Thursday: Happy Halloween

I know that NHL jerseys are the most common jerseys to design, and it's understandable.  But I have to say it's a little bit of a letdown seeing only 2 concepts for today's post for non-NHL teams, and one of them is from me.

I'm not trying to nag or anything, I just think it's way cooler when I get to review teams that aren't dead obvious to anyone who reads this.  Sometimes researching the teams I review is the fun part.

So that's my rant for today. I'd feel like beating a dead horse if I reviewed the Flames 3rd jerseys.  But for the record, it's a pretty cool Walmart knock-off, and I'd give it a 7/10.

I heard no objections to my "yay or nay" review style from last week, so I'll try it out again this week. We have tons of concepts to look at today, but first: VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

Today's COTY Logo Entries:

S2DIO-

**********************************************************************************

Anaheim Ducks Concept - Caleb F.

Yay:  It seems to be a badly kept secret that the Ducks will go with an orange jersey for their Stadium Series game vs. Los Angeles. Assuming that were true, this wouldn't be a bad way to go.  I couldn't see this as a full-time jersey, without confusion from Flyers fans, but it would make an excellent special jersey or even a full-time 3rd (better than what they have currently IMO). Orange is a good look for the Ducks. The logo looks like a nice retro jersey, with a perfectly recoloured duck that we all know and love.

Nay: For a 3rd jersey, the design is somewhat simple, but maybe that's what gives this jersey a nice retro feel, without going overboard.  The yoke could be a little more interesting.  I'm also not sure about the white name on the bright orange jersey, I'd either stick to black or look more retro with a black name-bar and white text (or vice versa).

Overall: I like it. Execution was pretty good, and while it could be made a bit more interesting in parts, it's an awfully good fit for a retro-ish 3rd. 8/10

Ottawa Senators Heritage Classic Concept - Matt R.

Yay: For another jersey headed for the outdoors, here's Matt's Ottawa jersey. I love the barber-pole look, highly original for the NHL.  I really like the arm design, and the execution on the jersey and equipment is done pretty much perfectly.

Nay: A few things. Might be just me, but the font doesn't look all too retro on these jerseys. It would work well for a typical NHL jersey, but I feel it's a bit of a miss here. I like the striping throughout the jersey, but I feel like the barber-poles on the yoke is a bit busy and unnecessary.  I like yokes on jerseys, but this might be one time I'd leave it out.  Not as much of a "nay", more like a suggestion, but I'd probably put their nice shield secondary logos on the shoulder patches.

Overall: I'm not getting the full retro vibes like I get from their current 3rd, but this is a good attempt of a white version of it. I'd buy it. 7.5/10

Team South Korea Concept - TG

Yay: The only non-NHL jersey I'll actually review today, TG gives us his take on Team South Korea. Their current jerseys, although cool for international jerseys, feels like a Pepsi rip-off. This on the other hand is a much more traditional jersey that suits Korea well. The striping pattern is unique, and while I have a couple slight problems with it (see below), it's nothing too crazy and it looks rather cool.

Nay: First, the aforementioned stripes: I don't get why you need the bottom stripe underneath the arms.  I think it would look better and less busy if the stripes just went all the way around. Also, I really don't see the need for black in the jersey. It looks decent on these jerseys as part of the striping and equipment, but black isn't really part of Korea's colour theme. If you wanted to use any colour other than red, white, and blue, then historically they tend to use a light blue. I don't really like how the numbers look, especially on the white jersey. The red and blue create so much contrast that it's not exactly nice to look at.

Overall: I really do like these jerseys. And with a bit of luck, and some decision making by the IIHF, you might see South Korea in the Olympics against the best in the world. I'd rather them wear this than their Pepsi counterparts. 7.8/10

Vancouver Canucks Concept - Zack M.

Yay: Alright, I'll warn you ahead of time that there are more than a few "nays" to this jersey. But that doesn't mean this isn't a good concept. I would more than welcome a green Vancouver 3rd with this logo and design into their jersey set.

Nay: The biggest problem here for me is the colours. The green is right (I think), but if you're going to design a jersey, the colours of the jersey generally match that of the logo. The blue stripes and yoke should match the blue on the logo, and the middle stripes should probably be white instead of grey (or if you wanted, you can recolour the logo to match your jersey, but in this case I don't recommend it). The name is a little big, and should be closer to the yoke, the number should be closer to the center of the jersey, the TV numbers and captaincy letter should be a bit bigger, the logo should be smaller, and if you're going to include equipment, try to make it a little bigger so the details you work so hard to put in them are noticeable.

