Tuesday: PLAYOFFS!!!!!

Okay, I'll calm down now.  But in all seriousness I'm super excited for the playoffs.  It's like christmas morning, or a kid in a candy shop, or something like that.  I hope you all have the same feeling right now, because the Stanley Cup Playoffs are awesome.

Don't forget to vote for the COTW.  Also playoff picks are due today at 7:00pm EST.

COTW April 22-28 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
Playoff Pool picks (due Tuesday @ 7:00pm EST)

Here are the Hartford Wolf Pack contest entries that have come in so far...

(by Alan H.)

(by Jon El.)

(by Phil B.)

Kings vs. Ducks Outdoor Game (by Kyle C.)
This is what Kyle thinks the Kings and Ducks should wear for their (rumored) outdoor game next year.  I have to agree with him 100%, and I'll let you read his description to find out why.  The only negative about this concept is the lack of originality.  7.5/10

Quebec Nordiques logo (by Kyle S.)
With the Coyotes still without a buyer, it's possible that we could be seeing the Quebec Nordiques again.  Here Kyle takes a stab at updating the Nordiques logo.  At first glance I liked it, but after a closer look there are a few things that I think are downgrades.  The old logo formed an Igloo, which isn't here in this logo.  Also the stick shape in the old logo was a bit more natural.  But I am a big fan of the addition of Navy blue.  7/10

Dallas Stars (by E.Awad)
This seems to be a popular idea, changing the Stars' "Star Pattern" jersey into a more traditional striping pattern.  I like how the sleeve and hem stripes were made bolder, and how the Stars' brighter shade of gold was used.  My only issues are with the equipment, I'd recommend going with blank pants (because right now a colour is missing on each set of pants), just one set of gloves, and a white helmet for the white jersey.  7.5/10

Pensacola Ice Flyers (by Dylan W.)
The Ice Flyers have a good logo (especially for a minor league team), but their jerseys kind of suck.  Dylan makes their jerseys much more respectful and more unique (a rare combo).  Them hem striping is really cool how it mimics their logo.  I'm not sure I like the missing notch on the front, but I don't know what to recommend there.  The sleeve striping is okay, but I think the hem striping is so unique that it should also be used on the sleeves.  On final thing, I'm wondering if the road jersey is white or light grey.  I think it's good either way, I just couldn't tell which it was supposed to be.  8/10

Sudbury Wolves (by Derek H.)
The Sudbury Wolves currently have one of the worst logos ever.  Derek fixes that here with this concept, giving them a very respectable logo.  The jersey look nice too, I especially like the idea of a grey jersey.  Although I think that jersey would be better with a black yoke, instead of the phantom shoulder yoke used.  I also think the logo could use a white outline on that grey jersey.  But even without those changes it's still miles better than their current jerseys.  8/10

Toronto Maple Leafs (by Scott D.)
Scott combines different eras here with good results.  The sleeve/hem stripes are from 1967-70, the shoulder yokes are similar to the 1930-34 jerseys, and the logo is their current logo.  It's a very good, unified look.  I don't like the logo used on the pants though, it's too similar to their current logo for both be used.  8.5/10

Atlanta Thrasers (by Darren H.)
We haven't seen a Thrasers concept for a long time (since February), but Darren is here to change that.  All three jersey's are much more traditional than anything the Thrashers ever wore, but they still have some uniqueness, like the arrows in the stripes, and their unique fonts.  I always thought of the Thrasers of a blue team, but I like switching it up with the "Georgia Bronze" home jersey.  The road and third jerseys look good too.  My only suggestions are to add the arrows to the sleeve stripes on the primaries, and to keep "Georgia Bronze" in the third jersey logo.  8.5/10

Monday: Jets Miss, Go Isles and Leafs!

Happy Monday everyone...well, it's happy for those of you who's teams made the playoffs, but I won't be bitter, and I hope Blue Jackets fans aren't either, I feel for you guys, the Wild played terrible for the last week and a half and your team played with passion and fire, but Bobrovsky will hopefully get the Hart and/0r Vezina.

