Wednesday: The 30th

Instead of talking about the playoffs or a new jersey design, I want to talk about one of the most notable players in the league to wear number 30. Martin Brodeur has played his entire NHL career with the New Jersey Devils. In this day and age, seeing a player stick with one team throughout his entire career is very rare. Brodeur has had such a big impact on the game of hockey. He has won three Stanley Cups and has carried the Devils to the playoffs in almost every season of his career. The trapezoid rule is said to be in response to Brodeur's playing style, and who knows how much longer he has to play. He'll be a hall of famer for sure.

Do you want to be a part of the writing team here at HJC? Now's your chance! Click here to get all the info you'll need to apply to be a HJC Writer. The deadline to apply is May 9.

I also want to remind everyone about the HJC Meet-Up happening July 12 in Toronto. More importantly I want to remind everyone of the awesome prizes that will be raffled off during the Meet-Up. A white Rangers Lady Liberty jersey, a 2014 Team Canada jersey, and a replica Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup ring. Be a part of HJC history by going to the HJC MEET-UP page for all of the details.

Here at HJC, we have a playoff vote! This isn't something we see often here so make sure you take part! As long as you are voting for the Steel Drop Competition champion, you might as well vote for COTW as well. We are also in the middle of the Cleveland Barons Redesign Competition as well, so get your entries in before the deadline!

Before I get to today's concepts, here are the newest contest entries:

Alex J.
Phil B.

Stuart R.

