Friday: Primary Colours, but not Primary School

Happy friday to you all! You've made it to the end of another week. Give yourselves a pat on the back.

Life is crazy for me today... it is the end of term at college, so we all know what I've been up to for the past few days (hint: it doesn't involve sleeping much)...So forgive me for today's short post.

Going on here on HJC:

NHL Expansion Jersey design contest

TONIGHT: Friday, November 30, 2012 @ 11:59pm EST

Rutgers NCAA concept (by Steven W.)

Like: This is a solid simple look, great for a college team. I like how the Nike logo, and that awesome Big 10 logo look on the front, not crowded or out of place at all.

Dislike: The main crest is a tad big, also, for college teams i honestly prefer a wordmark or big letter.

Suggestion: Try it with the R on the front, and the knight on the shoulders.

Rating: 7/10

Tennessee Titans concept (by Brian B.)

Likes: the striping patter works well for the Titans. I also kind of like that the logo os completely centred, not just the circle bit centred, it makes it a bit different.

Dislike: the space created by the completely centred logo. If there were other things going on, it might not be such a big deal... but as is it seems empty.

Suggestion: as much as I like the logo treatment, for this concept it might be better to centre the circle part of the logo... it could fix the empty space problem.

Rating: 7/10

Vancouver Canucks concept (by Stephen T.)

Likes: Honestly, not a whole lot. The V stripes on the bottom set of pants would be nice if they didn't cut off. As a Canucks fan, it warms my heart when someone takes a shot at the infamous flying Vs.

Dislikes: These colours are off, and that is the worst of it. The red is too brown... These are a hard jerseys to get right, and these unfortunately are not an improvement on the original flying Vs.

Suggestions: Use lighter (yellow, or white) numbers/letters on the red jersey. fix the colours... make the red lighter.

Rating: 5/10

CHL inter-league classic concept (by Jay V.)

Likes: Being a Vancouver Boy, that millionaires logo is the way to my heart. Good job making the Giants look millionaires and giants at the same time. Also, solid work making Sherbrooke look like they have been around for decades, rather than months... classic look. Also, love the vintage WHL logo.

Dislikes: Not much... sock stripes are a bit high. Not crazy about how the arm stripes and cuffs interact on the Phoenix jersey.

Suggestions: lower the sock stripes. swap the light blue and dark blue sleeve and hem stripes, so it goes dark blue, light blue, dark blue on the arms, rather than light, dark, dark... maybe mirror the arms on the hem adding a blue area at the bottom of the hem, same as there is on the cuffs.

Rating: 8/10.

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Scott D.)

Likes: All of these jerseys are solid. Love the logo treatment on the home and away, and the striping on the alternate. This would be a great set for buffalo

Dislikes: Not much. These are solid. Unfortunately for Scott, a similar concept from the Amazing Justin C. has come in today... I guess I really dislike having that stuck in my mind when writing this review.

Suggestions: Email Justin and coordinate your concepts? :) Also, I think a lace-up collar would look good on the alternate.

Rating: 8/10.

Michigan NCAA concept (by Alan H.)

Likes: love the shoulder yokes. Also, the simplicity of the special event uni is AWESOME.

Dislikes. The sock stripes.

Suggestions: Make the sock stripes match the arm stripes rather than the shoulder yokes. I think that would make the uniform as a whole look more cohesive.

Rating: 8/10

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Justin C.)

Likes: The logo... The team is called the Sabres, not the Buffalos (and if we want to get technical, that is a bison anyway...), so it makes sense to emphasize the swords. Also I LOVE when logos are place on the sleeve stripes like that. that always looks classy.

Dislikes: nothing really.

Suggestions: When placing logos on the sleeves, be aware of the bend of the arm. Think about if that logo will work there when the arm bends. Sometimes I like to move the stripes (with the logo on them) up the arm slightly, and place the numbers on the shoulders.

Rating: 9/10.

