirling around high impact players. Cam Talbot, Jeff Skinner, Phil Kessel, the #3 overall pick in the draft, Eddie L├Ąck/Jakob Markstrom and many other players are all available. The first domino has already fallen with David Legwand & Robin Lehner are now Sabres (a moment of silence for them) and the Sens getting a first round draft pick. So it's not long before we get more trades, probably on the draft floor. Later today, the Bruins traded Dougie Hamilton to the Flames for 2 second round picks, Hamilton was the 2nd of the two 1st round picks the Leafs sent to the Bruins for Kessel.

The Coyotes are unveiling their new jersey tonight at the draft, and if you read Brendan's post last night (which you should have already....just scroll down), I'm looking forward to it. The team may not wear it long, but it's nice to see black and white being used and not a mess of brick and sand and white without a hem stripe and one shoulder patch. Looking forward to that being unveiled, along with what other jersey news awaits us

Of course, the Draft isn't the only thing that starts tonight, the HJC Open starts tonight at Midnight! Get your entires ready and check out the HJC Design Blog and HJC Open page once that is made.

Don't think that the HJC and Draft excuse you from not voting if you haven't already! Jack & Dylan A. voted while they were hungover on morning alcoholic beverages and victory, what's your excuse? Giving birth? Then make the new bundle of joy vote too!

COTW & 2 Colour Redesign votes BOTH end tonight, so while your team drafts, get your vote in!

On to the 7 concepts for today!

Ste Sault Marie Greyhounds OHL Concepts (By: Brandon C.)

+ The G-Hounds wear Gretzky era edge jerseys now, and they look okay, but I always thought they looked best with black and silver, but not overwhelmingly
+ Lots of stars on the jersey and gear
+ The striping itself is great, and looks great both as a yoke and striping
+ Solid execution, and good layout

- The OHL logo switcher problem exists again, it's not a huge problem, but noticeable
- Some grey and black on the pants would look fantastic

Rating: 8.75/10

2017 Stadium Series Concept (By: Taylor R. & J3)

+....That Pens jersey though, it matches the logo so well and really would  have been perfect in say 1995 as an alternate, all the way down to the pants. I can see the NHL2000 logo on it already
+ Not to over shadow the Blues jersey, a much brighter version of their former alternate that was very well received
+ Love the shoulder patch on the Blues jersey, that trumpet needs to come back
+ As expected from two of HJC's top artists, great execution

- It's not a horrible logo, but the white Blues note is a logo I've never been fond of, the Navy note would look just fine
- Despite how much I love the Pens jersey, the original Pens logo is not a good shoulder patch

Rating: 9.25/10

Tampa By Lightning Concept (By: Lucas D.)

+ No Bolts script or template striping
+ Like the idea of lightning shaped striping, but not a cut out shape of lightning like the logo
+ There's just enough blue to work (not including the outline)

- Lucas is relatively new to HJC, and execution will come with time, so I'll just outline some problems
- No tv numbers or shoulder patches
- Stitching should stop at the hem stripe, even if it is angled
- The arm stripes are too high on the arm

Rating: 4/10- keep practicing and sending in concepts and taking advice from all the writers and you'll be getting higher numbers in no time!

New York Islanders Concept (By: Mike S.)

+ If the Islanders Cup winning teams has jerseys that matched without the cuffs, this is what I'd expect
+ With that said, this looks fantastic, the white jersey looks very different and open without the cuffs, they look solid

- The white jersey does look plain, if the stripes there was a yoke instead of cuffs or some sorta shoulder patch
- The NOB is much too small
- The logo on the white jersey needs an outline to match the logo on the blue jersey

Miami Heat Crossover Concepts (By: Taylor R.)

+ Taylor has done a really good job transferring NBA jerseys to NHL templates, and this is exactly how I'd picture the Heat to look as an NHL team
+ Red, Orange, Black and white all meld really nicely on the striping
+ Nice to see the MH logo on the yoke and classic Heat script on helmet
+ It's a small detail but the numbers on the back are such a part of the Heats look it'd be wrong not to have it on there

- The Black yoke is unnecessary  on the white jersey, and would match the NBA jersey bette without it

Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom. from me!

