Wednesday: Last of the Month

Hello and welcome all again! I hope you're all excited for the last post of July which means we'll have a new COTY vote coming up soon. But before that we need to get this last day out of the way. So let's get to it!

Also, to the two left in the HJC Open, your concepts are due by tonight at 6 EST if you haven't gotten them in.

COTW July 22-28 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

Also, Ted N. would like to us to share this online Uniform Design Class. I'm sure some of our new concept artists would like to check this out to help refine their design skills. And maybe some of our more experienced artists maybe to practice. Check it out!

Anaheim Ducks Stadium Series Concept - (Alex H.)
With the recent news that the Ducks will be "Mighty" once again for a few games this upcoming season, it now seems almost for sure, to me anyway, that the Ducks will take this route and go "Mighty" for the Stadium Series. Essentially a current Ducks jersey recolored with a new logo. Nothing too imaginative but I can't imagine anyone being disappointed if the Ducks wore this exact jersey.

Rating: 7/10

Los Angeles Kings Stadium Series Concept - (Alex H.)
Alex goes the same route with the Kings as he did the Ducks. It's essentially a current Kings jersey with an old logo on it, plus a hem stripe and some pit stains. I don't like the pit stains. but the rest of the jersey is nice. Again, nothing really exciting, it's just a mashup of new and old, and those jerseys aren't very different.

Rating: 6/10

Leesville Pride (High School - Raleigh, NC) - (Coby S.)
Coby's back and he brings us a very rarely seen around these parts High School Concept. First off, I looked up Leesville Pride and didn't find that logo, but I did find it on a stock image site. Make sure you cite where you got your logos from if it's nota commonly used and recognizable logo as per HJC Logo Use Policy. Since it's a Nike jersey you would also want to put your nameplate in the shoulder yoke. There's a few areas where the stitching disappears and you can see where the green circle was on the front of the jersey. Fix those and this is a good looking jersey. Hem stripe would be great too.

Rating: 5/10

Nashville Predators Alternate Jersey Concept - (Coby S.)
Coby's back again with an NHL concept that I feel is showing improvements in Coby's skills. First off I'm noticing the white stripes on the jersey overlap the outline of the template. Also, as this is a Nike jersey, the nameplate would probably go in the yoke, I have yet to see a Nike jersey that doesn't include the name in the yoke. So when the name moves up the number would get bigger. It's nice to see the shoulder logos correctly placed. I'd probably move them down to the end of the yoke, so they are in the little half circle panel. The TV numbers are also incorrectly placed on the back of the jersey.

Rating: 6/10

Carolina Hurricanes Concept - (Felix T.)
Felix seems to have an idea for a fix on the Canes' new red jersey. It's nice to see the flag pattern back on the jersey. I'm indifferent with the two thin white lines instead of one thick one. I also don't care for the return of the ghost yoke outline.

Rating: 7/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept - (Felix T.)
Felix returns the Penguins to black and yellow with this concept. I like the striping and this definitely reminds me of the 90's Penguins jerseys which everyone seems to like. I'd like to see an outline on the logo so the penguin doesn't get lost in the black of the jersey. The shade of black on the logo is different from the jersey. Also, the nameplate should be in the yoke on the Nike template.

Rating: 7.5/10

Buffalo Sabres Alternate Jersey Concept - (Kyle C.)
Kyle brings us a much more conservative yellow jersey that what we're being teased lately. I think this concept fits in very well with the jerseys the team wears now. It's got a throwback quality to it. If things end up looking ugly for the Sabres new jersey, I would like to see this get thrown on by the players.

Rating: 8/10

Quebec Nordiques Concept - (Michael G.)
Michael redesigns the defunct Nordiques and leaves out red and the igloo logo. It's actually a bit refreshing to see a Quebec concept that seems to be somewhat modernized instead of a rehash of old jerseys or that old logo. I'm sure it's safe to say that if Quebec gets their team back they'll use the old moniker but pull a "Jets" and have a redesigned logo. I hope they do because as good as these jerseys look, I don't know how I feel about seeing the fleur de lis as the main crest.  I'm also noticing that there's two different shades of blue used, it's noticeable between the socks and jersey on the dark set.

Rating: 8/10

Abbotsford Heat Concept - (Ryan - HJC)
Our great leader Ryan brings us a concept featuring one of the younger teams in the AHL. I like his new custom logo which takes the puck and "A" from their current logo. It's better than their current wordmark on the front. I also like the jerseys significantly better than their current set. The only thing I don't like, and it's a personal problem, is the pit stains. I'd prefer no piping and a hem stripe as well.