Oshawa Generals concept (by Ryan (HJC))

Likes: It is always a treat to get a concept from Ryan. There always well thought, clean, and professional. This one is no different. I like the nod to the senators, and the barber pole stripes (both are noticeable, but not overdone)

Dislikes: Honestly not much... this is nitpicking: I feel like the shoulder patch is more cohesive with the rest of the sweater than the main logo... probably because the main logo is only red and white, whereas every thing else is red, white, and blue.

Suggestion: maybe try to work a bit of blue into the main crest. make the stripe where "Generals" sits blue and the "Generals" lettering white to make this a bit more cohesive.

Rating: 9/10

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thursday: Football Hockey Jerseys

Hello everybody. I hope you have had a good Thursday so far. In NHL news, on Monday, the NHL and NHLPA agreed to have a federal mediator come in and help the two sides reach a deal. Well let's get to today's concepts. I will be trying out the like/dislike thing like Steven did yesterday.

The only vote going on right now is the COTW Nov. 19-25 vote. Check out the FIVE nominees by clicking the banner to the right or by clicking the "CONCEPT OF THE WEEK" page at the top.

COTW Nov 19-25  vote (ends TONIGHT @ 11:59pm EST)

NHL Expansion Contest Entries

Quebec Voyageurs entry (edited) - Tyler G.

Cincinnati Bengals concept (By: Brian B.)

Likes: The striping on the sleeves and on the pants, the font, and just about everything else.

Dislikes: The logo and the sock stripes

Suggestions: A logo like this one. -- 7/10

Detroit Lions concept (By: Brian B.)

Likes: The logo, the yokes, font and the striping.

Dislikes: That the striping doesn't match the real NFL jersey, and that it is different from the sleeves to the hem.

Suggestion: Use the stripes the NFL jersey has, and make it the same from hem to sleeve. -- 7/10

Washington Redskins concept (By: Dmitri G.)

Likes: The home jersey looks really good. I love the script and the striping there. Although I don't care for the logo as a patch on the home jersey. The font. The pants. The socks too.

Dislikes: The road uniform. I do like it, but it doesn't match the home jersey so it doesn't look right.

Suggestions: Make the road uniform like the home uniform and you're golden. Although use the indian logo on both jerseys, or use the script logo on both, and the indian logo as a shoulder patch or something. -- 6/10

CHL Inter-League Classic concept (By: Jay V.)

Likes: These uniforms look really classic and cool. Not much not to like here.

Dislikes: Get rid of the square yoke on the Seattle jersey. But that's pretty much it.

Suggestions: Add a thin white stripe under the black stripe on the Ottawa socks to match the hem stripes on the jersey. -- 8/10

Nashville Predators concept (By: Justin C.)

Likes: Just about everything here. The checkerboard pattern is awesome. NO complaints here.

Dislikes: Nothing.

Suggestions: Maybe add an away helmet, but that is it. -- 9.5/10 COTW nom from me

Oakland Seals concept (By: Stephen T.)

Likes: The arm and yoke striping. The logo, socks and pants look good as well.

Dislikes: The hem striping, and the execution on the hem striping. The grey stitching line should stop where it hits the actual hem striping. Also, the Reebok logo on the green jersey should be white, and the numbers on the back are too far apart, and there should be a name.

Suggestions: Fix the execution errors and the hem striping and this will be a great concept. 6/10

Minnesota Wild concept (By: Myself - Tyler G.)

The Wild have some of the best looks in the league. The thing is, they have 3 of them. So what I did here was give them one solid, continuous look. I chose the Alternate jersey to base these off of since that is what the Wild seem to favor and I think the fans also seem to favor it as well. It's hard to criticize your own stuff, so tell me what you think in the comments.

Have a good Friday!

Wednesday: Words and Concepts

Voting Reminders

Five concepts were nominated for COTW last week.  Now we need you're votes to determine who will win.  Vote, vote, vote...

COTW Nov 19-25 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

Contest Entries

Quebec Voyaguers, by Scott M:

Seattle Totems, by Scott M:

I'm going to try the new like/dislike (or good/bad) system for reviewing these concepts.  Although I'm not including suggestions, because my suggestions for all the concepts would be to change what I think is bad.  Let me know if I should keep using this system or go back to the regular way.