Because of the Jets being eliminated from the playoffs, thank you Montreal, I'll have to go to my 2nd favourite team in the NHL, the New York Islanders, and since I'm in the GTA, I have to root for the Leafs, I'll give my Playoff Predictions.

1.Pittsburgh Vs. New York Isle: Pittsburgh in 6
2.Montreal Vs.Ottawa : Ottawa in 7
3.Washington Vs. New York R: Washington in 6
4. Boston Vs. Toronto: Toronto in 6.

1. Chicago Vs. Minnesota: Chicago in 5
2. Anaheim Vs. Detroit: Anaheim in 6
3. Vancouver Vs. San Jose: Sharks in 7
4. St. Louis Vs. Los Angeles: St. Louis in 7

This may be the most entertaining post season in a few years, so hopefully you have your picks ready, as I'm sure this will be a hot button issue over the next few days.

COTW has again reset for the week, check out the new concepts in the COTW tab and remember if you have an e-mail, you can vote.

The HJC Playoff Hockey Poll is in full swing, so remember to send in your picks before the puck drops tomorrow.

2012 All Star Game Concepts (By: Brian B.)

The last All-Star Game in Ottawa was the first All Star Game I was actually interested in, and the only disappointing thing about it were the repeat jerseys, Brian fixes that. I like how the colour scheme matches the colours of Ottawa, which would be a neat idea, as they did it in 2004 in Minnesota, and with the new division system, the East and West coloured jerseys could be retired. The striping is great, and the stars on the arms is awesome. The only thing I don't like are the numbers, I've already stated I don't like San Jose's old font, and this looks very similar to it, Ottawa's font would be better, even their 3rd jersey font. (8.5/10)

Adirondack Phantoms Concepts (By: Andrew G.)

Our AHL specialist Andrew gives us a very purple concept for the Phantoms that will be moving to Leigh Valley next season. This would be a great look for the team, as gone are the Flyers copy jerseys, and purple is a primary colour. I think this is a step in the right direction, as every team in the AHL should have their own unique look, or at least have some original elements. The home and away are very well done, I'm not sure about the piping, however, it's not that bad. The alternate isn't that great, but it's decent, as I think a black alternate would be a great idea, just a little bit cookie cutter. (8/10)

Nashville Predators Concept (By: Bren R.)

On first appearance, the jersey looks like a very plain, boring jersey, with sleeves dipped in yellow paint. However, I think this jersey is meant to be a less is more look, and the logo gave that away. I can see what was trying to be done, however, this type of look is hard to get right. I would suggest an actual striping pattern and I'd move the name up closer to the yoke. (5/10)

Saginaw Spirit Concepts (By: Derek H.)

WOW, this reminds me of the old Rochester Americans jerseys from the 1950's and this would be perfect! The Spirit lack. Spirit, and I would love to see these on the ice. The elimination of the eagle logo is not preferred, but I think the white jersey could use a lot more blue on it, and the eagle logo could work on the front of the jersey. None the less, the idea would be neat, as patriotism in sports is a great idea. (7/10)

San Jose Sharks Concepts (By: Stephen T.)

Stephen has take the current Sharks jerseys, and made some changes. These include orange piping, spaced striping and less black. I love the idea of piping, as I think it looks good, surprisingly, and same with the spaced striping. The only suggestions I have with the concepts to add some spice, Shoulder patched and helmet logos would be great, the same thing goes for the pants, a logo or striping would spice it up. Execution note, the NOB is crooked. (7/10)

Minnesota Wild Concepts (By: Tyler G.)

With Minnesota getting a new road jersey this summer, Tyler gives them a solid re-design to help them look more uniform. The home jersey is just simply their current home with the full bear head logo, which looks amazing. The road looks decent, however, the arms need work. I can't see the TV numbers, they should be red, and a little more red wouldn't hurt the jersey. Also, I'd make a red version of the white socks and use them. (7.5/10)

Columbus Blue Jackets Concepts (By: Scott D.)