Overall: I hope all of those "nays" don't discourage you, this is a great idea and a good start to a concept.  It needs lots of work, but doing all of the little things right would make this a dandy of a concept.  5/10

Colorado Avalanche Concept - David P.

Yay:  The first of David's concepts for today, we get to see a full set of the Colorado Avalanche. The main stripes, although simple, are a nice look for Colorado, who I always thought would benefit from a more college/traditional look.  The font choice is accurate, and the colours/outlines of the numbers are done well, something which is surprisingly difficult when designing a jersey.

Nay: I can live with the main set of a jersey to have the same striping, I prefer that actually.  But the 3rd jersey should be a totally new look, not just a recolour of the main set. David makes a 3rd and 4th jersey, which are both just recoloured versions of the main set, which is pretty basic to begin with. The black jersey feels the most unnecessary, while the blue jersey's colours seem pretty cool for a 3rd. The striping is uneven in some spots, like the middle arm stripe not being quite centred in the main stripe. TV numbers are also essential for a concept wanting full marks. One more thing, I know you did this for your other concept, but always have your name or some ID on your image.

Overall: They look like believable Colorado jerseys, but there's nothing too exciting here, especially in the 3rd and 4th jerseys. 6/10

San Jose Sharks 3rd Jersey Concept - Matt R.

Yay: Matt gives us another concept today, this time giving us a 3rd jersey for the Sharks. I never understood why orange had to be introduced to the Sharks colour scheme, but it fits if the logo has an orange background like this concept does. Their current 3rd is a boring recolour of the Shark's current main set, which is clean enough, but pretty boring on it's own. This concept at least has some striping, some colour, some originality, and it uses a Sharks logo we don't see often.

Nay: I'm not sure what the proper fix for this would be, but the white numbers and name look a little distracting on the jersey, since there is barely any white on the rest of the jersey or logo. The logo is an awkward shape to work with, but it does take up a lot of space on the front, so I would probably try to shrink it down just a little bit.

Overall: I didn't give Matt's Ottawa jersey a whole lot of love, but this concept is a different story. This jersey is exciting and different, but simple and clean enough to fit within the NHL's growing-conservative look. 8.5/10 and my COTW nom

Chicago Blackhawks Concept - Scott D.

Yay: Scott gives us his Chicago concept, which would probably go well as a 3rd or Stadium Series jersey. The crest of the jersey gives this the classic 30's Chicago look, while keeping the more-refined logo. The secondary logo on the shoulder patch has been recoloured, and looks spot on. The font choice is a standard, classic font, which a jersey like this needs.

Nay: I like the idea of the chest stripes, and the striping pattern in general, but it feels too busy and uneven. I think taking out the bottom black and red stripe, leaving a red-black-white-red pattern, would be a huge boost to the look of the jersey. It would also help the number stand out more, which the number itself is fine, but there is too much going on behind it to make it easily noticeable. I'm also not sure how much I like the pants design. The stripe down is probably okay, but the stripe at the bottom is probably unnecessary, unless you made it a little more subtle. Not sure on that one.

Overall: It's a good, classic look for the Blackhawks, and different from what they already have as a retro 3rd. I'd be more than okay with seeing this in the outdoors this spring in Chicago. 7.8/10

Ottawa Senators Concept - David P.

Yay: David gives us another go-round of concepts, this time giving us an Ottawa set. First off, bonus points for including a name on this set. The striping pattern is something that seems to suit Ottawa from their current look.  It's a little more busy, but not too busy so that it takes away from the jersey. Ottawa was always a flashy, modern looking team, and I'd love to see them keep that style with these jerseys. I like the use of the alternate logo as the main logo here. The black 3rd, although just a recolour of the main set, is busy and colourful enough that it can enjoy it's own style, unlike the Avalanche jerseys above.

Nay: Again, all of these jerseys are just recoloured versions of each other, which shows a bit of a lack in originality, especially when dealing with 3rd jerseys. But as I said, in this case that isn't much of an issue, as the black jersey looks like a good stand-alone jersey anyways.  The only major flaw I see in these jerseys is a lack of TV numbers.

Overall: This jersey set, although keeping the same formula as the Avalanche concept above, shows much more effort, design ability, and is overall just a better looking concept. I'd keep their current 3rd, but wouldn't be upset if this main set became official, with TV numbers of course. 7.5/10

Buffalo Sabres Concept - Dylan W.