University of New Brunswick, by David K:
Good - All three jersey look like university jerseys.  By that I mean using wordmark's work very well for university teams, but not so much for NHL teams.  I also like the decision to drop black from the colour scheme.
Bad - I don't like how the home and road jerseys look so much like Red Wing jerseys.  In my opinion, something unique to the university would be much better.  7/10

Columbus Blue Jackets, by Darren H:

Good - Using the stripes from the current socks on the jerseys make a lot of sense.  The cuffs with the three stars look awesome.  The third jersey makes a good jersey, being different but still making sense as part of the teams identity.
Bad - I think their current logo is better than their original logo.  Also execution wise, the shoulder yoke on the road jersey is different on the back compare to the front.  8/10

CHL Inter-League Classic, by JayV:

Good - Both jerseys have a very "classic" look.  Even the league logos look retro.  There's lots of details that are really good.
Bad - The back numbers would benefit from being a bit larger.  Also a TV number is missing on the back view of the Armada's jersey.  I also think the stripes on the Generals jersey are too thin.  7/10

Winnipeg Jets, by Steven G (myself):
I tried to use as much from their current jerseys as possible while making this Jets third jersey concept.  I used their double stripes throughout this concept.  I also used their current equipment, fonts and logos.

Chicago Blackhawks, by Stephen T:
Good - The road jersey is good.  Using black on the cuffs and hem remind me of the Blackhawks 1958-59 jersey.
Bad - The home jersey isn't very good in my opinion.  I just don't think this striping pattern is anywhere near as good as their current jersey.  It doesn't pop as much, and the black stripes get lost in the red.  I also don't get the decision to axe their current shoulder logo.  7/10

Pittsburgh Steelers, by Dmitri G:
Good - This concept seems to capture the spirit of the football teams' jerseys very well.  I think the striping works even better on a hockey jersey than it does on a football jersey.
Bad - Yellow pants, while staying true to the Steelers look, just don't work in hockey.  8/10

Houston Texans, by Dmitri G:
Good - Once again this concept does very well at translating the football team's jersey onto a hockey uniform.  The shoulder stripes are very well done, and would be quite unique in hockey.
Bad - I'd recommend having an away helmet as well (same for this whole series), but I get why you didn't include it.
COTW nomination from me!!!  9/10

November 27, 2012

Tuesday: Blue is a popular color eh?

Hey everyone. If you haven't seen it yet, go to Icethetics and get a load of the Dallas Stars article up there. Pretty interesting read.

Also, there's FIVE COTW nominees this week, so voting committee, go vote!

COTW Nov 19-25  vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

Here's today's contest entries, both from HJC regular, Stephane

Dynamo Moscow KHL Concept (E. Awad)
What I Like: The color scheme is nice. I like the yellow piping on the arms.

What I Dislike: The template itself is not very good. It would probably work in Russia being most overseas jerseys are gaudy, but I think this concept could be better if a more traditional template was used. Also, the socks are very unoriginal.

Suggestions: More traditional striping, especially on the socks. A new number font would be nice too. Maybe something that fits with the logo better.

Rating: 5/10

Buffalo Bills Hockey Concept (Demetri G.)
What I Like: I critiqued a Bills jersey last week. I like how the striping on this concept is the same as their real jerseys.

What I Dislike: Same gripe as last week, the red jersey instead of blue, but it's my understanding the Bills fans like red. Also, not huge on the modern numbers, standard block would work fine for a football concept. Also, where's the dark helmet for the red jersey?

Suggestions: Blue jersey and block numbers would improve this concept

Rating: 6/10

NHL All Star Game Concept (Chris L.)      What's an All Star Game again?
What I Like: The vintage approach works well for All Star Games. The all star jerseys in Minnesota were fantastic. These are also fantastic. I like how these jerseys seem to be inspired by almost every All  Star jersey from the very first ASG, all the way to 1991

What I Dislike: The striping on the socks looks funny arched up like that. It should be straight to match the rest of the jersey. Also, the TV number placement is weird. At least on the back of the jerseys you included just a piece of them but the standard placement for concepts would look better.

Suggestions: Fix the socks and tv numbers. Maybe move the logo up and get rid of the two stars above it. maybe keep a star and put a Captains C in one.