The Blue Jackets have turned things around, and that deserves a better look, the Jackets look way better in double blue, I know this, and Scott knows this. The home and road look great, Scott has a great ability, as do some other artists on making Cookie Cutter jerseys look better by adding unique elements to it. The shoulder patches are great, and are perfect for them as Ohio has a great shoulder patch shape (a lot of states do). I'm not huge on the alternate, however, I could see why other people would like it. (8.5/10)

Washington Capitals Concepts (By: Mason II)

WOW, I that because once again, this proves Washington can look way better than they do now, and that unused logo was really a missed opportunity. The logo looks great, the striping looks excellent, especially the lack of piping, and the weagle is used greatly to keep the modern look intact. The colours are well balance, and the white jersey has enough red and the red jersey has enough blue to keep the colours intact. No real problems, or imaginary ones, great all around concept. (9/10) COTW Nom. from me.

Saturday: Eight concepts, five artists

Yep, my luck of posting after Blackhawks games continues. The Hawks have clinched the President's trophy and tonight's game in St. Louis will feature a ton of players from the Rockford IceHogs getting some major league experience. No point in risking your stars when you have nothing left to play for, after all. On to the concepts.

New Jersey Devils (by Casey)

Casey has taken the Devils’ current design and changed the black out for green. I really don’t have much to say about the design since it’s not all that original (not that I mean that as an insult in any way) so there isn’t much to critique. I like the idea, though. It’s certainly better than the original red-and-green sweaters and would probably look good as a Devils alternate. Overall, I’ll give it a 7.5/10.

Ottawa 67's/Centennials (by Derek)

Here’s the first of Derek’s two OHL concepts – this one for an update to the Ottawa 67’s. He’s changed their name to the Ottawa Centennials, which is appropriate since the real team is named the 67’s in celebration of Canada’s centennial in 1967. I definitely like the color scheme, which is a good change from the ever-so-common red, white and black that so many teams use. However, I am concerned about the color balance. The black seems to be much more present on the red jersey than the white. Balancing that would improve the concept quite a bit. Overall, I’ll give it an 8/10.

Plymouth Whalers (by Derek)

Derek’s next concept is for one of the OHL’s three American teams, the Plymouth Whalers. Plymouth’s real-life logo is a complex logo that you’d expect from minor league hockey and to be honest, I’m not sure if the crossed harpoons work as a replacement. I think it’s mainly because of the colors. The brown and silver are both very dark so they don’t stand out well against the dark green. On the other hand, I do like the diagonal script on the white jersey. It’s too bad that the Rangers have a monopoly on that design in the NHL because I’m sure a few other teams could pull it off. Except Pittsburgh. Theirs didn’t look good. Overall, I’ll give it an 8/10.

Columbus Blue Jackets (by Mason)

Mason’s Columbus concept takes the design from the Ohio state flag and applies it in a striping pattern that, as far as I know, has no history in the NHL. I like to think I’m a traditionalist, but this is one non-traditional design that I actually like. So many teams adopt striping designs that are out of left field, but this one actually makes sense. It’s relevant to the team. Plus, Columbus’ red and blue color scheme really works. The red pops against the blue really well and this is a design I would not mind seeing as an alternate. It would work. My only critique is the template. I’m not sure why you went with that Edge design when a standard yoked design probably would have worked just as well. Overall, I’ll give it an 8.5/10.

Tampa Bay Lightning (by Mike)

Mike’s design is actually split up into two images, presumably because of size considerations. I’ve been on the record before as stating that I don’t like the Lightning’s current design since it’s obviously Steve Yzerman trying to make his team look like an Original Six squad, which they’re not – neither in history nor on-ice performance. The Lightning should be in a semi-modern design befitting the fact that they’re a relatively recent addition to the league and this fits the bill. That being said, I don’t think they should go crazily out there (see their first alternate) so this set would work really well for them. The striping motif is entirely appropriate and it’s a modern design that isn’t too modern. I especially love the gray alt. There has never been a gray jersey in the NHL and this one would look good on the ice. Gray and blue are a really good combination that work together. Overall, I’ll give it a 9/10.

