COTW July 23-29 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

Longtime HJC contributor, WinnipegJets96 (or Jets96 for short) has started his own blog and wanted me to mention it. Check out

Bishop Guertin Cardinals concepts (by Brady)
Brady continues on with his New Hampshire high school re-designs. I believe that Brady said that the team already uses the Packers' logo, so it's kind of accepted there. I do wish the shoulder patch was red as it would stand out nicely and help this not be a Green Bay hockey sweater. 6/10

Greenville Road Warriors concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 7/10

Hartford Whalers concept (by Jeremy T.)
I like the font used for the NOB, but I think it would be very hard to read. I think that font would work excellently for a new Whalers' wordmark. The jersey is okay, but it could use stripes of some variety on the hem. 6/10

Colorado Avalanche concepts (by Deferoiler)
Bonus point to Deferoiler for attempting to create his own logo! I think the blue used here is too generic and screams MS Paint. I also think that the numbers on the blue jersey really could use an outline. I do really like the stripes on the home and road concepts. 7/10

Gotham City Rogues concepts (by Stephen T.)
I figured that I would get something related to Batman sent in. I'm not a comic book movie guy, but even I really enjoy this Batman series of movies (haven't seen the new one yet). The jerseys are nicely executed. I like the alternate, except for the Flames' hem striping. There's nothing wrong with the home and roads, but I just think they lack a bit of imagination. Anyone could have coloured any jersey yellow and black and called them Gotham City Rogues. 7/10

Nashville Predators concepts (by Ian)
I like the angled design on the arms, but I think somehow doing something similar on the hem would go great. I like the idea behind the alternate, but the checkerboard is so loud and gaudy. If somehow it could be toned down or your attention could be taken away from them a bit. Very good execution all around though. 7/10

Winter Classic concepts (by Tristan)
That's a really cool Leafs' Classic jersey. I just wish that an actual Leafs logo would appear on it somewhere, preferably the shoulders. The Wings jersey is okay, but the font on the front and used for the NOB is not good. It looks like the MAC font from the 90's. 7/10

Tampa Bay Lightning concepts (by WhiteLightning)
The home and road jerseys are great. Some small adjustments I'd make and they have to do with the outlines on the primary logos. On the blue jersey, I'd make the white outline thicker and on the white jersey I'd get rid of the blue outline, which seems useless on the black logo without any white between them. The alternate doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from the Sens' old 3rd. 7/10

Peoria Rivermen concept (by HJC)
This was my second entry into Peoria's fan jersey contest. I'm a big fan now of straight stripes on the yokes. I also packaged together a few elements from other Rivermen logos to create the shoulder patch.

Peoria Rivermen concept (by Scott M.)
I like the striping of the jersey, but I think you could add a lot more life to this if a logo were used in the primary location as opposed to the RIVS wordmark. I'm okay with the wordmark, but not as a primary in this situation. The execution and presentation is top notch. 8/10

Gwinnett Gladiators concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 6/10

New Jersey Devils concept (by Thallos)
I like the stripes and the sublimated flames on the cuffs are quite good. I think the numbers could be bolder. Also, the Devils don't have league approval to place their captain's letters on the right side of the jersey for their home and roads, thus they wouldn't get it for a third jersey using the same logo. 8/10

New York Islanders concept (by Justin C.)
Our HJC Open winner comes in with a Islanders 3rd jersey concept here. I've mentioned the positioning of the TV numbers before, so Justin knows. I like the 4 "championship" stripes on the arms, but I'm not a big fan of designs on the sides. I feel they get lost or covered by the players' arms. I like the NY logo on the pants and I think it could also be cool on the helmet. Finally, I just saw the four stripes on the back and inside of the collar, which further cements my thought that the side panel stripes should go away. 8/10

COTW July 23-29 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

As you can see at the top of the page is the banner for the new competition here on HJC. We are having a Florida Panthers 3rd jersey Comp! Lets create some Panthers 3rd jerseys before they come up with their own! Click that banner or go to the FLA COMP page for all of the rules.

On Thursday Kevin W. put in a request to have a Under Armor template put up. Here are the templates that came in.

(by Justin C.) *JPG file

(by MasonII)

(by Matt M.)

I personally prefer Mason's template because it's compatible with the collars from the "NHL Premiere Jersey Templates". That is the one that will be posted on the TEMPLATES page. If you want the others, get them now while they are here.

I had a couple of requests for blog mentions, so here we go.

Chuckie wanted me to mention his blog,

Also, Jesper wanted me to direct you to his blog,

It's one of those days where I don't have a lot of time (those are becoming more frequent), so comments will be quite brief. Please fill in the emptiness of this blog with your comments at the bottom.