Caden P.
Finally, today's concepts...
S2dio - Wien Yodels Concept
Design: Today's first concepts are S2dio's last two concepts in his European Division series. This one caught my eye as one of my favorite as it has a fun look to it in my opinion. The striping is pretty unique, and I really like the crest. These remind me of a lot of some AHL St. Patrick's Day uniforms and I think those always look good.
Score: 8.5/10 - This concept is one of my favorite in the series, I guess I'll start today's post with my COTW Nomination!
S2dio - Zurich Swiss Blades Concept
Design: Congratulations to S2dio on completing this series! Every concept has looked great and I can't wait to see what he has in store next. This concept reminds me of a red Nordiques jersey. I really like the striping incorporating the Swiss flag. The logo that has been slightly modified from the original version looks very good on this concept. Once again, great job on this series! I know everyone enjoyed all of the concepts.
Score: 8/10 - A very clean concept, but I wish that the numbers would also follow the contour of the template's shading and folds.
Josiah B. - New York Rangers Home Concept
Design: We have seen some of Josiah's concepts this week, and I would like to personally welcome him to the HJC community! I really like the idea that Josiah is conveying in this concept. I think a New York City themed jersey would be a great idea for the Rangers. The color scheme looks great, but I think the numbers and "NYC" script should have a red outline to add some detail. I also think that the "New York" on the hem stripe is unnecessary and very hard to see.
Score: 5/10 - I know that this is one of Josiah's first concepts so I am going to give him some tips so that he can be a COTW contender in no time. I personally think that the numbers and crest are too large and the nameplate is too small. The number on the right breast is also too small. Make sure that the numbers and crest are also centered on the jersey. Also, check out the tutorial page. It has some really helpful and interesting information.
Josiah B. - New York Rangers Away Concept
Design: This design uses the same striping as the Rangers Winter Classic jersey. I think that using the phrase "Empire State" on the jersey would be pretty cool. It's kind of like the NBA's "Rip City" or "Motor City" jerseys. I think this jersey has a lot of potential, and I like bringing the Winter Classic striping back.
Score: 5.5/10 - The nameplate is about the right proportion to the number, but both are still a bit large. Refer to my comments above. I think Josiah is on the right track though.
Stephen T. - Czech Republic Concept
Design: As always, Stephen's international concepts are much better than the ones Nike unveiled. I really like the white jersey. I think that the arm striping and yoke make for a really good looking jersey. The thin number font is really cool on the back of this concept. The red jersey looks a little bit plain and could use something to add some detail.
Score: 7/10 - There are a few minor errors that detract from this concept. The crests are a little bit off center, and I think the nameplate could be a touch larger.
Stephen T. - Germany Concept
Design: I think that Stephen's second concept is a lot more interesting. I like that the white socks are very cool in that they make up the Germany flag. I like the arm striping that also makes up the Germany flag. The shoulder yoke looks very good on this concept as well.
Score: 7/10 - The crests are also off center on this concept. However, I do like this concept a lot.
Tristian M. - Boston Bruins Alternate Concept
Design: Ever since I attended a Bruins game, I have really liked the Bruins jerseys. Boston could really use a yellow alternate. The arm striping is a very modern approach to a Bruins jersey, and I think it would look really good with the classic home & away. The last time CCM was branded on an NHL jersey, the league was full of many classic designs. CCM has since rebranded, and a return to the NHL jerseys could be great way to implement a modern look like this one.
Score: 7.5/10 - Great concept! I'd drop the white on the pants though. I think a yellow stripe would look better.
Mike S. - Edmonton Oilers Steel Drop Concept
Design: I remember when the steel drop jersey first came out, as one of my friends had one personalized. I think this concept is really cool, as it meshes a classic striping pattern with a modern crest and some piping. The pants stripe is my favorite part of this concept. The number and name font is also very cool on this concept.
Score: 6/10 - I think the striping at the wrists is not necessary. It makes the sleeves look busy and distracted from the rest of the striping. I really like that the same striping is continued throughout the jersey, stripes, and pants. It really brings the whole concept together.
Jake88 - Bemidji State Beavers Concept
Design: Bemidji State's hockey jerseys look like classic college hockey jerseys with name arched across the front & a number below. Jake gets a little bit more creative with this concept. The wordmark looks great on the front of a jersey. The striping is very cool too. I like how it is not symmetrical on the white jersey. It reminds me of the Stars new away jersey.
Score: 8/10 - Great concept! The striping is unique, and these jerseys would look great against other college teams.
David P. - Los Angeles Kings Alternate Concept
Design: When the Kings unveiled their Stadium Series jerseys this season, the idea of a gray alternate for the Kings have swept through the HJC community. I think that a gray alternate would be the perfect opportunity to bring back the crown logo as a primary crest. The jersey is a very modern design, and I don't feel that the strings on the collar really fit the look. Other than that, this is a good looking design.
Score: 6/10 - Although this is a cool design, there are a lot of items that are pixelated. The number, name, crest, and wordmark are all pixelated. Try larger quality images in the future, because this concept is on the right track to being great.
Christian L. - NHL All Star Game Concept
Design: The NHL played a red vs. blue game for the first time in recent history. I think that the All Star Game would look a lot better if it was a red vs. blue game. I think the blue vs. white/red looks awkward, and Christian's concept looks like a great replacement for the NHL's current All Star jerseys. The All Star Game has always been an opportunity for the NHL to experiment with different designs and they have used their opportunity quite well. The NHL All Star Game has produced a couple terrible designs, but many of the jerseys have been very innovative. The diagonal striping is a very new design feature and I really like the white on the hem.
Score: 8.5/10 - I love when professional sports experiment with new uniform concepts at the All Star game. This would make for a great looking game! The blue is even a lighter shade of blue so that there wouldn't be any trouble viewing the game on TV.

That's all for today! Don't forget to vote, and best of luck to your team in the playoffs!

Tuesday: First Round Winding Down

Hey Hey Folks! Hope you're all having a good Tuesday so far! I know I am as over the weekend my Blackhawks got rid of them pesky Blues. The Bruins Canadiens, and Ducks also finished their series as well as the Penguins last night. AND we're being treated to some Game 7's. The Wild forced a game 7 which I didn't expect at all, and the Kings looked dead in their series but came from a 3-0 deficit to take the series to the limit.

But you know what else is cool? Going to Toronto for the HJC Meet Up this summer.  You know what's even COOLER!? The prizes that will be raffled off. If you didn't see the prizes that Ryan showed off this weekend go check out the Weekend Update. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on that White Lady Liberty jersey. mmmmmm.....

Speaking of Barons......

Michael S.

Will J.

And now normal daily concepts galore!