Rating: 8.5/10

Cincinnati Stingers Concept - (William B.)
And we'll end today with an old WHA concept. I like where this concept is headed. Especially the squared off yoke. I feel the arm stripes could be thicker and either have less or have them go all the way up the arm to the yoke. I'm ok with the number font but I don't like all the outlines on the name. It's hard to read.

Rating: 7/10

Also, if possible could someone with more knowledge on the Nike Swift template confirm my beliefs that the nameplate is always in the yoke, if not at least very close to the top of the jersey?!  I noticed that mistake in a lot of concepts today.

Tuesday: Jersey Off-Season

No perfect off-season in hockey without a couple of teams getting new jerseys, and a whole list of teams playing in outdoor games! Every time I hear of a new team announcing a jersey I get excited! I really hope these teams made a good looking jersey. I'm scared for the Sabres, signs show it might not be my taste.

Let's move on with the concepts!

COTW July 22-28 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

Quad City Mallards alternate concept - (Dylan W. -Me)
This one honestly, was just a execution test jersey. I threw it together and really tried hard on making the striping look like it's stitched on and what not. So other than that. Tell me what you think in the comments.

Buffalo Sabres Concept - (Felix T.)
Felix takes a stab at giving the Sabres an alternate. The striping, is pretty similar to what the Sabres wore, just with the darker blue, but with the script on the front. I was a fan of the script, I wish it was kept (without the namebar though) I was never a fan of the slug font. And the phantom yoke attached to the ...piping I don't think looks that great, especially that the piping goes all the way through the hem. Without the yoke and piping I would think this is pretty good, but I'm not feeling it right now. Concept ratin [6.5/10]

Ottawa Senators Concept - (Coby S.)
Coby gives us a different senators look. Looks like a redesigned past jersey, but without any gold. I think the red, black, and white color scheme looks really sharp, but I think the senators need gold. I'm not sure why, but I always thought gold was a color they should always have on their jerseys.  Overall the striping looks good. Some execution errors that stand out are the sizes of the name on back and number. And for the sleeve numbers, the 6 is upside down. And if you made that logo, I actually kind of like it. Could use some touch ups, but I think it looks good! Concept rating [7/10]

Miami Dolphins NFL Concept - (Coby S.)
Miami recently showed us a new logo. It's still weird to see being a huge football fan, but I'll get used to it. Honestly, I know this might be based off their new jerseys that have striping on them, but since this is a concept for hockey this just doesn't seem right having no striping. And again the sleeve numbers are upside down, and the shoulder script log is upside down too. Even fixing that wouldn't help. I would honestly say you have to put something on a hockey jersey besides the logos and numbers. Concept rating [2/10]

Utica Flames AHL idea - (Phil B.)
I actually really like the Calgary like striping with out it being vertical. Looks really nice. Too be honest I think the logo could use a little work. Maybe putting more circulation to the 'U' instead of it just going straight up would help. But jersey wise I think those look really nice. I want to say add more black in the white jersey. But I wouldn't know where. Maybe the yoke? Either way. They look like a classic set.
Concept rating [7.5/10]

New York Islanders Alternate Concept - (Phil B.)
This one looks really sharp. A recolored version of their black alt I know, but this goes much farther than that. Not sure about the gray as the yoke color. I think it would look better in any other color. White, orange, even giving the Islanders more black. I like the decision on using their primary for the crest. Like the Sabres, they don't need to make an alternate logo.  Concept rating [7.5/10]

Buffalo Sabres 3rd Guess - (Steve M.)

I take it this is a guess at what the Sabres will reveal. And if this is what the Sabres have in store. Sign me up to get a jersey! I think it looks great! I like basically everything about it and would like to see it on ice. Obviously I don't see this happening though. Only in my dreams I guess. Not much else to say. I really really like it. Great concept! Concept rating [9/10]

Minnesota North Stars Concept - (Michael G.)
Michael starting a remodeling series for defunct teams. Let's see where he takes us with this. Wow, this is bright. But at the same time I still love the color scheme. I like the striping, looks like it's completely different..yet the same. The only thing I'm not digging is the Stars logo on the shoulder. I thin it may be too much for a shoulder patch. Just a little execution note. Since it's only a 7 for the number the seven should be cut in half at the top of the jersey, to show that it's centered. I think I'm going to like where Mike is headed with this! Concept rating [8/10]