Yay: Is Hodgson now the "A" with Vanek gone? Or was this just a random use of a name? No design implications, I'm just curious. I don't see Ott as Captain material, neither is Hodgson, but he is potentially their next franchise player, so I wouldn't be surprised. Anyways, Dylan gives us his Buffalo redesign, which takes Buffalo over that last "recolourizing" step to renewing their classic look. There's nothing here that a hockey-historian hasn't seen before between the 70's and the mid 90's, but the execution here looks fantastic. I'd really love to see Buffalo in these colours again.

Nay: There isn't anything I can nitpick about for execution errors. As usual Dylan is a detail perfectionist. However, I don't notice anything here that is a new design from their original set as mentioned earlier. Going retro is definitely the look Buffalo should go for; but from a design aspect, there isn't anything new here, besides the name.

Overall: It's a wonderful looking design, and Dylan really brings new life to this old jersey, but it's still an old jersey. 8.2/10

Minnesota Wild 3rd Jersey Concept - SG-94

Yay: Steven gives us a nice red 3rd jersey for the Wild. The Wild still have their red home jerseys, with this crest, but I would like to see them take a more green approach for their main set (as seen in their new away jersey), and stick with a red 3rd. This would be a good start to that. It keeps the red and green look we know and love from the wild, without looking too Christmas-y. It's a nice, traditional looking set, with a striping pattern that is basic, but not totally generic.

Nay: While the jersey doesn't look as Christmas-y, the green pants would probably take it to that point. I'm also not sure how I feel about the stripes. Yes, I like how traditional and different they are, but I don't know if I totally like the stripe being uncentered, leaving more space on one side than the other, if that makes any sense.

Overall: This would be a great 3rd jersey if the Wild didn't have a red primary jersey already. But if they were to fix that, this would be a good look for them. 8/10

Hawthorne Force Concept - William B. (me)

Alright, so now it's your turn. This of course is my entry to the Hawthorne PD Force Contest we had a little while ago here at HJC. I made this in a little bit of a rush, and probably spent more time on the logo and not enough on the jersey. I wanted to give them the Anaheim Ducks look, because of Hawthorne's proximity to Anaheim. I knew I had to use a deep "police" blue, so I used that as a good excuse to dish out some double-blue style (my personal favourite colour scheme). My favourite part is the logo, although I would make "Hawthorne" stand out more, and get rid of the curved lines running through "FORCE". This would probably never pass as a pro jersey, but I though this design would look pretty BA for any kid that got the opportunity to wear this.

But that is just my look at it, I'd love to know how you feel about it. I rant and nitpick at all of your concepts, you all deserve a shot at mine. Looking back at this, I wish I gave it more time and love, but I'd give it an 8/10.

*********************************************************************************************

So there goes another post. I'd love to see your comments related to my concept, any other concepts I reviewed, my "yay or nay" writing style, or anything that suits your fancy. Speaking of suits, I thought about being Don Cherry for Halloween, but didn't have the time to find a good* suit. I hope you all have a good, safe Halloween, and have a good weekend. Thanks for reading.

Wednesday: Flames New Sweater, Hot or Not?

Hey everyone! So I'm sure everyone's seen the Flames' new alternate jersey, but if not, I don't blame ya, it hasn't really been talked about on the site. Now that it's been officially released I would be glad to share my opinion on the jersey.

Before that though. Go vote, right now, literally go vote now. You are LITERALLY, not allowed to read the rest of today's post until you go email your vote to Ryan. What are you voting for you ask? Well let me tell you.....

COTY logo entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

That second thing isn't a vote but it's equally important.

Ok enough silliness, all business now.....

Sportslogos.net
The first thing I noticed from this graphic that was difficult to see in the leaks was the pointed yoke. That's the third new yoke pattern we've seen this year (Others being Carolina and Dallas). I wonder if the addition to points, which were originally thought to be "impossible" in the Reebok Edge system, means that the Av's classic jerseys could be revived. Also seen here are some arm stripes that don't go all the way around, a script font that includes the primary logo (a la Buffalo), and a beautiful new logo for the shoulders.