Milwaukee Bucks Crossover Concepts (By: Taylor R.)

+ The new Buck jerseys with their side panels isn't easy to do on a hockey jersey, but Taylor has made it work!
+ The pants look fantastic and match the shorts in the NBA
+ Like the Heat concept, it matches the basketball perfectly, numbers, tag on the bottom of the jersey, panels and even on the arms too
+ The two shoulder patches are perfectly chosen

- The socks could use some blue and black
- Not sure how I feel about the Bettman apron but it should work without it

Rating: 9.25/10

2017 NHL All Star Concepts (By: Taylor R & J3)

+ Orange, Black & White will always be my favourite All Star game colours, and it'd be nice for them to come back
+ While the jersey is retro inspired, it certainly has modern elements and it all blends together nicely
+ There's a perfect about of stars

- Making the stars and numbers lack on the white jersey black would match the script and black jersey
- Socks and gloves are pain

Rating: 9/10

Thursday: Almost Friday

Hello again all you fellow conceptualizers and jersey enthusiasts, and welcome back to another Thursday post on either HJC or the design blog. If you're reading this on the design blog then you know that HJC is down, and if you read that at all you now know it's either down or was down. As of now I have no idea if this post will end up on the design blog or not, but hopefully this problem gets resolved soon.

A few small bits of jersey news to give you guys now. The Capitals unveiled their alternate jersey on Tuesday and it is just the red version of the white alternate they have been wearing since the Winter Classic in 2011
Image from
The Arizona Coyotes also shared a teaser of the new jerseys they will be unveiling at the draft.
Image from the Coyote's twitter
Based of this teaser I really like the direction this appears to be going in. It's nice to see another color on the jersey too as opposed to just the red/maroonish color and white.

This week we have the usual COTW vote going on along with the 2 colo(u)r competition vote going on. I'm not sure where to vote for the 2 color competition as long as the blog is down however..

On to the concepts!
For anyone who already knows what I'm about to tell you feel free to just skip to the reviews. Actually feel free to skip either way because I have no control over what you do. However for those who want to read this here's the review system I've been using for the past few weeks and how the concepts will be graded:
Creativity: 1 point
Execution: 2 points
Realism: Would this jersey be believable to be seen on the ice? 1 point
Pizazz, wow factor, just something that makes the concept really stand out. It's quite hard to do but I don't think you can have a perfect concept without it: 1 point
Other areas of the concept, or just the overall look, regardless of the other categories: 5/6 points
If I feel that one of the categories doesn't need reviewed as much as the other ones I will exclude it from being reviewed and move the points to another one. Other areas will always be reviewed, and logically the final score will just be the individual scores added up.

Brandon C. - Sarnia Sting
Creativity: This concept draws from the teams past, however it's on a borderline just copying previous jerseys. It improves the look though so I'll give it the point (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution (2/2)
Realism: Considering a very close variation has been worn, I'd say this can (1/1)
Pizazz: (0/1)
Other areas: This jersey design is pretty good looking overall. This jersey keeps the striping pattern of their pre-edge set and but changes things up as well. The collar laces, while I'm not sure they're the best look, I don't mind them either. The addition of the black yoke also looks great, and the change of the font really improves the look as well. My only complaint is to maybe add some white on the black jersey, but I do think it looks solid as is as well.  (4.5/5)

Overall: Nice improvement and a link to the past (8.5/10)

CPM/Colin M. - Ottawa Nationals
Creativity: Definitely a creative concept (1/1)
Execution:  Solid execution (2/2)
Realism: Definitely could be on the ice (1/1)
Pizazz: This concept stands out in my opinion (1/1)
Other areas: This concept looks great. I really like the subtle gradient on the edges of the chest striping. It just adds a little bit of extra flair and character. The subtle gold accents is a nice touch too. There isn't much that can really be improved. The only things really is that there could be more blue on the white jersey and more white on the blue in order to balance the colors out better, and also the gold outline for the numbers on the white jersey blend in with the blue too much. Regardless of that I still really like these jerseys though. (4.5/5)

Overall: (9.5/10)

