Friday: In the Dark

Happy Halloween Readers!

Are you dressing up this year to party/handout candy/get candy?

If so, why not share in the comments?

The Bruins dressed up as the characters from Frozen, which is awesome!

Need a last minute costume idea? Why not just throw a hockey jersey on, a paper bag and call it a Leafs/ fan in April?

The jersey world is not immune to dressing up, particularly in the minor leagues.

In the ECHL, the Toledo Walleye and Evansville Icemen are playing dress up..on November 22nd for Super Hero night. The Walleye will be Adam West Batman, and the Icemen will be Ugly Tablecloth  The Riddler.

Photo from toledowalleye.com

How does it look...fantastic. Obviously no team could do this full time, but once a year, like Star Wars jerseys in minor league baseball, there's a certain charm to teams wearing outrageous jerseys that emulate pop culture icons.

Halloween is the 2nd most important thing going on tonight, however. It's the end of the entry phase for the Quad City Mallards contest! Remember, your jersey may be ACTUALLY WORN in an ECHL game, just like those Batman jerseys. Get your entry in before midnight TONIGHT!

Also important, COTW voting ends TONIGHT! Remember to get your vote in!

Finally, get in your HJC 5th anniversary logo concepts. There's only one entry so far, and it will be featured all November now, unless you enter, then yours might be.

On to the Concepts!

----------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders Concept (By: David P.)

The Islanders are playing quite well (yes Phil & Caz, you did tell me so) but their new home needs some touch ups before it's ready for hockey. This embarrassing oversight in jumbotron symmetry inspired David's concept. It's a very simple concept, not much of a change, but still pretty funny. The logo is very pixelated though. Seeing the back of the jersey and having the numbers be off centred would complete the concept. It's not a concept meant to be taken seriously, so I won't rate it based on the normal scale, but on the joke concept scale.... (8/10)

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Alan H.)

As I've mentioned before, while I have a nostalgic love for this pattern, the original jerseys were far from good looking, even decent looking. Alan tries to combine the inaugural reborn Sens with their first alternate and what we get is an interesting mix that works in some ways, though the flaws of the original are still visible. The logo swap was a huge upgrade, as is the switch to black as a primary colour. Having the swoosh be less steep and less consuming of the hem works makes for a better chest stripe rather than an ugly hem stripe. The numbers on the back are the only problem with this concept. They aren't invisible, but the 4 or whatever number would be there would be hard to see. The way around that is to make that space the colour of the jersey. (8.5/10)

Stadium Series Concept (By: Ben S.)

Oh this would be such a fun outdoor game. The Sharks and Canucks battling it out 1994 style. I'm of the opinion that the Stadium Series jerseys should stick to one template, but not look the same (different stripping patterns, logos, thickness, gear etc.) The Canucks jersey alone is incredible. This would be a fantastic was of reintroducing the skate on the plate identity. Nice pants design. The Sharks jersey is also good, though I would have used the old shark rather than the new shark, since the numbers go much better with that logo. (9/10) COTW Nom. from Me!!!

Arizona Coyotes Concepts (By: CPM)

Oh full bodied desert artsy coyote, how I've missed you (Though, I was 7 when this logo was dropped and just born when it was introduced). Anyways, the Yotes appear to be playing with the idea of ditching their boring jersey for something brighter and with that pattern. I love the shear amount of pattern on both jerseys, and the angled yoke, beautiful touch on the back. The white jersey I'd say is the better of the two, especially since the maroon jersey doesn't use any white, and white/sand can work together well, even in small amounts. The collar may be a bit too much though. Also, the font, while unique, reminds me of the late 90's Leafs rather than the Yotes font which with a small outline would be better set. (8.75/10)

Modo SHL Concept (By: Zack W.)

On Jets96's up and coming artists, Zach is certainly starting make a name for himself, and is improving every post.  This concept looks awesome, though it is not without flaws. First the good, the striping! It's a unique pattern and since MODO is one of those classic team that should have a classic alternate. The stars on the helmet and socks look sick too. The problems will be fixed with practice . The name on the back and numbers are blurred and as I mentioned, using another program will fix that (Word tends to blur the lines) The stars on the shoulder stripe would look better if they were more sublimated. The logo on the front is too large. (7.25/10)

That's the post folks! Remember to vote, get your entries in and have an awesome halloween.

Thursday: Pool Talk

Hey gang, welcome to another awesome Thursday post here at HJC!

A few little tidbits to throw your way before we get to concepts:

1) The Mallards competition is nearly finished! If you haven't submitted your entry, you have less than 2 days to do so.  We almost have 80 entries, which is insane! Keep 'em coming!

2) Ryan is looking for a 5 Year Anniversary logo/patch to showcase on the blog next month.  He wanted one last week, and got one entry, so he's accepting entries this week as well.  Make a design for the best hockey jersey blog out there, and have said blog showcase that design for a whole month? Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

3) Congratulations to Jake88 for winning the COTY 3rd Quarter Vote.  He now has 2 designs in the COTY semi-finals, giving him really good odds to win it all. Also congrats to Dylan N. for winning last week's COTW vote.