Flames Website

The pointed yoke isn't seen so easily on the jersey itself as it is in the graphic. But the jersey doesn't look half bad. I don't love the jersey, but I also don't hate it. It's in the middle for me. Very average jersey that could be better but it could also be way better. One thing I think could be changed is swapping the Flames' "C" with the new circle logo in the main crest. I think it's odd to have the "Calgary" and the "C" together. The number font also looks a little too modern to be paired with a script logo that gives off a vintage feel to the jersey.

The new logo, that's featured on the shoulders, also looks very sharp. It definitely doesn't fit in with the rest of the Flames' brand, which at this point really only features the "C" logo and to a lesser extent the assistant captain's "A". The new logo doesn't fit into that fiery, Flames' brand but being that it's on an "alternate" jersey is great.

Overall, I give the jersey a 7/10. Very average. Nothing outside of that new logo catches my attention as being really good.

Alright, now that that's behind us, let's take a look at today's Logo Contest entries.

And now...............today's normal concepts.........

Boston Bruins Alternate Jersey - Brady S
Brady gives the Bruins a gold third jersey, something that should be done, but loses the spoked B in favor of a throwback spokeless B. I rather like it. One could argue that this jersey is too plain or boring, but being an Original 6 team, the B's can get away with such a simple look. The rounded nameplate is odd to me and the numbers on the back should be bigger so they fill out that back panel better.

Rating: 8/10 - Simple and straightforward design that works for an Original 6 team.

Buffalo Sabres Alternate Jersey - Brady S.
Brady also has the Sabres taking on a new yellow alternate. Meant to replace their current atrocity. I feel like this jersey pulls off the basic look their new jersey was trying to pull off way better than what they ended up with. Normally I don't like side panels but I'm not totally against these ones. I like the "sword blade" going down the arms, it looks a lot better when used to outline an arm length yoke. I'm not too keen on the socks though. Don't know what else you could do with them but I don't care for the white line, maybe just make it straight.....

Rating: 8/10 - Make the numbers bigger on the back and lose the rounded nameplate and that takes care of every major problem here.

Quebec Nordiques Concept - Christian L.
Christian suggests the Nordiques rock a baby blue sweater with some vintage white for good measure. I like the way the colors look together. The jersey we see right here is a good starting point. It could go further and look better. It would be nice to see the numbers, both back and tv. I'm not sold on the logo choice either. Execution error that should be fixed, the thin red line on the arms floats off the "white" stripe on the front of the jersey but on the back is hugs the top of it.

Rating: 5/10 - The jerseys off to a good start, I like the colors as well as the striping. Fix the execution errors and finish the jersey and this could look really sharp.

Team Canada Concept - David P.
Pretty straightforward look for the Canadian team right here. The gold trim on the Leaf is great. Nothing much to say about this, it's a proven look in hockey. Not super creative but when designing for a team like Canada, why get too crazy when this works just fine. There are some stripe thickness issues on the jerseys. Some of the stripes are thicker than others, and the hem stripes are thinner than the arm stripes when I think they should all be the same.

Rating: 7/10 - Fix the thickness issues with the striping and this is a solid set.

Vancouver Canucks (NHL Black Series) - Wings98
We saw the start of Wings' "NHL Black" series last week and this concept suffers from exactly what I thought it would. Poor color choices for the logo, and "paint bucket" striping on the jersey that matches the last few jerseys in the series, and the incorrect TV numbers. BUT, Wings has already checked in and said he scrapped the series in order to fix up the remaining concepts. Also, the front of the jersey has a green stripe on the left arm but not on the back of the jersey. Those pants would also look pretty bad with this jersey. I look forward to seeing your updated concepts Wings!

Rating: 4/10 - Definitely work on adding your own striping to the jerseys instead of just using a paint bucket tool to fill in spaces on the jersey, and don't change the colors in the logo unless it really works, but in most cases it won't.

Philadelphia Flyers Concept - David P.
David suggests the Flyers ditch their current threads in favor of a more simple, classic look. My favorite is the white jersey. I prefer the yoke matching the larger stripe on the arms and hem. The other two jerseys should have their striping colors swapped in order to keep their yokes. That's all just MY personal preference though. The problem I run into with this set is they then start to look too similar to other teams in the league. The Flyers have a pretty unique set as it is and I wouldn't want to see it go for something like this, NOT that these are bad by any means. I just don't see the Flyers as a team that could pull something like this off and get away with it full time. I wouldn't mind seeing one of these as an alternate though or even a future outdoor game jersey. Few "bugs", there's some slight pixelation around the logo on the darker jerseys and I really dislike how the hem striping is so thin while the arm striping is really thick.