Jake88 - Nashville Predators
Creativity: Creative concept (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution (2/2)
Realism: This could make it on the ice (1/1)
Pizazz: I can say I've never really seen this before (1/1)
Other areas: This is an interesting jersey. I like the guitar pick logo used and how it "blends", for lack of better words", with the chest stripe. I also like the subtle design in the chest stripe, and having it go up to be a namebar of sorts is an interesting idea. I'm not sure that I like it the way it is here however. It looks somewhat awkward to me. I think the jersey could use more white as well, most likely on the number to make that more than just plain yellow. I do still like this jersey though. (4/5)

Overall: (9/10)

Lucas B. - Florida Panthers
Creativity: It gets the point (1/1)
Execution: There are a lot of loose white pixels around the stitching and edges of the jersey. There's also a little white in the middle of the logo. Also there needs to be a blue fill on the inside collar where the gradient is to match the back of the jersey. The gradient is correct in being there, as it is supposed to be a shadow, but there needs to be blue fill under it (0.5/2)
Realism: This is realistic (1/1)
Pizazz: (0/1)
Other areas: This is a simple and solid concept. The striping pattern looks good but it could do without the small blue stripe at the bottom. The blue stripe should also be closer to the other striping on the arms. Otherwise pretty simple and solid concept (4/5)

Overall: (6.5/10)

Scott D. - Florida Panthers
Creativity: It's different enough from the original Panther's jerseys to not be copies (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution (2/2)
Realism: Definitely realistic (1/1)
Pizazz: (0/1)
Other areas: Pretty simple and solid concept. The Panthers look better in red than blue in my opinion. The yellow looks great the way it's used as an accent color especially on the red jersey. I would maybe make the striping a little more thick and bold on the red jersey though (4.5/5)

Overall: (8.5/10)

Taylor R. - Denver Nuggets

Creativity: Definitely (1/1)
Execution: Solid execution as Taylor always gives us (2/2)
Realism: If the basketball and hockey teams in Colorado switched names, I could see them wearing this (1/1)
Pizazz: An NBA series isn't something you see much (1/1)
Other areas:  This set is just a translation of the Nuggets jersey design onto a hockey jersey. The basketball designs have actually worked quite well with hockey, and this one is no exception. The pants designs in this series have actually looked pretty good despite being unusual for hockey. Only thing that can be improved is that the name on the white jersey is hard to read. (4.5/5)

Overall: (9.5/10)

Taylor R. - Indiana Pacers
Creativity: Again, definitely (1/1)
Execution: Again, solid execution as Taylor always gives us (2/2)
Realism: Only reason I can't see this on the ice is because there's a basketball in the logo, but that doesn't count (1/1)
Pizazz: Again, not everyday you see an NBA series (1/1)
Other areas: I like the way this set works compared to the NBA jerseys. I like that rather carry over the side paneling you've used the design as a full arm yoke and hem stripes. It works really well like that and this looks good as a hockey jersey. This isn't really your fault but it would be nice to see more blue on the white jersey, but it's still fine as is. (4.5/5)

Overall: (9.5/10)

Good set of concepts today. I'm going to give my COTW nomination to CPM's Ottawa Nationals conceptWant to leave some feedback or did you disagree with my reviews? Then leave a comment! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you guys next week.

Wednesday: Rally Daze

Hey there all you rowdy HJCr's. The draft is this week and we'll get a glimpse of the new Arizona jerseys. And then the Blackhawks will have to start tearing apart their championship team so before that reality hits I'm going to share some more happiness with you.

I read the post Monday and yes Jack, I was at the rally at Soldier Field. It was a blast. I wa at the parade in 2010 and 2013 but wasn't lucky enough to get into the actual rallies due to a Cubs game in 2010 and too many damn people in 2013. But this year, due to storms in the area, Grant Park was too muddy for 2 million people to stomp around, so free tickets were given away for a rally in Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears and site of the 2015 Stadium Series game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The tickets were awarded to those with the best of luck. I sat on Ticketmaster for about 15 minutes looking at a "Please Wait" screen. I knew so many people trying to get tickets, but only 2 got some, myself and one of my friends who I went with.