4) Unrelated to the blog, but I wanted to share the details of a small "hockey pool" I'm in with a few friends.  We do things a little differently. At the start of the year we pick 3 teams, and whoever owns the team that gets closest to the Stanley Cup (or wins it) wins the pool.  Fairly simple eh?  The teams were picked in a draft style, so you might not get all the teams you want.  So here is how the draft went:

Me: Boston, Pittsburgh, Anaheim

Friend 1: Montreal, Philadelphia, Nashville

Friend 2: New York Islanders, Los Angeles, Vancouver

Who here likes my chances?  Right now, I think I did pretty good with my picks, but there's a long season ahead of us, so who knows what will happen.

Anyway, concept time!

HJC 5 Year Anniversary Logo (due this week)

Montreal Canadiens - Connor J.

Yay:  First up is Connor's Montreal concept.  Any Habs concept that isn't their current style is automatically interesting, and a primarily blue jersey is very intriguing.  The jersey stays pretty simple, but the full length arms are something different for Montreal, possibly for the better.

Nay:  This concept is rough around the edges, literally. Where the stripes meet the end of the jersey, the edges just look really choppy. The TV numbers on the back look slightly bigger than on the front, especially the 7.  The hem stripes could be moved down just a little bit. Finally, I think having a blue outline on the logo, and then a thin white or red outline outside of that would look a little nicer, being very nitpicky there though.

Overall: Lots of things I like, but quite a few little issues.  Executed a bit better and this would be golden.  7.3/10

 Seattle Metropolitans - CPM

Yay:  Colin continues his "Brights Series" with the Metropolitans.  Personally, a Seattle NHL team with any other identity would be a crime.  This set looks really crisp and clean, and while it's design isn't far off from the original, simplifying the S and using pure white gives this jersey a timeless appeal that could work in any era.

Nay:  I feel like the laces on the white jersey should be a different colour, not just white.  I know there isn't much to work with, but with how simple the logo is and plain most of the jersey is, some good shoulder patches would get this concept really close to 10/10.

Overall: Love it!  9.1/10

 Hershey vs Mars - David P.

Yay:  Next up we have two classic candy brands fighting it out.  Hershey retains it's classic appeal with these monotone traditional jerseys. which fit the identity perfectly.  In contrast, Mars uses a modern approach which also suits it's product identity. Mars' striping pattern, used by Anaheim, has the right amount of flashiness without going overboard.

Nay: All of these jerseys do their job perfectly, besides the black Mars jersey.  Get rid of the yoke (or colour it in with another colour), and find a way to recolour the logo or get rid of the circle outline.  The Mars logo looks really rough and pixelated.

Overall: While the degree of difficulty isn't too high with this concept, the jersey styles match the brands perfectly.  7.8/10

2015 ASG Arizona and Tampa - Jason P.

Yay: Next up is the 4th and final part of Jason's All-Star Game series.  This concept shows the Arizona Coyotes in ASG blue, and the Tampa Bay Lightning in ASG red.  If I understand correctly, Jason sees the ASG players wearing these jerseys with their respective logos, instead of the NHL shield which is a pretty cool idea.  The Coyotes look fantastic in these colours.  The presentation and detail on this concept, although cluttered, is very impressive.

Nay:  The logos look too big on all of the jerseys.  Comparing the same jersey with different colours and logos is kinda interesting, but I think revisiting this series with stripe patterns that reflect each team would be a great idea, like making the stripe patterns for the Coyotes resemble their 90's striping in a way.

Overall:  The concept itself is simple to execute, but the basic idea and detail/presentation are pretty cool. 8/10

Minnesota Wild - Zach P.

Yay:  Finally, we have Zach's Minnesota Wild alternate.  Considering that their home looks like an alternate and this looks similar in design to their road jerseys, I could see this becoming a home uniform for them.  Traditional, not too "Christmas-like", and still looks good with the vintage white.  I'd easily take this over their current red jersey.

Nay: I don't really get the "M" logo. It doesn't look like something they've used before, or would use, yet its thrown all over the place here.  Personally, I'd use their wordmark logo seen on their current alternate, or the shoulder patch from their old road uniforms.  I'd also get rid of the green gap between the number and outline, and add some TV numbers.

Overall: In general, I like it, but it needs a bit more work.  7/10

My COTW nominee is going to be CPM's Seattle Metropolitans concept!

If you are bored with nothing to do after this post, refer to the list above and make those Mallards/5 Year Anniversary concepts.  Finished? Then make sure you vote for this week's COTW.  Done that? ...well that's all I have this time, so relax, watch some hockey, and work on some concepts!

That's it for me today.  Thanks for reading and Happy Halloween!

Wednesday: It's a numbers game.

 It's Wednesday! That means... another post full of conceptual goodness! But before you start reading and enjoying this post, why not vote for COTW? Four concepts are featured this week, so at least one must satisfy you! And once you do that, finish your Mallards jersey concept if you haven't already, but don't procrastinate!