Boston Bruins Alternate Jersey Concept - Josiah B.
Newcomer Josiah shows off his Boston alternate. Pretty much the current alternate with the logo swapped out for bear claw marks and a number scratched into the back. The striping is pretty good and clean, normally not something we see out of first timers. The scratch and the number is a bit crude. I'm sure there's a font that has a scratchy look to it that could have been used to look more professional. As for the scratch logo, I wanna see more than three yellow lines. Add some depth, as if there's something behind the marks, a bear or a claw perhaps. A logo on the shoulders and TV numbers would help fill out this otherwise "bare" jersey. Also, NHL rules require names on the back of jerseys so that would have to be done as well.

Rating: 4/10

Montreal Canadiens Alternate Jersey Concept - Josiah B.
Josiah designs an alternate based around the home jersey but void of any logos. The chest stripe now has a wordmark placed inside with a number above. Personally I don't care for numbers on the front of a jersey, wordmarks aren't my favorite either, but when placed inside of a chest stripe I don't think they look half bad. I think the wordmark here is too long though and the ends would be hard to see when the jersey is being worn, and red letters are hard to see against the blue background, a white outline would help. The most interesting part of the jersey here is the back number. I think the only way to get that effect would be sublimation. That number style would be really hard to read on a moving hockey player. Its odd how the white outline of the stripe is missing. The name seems too small while both the name and number look slightly off center.

While the execution could use some work, Josiah definitely has an eye for out of the ordinary designs, which is not a bad thing. Keep it up Josiah!

Rating: 4.5/10

Anaheim Ducks Concept - Alex J.
Alex gives us a concept that seems like the most simple fix for the Ducks set, and also what they may be doing for next season. The current alt takes place of the home and a white version is the new away. An orange version of the current jerseys with the classic Mighty Ducks logo takes over as the new alternate jersey. Nothing we haven't seen before but it's always nice to see it all together and done nicely.

Rating: 6.5/10

Quebec Nordiques Alternate Jersey Concept - TG
TG's Nordiques alternate has striping that appears to be inspired by the logo. The look overall is very pointy and ferocious, matching the logo. The sublimated fleur de lis is a neat touch but it might be a bit much to be used throughout the whole torso.

Rating: 7/10

St. Petersburg Anchors (NHL European Series) - S2dio
You know, some sort of NHL affiliated league in Europe doesn't sound too far fetched. A division or conference playing in the North American NHL does though... at least to me. The main logo here gives off a very old timey look and the striping here adds to that, especially with the color scheme. An all gold jersey I'd be very sketchy about. I think it looks better laid out like this than actually worn, but who knows, someone's gotta try it. I really like the white jersey here but I don't know about the gold numbers, I'd go red.

Rating: 7/10

Moscow Reds (NHL European Series) - S2dio
The Reds look like they would fit right in with any Original 6 team though. I think the color scheme used is pretty awesome here and the color balance between the two jerseys is great. I want to see some sort of red in the logo on the white jersey, maybe in place of the white, although, maybe you tried that and it looked too dark overall.

Rating: 8/10

Prince Albert Raiders Concept (WHL) - Scott M.
I think the Raiders new logo used here is a bit awkward. I know what its supposed to be, a P and an A, but I feel it could have been executed better. But the biggest problem with the way its used now by the team is the jerseys its used on. The current set is very modern and bleh. This set is way more toned down and I think pairs well with a complicated, more out there logo like this one. Overall, everything here looks really good, but I'm unsure about black numbers on a green jersey.

Rating: 8/10

Argentina - Stephen T.
Stephen gives us a soccer themed hockey jersey for the Argentinians. I don't think filling in the yoke and top of the sock with blue on one uniform makes it any different than the other. I think the "dark" jersey should just be filled in with blue with a different striping pattern. Vertical stripes like this would probably be way too busy for a hockey jersey anyway.

Rating: 6/10

Barcelona FC - Stephen T.
The top jersey here is recognizable, even for me and I don't even watch soccer. The bottom one not so much, but i looked it up and Barcelona's other jersey is yellow and red, not blue. I don't know the reasoning for using it here. Or its this jersey right here, but I wouldn't know. I'd honestly rather see the gradient jersey pasted onto a hockey jersey than the vertical stripes. The numbers on the back seem off center as well.

Rating: 6/10

Borrusia - Stephen T.
Hmm, familiar. I can't tell if I'm recognizing this jersey from a bumble bee or the two previous concepts. Like the Argentina jerseys, I don't think filling in the yoke and sock with yellow really makes the bottom jersey any different really. Like the Barcelona set, I couldn't find a black jersey with yellow stripes, but a black jersey with a yellow gradient from the bottom. The numbers on the back are extremely hard to read. I like the font choice but nothing is setting the font from the stripes.