Rating: 7/10 - Fix that logo problem and widen the hem stripes and the concept is improved by about a point.

Toronto Maple Leafs Alternate Jersey Concept - Dylan W.
Holy......What the..... I'm at a loss for words. But I'll type some anyway. Other Dylan suggests the Leafs go all out with the Leaf thing and sublimate leaves all over a jersey. I don't like the sublimation on the jersey. If the Leafs were to start using actual leaf shapes on their jersey I'd rather it be very subtle rather than turning into literal piles of leaves. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing the striping pattern used here in blue and white on an alternate or specialty jersey. In blue and white of course. The color scheme here is another thing I can't get on board with. I applaud the "outside the box" approach on this one. I also feel like Dylan may have done this to get some conversation going on. So go ahead and tell him what you think in the comments.

Looking at it again, this looks like something the Marlies would do. Total minor league move. Not that that's bad, though, when teams do stuff like this it normally ends up bad.

Rating: 4/10 - Personally, I don't like anything but the striping pattern here. Make that blue and white and we'll talk.

Team Ireland Concept - Matt R.
Matt's entry into the Bottom 10 Competition. He chooses Ireland and takes his inspiration from the Team Russia jerseys for Sochi this upcoming Olympics. The dark jersey seems to be almost a color swapped replica of Russia's dark jersey while the white jersey is an Irish version of that Russian eagle/dragon/.......dog...... thing they'll be wearing. I wouldn't be surprised if anymore Nike jerseys for the Olympics end up looking like this. I personally don't think it's a good look for a home/road set, wouldn't be against it as an alternate.

Rating: 6/10 - Swap the white out with a light version of the dark and use the current white here as an alt. Also, change up the striping on the dark so it doesn't look so similar to Russia's jersey.

Team Canada Concept - Stephen T.
Stephen takes some design cues from past Nike jerseys by using the vertical arm stripes, something I was never a fan of, but Nike managed to make them look "not so bad", but I really don't like the striping on the socks. I also don't care for the colored side panel, I'd either have the side striping go all the way to the arms or just have it stop at the end of their panel and leave the colored panels the same color as the jersey. I like the logo choice, I wouldn't mind seeing less black and more gold overall throughout the jerseys.

Rating: 6/10 - Some things are good, and some are bad. Less black more gold would be cool, and less vertical stripes.

Kansas City Scouts Concept - Rob C.
Last but not least, Rob resurrects the Scouts. It's nice to see that old school logo on a jersey but I wish the striping was bigger and bolder. This color scheme is "loud" and it deserves a jersey design that kind of matches that... not too much of course. If you wanted to keep the colored cuffs, then make the mid-arm stripes thicker so that they aren't almost invisible. I would also like to see some sort of hem stripe. Blank hems very rarely work for me.

Rating: 6.5/10 - Bigger, bolder striping and something on the hem improves this concept. Same goes for the socks.

Well that's the post today. Anything you want to talk about? The Flames jersey, the contest entries, the concepts?  Go ahead and leave a comment! Disagree with something I said? State your opinion! Be heard! To the comments! See you there!

Tuesday: A Treat For You All.

Welcome all to another day at HJC. And another day closer to Halloween! Does anyone else love this time of year as much as me? Do you guys play a long with the Halloween time? Does it annoy you? What are some of your favorite Halloween flicks? The other day I turned on the original Halloween movie (Michael Myers, if anyone doesn't know). It's always considered that classic Halloween movie to watch, so I decided, why not? This year was the first time I watched it, and laughed. To be honest, this movie is not all that it's cracked up to be. Sure it's one of the original horrors, but the terrible acting, and badly thought out events really didn't do it for me. If that was released today, it would probably be considered a comedy. Regardless, I love this time of year. Apple pie, cool temperatures, leaves on the ground, and of course, some insane and great Sabres hockey!!!.....not quite.

