Friday: The Good, the Sketchy, and the Voting

Good day to all and more concepts have been coming in as of late! Three of today's are from the Monday contributor, WinnipegJets96 of the ten submitted concepts. The first is the most unique of all so I will separate it from the rest in order to prove a point regarding its uniqueness. Before that, I provide you with the following reminders:

COTW May 20-26 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EDT)
"Untouchables" Bruins Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EDT)
(HJC Playoff Pool pick submissions (ends Saturday @ 5PM EDT)

Las Vegas Hookers (Brian B.)

This one scares the heck out of me, solely because of the boldness of it. The concept itself is very well executed and very clever though very suggestive as part of the logo, "Hookers" nickname, last name "Fokmi", and even the number "00" imply. Payouts are 4:1 for this 8 out of 10.

OKC Barons (Jets96)

The primary highlights to this jersey are the removal of the Bettman striping, removal of the front piping, and addition of hem striping is also included. This concept doesn't "wow" me, but is not bad at all. Then again, I don't know if anyone can wow a concept with copper in their color scheme. Time to cash out an 8 out of 10 in black gold.

Columbus Blue Jackets (Stephen T.)

I do like this, but for the wrong reason. That reason is that this should not be used for the team, but rather for an All-Star game (if there ever is one to be held in Columbus). The uniqueness and lack of a clash version would mean that this would be an alternate, and I would be okay with that. The font is true to the regular kit as well as the striping. Another 7.5 out of 10 here.

Edmonton Oilers (Dylan W.)

The similarity between the Oilers and New York Knicks is uncanny in the regard that they sport the same colors and neither team has had an orange alternate. The Oliers didn't get on because they switched from orange to copper the season after the first ever NHL alternates were introduced (until switching back to orange recently). I like everything here except the bottom of the hem. the white and blue below the orange are supposed to be symmetrical to the yoke. Unfortunately I feel it seems a little silly and out of place and both need to be orange. the part of the hem that matches the arm striping can stay put. Interesting that the "Reebok" branding is on the sleeve. More black gold, an 8.5 out of ten.

Buffalo Sabres (Mike S.)

A gold third jersey, just what my hometown team needs, especially if it is oriented like this. I really don't have much to say other than this is exactly what an alternate jersey should be all about. It's gold, it uses the  modified logo, and the numbering (was never my favorite, but) is Sabres identifiable. The tip of the sabre is so sharp only a diamond can cut better, a 9 out of 10 and a CotW nomination.

NOR Admirals (Jets 96)

It's been interesting seeing my Ducks in their first year as the Admirals' affiliate, especially with the shortened NHL season. This color scheme features all of the primary colors, acceptable by AHL standards but does not usually translate well. The Blues jerseys from the mid to late 90s are one exception to that. If the yellow is darker, I think we have what we're looking for. It is still a solid concept nonetheless. A 7.5 out of 10.

Boston Bruins (Caleb F.)

The first thing I immediately noticed was the diagonal striping on the sleeves - a fantastic design choice. I do miss the trademark yoke, but can understand the dis-inclusion. The retro look I think would make these look good as alternates but can also pass as a regular set.I wonder if this would've been eligible for the contest . . . An 8 out of 10

Sonic (Brian B.)

Brian gives us his second contribution of the day. This one is a good start, but I am not familiar with the modern Sonic the Hedgehog branding other than the depiction of Sonic shown above. I did one for the video game contest here last May. I do recognize the rings, script, and checkering. I think this particular shade of blue (white gets a little lost in translation) as well as the modern Sonic make this a little off key otherwise I'm okay with it. A 7 out of 10 for a well thought of design.

LA Kings (Brandon C.)

Brandon gives us a "Burger King" concept. I'm still convinced it is a magi and not a King. I like the idea of seeing a gray jersey used by someone, but this isn't it. While it makes the concept look realistic, the numbers and logo I don't feel compliment the elemental distribution very well. Outside of that, I think this is a lovely jersey. Maybe gold instead of silver will do this concept justice. A result for an 8 out of 10.