Rating: 5/10

Ghana - Stephen T.
Hmm.. Again these look oddly familiar. The red and yellow is used on a jersey by Ghana but with a diagonal line cutting the top of the stripes off, that would have looked neat here and helped set it apart from the other 3 Stephen concepts today. The candy cane jersey isn't even a thing they use. Back numbers look off center as well.

Rating: 5/10

If Stephen wanted to try and pull of A vertical striped jersey with ONE team then maybe it could work. But 4 different teams wearing the same jersey with different colors plugged in is not creative. If any of these teams played each other it'd be a trainwreck. Especially the teams using yellow. Other sports uniforms tend to be way more boring and plain compared to hockey jerseys. The fun part about people making hockey jerseys for teams in other sports is coming up with something new and not mimicking a jersey straight up. Take something unique from a jersey, or something that sets theirs apart and apply it to a hockey jersey. Get creative. Especially don' t make every jersey the same thing, just colored differently.

Ok, I don't wanna seem like this is me trying to be mean and uncalled for, but this is something that's been happening for weeks now and it's been pointed out here before and nothing's really changed... Stephen has everyone beat in quantity, I wouldn't be surprised if he's got the most concepts under his belt and is ahead of the second place guy by double digits. And for awhile, he was churning out some good looking stuff comparable to some of the best on the site, but lately he's sacrificing quality and creativity to get more in quicker. As seen here, 4 concepts on ONE post, that's pretty incredible, but they're all almost the same jersey. And a lot of times there seems to be a few execution errors, somethings small like a stripe out of place or the numbers off center, or something huge like the back of a jersey looking completely different than the front. This isn't necessarily a rant against just Stephen. There's a lot of concepts on a weekly basis that come in and seem uninspired, or that a concept was just made to be made.

Again, this is meant as constructive criticism. I don't want what I said to be taken the wrong way, but I'm also not the only one who thinks it.

Anyway, that's it for today's post. Hate for it to end on such a sour note... so here... TSN did a thing with Luongo and its fantastic because he's a treasure.

Check it out!!!!

Monday: To the Land Down Under.

Okay, I think it's time for a break from the top 3 lists.

Welcome to the HJC Monday Post!

Here are your Cleveland Barons Redesign entries for today:

Christian L.

This week, voting is at an all time importance. This week, we have a playoff vote, a rare occurince on HJC, but one you should take advantage of. As Billy Mays said, but if you vote right now, within the next 5 days because you know we can't do this all week, we'll include free shipping for your Buffalo Sabres 2014 Stanley Cup Champions t-shirt.

*Unfortunately due to an "unintentional warehouse fire" this shirt is only available in XXXXXS

I said last week I'd give my thoughts on the playoffs, so here it goes.

BOS vs. DET: I picked Detroit, and thought maybe their late season charge would give the Wings energy to beat the big bad Bruins....guess not.

MTL Vs. TB: No shock (no pun intended) that Tampa lost without Ben Bishop, but the only sweep of the first round was not the series anyone thought it would be

PIT Vs. CLB: Entertaining, but neither team has really dominated the other so far...Fleury.....

PHI Vs. NYR: Another close series, but look out for Steve Mason or King Henrik to be the difference maker, I'm rooting for the fellow Oakvillian Mason (he went to my rival high school)

ANA Vs. DAL: Too bad the Stars BLEW IT!

LA Vs. SJ: The Kings weren't going down without a fight

COL Vs. MIN: Matt Cooke is a COTTONHEADED NINNY MUGGIN'! Also, this has been a battle of goalies, a Vezina contender and a future Vezina winner (take your pick on who's who)

STL Vs. CHI: The Blues were too banged up to take this one without some serious luck (Though I will root for Alex Steen, since his father is a Winnipeg legend)
Last week, I forgot to mention the HJC Meet Up! Big Mistake! Not only is it the premier event of the summer in Toronto, but there are some awesome raffle prizes that are being raffled off. A White Lady Liberty jersey, one of the rarest alternates in NHL history, a replica Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup Ring, and other prizes yet to be reviled!