*** Edit by Ryan ***
Over on the HJC Design Blog, I've tried to get all the info I have regarding the different levels of jerseys you can purchase, on one post. I put a bit of time into it, so go check it out. You may learn something.
*******************

Let's move on to the show. Today I have a different way of rating concepts. I will give you a player number. If i give you Luongo (his number is 1) it is equal to 0.1/10. If i give you Stamkos (his number is 91) It is equal to 9.1/10. Essentially, you don't want to get a player with a low number.

Dion - Pittsburgh Penguins
Positives: Pittsburgh looks great in gold! The striping reminds me of the striping found on the powder blue alternate from the winter classic a while ago. Angled stripes work well with the logo.
Negatives: The robo penguin logo should stay in the past. It's not as good as their current logo. Execution is good but helmet logos would make it better.
Overall: It's not bad, but it's not as good as their new alternate jersey. Player: Tyler Toffoli

Jason - All star game

Positives: I'm guessing he Jersey take inspiration front the current Columbus jerseys and the old Minnesota jerseys. Its simple but it looks nice.
Negatives: I need a little context. Does every team have their logo on the front of the jersey? Why a dark and light jersey?
Overall: Well detailed concept, but I need a little more info. Player: Victor Hedman

Nathan - Florida Panthers

Positives: It's not often we see logo concepts, so its always fun reviewing them! This is a mashupt between the old Panthers alternate logo and the current logo. It really looks like the panther is jumping out of the roundel!
Negatives: In my opinion, roundels are used often enough that when you have a logo that can hold on its own ( in this case the panther logo ) then why put a roundel with it.
Overall: Great idea, but comes up short. Player: Jaromir Jagr

Zach - Nashville Predators

Positives: Nashville could use a nice blue alternate. Great execution.
Negatives: I don't get the striping. Is it supposed to be piano keys? It looks off to me. When I think of Predators I think of a fierce modern jersey and not something classic.
Overall: good start but I'd go in a more modern direction with this. Player: Braden Holtby

CPM - Winnipeg Jets

Positives: Love that Colin took out the light blue of the colour scheme. In my opinion the colour did not fit well with the logo. Instead cooling brings us more grey! The yoke looks really cool. Execution is superb.
Negatives: I feel like the hem and arm striping would fit better the Colorado branding, it doesn't look bad, but it seems a bit off having mountainy stripes
Overall: Colin has been giving us great jerseys with his Bright series. PLayer: Sidney Crosby

That concludes today's post! Like a concept? Nominate it! Don't like a concept? Bash it! Kiding, but seriously vote, and keep making concepts! Have a great week everyone!

Tuesday: Alternates everywhere!

Hey guys, Caden here. So yeah. The amount of concepts being sent in is pretty low. We only have 5 for today's post. I know you may be busy with your Mallards concepts, cause we have a lot of those, but you should submit regular ones as well. I think I can speak on behalf of Ryan and the other writers when I say that any poor feedback on your concept wasn't meant to hurt your feelings, and it definitely wasn't meant to make you stop sending in concepts. Keep working and you will get better.

CPM Montreal Canadiens

Colin, the now 2-1 assistant GM for my fantasy team, "Brights" the Canadiens, adding a chest stripe to the away jersey. This series has been one of my favorites on HJC recently. I'm going to be sad when it ends. Hopefully we can get some of the same well executed concepts. I love the new style of the chest stripe. Also, I've always thought that the home and away jerseys should be the same design (where permitting). I don't like the solid red shoulder yoke on the white jersey, maybe add a blue stripe...

A

Dion San Jose Sharks
I've never gotten to review any of Dion's concepts in my posts, so welcome! I like the grey in the striping. Another thing I'm a fan of is the recolored logo. It looks really sharp! I really think that you should add a hem stripe, it will help differentiate it from the home jersey. A hint of orange would also be cool.

B+

Jason NHL All Star Game

I never thought about this, but this is an amazing idea! If you do all of the same design jerseys, It would be a cool idea to have the logo from the team the player came from as the front crest, and delegate the all star logo to the shoulders. Not sure how that would fare on TV though. I wish that you would have done the black and green rumored to be on the 2015 All Star jerseys.

B

SUC  Tampa Bay Lightning

I don't really have much to say about this particular concept. I love it as a fan jersey and maybe even a one off, but I reallllly never want to see it on the ice again in the 2010s. The 90s afforded designs like this, but I don't think it would work today. ALSO, the big point here, none of this is your design. You took an original jersey, put the current logo and block font onto it and called it quits. Maybe to work with this design you have to modernize it (somehow) and make it more original and creative.

F (If this jersey never existed and it was your original design, I would give you an A for creativity.)