PEO Rivermen (Jets 96)

True to their affiliation with St. Louis prior to the sale and pending relocation, Jets 96 makes Peoria look good. I never was a fan of this secondary logo in full. I wonder what would happen if the Blues adopted this particular set, particularly with the arch logo roundel. I'm undecided on the extended looking yoke, where it's really just a continuation of the side panels. Overall, a very appealing set, 8 out of 10.

I'm ecstatic over the Blackhawks big win in game seven against Detroit the other night. It was even better that it was Brent Seabrook that scored - I've always thought of him as a cult hero, very under-spoken and underrated. It will be one heck of a conference finals in the west, and much better than last years! Hope you'll be watching that series which starts tomorrow and/or the Bruins/Rangers series. Also, we're glad to recognize the Sportslogos website turns 16 today. Happy hockey and don't forget to send your great ideas in to us!

Thursday: Majors, minors, and a bit of college!

Hawks win! Hawks win! What a game last night, Brent Seabrook scores in OT and the Hawks beat the Red Wings in Game 7. Bring on the Kings! I believe both Game 1's are on Saturday (correct me if I'm wrong). Anyway, we have concepts to get to! Let's go!

Don't forget to vote!

Manchester Monarchs (AHL) concept (By: Jets96)

Jets96 has three AHL concepts for us today, and he starts us off with the Monarchs, the Kings farm club. They currently have one of my least favorite sets in the AHL. I of course love the Kings font, the striping is cool. I don't think the pants need the one thin white stripe, it seems like it's there just to be there. Good concept here. 7.5/10

Nashville Predators concept (By: Dylan W.)

Dylan has a checkerboard (sort of) jersey for us here. I like the checkerboard pattern that seems to be "toned-down", if that makes sense. I would go without a yoke here, it seems odd. Love the old Preds font too. Great execution, I love how you bevel and style the logos, stripes, and numbers. Awesome jersey here. 8/10

San Jose Sharks concept (By: Timmy Q.)

The Sharks were eliminated two nights ago, but why not a concept for 'em? I never like the side panels, they look bad (the only time they have ever really looked acceptable is on the Grand Rapids Griffins jerseys, IMO), you also forgot them on the back of the white jersey. The home jersey needs more white, the away jersey needs more black. There needs to be a Reebok logo behind the back of the collar. You don't need all the numbers on the side there, since they are on the jersey. With some simple execution and presentation fixes, this could be a great concept. 5/10

Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) concept (By: Jets96)

Jets96's second concept of the day, he brings us the Flyer's farm club, the Adirondack Phantoms. I actually really like their current jerseys. I love that "thorn" stripe. These jerseys seem to be modeled after the Norfolk Admirals jerseys. One thing I don't like is the difference in thickness of the black between the arm and hem striping. Other then that, awesome concept. 7.5/10

Colorado Avalanche concept (By: Mike S.)

The Avalanche recently hired Patrick Roy as their new coach, and Mike has a new concept for them. I like the minimal use in black and the increased use of grey. The stripings looks awesome. This seems to be a better version of their current alternate jersey, maybe it could be if the blue and burgundy was switched. Great execution and awesome job here, Mike. 8/10

Michigan NCAA concept (By: James C.)

James brings us our one and only college concept of the day, and it's the Wolverines of Michigan. I like all the jerseys, but my favorite has to be the vintage. Awesome job. No complaints. 8.5/10

Anaheim Ducks concept (By: Brandon C.)

Brandon changes up the Ducks color scheme to green, gold, orange, and white. Not sure what to think of that, not bad, but not great. I love all the striping, very cool. I like you chose the D-foot logo. Great execution and awesome job here, Brandon. 8.5/10

Chicago Blackhawks concept (By: Brian B.)

Well, this is sure a different concept! Not sure the Blackhawks or Reebok would ever let them do this, but I actually don't mind it. It's cool. My favorite part has to be the design in the numbers. Love that Hawk logo. Great job here thinking "outside the box". 8.5/10

Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) concept (By: Jets96)

Jets96' third and final concept of the day, he brings us the Admirals of Milwaukee. I love the simple striping. Like the skeleton logo. The only thing I don't think needs to be there is the white phantom yoke on the black jersey. Love that number font, as well. Great job here, Jets96. 8.5/10

Dallas Stars concept (By: Avi S.)