Calgary Flames NIKE 3rd Jersey - (Brady S.)
Brady makes a concept that is pretty similar to what Calgary unveiled Sunday. The only thing I didn't like about the jersey was that the arm stripes didn't match the hem, it just looked off without one black stripe. I do like how Brady keeps it consistent here. I think I prefer the striping they used, I liked the thicker white and yellow stripes. Then make the bottom black stripe thinner. I think it would make it look better. As for everything else I'm fine with. I know there wasn't an actual good quality image of it, so I'd expect that Brady would put the new shoulder patch on it. Just an execution note. The number on the back is quite small. If you look it's really almost as big as the arm numbers (over exaggerating). Decent jersey, same with the actual one though, some few touch ups. Concept Rating [7.8/10]

Anaheim Ducks NIKE 3rd Jersey - (Brady S.)
Brady continues his third jersey entries with the Ducks take now. Word on the street is that the Ducks will use an orange jersey for the Stadium Series game with their Mighty logo. I think this could be a pretty close possibility to what we could see for a future duck game. I've never been a fan of the bronze color for the ducks look, so I would like to see that go and leave the color scheme all together. To fix that I think putting white where the bronze is for the striping could be a great fix, or even just add in the orange there. Really nothing to truly complain about here. A usual Duck design that looks pretty good. It looks better here, but I'd make the same comment about the back number. Concept Rating [7.5/10]

Chicago Blackhawks Stadium Series Concept - (Michael G.)
Michael makes a conservative move in my opinion for the Blackhawks Stadium series jersey, and why not? Does there really need to be new jerseys for the Stadium Series games? I feel it just took all the fun out of the Winter Classic, to the point where it isn't classic or different anymore. Might as well just have all these games around the New Year at different times. Anyways, I wouldn't agree to these changes for a third jersey, but for a specialty jersey I'm all for it. Just using the vintage white, and slightly altering the arm striping is a nice feel. Although I like the current design better, and current logo. I think this could be a nice think to see on the ice. Concept Rating [8.3/10]

Team Greece Concept - (Mike S.)
Mike gives us a very striped loaded concept here. For Greece, it's expected, and it looks good. I really like the dark jersey better here. I think it's more consistent and doesn't have any confused looks on it. Maybe a little too, stripe loaded. Maybe have it like the Wild's home jersey and half it stop half way down, or more space in between the stripes? No other complaint on the blue jersey. The white jersey however could use a little work in my opinion. Everything is nice except how the yoke just comes in. I think it really throws it off. To fix it, I think it would be cool to have white stripes on the blue yoke, where the blue stripes ended off on the arms. So it's like an inverse effect on the yoke. Or either just continue the striping through the yoke. As it stands though right now, it just looks off to me. Concept Rating [7.8/10]

Las Vegas Royals - (Bryan W.)
I kind of want a little clarification right here on this one from Bryan. Did you create these logos? Is this team just a concept/fantasy team? Or did you have a mindset of having them join the NHL? Regardless, I like it. I take it that you used the vegas gold color, and that blue really compliments it. Is it blue? I'm getting a little hint of purple from my screen. Maybe another clarification added to the list. As for the jersey, it's pretty nice. I especially like the dark more. I think it's a nice balance between all the colors that fit into a classy feel. For the white jersey, I don't hate the gold, but I don't love it that much either. At the same time, if you want the same striping pattern I wouldn't really know how to balance it out again. I think you nailed it consistency wise, and I will not take off any point because I don't like the gold color. Concept Rating [8.4/10]

Lethbridge College Kodiaks - (William B.)
Hmm, right away I can tell I will not like the color scheme of this team. I don't know if it's because it's a lighter green and blue, or if that it's a dull version of them that makes this concept look really washed out. I think the design is pretty nice. Though I noticed something with the yoke and arm striping. I think the yoke looks really cool on the white jersey, and if you continued that look to the arms (a blue outline, with the white in place of blue) would make it look a lot better. Same with the blue jersey. Make the striping match the yoke. The hem striping is both original and cool. It's nice to spice things up sometimes. One thing that looks weird to me is the black outlined logo, but the only other black is outlining the numbers. I think more black in the whole concept could make it look a lot better. For the alternate. It looks like the Penguins word mark jersey. Not a huge fan of it. Unless there is a some sort of significance to Lethbridge hockey that I'm not sure of, this is just okay. I'm never really a fan of Wordmark jerseys unless it's the Rangers, so that's nothing against the image you had for the team. I just never had a feel for them no matter what colors or team they are. Concept Rating [7.4/10]

I think the colors really bring this one down for me. The concept as a whole I'd give a 8/10 for the design. The colors just don't seem to go together on a jersey for me.