Submit your ticket form to get your tickets and if you plan on ever traveling to Toronto, now is as good a time as ever. If you can't make it but want in on the prizes, raffle tickets will be available soon via Pay Pal.

On to the Concepts

Peoria Rivermen Concept (By: Mike S.)

First up, a HUGE congratulations to Mike for completing his SPHL alternate series. Mike's concepts were sent in as they were done, which is why the series lasted longer, but completing a series is always tough work, and each concept in this series was full of creativity, no two concept looked the same.

I have the AHL Rivermen home jersey, and anything is better than that. Aside from the new logo and beautiful yellow numbers, the best thing about this alternate is the rivets/portholes in the striping. It may be a little close to the arms and hem, but the rivets add that minor league character typical of semi-pro hockey. Aside from the proximity to the edge of the jersey, The execution is solid. (8.5/10)

Mississippi River Kings Concepts (By: Caz W.)

From the images I could find, the River Kings have worn jerseys with giant cartoon crowns for striping, a pattern similar to the New York Rangers Winter Classic jerseys, and the Avs template, so a variety of good, not so good, and BLAH.Using black and darkening the gold match the green very well, and the striping pattern is simple enough, but not boring. The shoulder patch, I don't know what it is about it but it looks more like a map logo, maybe using the crown would be more fitting. Also, the number, which are the Stars numbers, could use an outline. (8/10)

Team Netherlands 2014 World Cup Concepts (By: Stephen T.)

One things that's awesome about the Netherlands is that they usually wear orange and black, a great colour combination. First off, this striping pattern should familiar, from Stephen's Germany set from a couple of weeks ago. That's a serious down vote, not even adding a hem stripe, only changing the name on the back, logo and nothing else. Before sending concepts in, try to be original, it's always great to improve on old concepts, but, improve on it, don't just change the colours and call it new. The design is okay, but the blue blends into the orange, the jersey looks okay, but would be way better. (4/10)

Team Australia Concept (By: Stephen T.)

From the land down under, no not New Zealand, Australia! Using a flag as a striping pattern works for simple countries like Germany, Austria and Canada, but Australia.....It kind of works. The stars on the arm are decent enough, but there's a a very empty bottom of the jersey, which needs to be fixed. Some sort of striping patter will do wonders. A side note, Australia wears green and yellow in international contest, so maybe seeing that would make this jersey seem less....bland. (5.5/10)

Team Germany 2014 World Cup Concepts (By: Stephen T.)

So Stephen really likes to make Germany international concepts, and seeing how they are a soccer powerhouse, it's fitting. The away jersey is a recoloured version of Stephen's Team America World Cup concept, with the numbers moved. Again, design something new, if you want to have a chest stripe, that's fine, but do something different. The away jersey, despite using colours as the German team would do, the lack of yellow or white makes the red and black look too dark. (5/10)

Helsinki Sailors Concepts (By: S2dio)

Ah the NHL Europe division, the day that comes about, I'll be happy, after Quebec City, Hartford, Kansas City, Las Vegas and Hamilton get a team, it's likely. The logo reminds me of a certain hotel chain's S, but it's different enough that jokes wouldn't be made. I'm impressed in how good baby blue, black and gold look together, it really works, just wish the away jersey had some baby blue one it. Not that it looks bad, far from it, and it is typical of European teams to do this, but none the less, well executed and very creative, I look forward to more entries in this series (8.5/10)

Oslo Bears Concepts (By: S2dio)

Oslo is beautiful city, and what with Norway emerging as a hockey power, the NHL in the Red and Blue wouldn't be too far out there. The logo is from Morgan State, which is one of the best bear logos in all of sports, but maybe some minor editing would make it more unique to the team. The striping pattern screams Euro, like mix of the Jets and Blues. The white jersey needs a little more blue, maybe making the arm band blue  rather than red. (8.25/10)

Calgary Flames Concept (By: Steven G.)