Avi closes us out with some classic Stars sweaters. It doesn't use the recently leaked logo or color scheme. I love the striping. The logos are awesome. If they Stars had to "ex-nay" gold, you could replace the gold here for grey and would make awesome jerseys for the June 4th unveiling. Awesome job here, as always, from Avi. 9.5/10 and a COTW nom from me!

Thanks for reading, have a good Friday everyone!

Wednesday: Change Is Upon Us

Happy Wednesday everyone. I hope you're all excited as within the next week two NHL teams will have new uniforms and one of them will have new logos to go with them. Speaking of which, I'm sure you've all seen the leaked Dallas Stars logos and assuming they're the real deal I like them. Not so much the roundel logo but the D-Star on its own is pretty sharp.

Texas Stars Website
As for the Hurricanes teasing their new uniforms daily on their Instagram, I'm pretty excited. It looks as if they're dropping the flag pattern across the hem, and possibly altogether, which is sad as it's one of the most unique features on any jersey in the NHL. Come June 4th though, I'm hoping whatever they show us is better than what they've been wearing which in my opinion will be hard.

But back to the Stars, turns out the big boys weren't the only team in the system with some changes, as the Texas Stars of the AHL decided to unveil new jerseys for the upcoming season. I'm surprised that the new jerseys don't utilize a green, black, silver color scheme that the Dallas Stars' leaked logos represent. Is this an instance of an AHL team sporting a look completely independent from their parent club or is it possible the Stars leaked logos are wrong? Either way these jerseys are ok. I prefer the green jersey.

Here's today's voting reminders

COTW May 20-26 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
"Untouchables" Bruins Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

We have one artist profile card today
And a whopping 11 concepts!

Calgary Flames Concept - (Timmy Q.)
We'll start today with a Flames concept with a lot of black and side panels. Quite honestly, there's not a lot to like here. I feel like the colors are fine, maybe less black would be nice. Side panels don't look very good here, same goes for colored name bars. I'd take these back to the drawing board and give them a more traditional look or something.

Rating: 4/10

Anaheim Ducks Concept - (Andy C.)
Andy takes the Ducks and puts them on a Nike template with the current color scheme. The side panes and broze arm stripes are definitely unique and something Nike would probably do. I don't think it looks that it looks so great on the front. Also not a big fan of the white "D"

Rating: 7/10

Buffalo Sabres Alternate - (Brian B.)
Brian treats us to a vintage white jersey based on Buffalo's throwback thirds that they shouldn't have gotten rid of. I'm pretty much a fan of everything on this jersey except the yellow namebar and the number stitching. Took me a second to see the thin "white" stripes in the yellow stripes. I miss that script.

Rating: 8/10

Dallas Stars Concept - Brian B.
Brian put together a concept using the logos put together by Torch Creative. The logo is ok and the jersey, while not bad, doesn't look very Stars-y. Looks a lot like a Sabres jersey. I think maybe this could use the new color scheme the team might be using (Green black silver) and look better.

Rating: 7/10

Boston Bruins Concept - (David K.)
David gives Boston a set of jersey that doesn't look too different from their current jerseys. It's nice to see the yoke design stay intact. The only thing I have a problem with is the number color on each jersey. I'd swap it so it's yellow on black and black on white. The current setup would probably be hard to see.

Rating: 7/10

Baie-Comeau Drakkar Concept - (Dylan N.)
Looks like Mr. Wonka has dropped the name, but he did bring us a few concepts today, starting with this dandy set of unis. I like everything but the pants striping here, but make a white version of that blue and make the white jersey you make the alternate and this set is near perfect. Love that red, white yoke.

Rating: 8.5/10

Los Angeles Kings Alternate - (Dylan N.)
The second of Dylan's concept today give the Kings a mashup of throwback elements. The classic striping on the "Forum blue" jersey, the "Los Angeles" script across the hem, and the Crown log that's no longer on the front of the jerseys... boo.... Altogether, the jersey really looks nice.