Oakland Seals (by WinnipegJets96)

Jets’ concept is also split into two images, and while the third is quite easy on the eyes, the home and road are like a Don Cherry or Craig Sager suit. That’s not Jets’ fault, though. Blame that on Charlie Finley, the guy who bought the Seals, changed their name to the California Golden Seals and put them in green and yellow – like the two other sports teams he owned at the time, the Oakland A’s and the Memphis Tams. Fun fact: the Memphis Tams broke with standard basketball uniform traditions and at one point wore yellow jerseys with green pants. As for the design, eye-burning aside, I like the design. You can never go wrong with a simple design like this. Apart from some minor pixelation on the third’s logo, it’s a solid concept. Finally, this isn’t a critique but a suggestion: colors like that green tend to blend in with the gray outline used on these templates. The collar on the green jersey doesn’t really stand out well. It’s why I outline my templates in black. Overall, I’ll give it an 8/10.

Oshawa Motors concepts (Derek H.)
Derek has renamed the historical Oshawa Generals to the Oshawa Motors. While it would be considered blasphemy in Oshawa to do this for the sake of a concept here, at least it's creative. I always appreciate someone who creates their own logo, but it just doesn't seem to fit with this jersey. Also, I think the shades of red and blue used on the jerseys and the shoulder patch should be consistent. 7/10

Winnipeg Jets (Stephen T.)
Atlanta moved to Winnipeg and so Stephen took one of their jerseys too. This is well executed, but past that this one is hard for me to praise. Turning the Thrashers' home sweater into a set for the Jets isn't very creative in my opinion. Other than the nice execution I just don't know what there is to see here. 6/10

New York Islanders (WinnipegJets96)
WJ96 has made some alterations to the original Isles' Edge sweater. Those include the collar, numbers, and colours (obviously). For the four stripe shoulder patch I would have liked to of seen something done with said stripes. They're just a boring block sitting there. Perhaps try to make the shoulder patch look "pointy" or "sharp" like the pre-Edge 3rd jersey numbers used. Execution is good. 7/10

Sidney Crosby (Brian B.)
Brian has been going to school for digital art and this was one of his first ventures into Adobe Illustrator that he wanted to share. I'd say it's pretty good. The shadow on his face adds some realism and the wavy hair looks pretty good too. If it was terrible we'd all be looking at it wondering "who is that supposed to be?". Having said that, maybe Sid actually does have big lips, but this drawing really emphasizes that. Also, perhaps his teeth could be closer together? It looks like his parents couldn't afford braces. Either way, I wish Brian continued success with his quest to conquer Illustrator! 7.5/10

University of Massachusetts Lowell (MasonII)
Here is UMass' current set. This is a nice change by Mason, while still maintaining a classic look. The arrows/triangles on the stripes and collars are a good idea. Execution wise, currently they don't wrap around the arms. Instead they would appear like this; > > > < < <. I don't know what the intention was, but I'll assume they're supposed to go all the way around. 8/10

Chicago Blackhawks (Alex H.)
The feathers in the yokes is a GREAT idea... for a minor league team. I guess that's why this was an entry in the "Untouchables" competition. I like the stripes too. They are simple like the current Hawks' stripes yet obviously they are different. There are a few execution errors though. One is the different shades of red and black used on the jersey than the logo. The TV numbers are also way too small. The numbers on the back also appear to be small. The main idea of this jersey though is very creative. 7.5/10

Niagara Ice Dogs (Derek H.)
Derek continues with his OHL rebranding. Points again for creating your own logo, but that dog isn't intimidating anyone. Those eyes just have a blankness behind them which makes the dog look dopey. The shoulder patch ties the team to the St. John's Ice Caps of the AHL and I don't think that's a good idea. Finally, if the numbers on the blue jersey have an outline than I would like to see an outline on the numbers on the white jersey. I love the effort and creativity here, but it's just not working for me. 6.5/10

Mississippi Surge (Darren H.)
The Surge, of the SPHL, currently use Buffalo Sabres look-a-like jerseys. These are clearly much better. I really like how the home and road sweaters really use the brand well, yet they stay within the conventional lines of a reasonable jersey design. I then like how the alternate switches to a very traditional design. It's almost so traditional that the primary logo doesn't look like it belongs. Perhaps a fauxback logo would work even better here. Also, the white stripe under the yokes just gets lost and becomes irrelevant, in my opinion. What can I say, I'm a mark for Darren's work. COTW nom for sure! 8.5/10

Thursday: Push for the Playoffs and an NHL concept!