Calgary Flames Alternate Concept - (Tom V)
I've been a huge fan of Tom's recent work. If I'm not mistaken, I think I've reviewed his last couple, unless I'm missing one or two. Anyways, I think striping wise and jersey this is awesome. I see it a lot, but I guess because it looks great. I think the setback would be the logo. Maybe even just ditching the 'C' and just having the 'F' would be fine. I just think the regular looking 'C' throws off the logo a bit. Regardless, the jersey is great! Concept rating [8.5/10]

St. Louis Blues Concept - (Kyle. N)
It's really hard not to like this one. I always think double blue looks great. And not only that, but that white jersey looks shar-ar-arp. Wow, not even close to being a St. Louis fan, but I would pay money for that. I know it doesn't have the dark blue, but that might be my only complaint on this concept. Maybe the pants, but I'm not too concerned about that. I think that's the only negative thing. Maybe just adding the dark blue in the mini stripes of the white jersey would even satisfy me. Awesome job Kyle! Concept rating [9/10] COTW nom from me!

Hope you guys agreed, if not leave it in the comments below and let these designers here what you think! Have a good Tuesday!

Monday: Sabres Guesses and More!!!

Welcome to the Monday post  everybody.

Here are your voting reminders :
COTW July 22-28 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

While we wait for the Sabres new 3rd jersey, the Blues, Sharks, Wild and the many throwbacks for this season, speculation is increasingly becoming common. Today, we have 3 Sabres yellow jerseys, as well as a Winter Classic edit.

Lets' dive in.

Detroit Red Wings Winter Classic Concept (By: Andrew B.)

While some people, like me, LOVE the Winter Classic jerseys, new ideas are always a good idea, and Andrew's idea is an interesting one. I like the inclusion of beige and white together, and works as the jersey is white. The arm band is an interesting idea, but I think the underarm striping doesn't need to be there, The font is good, as is the red nameplate. (7/10)

Buffalo Sabres Alternate Concept (By: Austin E.)

Austin takes all the evidence that the Sabres gave in their unveiling video, and came up with this idea. I have to say, it does look rather close, and based on the evidence, this looks to be a very modern jersey. I'm not thrilled with the arms, the white band is a good idea, but the half blue half yellow cuff isn't may favourite idea. It doesn't seem like a logical idea for any team to do such a thing. I think we should expect blue and gray cuffs all the way around. Other than that, this is an accurate theory as to what we may expect in the Sabres this fall. (8.5/10)

Buffalo Sabres Alternate Concept (By: Dylan W.)

Another solid theory, Dylan gives us a new arm idea, and a larger blue hem. The arm idea, is a great idea, with the arm leading to the large white arm bands, and blue on the back. Numbers within the white arm band is a great idea, I'm not huge on the hem, white needs more gray, like the Austin's concept. I think Dylan has a good grasp on what to expect, but gray needs to be included. (9/10)

Colorado Avalanche Concept (By: Felix T.)

The Avalanche, while only being 18 years old, sure do need new jerseys, and I think the Avs could pull off a classic jersey, and this concept continues to prove that idea. The arm band is a good idea, and the underarm striping does work, as does the striping pattern. The random white triangle doesn't work, I think it's supposed to be a mountain, but it doesn't work, and distracts from the good jersey. (7/10)

Phoenix Coyotes Concept (By: Kyle N.)

Originally, I though Phoenix had a decent alternate, but I can't stand it now, and the team could use a black alternate, that is better. Kyle takes a 2002 USA Olympic-esque approach, with a curved arm band and classic hem stripe. I don't think Philly should have the monopoly on this style of arm band, as most if not all teams could pull it off. The jersey looks good, but I think a little more black on the arm band and shoulders could help with balancing the colours. (8/10)

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Michael G.)

Michael G. sees the pre-edge Sens alternate should be used as home and road jerseys, and have a classic alternate. The alternate looks great, and could be used as a winter classic jersey (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). The home and road isn't grabbing me. The lack of white on the black is a little distracting and the white jersey could be much better in the colour balancing department.(6.5/10)

Dallas Stars Concepts (By: Phil B.)

Dallas is getting the gold treatment from Phil, who swaps the silver for gold in this concept, and makes a matching striping pattern. I like the idea, but at the same time, I don't think the striping works on the white jersey. The green and gold should be switched on the striping, and maybe having a 3 outline number set. I'd like to see a yellow attempted, and a darker green used. (7/10)

Florida Panthers Concepts (By: Stephen T.)