Rating: 8/10

Montreal Canadiens Concept - (Stephane S.)
Stephane redesigns the Canadiens with a new chest stripe and arm length yoke stripes. Plus a new shoulder patch. Quite honestly, I like this new design. Not a huge fan of the very thin white stripes on the red, maybe make it a little thicker. Overall a pretty good lookin' set.

Rating: 7.5/10

Hartford Wolfpack Concept - (Jets96)
We will end today with the "Jets96 AHL Extravaganza" Very similar jerseys to the old Lady Liberty set so it makes sense to use the Wolfpack logo that emulates the Lady Liberty logo. Overall good jersey. Nothing to complain about here.

Rating: 8/10

Iowa Wild Concept - (Jets96)
Jets gives the Wild their own jerseys while staying true to the parent club's look. I really don't like the way all these colors interact with each other on these jerseys. The "logo" is hard to see on the red jersey too so maybe make that the wheat color.

Rating: 6/10

Cleveland Crusaders Concept - (Jets96)
Love the amount of purple here. Oh my, this set looks very nice. I can't get past the purple. I guess the only thing I could say about this to improve it would be change the number color. They're actually kind of difficult to make out from further away. And maybe show off the shoulder patch so we can see what it looks like. Jets, are you saying the Crusaders should make an AHL comeback?

Tuesday: Charlottetown Islanders Double Feature

Hello everyone.  Hopefully you'll all be able to make the live chat tonight, it should be a ton of fun.  It starts at 9pm EST.

There are currently two votes going on right now, the COTW, and the Bruins "Untouchables" Competition.  Votes are due bu Friday at 11:59 EST.

COTW May 20-26 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
"Untouchables" Bruins Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

New York Rangers (by Felix T.)
Felix brings back the very popular Lady Liberty logo, but pairs it with vintage white, which I'm not a fan of because the logo isn't vintage.  I also don't like the front number, it makes the logo and chest-stripe too low.  The sleeves also look too empty.  I do really like the sublimated "Lady Liberty's" on the hem of the home jersey, that's a cool, unique feature.  Overall I'd suggest to choose either vintage or modern, and make the whole jersey one or the other.  6.5/10

Toronto Maple Leafs (David K.)
Here's a very vintage home and road set for the Toronto Maple Leafs by David.  In my opinion, they're a bit too vintage for a regular home and road set, but these would be great if the NHL allowed two third jerseys (think 1997-99 Mighty Ducks).  Using the newer retro leaf as the crest, and using the 1967-70 logo are good choices, they help connect this look with the rest of the franchise's history.  My only suggestion would be to move up the top stripes against the shoulder yoke, then everything is a bit less crowded.  8/10

Indiana University (by Dave C.)
I believe Indiana University currently use Phoenix Coyotes template's (thank you google), so these jersey by Dave are an instant improvement just by using their own striping pattern.  The rest of the concepts good too.  The script-logos aren't the most unique or exciting, but they do certainly fit in with a lot of colleges and universities.  I wish I knew more about university hockey, then I would be able to give a better opinion on these.  8/10

Charlottetown Islanders (by Jason P.)
We saw two of Jason's Charlottetown Islanders concepts yesterday, and today we have another two.  This concept here uses the New York Islander's colour scheme, something I thought might happen before the team unveiled it's logo yesterday.  Like WinnipegJets96 yesterday, I also think the logos used for both concepts are awesome.  I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of originality in the jerseys, but then again a lot of CHL team's do this, so it does make it more realistic.  8/10

Charlottetown Islanders (by Jason P.)
Jason's second concept uses the San Jose Sharks colour scheme and jerseys (with some modification's).  I like this colour scheme for the Sharks, and it looks just as good here.  I also like the modification's to the jerseys.  My comments from above about the logos and jerseys also apply here.  8.5/10

Grand Rapids Griffins (by WinnipegJets96)
This is the first of three AHL concepts by WinnipegJets96 today.  He uses the Capitals template (with quite a few modifications) for the Grand Rapids Griffins.  The use of that template makes sense here, as the arm-panels look like wings.  The modifications also stop it from looking like a simple recolour.  8/10