Chicago Blackhawks Concept - (Stephen T.)
I don't think Blackhawk fans will like this move. I on the other hand really like it. Not enough to take over their current jerseys, but a fan that would think that the black would be a nice alternate, and the white could be a Stadium Series jersey for the future to ponder with. The black jersey I think looks really nice. The red, and white really look nice together. And the red from the hem carrying down to the end is a nice touch for me. That Chicago red is something I love to see on their jerseys. Not as big of a fan for the white jersey. I think it's just because the black is really taking over. Maybe if I saw this on the ice though I would change my mind. An execution note, the logo seems fairly large here. Just a tone down would make it look much better. Concept Rating [7.9/10]

Edmonton Oilers Concept - (Rob C.)
Oouuff, sorry Rob, cannot say I'm a fan here at all. So let me try to help this out of box design out. And I'm not saying that in a bad way, it's always nice to see these. First let's start off with the side paneling, I think those need to be taken away no matter what. To me, side panels really never look good on a hockey jersey. So let's take those away. We still have the design on the arms, which could work, but for the oilers I don't think so. I honestly think that could be an amazing Thrashers arm look if they were still around, for the Oilers though, not so much. For that I would just keep regular straight stripes (Orange stripe, outlined by a white stripe) maybe two of those down the arm. The design didn't work at all with me. It's just one of those things where something that doesn't work out. That doesn't mean you shouldn't go outside the box though. That is one think I liked about this concept. It could definitely work for another team. Concept Rating [4/10 ---w/o side paneling 6/10] (I just think side paneling is always a quick fix.

Dallas Stars Concept - (David P.)
This one has the potential I can tell right away. David gives us a third look at the Dallas new identity, and for the most part keeps the same look for this one. The yoke is something I am a huge fan of, and I'm glad it's kept green here. The striping is good, nothing too flashy here. The one problem is an execution note, the bottom stripe on the arms is way thicker than the other white stripes, which really throws this off for a jersey freak like me. Without TV numbers, and a shoulder patch (shoulder patch might not be needed) the jersey seems very bare, with really nothing too amazing going on. I'm not really a fan of the roundel as the crest logo. I think that should just stay as a shoulder patch, or just on merchandising. I'm a really big fan of the state of Texas logo they have, maybe that one could stand out more to me. So again, nothing crazy, nothing that really stands out to me. Just an okay jersey in my opinion. Wouldn't mind seeing it as an alternate, but nothing more. Concept Rating [7.2/10]

St. Louis Blues Concepts - (David P.)
I think it's pretty weird that two concepts today had basically the same Bruin tweaked yoke. It's one thing using the Bruins yoke, but have the same outline cutoff is pretty awesome. And I have to say, it looks really good. This one is much in my opinion is a much better attempt from David. There is however some same mistakes that I'll quickly point out. The TV numbers, and I think the logo may be a tad on the small side. The jersey design as a whole looks good. It's when we go into detail that I find some negative traits. The biggest thing from be is the two different patterns from arm the hem. Sometimes I'm a fan of it, when it's just a small difference, like an inverse in color, or one stripe turns into the end of the jersey, but when there are two sets of classic striping, it really doesn't work. I would go with the hem pattern for the design, I think that one matches the yoke a lot better, so I think that should be used for the whole thing. And just one comment before I end, man does that Gold jersey look good. Concept Rating [7.4/10]

San Jose Sharks Halloween concept - (Dylan W.)
We end off today with a treat from me. I was going to do an all out series (trying to do the most in the same time period) but I started getting really bored and turned off. I guess the jersey design freak in me just couldn't take the looks I was making any more. So this one is just a little fun I had for the Halloween season. Trick or Treat.

Today was a very different day in reviewing jerseys. To be honest I think all of these jersey had something that I didn't really like. Now obviously, that's just my opinion. So was I too harsh on today's concepts? Leave your comments below to help out these artists. Did you like the things that weren't to my taste? As always VOTE VOTE VOTE, and half a great week!

Hooray, Jets beat the Stars, and it's another Monday here on HJC!

Here are your voting reminders for the week, and just to spice things up, here's a song from NHL 2003 to remind you to vote (one of my favourite hockey songs ever)

How can you not get pumped up by this song, it should pump you up to vote!

COTW Oct 21-27 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTY logo entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

The COTY 2013 logo contest is under way, and lets see some of the beautiful entries that have come in so far mes amies.

None have come in yet...so..yeah

I love the new 3rd jersey for the Flames, I love everything about it, not much else I can say, one of my favourites in the NHL right now for sure, next to the Islanders 3rd (stop judging me)

On to the concepts:

North Carolina State Wolfpack concept (By: Mike S.)