This idea for the Panthers is a good idea, but the execution errors are easy to fix and should be fixed. The white jersey should have blue numbers to balance the colours, and logos are way too big, and the numbers are crooked. The striping however is good, as is the yoke, but the execution errors should be fixed and this concept would be better. (6/10)

Buffalo Sabres Concept (By: William B.)

William has a different idea with the Sabres alternate off of the Buffalo Bison of the AHL. The traditional striping pattern and logo are all good, as is the font choice. The idea of an NHL team offering a throwback to an AHL team is not a bad idea, especially since many cities had AHL teams first before an NHL team. (9/10) COTW nom from me.

Weekend Update (July 28)

Hello all.

The Final of the HJC Open is set. It will be #9 Thomas H. against #10 Andrew G.

I'll be honest, Andrew in the Final is an upset in my mind. However, I think it really shows the consistent quality and execution of his concepts. Well done and good luck Andrew!

Thomas' journey to the Final may be considered a "surprising" one. He entered the first round as a sub and ended up being placed as the 9th seed. I'd consider his semi-final defeat of Matt Mc. a bit of an upset, but Thomas had definitely proved that he belongs. Well done and good luck Thomas!

Round 3 voting results can be seen on the HJC OPEN page.

The winner of the COTW vote for July 15-21 is JCR Graphix!

Saturday: Countdown to the season and Sochi

We are now another week closer to the beginning of the 2013-14 NHL season and another week closer to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Players have been invited to their respective team camps and the NHL is well-represented. My Blackhawks have had plenty of players invited and should have a lot of representation at the Olympics. Here's hoping that Nick Leddy, Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad can take one more step towards joining the Triple Gold Club, and since he's coaching the US and not the Penguins, hopefully Dan Bylsma does too.

As a reminder, the HJC Open Semifinal voting runs until 6PM Eastern time tomorrow. Get your votes in!

Buffalo Sabres (by Ben)

While I'm certainly disappointed that my hopes for a straight gold recolor of the Sabres' current jersey have been dashed, I'm hopeful about their new jersey. After seeing the crap that the Hurricanes put out, I really am crossing my fingers and hoping that the new third jersey for Buffalo doesn't suck. This one would definitely be somewhat acceptable. If you got rid of the vertical piping on the sleeves and the random white stripe on the hem, it'd be a great design. Overall, I'll give it a 7.5/10.

Calgary Flames (by Felix)

Felix has two concepts today. The first is for a new Flames jersey and this one is definitely interesting. It's a design that would definitely be at home in the 1990s with the flame stripe design, while the side panels suggest a mid-2000s design. It needs improvement, though. Adding some gold would definitely help to brighten the design, and I'd ditch the side panels. Overall, I'll give it a 7/10.

Phoenix Coyotes (by Felix)

Felix's second design takes the Coyotes in a direction they desperately need. Getting rid of the hem stripes on their jerseys was a huge mistake when they made the Edge switch. However, while I don't care much for their current name and number font, these aren't an improvement. A standard block font would have been better. In addition, the sleeve numbers are way too small. Overall, I'll give it a 7.5/10.

Raleigh Riggers (by Joey)

Ah, fantasy hockey. I always love judging these concepts because there's no baseline to go off of. With other concepts, I feel obligated to consider real-life designs if it's for a real team and what the team really wears colors my opinion. With fantasy hockey, I'm free from such concerns. This design has a lot of promise, but I'm really just not feeling it. First of all, the Bettman Apron is not a good design choice. Ditch it and send it to the history books where it belongs, never to be seen again. Second, the "tan" color doesn't stand out well against the white. I'd darken it. Also, I'm not sure if the logos are quite so hockey-ish, but considering some NHL logos, that's not that big of a deal. All of that aside, though: I really like the quality of the concept and the initiative you took to create a team from whole cloth. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Mississauga Steelheads (by Kyle)

And so for the second time in as many weeks, I have a Steelheads concept to judge and this one is just as good as the last. The color scheme and the logo work together so well and the design of the concept leaves nothing to be desired. The design is good and the execution is good. Well done. Overall, I'll give it an 8.5/10.