Hamilton Bulldogs (by WinnipegJets96)
WinnipegJets96 also made these concepts for the Hamilton Bulldogs.  These take inspiration from the Canadiens, while also doing a lot of their own thing.  I think that's a great approach for an AHL team, especially when you have such a historical NHL franchise to be inspired by.  I like everything here.  8.5/10

Hershey Bears (by WinnipegJets96)
And here's a concept for the Hershey Bears, who last year unveiled these awesome logos and colour scheme.  WinnipegJets96 gives them a new striping pattern, getting rid of the piping and pit-stains from their current jersey, which is obviously a good move.  I also like how the lighter shade of brown was used as the main colour on the dark jersey.  8.5/10

Calgary Flames (by Mike S.)
We end today's post with two unique Flames concepts.  Mike's concept here is unique because of the main colour, I can't remember seeing a yellow Flames concept before.  It is very bright, but it doesn't look too bad.  I like how white isn't used at all, and I also like striping pattern is similar to the Flames original home jersey.  This would be even better if the arm-stripes were the same thickness as the hem-stripes.  8/10

Calgary Flames (by Dylan W.)
Here's the second Flames concept, this one by Dylan, and again it doesn't use any white.  It also uses flames instead of hem stripes, which I think is a great idea.  The colours are nice too, the red and yellow really pop against the black.  My only issue here is the readability of the numbers, but everything else looks good here.  8.5/10

Monday: P.E. Islanders Triple Feature

Hey guys, Happy Monday!

In news (sorry for not discussing this sooner) two teams are readying for new looks, the Dallas Stars and Carolina Hurricanes. I know Ryan discussed this yester day, but I wish to give my personal opinions on these logos

First let's discuss Dallas, who's logo was leaked Friday via a mobile app

Photos from

I personally don't like these logos, is this really the best they can come up with? The primary is meh, it's taking arguably the most recognizable logos in NHL history and making it just meh. It honestly looks more like a decent shoulder patch . As for the are my thoughts on roundel logos. I think they are the laziest logos a team can come up with. Insert a logo in a circle, surround it with their name (and thank goodness they didn't put the year of founding on it or I'd hate it beyond saving). I like to call them Wal-Mart t-shirt logos, as that's where I find them, or on bargain bin hats. I do like the colour scheme, but I would have preferred the Torch Creative logo was much better, and would have been a better option. What do you guys think of this logo, good, bad, eh like me?

On to Carolina, who are slowly unveiling their jerseys through hints via their Twitter.

Photos via Carolina Huricanes Twitter

So far all we've seen is a new font (upgrade) and a close up on the logo. I'm hoping for something exciting and fresh, Carolina hasn't changed their jerseys in their entire 14 year history, and could use something over their abysmal current jerseys. If I could guess what they are going to do, I'd think they will go with something Whalers related, but also have a Hurricanes twist. What do you guys think they will do? # NewStorm, spread it.

Finally, I just found out today the PEI Rockets are becoming the Charlottetown Islanders, and have unveiled their actual logo. Here it is: photo from

I like it. The Confederation Bridge is a true modern symbol of PEI and the fact the didn't copy the Islanders logo is a plus for me. The colours are eh, too Pittsburgh like for my taste, but none the less, a much more creative and appropriate name and logo for a team on the Isle of red sand

*EDIT (by Ryan)
I thought it could be fun for HJC readers to gather around their computers tomorrow night and watch Game 7 between San Jose and Los Angeles. To accompany that game we will be having a HJC Live Chat! I really don't have anything planned, so anything is on the table. It should be fun and I hope you can join me.

The HJC You tube channel seems to be moving a long, and in the next month, we will hopefully have a video ready for you guys. We have ideas for videos however, lets year your ideas. What jerseys should we review, what topics should we debate? ALL unveilings and site news will always be found on the blog first, as that is what HJC has always been, a blog.

Also, check out the HJC store, Memorial day sale is on right now 15% off your order with promo code 15offporduct, sale ends at 11:57 PST. Click on the banner above, 3 shirt designs up now for sale.