SG-94 Edmonton Oilers

As the Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup parade moves through downtown Edmonton, the millions of fans scream, as the team drives by, sporting their classy new alternate jerseys. Ok, so we might be a long way off from that, but I hope we aren't a long way off from this jersey (or something like it) being used by the Oilers. Orange is such a big part of their branding, I wish that they used it as a primary color for a jersey. The one thing I dislike is the shoulder yoke. Eww,

A- (without the yoke it would be an A, with a good looking yoke an A+)

So that's all for the post today! I hope you enjoyed. You guys should totally send in concepts. Who knows, it might be featured in NHL 15!

Monday: Buzz buzz....

Good afternoon fellow hockey enthusiasts!

Before we jump into things I have a few quick reminders for you...

Only one COTW vote this week, so be sure to help pick that winner. You also have til the end of Friday to get your Mallards entries in...  I better get busy on mine! Also, don't forget, we've got our anniversary coming up...Hope you didn't forget, did you make us a logo?

Quad City Mallards Jersey Competition (ends October 31st)

So those of you who who follow me on Twitter or Tumblr may have seen this last Tuesday when it broke, but NHL 15 had its latest content update... The update included little things here and there, some new alternate jerseys around the league, St. Louis' new jerseys, and some CHL jerseys. I thought nothing of it, until I received a tweet from Mr. Tyler Gross letting me know my Sarnia Sting jersey had made it into the game...

Now, my Sarnia jersey was designed in early 2012 and started being worn later that year. It should have been in NHL 13... It wasn't... It should have been in NHL 14... It wasn't... and then this year rolls around and the jersey isn't in the game at launch (along with a lot of other key features). I'd lost all hope that it would appear in the EA title. I didn't know whether to believe it. I'd been fooled before by this before... (I have mean friends)

Tyler sent me a screenshot of the team select screen that looked legit so I had to check it out for myself.... and... oh my...

NHL 15 Screenshot - TubbsFM - Reddit
So I popped my copy in and started playing.

NHL 15 Screenschot

The feeling was so surreal, something that I created (And also was originally featured on THIS site before the Sting competition) was in the NHL series. Now I've seen the team wear it in real life. I've seen the NHL post an instagram of a player in my jersey. I love when the jersey gets exposure, but this is special. I've been playing this series for as long as I can remember.....

As of right now, I haven't seen the jersey pop up in HUT, which I play the most. So the only way to see it in the game right now is play as the Sarnia Sting. Hopefully it finds its way into HUT so I can make my team wear it. Would love to see some current NHL stars rocking the jersey in the virtual worl

I also did this...

Maybe someday.......

Enough about me, lets get to the concepts!

Chicago Blackhawks Third Jersey Concept - Josh L.
Josh wants to see the chest stripe back in Chicago, but he goes way out of the box with it. The Tomahawk C logo gets the main crest treatment, which, don't get me wrong, I'm a Hawks fan, and I love the logo, but I don't think it looks right as the main crest on a jersey. It's also the wrong C. The team puts the C used here on merchandise and marketing material, while THIS C is used on the jersey. The name on the back is way too big while the number seems small, but maybe that's because the name is so big. The TV numbers are placed in a silhouette of the Hawks' primary logo complete with feathers. That's way too busy to go on the arm of a jersey. That logo should be on the shoulders and not as a silhouette. I think this is close to being a suitable third jersey, but some of those super out of the box ideas aren't going to fly on a Hawks' sweater.

Rating: 5.5/10

Old Dominion University Hockey Concept (ACHA) - James J.
Nice to see ACHA teams get represented on the site. I played in the ACHA for three years. Through some research it looks like the OD team is a club team not really run by the school. Their jerseys are nothing to write home about. James adds a little more character to them. I think the stripe under the logo is so thin, that it's unnecessary. The arm striping is very paint-bucket-y but the blue arm length yoke kind of makes it look better. The font used for the name and numbers could be way better as well. The front number (grr) looks too small while the number on the back looks too big. The namebar isn't the right size for the name, it should be barely longer than the name and barely taller than the letters. Lastly, the NHL patch on the collar should be missing.

I don't think this is that far off from being a really nice jersey. It'd be nice to see a light version too.

Rating: 6/10

Battle of the Brands Concept - Xbox One vs. PS4 - David P.
This rivalry tends to get heated between nerds. I'm one of the nerds but I keep my temper down because I don't care THAT much. The Xbox jerseys are green Buffalo jerseys and the PS4 jerseys most closely resemble the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the QMJHL, so nothing new in the jersey department. I am a sucker for a green jersey though. The shoulder patches on both jerseys are way too close to the collar and I'd avoid using wordmarks. The Microsoft logo should be fine on its own, it's very recognizable on its own. As for the Sony logo, which IS a wordmark, maybe try a sponsorship patch on the chest. Honestly, I don't think either set needs the shoulder patches.