I'll share one picture with you here and if you're even remotely interested you can check out my Instagram (@dbroalexander) where I posted more picture and videos. I haven't put everything I wanted to up yet but there's plenty of #TBT's coming up, about one every week, so keep an eye out. But even once the parade pics are done, I do post quite a few hockey related pictures and designs I whip up, like my "Blackhawks Did The Thing" image from last week.

There wasn't anyone checking your tickets and you could basically walk anywhere in Soldier Field so once the rally got done we all walked down onto the field and played in confetti because we're children. Look how happy I am. Also note, my t shirt has jersey stripes because I'm a geek.

While you're busy looking at how cute I am, you should vote. The COTW Vote ends Friday, as per usual, and the 2 Color Comp. ends Thursday. So. Go. Vote. Now.

Shall we take a gander at some conceptual jersey designs?

Pittsburgh Penguins Alternate Jersey Concept - Lucas D.
Essentially the Penguins first Winter Classic jersey and alternate from 08-11, which was based on the team's colored jersey from 1986-73. Lucas had added some yellow to the jersey and thinned out the navy blue stripes. I think the stripes should stay bold. I think the yellow could work here but not when it's very thing and surrounded by white. It's pretty hard to see. Not a huge fan of the font. Doesn't seem to fit to me. I think with a few tweaks this would make a good update to a classic Pens jersey.

Rating: 6/10

Stockton Heat Concept - Scott D.
Scott wishes to see the Stockton team in something other than a Calgary jersey. I don't think the striping is bad by any means, but I do think it comes off as a little busy for as simple as the the branding is. The striping on the pants could use some white, and the yokes could use the missing colors form the stripes as well. I think you could simplify the striping and ditch one of the colors. The gloves could use some black on them as well.

Rating: 7/10

Saginaw Spirit Concept - Brandon C.
Bam. This is it. Great! The striping here fits Saginaw's patriotic branding perfectly. Red and white stripes straight from the flag, plus I'm a suck for the colored hem/white jersey look. I with the team had some sort of alternate logo, because I'd like to see something in the shoulders. Maybe just a star or something. Nice improvement from their actual set.

Rating: 8.5/10

Los Angeles Sharks Concept - WHA Resurrection - Colin M.
Colin brings a little flair into the LA Sharks jerseys. The shark tooth pattern is clever. I think it could be improved though, the way the "teeth" are now they would never close because the points are on top of each other. Plus the pattern looks like black diamonds. It looks better on the collar. Move one of the rows of teeth over slightly so those teeth could actually close.

Rating: 8.5/10

Charlotte Hornets NBA-NHL Concept  -Taylor R.
Charlotte has one of the best logos in the NBA and a great color scheme. I love this scheme on a hockey jersey. The striping is basically straight from their basketball jerseys, but I would lose the baby blue. I don't really know where it's coming from. There's a couple other alternate logos that I think would look great on a jersey, maybe an alternate is in the works?

Rating: 9/10

Cleveland Cavaliers NBA-NHL Concept - Taylor R.
The NBA's most recent runner ups. I don't care much for the NBA but I would align myself with the Bulls, so I should dislike this. But as a designer with no bias, I think the Cavaliers logos/unis look great. I love the colors. Shoot, they've had a pretty good history of interesting jerseys. I'm very intrigued by the pants' stripes. Also, I think if you used THIS logo on the shoulders, and used the C logo as a captain's patch, it would be a very clever use of logos and would look great.

Rating: 9/10

Ottawa Senators Concept - Scott G.
I think it's only a matter of time before the Sens ditch their cookie cutter messes and adopt the classic "O" jerseys in some way shape or form. I'd like them to do something like Scott gives us, those beautiful O jerseys but with some modern updates and stuff. The gold trim looks great, and the laurels in the stripe is great as well. The only things I really don't care for are the yokes on the white jersey and the colored namebars. I could live with the yoke, but the namebars are killin' me.

Rating: 9/10 and a COTW Nom!

Some really great looking concepts today. I smell some other COTW noms comin' up. Have a great week everyone and enjoy the draft! Also... this got shared while I was writing the post...