Trivia question: Has any professional sports team won a championship with the following colour scheme: Green, Blue and White? Any shades of these colours.

Anaheim Ducks Concept (By: Dylan W.)

Dylan gives the Ducks a new alternate, with a completely new striping pattern, am I the only one who thinks it looks like the Sydney Opera House? I like the presentation of this concept, concerning the authentic texture and logo. I think the striping is good, and the invisible yoke is great, which is something the Ducks can pull off well. The striping is great, Reebok seems to avoid swoops and curves but this would be a new look the NHL has never seen, and on a modern team none the less. (8.5/10)

Charlottetown Islanders Concepts (By: Jason P.)

Jason has two Islanders sets for the Rockets new name (I'm still mad fighting spuds wasn't a taken name, but I digress).  His logos are awesome but each have a different style of scipt. His first is a Hartford Whalers/ Vancouver Canucks style concept, and I like it. The logo is great for minor league and the third jersey is amazing. I think the striping could be a little more original, but it would be a million times better than the Rockets striping. (8/10)

Our 2nd Islanders concept uses my favourite colour scheme ever, and the logo looks better in there colours. The jerseys are based off the current Chicago Wolves jerseys and I like them, but, again, they could be more original in the striping. The third could also use a little more black, but designing your own logo is an awesome idea and kudos to you for doing it, Jason! (9/10 )

New York Islanders of Brooklyn Concept (By: Daniel P.)

Daniel gives the Islanders a total new, fresh look, increasing the orange and making striping simpler. The logo is okay, but kind of boring, I give Daniel credit for designing his own logo, but it looks more like a shoulder patch. The jerseys are a little boring, and I think all the stripes should be the same thickness. This is just a personal thing, but I think the Islanders should be a team dominated by blue, and an orange helmet stands out to me, blue would look better. It has potential, but as is, is a little boring as is. (6/10)

Charlotte Checkers Concept (By: Jets96)

I have 3 AHL concepts coming up I made, so I won't comment on them, hopefully you can give me back some feedback.

Chicago Wolves Concepts (By: Jets96)

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Concepts (By: Jets96)

Columbus Blue Jackets Concepts (By: Tyler G.)

Tyler changes Columbus's Eh jerseys into something a little more patriotic. Those who have seen Team America: World Police will know what song I'm thinking of, anyways, I like these! The home and road have a patriotic look, and I have always been a fan of coloured arms on white jerseys. The colours are all balanced well, and the current font go along well. I like the stars on the wrists, but they may be obstructed and could have be moved up a little bit. I also think the shoulder patch would be a better helmet logo. (9/10)

Acadie-Bathurst Titans Concepts (By: Dylan W.)

The Titans have a dated logo, that isn't horrible, but needs an update. Dylan provides a great update, and a new shape of shoulder yoke. The yoke seems to based on the Blues/Preds crapfest template, and that is one of the elements I like from the jersey. They look like leather armour. The colours are excellent and balanced very well. The striping is classic and yet somewhat unique. The TV numbers are a little too high up and too big, but that's king of minor. I also think the white jerseys should have red numbers. (9/10)

St. Louis Blues Concepts (By: Mike S.)

I'm sure everyone who reads this blog likes St. Louis Blues alternate, who doesn't, it is awesome, it is one of the best jerseys in the edge era, and the Blues should have jerseys based on it. I love the striping, no double blues, no dark notes on light jerseys, and it is great to see this done. The elimination of the roundel logo is great, because I hate roundel logos as I said earlier, and I don't think a shoulder patch is really necessary, maybe the trumpet logo? (8/10)

Atlanta Thrashers Concept (By: Felix T.)

I wouldn't have a problem with the Thrashers returning. Just not as the Jets. The Thrashers use way too many colours in their original primary logo, but this secondary logo is good colour wise. The jersey looks decent, but there are several problems. The NOB are too small, the sleeves are too bare, and the yoke seems unnecessary. I think a light blue jersey could work, but the jersey could use some revising. (6/10)