Rating: 6.75/10

NHL All Star Game Jersey Concepts - Pt. 1 & 2 - Jason P.
A little bit of background here would be nice. Like, are these jerseys for the fans of each individual team or are they game or skills competition jerseys for the players. Why is there a home AND away for each team? Shouldn't one conference be dark and one be light? Besides all of that, it's different to see the logos colored this way on jerseys. Not necessarily a bad different either, it's done right. Clearly, a lot of work went into this, especially figuring out how to make the Blackhawks logo look right in a monotone color scheme. The jerseys themselves are pretty tame compared to the last few All Star games. I wouldn't mind seeing something more out of the box though, it's what I'm used to.

Rating: 7.75/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept - Brights Series - Colin M.
I'm a big fan of blue in the Penguins color scheme. I don't think they'll ever return to their blue roots full time, but something like this as an alternate would look great. I really like both jerseys here, but the white jersey looks like it would make a great white jersey for the Buffaslug. I'm a fan of this concept and maybe one day we'll actually get to see something like this.

Rating: 9/10

Regarding the Blackhawks secondary logo I mentioned earlier in the post...

As a design nerd and Hawks fan, it pisses me off that the tomahawk logo is different on the jerseys and everywhere else. I love Love LOVE the C on the jerseys. The serif makes it look way better. I would love nothing more than the Hawks getting their shhhhhhtuff together and using the actual jersey C everywhere all the time. What do you guys think?

end rant...

Well that ends today's post on HJC! Hope you enjoyed it, and if you really love us, you'll vote and get your Mallards entry in this week. Just saying...

Have you seen the new "Crosscheck" jerseys available?

Obviously sales of the "Black Ice" series must have gone so well that the next logical step needed to be taken.
"Black Ice" jersey - Photo: shop.NHL.com
We have all black jerseys, now lets lighten them up a bit! Don't worry though, one of these bad boys will only set you back $170 with a player name and number. I expect to see a room dedicated to these black and grey jerseys someday at the Hall of Fame. BTW, that was all sarcasm.

Also on a jersey note, if you like the Ducks' 3rd jersey from last year, the US shop.NHL.com has it on for $74, with custom cresting. Not too bad of a deal!

I finally got my Quad City Mallards entry in this week. You have until the end of Friday to get yours in. As I am writing this we currently sit at 65 entries and I really hope we can hit 80. Saturday: Jersey Debut

Hello everyone! In today's post we alternates for the Panthers, Kings, Blue Jackets, and Islanders. We've got the return of the "Fishsticks" logo, and a concept for a high school team! Also, I've got an update on the jerseys I designed for the Mississippi RiverKings of the SPHL.

You may remember a post a did a few months back about how I worked with the Mississippi RiverKings this summer to design a new set for the team to wear during the 2014-2015 season. This weekend I headed down to Southaven, Mississippi (just south of Memphis) to see the jersey on ice at the RiverKings home opener against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. I must say that I am immensely proud of how the jerseys look on the ice, and how they compare to the rest of the SPHL. The RiverKings may have lost the game by a goal, but they looked like the more professional team on the ice, which is what my goal was from the start. Here are a few pictures:

(Image Credit: RiverKings.com)
 Here are the jerseys side-by-side hanging up in their pro shop. I saw several people wearing them on opening night, so I'm glad the fan reaction is favorable.

This is about as good as I could do with an iPhone at warmups. They really do look natural on the ice, and against the Ice Flyers messy, ad-covered jerseys, looked like a real professional team.

The RiverKings and I may have more work coming out in the future. That's all I'll say for now, but I'm excited to see that some of my work is becoming a reality.

Also, this past week marked one full year as HJC's Saturday writer! It's been a great, fulfilling experience, and I think writing fits me more naturally than designing. Which, speaking of HJC anniversaries, Ryan is offering you all a chance to design HJC's Fifth-Year Anniversary logo! The logo will appear on the website during the entire month of November, so get your concepts in to Ryan very soon!

Let's move on to today's concepts!

Florida Panthers Concept - Willie W.

Positives: No sandy gold on the logo, just traditional athletic gold, the way it should be! The Panthers could use a jersey that feels more unique to Florida than the Reebok template that they wear today. The overall jersey design is pretty clean and detailed. I believe the striping pattern and colors compliment the red well, but..

Negatives: ...the Panthers' ownership made it pretty clear that hated the old two-tone blue, born of their shaky partnership with airline company JetBlue. I actually like it, but maybe not with that logo. The inside of the collar area needs to be colored red instead of white.

Overall: This is a step in the right direction. (7.25/10)

Weld Central High School - Mario A.

Positives: The jerseys have a nice, traditional feel to them. The design is simple, and wouldn't look amateur-ish on the ice.

Negatives: It's essentially just a recolored Bruins set with a new logo. Just not much creativity here. The newer Reebok wordmark should be used instead of the old logo that hasn't appeared on hockey jerseys for about three years now.

Overall: We've never had a concept for Weld Central High, but I feel like I've seen this concept many times. (6/10)

Los Angeles Kings Concept - RBowling

Positives: I wasn't a fan of the Kings' jerseys prior to their rebrand in 2011, but they went the opposite direction from what I was hoping they would go. Instead of owning purple, a history color of royalty, and making it central to their brand, they went with a boring black/silver/white design that doesn't make much of an impression. This concept aims to bring some of the purple back.