The "medal" design is not used often, but its one way to save a jersey with a circular logo from being boring, and of all the circle logos ever, this is the one worth saving. The striping looks awesome, and I can see that when the arms are bent or at the side, the arms well link with the angled chest stripe, which is a cool effect. The hem is a little bland, maybe adding a little yellow and white will fix that, same with the numbers. (9/10)

Peterborough Petes Concepts (By:  Kaner88)

The new Petes jerseys look amazing, and it was smart of the team to keep their classic jersey as an alternate, but Kaner88, who's execution has gotten much better over the last little while, removes all black from the set. The striping is a great blend of the past and what the Ps introduced, but there are a couple of execution notes that drag this concept down. The bottom of the white jersey should be maroon on both sides, not just the front, and the stitching (gray) should stop at the hem striping. Also, if the yoke ends on the back in the middle, then the interior of the collar should be the same colour as that. Great ideas, but require some fine tuning . (7.5/10)

Team Sweden Concepts (By: Alan H.)

Just like Alan's Team USA set, I'll review these as one set and critique the differences. Both jerseys remain relatively faithful to the Sweden jerseys of the past decade, adding white on the olympic jersey certainly works well ont eh yellow jersey, but maybe blends in too much with the yellow on the blue jersey. The logo is awesome, and I love the flags on the crown and where the crummy fake laces would be on the olympic jersey. The only problemI have with the set is the helmets, which would look better if they matched the colour of the jersey but to save money, teams use one colour, and blue would work best. OLY (8.75/10) WC (9/10)

That's the post, everybody! Enjoy the rest of the first round of the playoffs, as next week, we'll be talking about my thoughts on the 2nd round! Also, next week, we'll return to the countdowns, top 3 minor league names (AHL/ECHL/SPHL/CeHL) from the world of semi pro hockey. Remember to vote, get your Barons entries in by Friday and SIGN UP FOR THE MEET UP! I'm Jets96, Go Jackets Go, see you  next Monday (maybe).

In the Oilers Steel Drop Competition we have a tie for 1st!

Full Results

I normally break ties with the "most 2nd place votes, most 3rd places votes, etc..." However, I don't think it's fair to determine a winner here when it's this close. So, we're going to have a playoff vote between Kevin P. & Matt M. Click the Oilers banner at the top of the page to see the two concepts. Voting will run until the end of Friday. Send the votes to the competition email.

I've asked the writers to hound you about joining us for the HJC Meet-Up in Toronto on July 12. If you want to, then click on the Meet-Up banner at the top of the page. Perhaps it's not for you, or perhaps you're on the fence. Maybe this will change your mind... The big raffle prize will be a white New York Rangers Lady Liberty jersey!!!

As of today, the other prizes are a Team Canada 2014 Olympic jersey and a replica Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup ring.

More prizes will be announced right up until July 12.

Those who attend the HJC Meet-Up will automatically receive two tickets into every prize draw!!! For those who can't attend the Meet-Up, you will be able to purchase raffle tickets online through PayPal in the very near future.

For all the perks of attending the HJC Meet-Up, click on the banner at the top of the page or go to the HJC MEET-UP tab.

It's time to start a new competition. This week's comp will be a Cleveland Barons ReDesign. Click the Barons banner at the top of the page or go to the BARONS COMP tab to read all of the rules. Entries are due at the end of Friday, but most of you probably already knew that.

Here are a couple of templates provided by HJC readers...

Jake88 has resized his glove and helmet template as well as making it Paint friendly. This will be available on the TEMPLATES page.

Derek K. has provided a Nike Swift template in vector format (AI). That download will be available on the TEMPLATES page as well.

The new COTW nominees for the week of April 21-27 have been posted on the side of the page. Click on that banner or go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab to see the concepts nominated. Votes are due by the end of Friday.

We have 25 people involved in the HJC Playoff Pool. As series end I try to update the standings. You can see the current standings right now by clicking the PLAYOFF POOL banner on the side of the page. Standings include both Montreal's and Boston's series wins.

For those 25 people, be ready to get your 2nd round picks in as soon as the 1st round is over. Not before the 1st round is over, but AFTER it is over. 2nd round picks will be due before the puck drops for the first game of the 2nd round. If you're not in the pool right now you can enter for the last 3 rounds. It would take a monumental effort to win, but it's still fun.

Sometime within the next week I want to clean up the LEAVE AN IDEA page. Meaning I want to delete some old comments and some comments that have become concepts. If you need an idea go there now before some of the comments are gone.