Hello everyone, welcome to HJC on this wonderful Thursday! I'm Tyler and today we have some awesome concepts to get too. I can't tell you all how stoked I am for the playoffs, especially since the Blackhawks are already the for-sure #1 seed in the playoffs. I'm hoping the Stars can sneak into the 8th spot so the Hawks can play here in Dallas, and maybe I can go to a game. I'm pretty sure the playoffs start on the 30th, so next time I talk to you, we will be in the playoffs! This season went by so fast. Anyway, let's get going.

Kingston Frontenacs OHL concept (By: Derek H.)

Derek starts us off today with a concept for the OHL's Kingston Frontenacs who had Bruins-esque uniforms and released new uniforms this past season. I feel that these concepts are partly inspired by them. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the changes that were made. I don't like the script logo, at least not as a primary logo on the white jersey. I know that this is how the jerseys really are, but I don't like how the yoke meets the arm, it looks odd to me. On an execution note, the word "Reebok" should be used instead of the actual Reebok logo and it should be black on the black jersey, IMO. Other then that, not bad. 7.5/10

Notre Dame NCAA concept (By: Mason II)

Our first of many college concepts today, Mason brings us the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The design in the striping is AWESOME. The ND logo works well. That's an awesome font as well! Awesome work Mason, no complaints. 9.5/10 and a COTW nom from me

Vermont NCAA concept (By: Bobby P.)

Our second college concept of the day, Bobby brings us Vermont. A very simple concept here. I like the  simple three-stripes. The "VERMONT" on the front looks great and the flag logo on the shoulder is great. No complaints. 8.5/10

Denver NCAA concept (By: Dylan W.)

Our THIRD college concept of the day, we have the Denver Pioneers by Dylan. Rather similar to the Wild's home jersey with an added stripe, I like it. On the away jersey, once again I don't like how the yokes and arms come together. The numbers are also too tall. No other complaints from me. Good job, Dylan. 7.5/10

London Knights OHL concept (By: Derek H.)

Derek's second concept of the day, he brings us the London Knights. I'm pretty sure the Knights currently have a ton of colors, and I like the simplification to just black, gold, grey, and white. I like the simple striping and the knight-head logo. I don't like the script on the shoulders though, try to make that into some type of logo. That number font is cool too. Other then that, awesome job. 8/10

Providence NCAA concept (By: Mason II)

Our FOURTH (and not last) college concept of the day, Mason brings us the Providence Friars. These are awesome. The striping is really cool and the lace-up collars look great. I even like the yoke on the white jersey. Execution is perfect as far as I can see and the Hurricanes font looks great. Great job today, Mason. 8.5/10

Rhode Island NCAA concept (By: Bobby P.)

Our fifth and final college concept of the day, Bobby brings us Rhode Island. I like the simple striping and the yokes on the white jersey. The font is nice. I'm not sure if the color is light purple or light forum blue, but it still looks good. The logo looks nice as well. Great execution, too. 7.5/10

Toronto Maple Leafs concept (By: Peter H.)

And lastly, it's our ONE NHL concept of the day! Peter brings us some Leafs concepts! The home and away being inspired by their current alternate, and the alternate being inspired the Leaf's white alternate from 2008-2011. I love the Leafs current set, but this one is pretty good too. I sort of see this as a lateral move, not better, but not worse. Maybe just keep it like it is and release that away jersey as a second alternate to go with the current alternate? On an execution note, the insides of the collars on the front should be blue on all jerseys rather than white. Other then that, great job. 7/10

Thanks for reading, have a good Friday everyone!