Negatives: If you're going with purple, go full purple. Make the jersey itself purple. Go crazy. This concept, like the one I reviewed from RBowling last week suffers terribly from been extremely pixlated. It makes it difficult to discern details in a design when that's distracting you. This is likely due to RBowling recoloring his concepts from images taken off of nhluniforms.com. The logo used her is not one of the Kings better logos, but they don't have many. It's over-wrought. Also, the design is just too similar to the Wild's red jersey.

Overall: Work at creating concepts without recoloring an existing concept. Even if it looks rough at first, it will help you get better. (4/10)

Columbus Blue Jackets Concept - Zach W.

Positives: Columbus's main logo doesn't look bad recolored in their alternate palette. The Blue Jackets have one of my favorite alternates in the league right now. Shadow effect behind the concept helps it stand out.

Negatives: Contrasting cuffs rarely ever works, and this is another case of that. the hem and arm striping is too much. Take it down a stripe or two. The concept needs sleeve numbers. I consider that a necessity, and wouldn't send a concept in without them. The non-traditional yoke, although a good design, doesn't seem to fit well with a concept so heave in traditional striping and vintage white.

Overall: There's some potential here, but right now I don't see this as an upgrade over Columbus's current third. (7.25/10)

Boston Bruins Soccer Crossover Concept - Brady S.

Positives: We've seen a few hockey/soccer crossover series lately, and I think the most difficult hockey designs to translate over to soccer are the traditional, "Original Six" teams' designs. I like how Brady used the Stadium Series-style pants striping on the shorts here. That white kit is proof that hockey-style horizontal striping can work on a soccer kit.

Negatives: I don't like the chest striping on the dark jersey. It just awkwardly ends just before it meets the numbers. I would like to see some more daring liberties taken here. This is an opportunity to go avant-garde.

Overall: Not bad, but just not different and modern enough. (7.5/10)

New York Islanders Alternate Concept - Dylan N.

Positives: I have to give Dylan N. credit here. He's not afraid to dance with the devils of hockey design sometimes and do something different, or work with something "taboo." This logo, along with the jerseys that accompanied it in the 90s, were almost universally hated. I love them, but only in the same way I love bad sci-fi movies and the Atlanta Thrashers: they're so bad that they are cool.  This concept is executed perfectly (helmet numbers, people), and brilliantly presented. Take notice of the detail on the back of the collar. I also love that Dylan embraces some of the modern design cues of the Stadium Series jerseys from last year: the striping, the elongated numbers (which I like), the collar design, the pants striping, and the slanted numbers. I think it fits the vibe of this logo and color scheme personally.

Negatives: Of course, you will either love this or hate this. There is no other way to feel about it.

Overall: I however, love it. (9/10) COTW nomination from me!

We had a really big vote this week with not only our usual Concept of the Week, but also a vote for the 3rd Quarter vote to choose a semifinalist for Concept of the year! So it was especially important for you to vote. If you were responsible enough to do that simple thing, here is your reward. If you failed to even take 20 seconds of the time you waste everyday to send a simple vote in, take this in shame.

Also, just want to remind you to send in your logo concepts for our Fifth Year Anniversary! HJC doesn't turn five everyday, so it's a big deal!

That's all for today's post. See you all tomorrow. Same time. Same place.

Friday: Two Four Concepts

TGIF

First off, my thoughts are with all the HJC readers in the Ottawa area. Obviously, this has been a rough week for you guys and my heart goes out to the solider who was sadly killed and to the brave responders who kept the city safe. To quote Bruce Arthur: "Except for one pathetic murderous asshole, it felt like a lot of Canada was, under awful circumstances, at its best today. Proud of that"

I apologize in advance for the lateness of this post, I really do! Extremely hectic day that couldn't have been much worse. Anyways, here's the post, but again, super sorry!

No real new jersey news, hockey season has been awesome so far! What do you guys this of the Islanders? Are they for real? Will this last?

What about the Hurricanes? How long until they get their first win?

Surprises? For me, it's been Calgary! They've played very well and are looking like the team from 10 years ago. Now, will they make the playoffs? No! However, is this the start of something new....probably.

Voting! Super Duper important this week. 3rd quarter voting ends TONIGHT! COTW voting continues and the also super duper important Quad City Mallards contest continues for another week.

If you haven't heard the news, it's HJC's 5th anniversary! Help give us a 5th anniversary logo and send in your designs. Ryan may use it.