Philadelphia Flyers concept (by John B.)
I'm not digging the Flyers script. Hem stripes look to be too low. I like the colours and stripes though. 6/10

New York Rangers logo (by Tristan)
Seems like something a street vendor would do and then try and sell the shirts to tourists, 3 for $20! On second viewing proper citing should have been done for the Statue of Liberty. 5/10

Minnesota Wild concept (by Kirk T.)
Colours + the primary logo make this seem more like a Silvertips concept than a Wild concept. It's like taking broccoli, adding sugar and saying it's candy. Nope, it's still broccoli. 6/10

Los Angeles Kings concept (by Jeremy T.)
Jeremy says this is a combination of eras. I like the idea of the main colours, but I think it needs a small trace of black trim. Right now it seems muted, like a rainy day. 7/10

Alaska Aces concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 7/10

Peoria Rivermen concept (by HJC)
I was trying to give the team a jersey that would be modern and stand out from the rest of the league. This is for their contest they just held as are the next two concepts.

Peoria Rivermen concept (by Jesper)
I like the multitude of stripes and I'm now very much a fan of stripes on the shoulders. I think those stripes would be more effective without the lighter blue yokes. 8/10

Peoria Rivermen concept (by Scott M.)
To me this just seems like a nicely executed, average looking jersey. No complaints, but nothing to rave about either. 7/10

Swift Current Broncos concepts (by WhiteLightning)
Fauxback third is the stars here. I think the other two would work better if it had hem stripes and they went along with the curve of the hem. Same pattern though as the side detail here. 7/10

Bishop Brady Giants concepts (by Brady)
Brady starts a re-design series here of New Hampshire high school hockey teams. I like the jerseys and the colours, but not the baseball team wordmark. Something original would be appreciated more. 7/10

Florida Everblades concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 7/10

The White Stripes concept (by Caz) *Description on concept. 8/10

Buffalo Sabres concepts (by Dylan)
I think the home and road are quite nice. It's the simplicity in the connection to the original sweaters that I like. I've never been a fan though of the Sabres ever wearing black. 8/10

Friday: Back-to-Back for Brian

The winner of the July 16-22 COTW vote, for the second week in a row, is Brian B. This is also the second week in a row that Brian has won with a Tampa Bay Lightning concept. You can see that winning concept on the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK page. Here are the results from the vote.
Brian B. - 5
WhiteL... - 2
Justin C. - 1

The OHL's Mississauga Steelheads revealed their "new" sweaters today. In a very smart move they are using the Toronto Maple Leafs' jerseys. Not just their jerseys though, they are going with a complete copy, head to toe, of the Leafs' unis. They went about it the proper way as well by getting permission from the NHL to outfit their team in Leafs gear.
I say it's a smart move because teams near Toronto that aren't the Leafs always get criticized for that if they fail. People say, "well no one went because they're not the Leafs". So, the Steelheads are going to embrace that they are in Leafs territory and form anything but an official alliance with the NHL club.

A lot of emails have come in this week and I haven't had time to get to a lot of them. That includes those of you who have applied to be a writer with HJC. I promise I will be crushing through those emails tonight, so you should have a response from me by Sunday at the latest.

If you want to be a writer for HJC, click the banner at the top of the page and read the instructions carefully. There are four writer's spots open.

Rouyn-Noranda Huskies concepts (by WhiteLightning)
The home and road concepts feature too many typical Reebok aspects and too much gradient for my tastes. The alternate, though featuring even more gradient, is my favourite of the three. However, it's all still too much gradient. 6/10

Dallas Stars concepts (by Stephen T.)
I like the white jersey and I would like the black an alternate. Major execution error though, why does Ribeiro turn into #36 on the front of the jerseys? As for the alternate that is here, it's a little dark and a bit to "Christmasy". To prevent that I would suggest adding a bit of gold trim. I'd also like to see the stripes arranged in the same order on the hem as they are on the arms. 5/10

Dallas Stars concept (by Tristan)
I really like this design as a potential third jersey for the Stars! The simple stripes fit with their current "less is more" look and the sublimated star is a great nod to their most popular jerseys. Just to fill out the jersey a bit more I would suggest placing the TV numbers in their usual location and not inside the stripes. 8/10

Hartford Whalers concepts (by Cody) *Description on concept. 7/10

Florida Panthers concept (by Justin N.)
The arm design leading into the side design is a really good idea. I just feel like this could use some white or even blue trim in those areas to help it look less like a practice jersey. Right now it's somewhere in between a practice jersey and a game jersey. 7/10

Florida Panthers concepts (by Jesper)
The alternate and road concepts are excellent, don't change a thing. On the home red jersey, it is also quite good, but I feel just it lacks some white. The other two jerseys use a double outline on the numbers effectively, but I feel that the red does not. Some white there would be good. 8/10

Montreal Canadiens concept (by Mazzz)
I like the jersey design here, which Mazzz intends as a fauxback. All of the different logos all over the place make it seem a bit cut and paste. If you just focused on one era with this jersey design then it could be a real winner. 7/10

Smashing Pumpkins concepts (by Caz) *Description on concept. 8/10
"Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins"
"Homer Simpson, smiling politely"