I love U.S. college designs, sometimes very classic but sometimes too simplistic. I love the striping design, it reminds me of the Blackhawks jerseys, but the yoke striping is amazing, it really sets it apart from others, I've actually never seen this yoke stripe style. I also like the matching arm cuffs and maybe would make It similar to the Habs away jersey and take away the arm striping perhaps, just an idea though. (8.5/10)

Winnipeg Jets concepts (By: Brady S.)

I love reviewing Jets concepts, and I'm so happy I get to see off Brady's Swift re-design. First off, congrats, it was an interesting series and a well executed one as well. I love the concept, and the minor changes one the jersey, for the most part, are good. I like the new yoke style, both styles are good looking, and the blue jersey is almost untouched. The white jersey has a different striping pattern, which, looks good, but makes me think the main colour is light blue, not navy. (8.5/10)

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: S2tudio)

I always say the Pens jerseys now look okay, but the fact that they copy Ottawa and the old Tampa Bay jerseys, sort of takes away from the set. I love this set, even the light blue jersey! The home and road are nice and simple, especially the white jersey, I love that. The vintage jersey is pretty good, even the white socks looks good. The monochromatic jersey doesn't cram too much in but doesn't over simplify things. (9/10)

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: David P.)

David attempts to modernize the Pens original gold and black look, and white it does have some execution issues, I to see the effort. The curved striping is a nice treat, reminding me of the Atlanta away jersey from the original edge cookie cutter sets, but a lot more refined and classic. The logo is far too small and the shoulder patches should be properly done (ie: halved at yoke border). I would also really recommend T.V. numbers. (6/10)

Anaheim Ducks Concept (By: Wings98)

Wow this is bright! This is part of Wings98s NHL black series, which I'm guessing is to give each team a very neon and dark look. The execution errors in all of Wings98's previous concepts apply here, so I won't beat a dead horse, but I'll just talk about how to make thinks better. I'd get rid of the green yoke and add some green and purple to the hem stripe, automatically bring this concept up to a 6. The gear looks okay, though a green stripe on the sock striping instead of a big green blob would look better. (5.5/10)

Anaheim Ducks Concepts (By: Jeff C.)

The one major problem I have with this concept is the size of all the striping. I like the Jeff is experimenting with new template, but the striping is way to small, especially the hem, that should be much thicker. Other than that, I kinda like the idea, but I think the black jersey could use a lot more white, at least somewhere on the jersey. (6/10)

Anaheim Ducks Concepts (By: David P.)

Like the previous concept, the logo is way to small, and TV numbers really help make the concept look professional. This idea is nothing new, but is still a good idea. I would also add a recoloured duck foot as a shoulder patch to make the jersey more interesting, and maybe make the arm stripes similar to the hem stripes. (5.5/10)

Los Angeles Kings Concept (By: Steven G.)

I actually really like this idea, despite it being really similar to the Canadiens pre-edge jerseys. The lack of white isn't too bad of an idea, but still a little white wouldn't hurt. The script really amplifies the Kings look, and surrounded by purple, why isn't Ziggy Palffy wearing this? Not much eles I can say, I really like this. (9/10)

New York Islanders Concept (By: Bryan W.)

Just because the Nets decided to change to black and white, now every team in Brooklyn is going to be the same. Despite that thought, I like it, it is a mix between the Brooklyn Americans jerseys and the four stripe Islanders patches. The Islanders shoulder patch should be a little smaller though, it is a little too big for the shoulder and maybe adding some gray into the striping would be cool. (9/10)

Team Greece Concepts (By: Alan H.)

I personally love any international team striping that uses the country's flag. The striping looks good, and I love the new number set, very modern and typical of Alan, the master of modern. The white helmet actually matches the flag quite well, I kind of would like to see the cross on the yoke or on the arms somewhere to completely match the flag. (8.5/10)

Remember to don't Deny votes to the concepts up for bid and submit your logo designs to the HJC contest by Friday! Ryan has posted his more in-depth review of the Flames awesome new alternate, go to the HJC Design link on the side panel for a fun little read. Have a great week, Go Jets Go, and wish me luck as I take on the teams at my high school's intermural floor hockey tournament (we're wearing Leafs jerseys and calling ourselves the Bruisers because that being my nickname (a little play on my last name Bruce). Will post results and possible team photo on Monday!