3rd Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Oct 13-19 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Quad City Mallards Jersey Competition (ends October 31st)
HJC 5th Anniversary Logo (due this week)
On to the concepts!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Houston Aeros Concepts (By: Mario A.)
Why isn't there much talk of hockey returning to Houston? The Aeros are such 70's hockey identity, but none the less, more WHA goodness from Mario. I'm a fan of this template, we haven't seen it in pro hockey since the '08 All Star Game, though I'm not sure if this is the place. Don't get me wrong, it looks decent, but it doesn't seem to be a Houston Aeros jersey. I get the idea of getting rid of the tealish blue and and third colour, but the stars, big block letters and AHL military theme would have all been good inspiration. As is, the font is the only thing that says "Houston Aeros". Along with that, the colours are not well balanced on the white jersey, and the numbers are far too down the back of the jersey and the name is too high. (5.5/10)
Denver Spurs Concepts (By: Mario A.)
I've been a fan of the Spurs look since seeing several concepts that showed the look could have worked. I may sound harsh by saying this, but, this looks lazy. There is no striping patter, just a paint bucket fill job, the numbers were done on Microsoft paint with a text font, the vector logo on the back should be the CCM or script logo. The logo on the black jersey has a weird white thing on the side, and I've seen Mario do much better. That's the biggest problem, Mario, you have so much potential and have been getting better, but this is a major step back. Don't take this as an attack, but work at it, take you time, and redo this concept. Hopefully, I review it and I get to tell you how good it is. (4/10)
Cleveland Barons Concepts (By: CPM)
Ah the Barons! Funny enough, for a team that only lasted two seasons, their identity has lasted and CPM makes a very simple but well made Barons concept. The white jersey remains relatively the same, but the red jersey swaps black for white on the yoke and cuffs. It looks better! The logo is also improved, it doesn't reek of 70's complexities and overly fancy outline of Ohio. One thing I would have changed is the numbers. I would have put the numbers in the yoke and given them a small outline. (8.25/10)
Quebec Nordiques Concepts (By: Patrik G.)
The day will come when we don't have to say "When the Nordiques return" and just "The new Nords". Until then, let's speculate! Patrik updates the Nordiques, while keeping the jerseys mostly the same. The Fleur de Lis are kept on the hem, but not on the yoke, which is an improvement. The addition of the striping fixes the one problem the Nordiques had. No longer do the arms just have cuffs and look like striped down Habs aways. The name on the back of the white jersey looks a fraction to big, and the roundel logo from the WHA days would make a decent alternate logo. (8.5/10)
Atlanta Thrashers Concept (By: Zach W.)
Seriously missing the Thrashers. Don't get me wrong, I love the Jets but Atlanta had a soft spot for me (it's the maroon). For sure the Thrashers needed a simplifying of their extensive colour scheme and eccentric jerseys, and something like this would have worked as an alternate (beats looking like the Falcons on skates). The striping manages to get all the major colours into one pattern without being overwhelming, thought the stripes are a little large not eh jerseys and high up not eh socks. The yoke shape is nice, but the shoulder patches need to be smaller and the outline to be less pixelated. The numbers and NOB are pixelated. This concept is close to being a winner, just needs some minor work. (6.25/10)
Arizona Coyotes Soccer Crossover Concepts (By: Brady S.)
Of the three soccer crossover series we've seen on HJC, Brady's has been the most direct crossover. If  Arizona were a SC instead of an HC (soccer joke), then this is most likely what they would wear, and it's pretty close to the current jerseys, neither have hem striping. Execution is solid, though I would have gone with maroon socks on the home kit. The ad on the maroon jersey (which might I add, kudos for accuracy) would be more visible and have a soccer/footie vibe if it were larger. (8.75/10)
That's the post! Once again, I apologize for the lateness, trust me, it's not going to be a regular thing (it's 7:35 in Halifax as I finish this post, I know it's two hours late). Remember to vote, seriously, I'm doing it right now. Enjoy the weekend, and watch some hockey and GO JETS!
October 23, 2014
Thursday: 2628000
Hey gang, welcome to another exciting Thursday post of HJC!
What's with that gigantic number on the title of our post? That is the amount of minutes in 5 years.  Why is that significant? Well, HJC is having its 5th Anniversary, which is extremely impressive.  Has anyone told you that they'll be "just 5 more minutes"? Imagine they said "just 2628000 minutes" instead.  That is a really, really long time.
But back to the topic at hand: HJC is looking for a "5 Year Anniversary" logo/patch, like most hockey teams would have on their jerseys for their own anniversaries.  Take a few minutes (or as many as you need) and come up with your version of the anniversary patch, submit it this week, and Ryan will pick the winning design and use it on the blog's header for the entire month of November.  That's a lot of face-time for someone's design, so you definitely don't want to miss out on this competition.
Finished your Mallards entry yet? If not, better hurry, the month is almost over!  There are some fantastic concepts (and some poor but hilariously awesome ones) submitted, and I can't wait to see who they pick!  The Mallards definitely have one of the coolest identities in minor-pro hockey, so I'm glad to see so many different takes to their look.