Atlanta Thrashers (by Phil)

As you're all aware, the Thrashers had a history of somewhat gaudy uniforms and this one is no exception, except unlike the Thrashers' real-life uniforms, this one actually attempts to be somewhat conservative. It's basically a fusion of the more modern elements of the Thrashers' designs with what a hockey jersey should look like in a really flashy color scheme. It wouldn't look out of place in Atlanta. I don't like the logo, though, because while it was an official team logo, it's really just a piece of their primary logo. The whole logo looks much better than the part. I would have used that logo instead. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Ottawa Senators (by Stephen)

I don't care what anyone says - the 3D centurion logo is better than the original. I won't change my mind. It's just a better logo overall and the Senators look better in a darker shade of gold like the one used here. Stephen's concept cleans up the Senators (something they (and the Penguins) desperately need) and brings them back to their roots. It's a clean and classy look. However, I think the design could use some gold instead of having it solely in the logo. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Columbus Blue Jackets (by Steven)

Steven continues his de-Edge series with Columbus this week and this is one of my favorites of the bunch. I really like the sleeve design and the overall simplicity of the design is a refreshing change. Then again, the Blue Jackets' current jerseys aren't exactly overly-complicated anyway. Still, this would be an improvement over what they currently wear. I'd add a more substantial hem stripe to the design, though, because the three-stripe design would look really good as one. Also, while it may seem like I'm repeating myself from an earlier concept, a simple block font would look better here. I've never liked Columbus' name/number font. Overall, I'll give it an 8.5/10.

Friday: Better Late Than Never

Hey guys, it's me Ricky, and welcome to.... nah just kidding. It's me, Your favorite Wednesday writer, Dylan A. We don't know where Ricky is so someone had to post for today, and seeing as how I've had my fair share of late days, it's only fair I chip in and post on Ricky's behalf.

We have one COTW vote and the Semi Finals for the HJC Open.....So don't forget to vote, and that's obvious...

COTW July 15-21 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
HJC Open Semi-Finals voting (ends Sunday @ 6pm Eastern)

And now onto the concepts!

Calgary Flames Concept - (Caleb F.)
Pretty simple design for the Flames from Caleb. After seeing some of the busy nonsense they've been wearing for awhile, I, and hopefully everyone else, is hoping a simple redesign, like this, is in their near future. It'd be nice to see the back of the jerseys and the TV numbers look odd. I'd put them in the normal spot down the arm.

Rating: 7/10

Seattle Metropolitans WIHL Concept - (Dylan W.)
I like when our artists start series or fake leagues, and Mr. Wonka has a really good one going so far. I really like the work he's done with the logos. I'm not so sure about the wavy circles but still though, the hockey sticks going up into the needle is great! The jerseys are also very well done. I'm glad he stayed away from using the wavy lines in the jersey design.

Rating: 9/10 COTW NOM from one Dylan to another!

Montreal Canadiens Alternate Jersey Concept - (Frank C.)
Frank gives the Habs a blue jersey, something I wouldn't be opposed to seeing. It's different seeing the leaf on the front, which I would feel should be left off the front of the jersey unless it were red. Too close to the Leafs for my taste.

Rating: 7.5/10

Washington Capitals Concept - (Jack H.)
Jack gives the Caps a new set of jerseys sans vertical arm stripes. Actually now that I look at it, the jersey designs look to be based off of the current socks. The white stripe on the red should be thicker though. I'd rather the set look like the white jersey. The red jersey looks rather boring.

Rating: 7.5/10

Acadie-Bathurst Titan (QMJHL) Concept - (Jake88)
It appears that our friend Jake has moved out of Europe and moved onto the Q. It's interesting to see the horned template without its horns. The yoke is especially interesting. I can't say I like it though. The rest of the striping is good though, I'd leave the yoke blank.

Rating: 7/10

As it starts storming pretty good in my neck of the woods I need to get this post done quick so I can post it before my power goes out of something!

Ottawa 67's (OHL) Concept - (Kyle C.)
We have another juniors concept, but this time it's the 67's! Big and bold. That's what these jerseys are all about. The O in the logo is big and bold, so the striping is too! I really like it, especially the squared off yokes. It fits in well with the logo and it's angled on the corners.

Buffalo Sabres New Alternate Concept - (Stephane S.)
Stephane has a guess as to what the new Sabres alternate will look like, or at least what he wants it to look like. It's definitely interesting with the white arm bands. The different colored collar and the yoke going under the collar are really interesting and something I'm looking forward to seeing.

Rating: 7/10

Ottawa Senators Concept - (Tyler G. - HJC.)
We'll end today's post with a concept from HJC's own, Tyler. Tyler returns the Sens to something very simple, and reminiscent of their early jerseys, something that would be nice to actually see happen. I love the use of the 2D logo and the "O" on the shoulders. It'd be nice if the "O" was white on the red jersey to stick out better.

Rating: 8/10