Colorado Avalanche concepts (by Brady)
I like this double blue direction that a lot of people want to take their Avs concepts in. Too bad double blue is being over used by other teams right now. I like all of the jerseys I just feel that the blue numbers on the dark blue jerseys would not be easy to see from the crowd or on TV. 7/10

Los Angeles Kings concepts (by Thallos)
These look really great! I'm a big fan of the current look so it would take a lot to sway me, but as concepts these are terrific. I'd like to see a thicker outline on the numbers as it's hard to notice the silver outline on the white jersey right now. Also execution wise, the wordmark does not appear on the back view of the cuff on the black jersey. 8/10

Toronto Maple Leafs concepts (by Dylan)
All of these are very good. No need to change anything on the third jersey. On the home and road I would just go with the current shoulder patch as opposed to having two different Leafs logos with text on the jersey. COTW nom from me, I'm such a homer. 9/10

Thursday: Last Day to Vote

COTW seems to be really struggling for votes this week. Perhaps it's because blog views are down a bit now because it's the summer and people are out of school or have less work. Not as much time for this blog, which is fair enough. If you do have the time and you're a Committee Member, email your vote in before midnight tonight (Thursday)
COTW July 16-22 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

Near the end of August, when my free time decreases significantly, I will need some writers to jump in and help out with the daily blog posts. I am taking applications right now and if you're interested in writing for HJC then click the banner at the top of the page and read all of the instructions carefully. I've already got a couple of apps thus far! I think the best thing about getting writers to help out will be that we'll get some new opinions on the blog. I get a bit of a sense that people get tired of hearing what I think. Fair enough. In total I'm looking for about 4 people to help. Not everyone who applies will be accepted.

Kevin W. contacted me and was looking for a template for Under Armor jerseys. I didn't even know they made hockey jerseys, but they do! Anyways, he was wondering if anyone would be interested in making a template for him. It would also be for everyone else as it would go on the TEMPLATES page with full credit to whoever drew it. Here's how Under Armor artistically represents their sweaters. I think it would be best if the template was made compatible with the collars from the "Reebok Premiere Jersey Template".

Oklahoma City Barons concepts (by WhiteLightning)
While the home and road concepts are very well executed, they are poorly designed. It's my opinion, but I feel like they would be as badly accepted as the original Oilers' Edge sweaters. The alternate, a play on Edmonton's pre-Edge 3rd jersey, is wonderful. It's different enough from the NHL version, but still ties in with the big club. 7/10

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Tristan)
Again, the hem trim doesn't work when there are already hem stripes. Plus, there are a whole bunch of loose blue pixels on the front view of the jersey. The white underneath the yellow stripes isn't my favourite, but I'm sure quite a few people would like it. I don't care for how there's quite a bit of black in the logo, but none on the jersey. 5/10

Chicago Blackhawks concept (by Ian)
I really, really like the striping on the arms. It reminds me of the sweater from the 1940's, but it's completely different. I personally like to see a very faint outline around logos with black backgrounds on black jerseys. It just gets the point across better that they are patches and not sublimated into the jersey. That's a personal preference though. 8/10

Cincinnati Cyclones concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 7/10

Peoria Rivermen concept (by Tyler G.)
This is an entry into the Rivermen's jersey contest from Tyler. The jersey is well executed, but a little too typically Reebok for my tastes. I would have also gone with the darker blue instead of the lighter blue on the jersey. Right now the whole sweater is just so damn happy and bubbly, like a bad kids show from the 80's. 7/10

Ottawa Senators concepts (by Mazzz)
I very much like the design of both jerseys! I don't like how they use two different crests. Yes, it has been done before, but I'm not a fan of it. Also, instead of using the Kings' font I would go with the current Sens font. Otherwise you could use something original, such as their is a font called "Kirsty", or you could use "Mighty Mighty Friars". 7/10

Toronto Maple Leafs concepts (by WhiteLightning)
These are really good and the following comments are only nitpicks from a die-hard Leafs fan. I love the alternate, but I'd prefer a white collar. The home and road are great as well I would just like to see collar laces. COTW nom from me! 8/10

Greendale Human Beings concepts (by Colin)
Colin says these are from the show "Community". I have never seen the show, so it would be very difficult for me to accurately comment on these. I'll leave the rating to the readers too.

Team Germany concepts (by Daniel)
Daniel has made some slight changes to the German's national team sweaters. The changes include getting rid of the black on some spots of the white jersey and decreasing the size of the sublimated eagle on the cuffs. The big addition is the "double black" dark jersey. It's a great idea for the German's, I just think the outline on the number needs to be thicker. 7/10

The Black Keys concept (by Caz) *Description on concept. 8/10

Philadelphia Flyers concept (by Kevin D.)
In the spirit of the unpopular "Black Ice" jerseys, Kevin has tried what he calls "Neon" jerseys. I like the idea and the potential for a team like the Flyers. This particular design doesn't grab me though. 8 out of 10 times classic jerseys work and the other two times is when an "unconventional" design works. For the Flyers you might as well say 10 out of 10 times a classic design works. That's how I feel anyways. 7/10