Last but not least, there is a very significant vote going on this week to determine the 3rd COTY semi-finalist.  The winning concept will be featured in the COTY final votes at the end of the year, so it's crucial that we all put in our two cents and vote for our favourites!
3rd Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Oct 13-19 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Quad City Mallards Jersey Competition (ends October 31st)
HJC 5th Anniversary Logo (due this week)
Concepts time!
Chicago Blackhawks - Zach W.
Yay: We start with a pair of Blackhawks concepts for the Winter Classic.  This one from Zach uses the "C" logo we're not used to seeing in the front, which right away wins points for originality.  The colours look great, and the stripes are a very nice design.  Definitely suites the old-timey look this game will need.
Nay:  The logo looks a little too big.  The stripes are a nice pattern, but the outside red stripes could to be moved out a pixel or two, and the middle stripe could be thinned out a bit.  The TV numbers have no room on the arms, and look very weak going over the stripes as they do now.
Overall: I like the overall look, but little things make this concept a miss for me.  7.6/10
Chicago Blackhawks - Tyler G.
Yay:  Our other 'Hawks concept today has a very classic look to it, being that it's pretty similar to the current uniforms, besides the off-white, logo, and lack of black cuffs.  Some people don't like "vintage white", but I love it. This uniform looks like it could have been used in 1940, and could be used today or 10 years from now.  Everything is sharply executed on this concept, and looks great.
Nay:  The problem is, I feel like the changes aren't enough from being a rip-off of their current uniforms.  I'd feel no need to buy this when their regular uniform is nearly the same thing.  Usually these types of jerseys have a modern twist of an old jersey, but this is exactly the opposite.  That's not a bad thing, but I'm just not excited about this design as I normally get with classic uniforms.  Also, what is with that green band on the inside collar?
Overall: It's hard to sell this as a unique concept, but I can't deny that it looks fantastic and would be a good option for the Winter Classic.  8.4/10
Cleveland Crusaders - Mario A.
Yay: Next is a pair of WHA concepts from Mario, the first being for the Cleveland Crusaders. Cheevers and the Crusaders (great name for a band) had a really classic look, despite using purple as their main colour.  This concept has a little more going on, but still fits the traditional look for them.  Honestly, this is probably my favourite concept by Mario so far.
Nay: The back-right arm stripe on the purple jersey is mis-coloured, it should be black, not purple.  The font isn't bad, but for this team I'd stick with a simpler block font.  The jerseys match up well, but I feel like the purple jersey has too much white.  I don't know how to perfectly fix that, and it's alright as is, but I think more black and less white would look great.
Overall: Definitely seeing some improvement in Mario's work, keep it up! 7.5/10
Cincinnati Stingers - Mario A.
Yay: Part 2 of Mario's WHA duo today belongs to the Cincinnati Stingers.  I always thought they had a cool look to them, and there are plenty of ways to revitalize their look.  Mario takes a very simple yet modern approach, with some really interesting styles on the side and the arms.
Nay: The bottom back stripe on both jerseys (the white stripe closest to the hem on the black jersey, and vice versa) looks like it just kind of starts from the side and only covers the back.  It looks OK in this form, but if one saw a side view of this jersey, that abrupt change would look very bad unless there was some sort of transition.  Not liking the contrasting shoulders, and the incomplete yellow arm stripe.
Overall:  Interesting, but I'm not really liking it as much as the previous concept.  6.8/10
Anaheim Ducks - Brady S.
Yay:  Next up is Brady with his soccer style Anaheim uniforms.  Lets be real here, the black and orange uniforms look great and aren't a huge stretch for a soccer uniform.  Their black jersey transitions well into this set and is executed very well.  But lets talk about the elephant in the room, or should I say...duck.  Despite most people putting it on their "worst jerseys ever" list, I think the colours and design look rad, and would make an awesome fan jersey.
Nay: On both sets, the number seems really close to the name, and could use some breathing room.  Moving it down a bit could fix that.  It's really hard to critique a soccer uniform for me, and I think the black kit looks very nice.  The green kit is fun and all, but unless you drew a Mighty Duck kicking a soccer ball instead of holding a hockey stick, the logo use takes away from the whole soccer thing.
Overall:  Not the greatest soccer set I've seen, but half of it is realistic, and the other half is really fun to look at.  Good work.  8/10
San Jose Sharks - Pajo94
Yay:  Come on man, Quidditch? The nerd in me can't even handle this concept.  I'm not as familiar with the standard Quidditch attire, but this looks about right, and the styles and colours are just so perfect with this outfit.  The logo works so well with the sort of classic look I'd associate Quidditch uniforms with.
Nay:  I'm not sure what the T-shirt combo is for.  I assume it's a practice uniform or for a different position.  Either way, it's kind of bland in comparison to the whole set.  And in general, I think the set needs more white.  Not much, but maybe somewhere in the stripes.
Overall:  Totally fanboy-ing over this.  I don't even know if this looks good for a Quidditch design, but I want it.  8.7/10
It could be the fact I'm a huge nerd for this kind of thing, but since it's also really well designed, I'll give Pajo94's San Jose concept my COTW nomination.
For the rest of you muggles, make sure to get your votes in for the votes going on this week, and finish up your Mallards and HJC 5th Anniversary logos.
That's it for me, thanks for reading and have a good weekend!