Rating: 7/10

Denver Broncos Hockey Concept (Demetri G.)
What I Like:I like how this Reebok template really looks like the Broncos football jerseys. The arm stripe spike works too.

What I Dislike: The actual Broncos number font would have looked really cool on these jerseys. Also, there's almost no white on the dark jersey, but the sock is half white.

Suggestions: Switch the number font to the actual Broncos font, and change up that dark jersey sock.

Rating: 7/10

Seattle Lattes (Kyle C.)

What I Like: Very creative idea! The green and brown color scheme is very unique, and works geographically and fits well with the new identity. I like how the logo keeps its look.

What I Dislike: The number outlines are pretty busy, especially on the TV numbers

Suggestions: Fix the numbers, I feel like the white jersey's striping could lose the small white stripes.

Rating: 7/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept (Bastian S.)
What I Like: I personally like the double blue and gold.  I especially like it with the 90's Pen's template. I think I like the home jersey in this set more though.

What I Dislike: Something about the white jersey just isn't working for me. Other than that there's nothing I really don't like about this concept.

Suggestions: Maybe switch the dark and light blue around on the white jersey. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing the dark jersey here used as a third with their current set, but with the white jersey not working for me, I don't think I'd wanna see the Pens ditch black and gold just yet.

Rating: 7.5/10

St. Louis Blues Concept (Bastian S.)
What I Like: Wow, I love this set. The yellow yoke on the home is fantastic, and I love the red-less shoulder patch logo. I don't have a problem with the Blue's current jerseys but these blow them out of the water!

What I Dislike: Not one thing...

Suggestions: The only thing I would change is the collar insert on the blue jersey, Blue or Yellow would look way better than the current white insert.

Rating: 9/10     COTW NOM!

Monday: Let It Snow!

Hey guys, I'm in a great mood as Oakville just got some snow (flurries but still) and its hard for it to put anyone down, unless your shovelling it.

Here's a link to yesterday's weekend update, with a podcast! Answer the weekly poll, ask questions for the next possible podcast and see last week's winners.

COTW resets this week, all new concepts, check them out and comittee members can vote until thursday evening. Also in contests, the expansion contest moves into its concept phase, remember to submit you concept with the provided logos from Stephane and Hermilo, and make them look professional.

Here are some of the entries that have come in so far:

Tyler G.

Bastian S.

Jordan R.

In not so surprising news, the All Star game has been canceled in Columbus, and I'm sure not a lot of us (unless you like in Columbus) are too upset, and it will join the likes of 1994 and 2005.

Today's concepts feature a whole lick of alternates, Bastian gives us a Stars redesign and Chris L. gives the flying V a make over, lets dive in!

Jacksonville Jaguars Concept (By: Brian B.)

What I like: A lot to say the least, the unique yoke and claw marked stripes, the numbers that match the jag's actual numbers and the major incorperation of teal and gold.

What I don't like: The vector Reebok logo, the positioning of the t.v. numbers

Improvements: Use the script Reebok logo and put one tv number on each sleeve. (8/10)

Vancouver Canucks Concept (By: Canucklehead (cool e-pen name))
What I like: The Johnny Canuck logo is cool, the V pants are really cool. The use of green and the V striping that isn't the flying V.

What I don't like: The overlapping of the striping, the lack of white and the smallness of the logo

Imporvements: Put the striping on the jersey, not just over in (screening it), adding white and make the logo like 15% bigger. (6/10)

Colorado Avalanche Concepts (By: Snow Monster)

What Do I Like: The white alternate! it looks great! the striping works really nicely. The Maroon jersey is also cool, I like the yoke outline and most of the striping.

What Don't I Like: The lack of white on the maroon jersey

Improvements: Add a white stripe on the maroon jersey, and I'm flattered but I didn't make template. (7/10)

Dallas Stars Concept (By: Bastian S.)

What I Like: The green, yellow and white is a classic colours scheme, the execution. The addition of silver is good too for seperation.

What I don't like: Not much, the lack of yellow and silver on the pants.

Imporvements: Make the pants the same striping as the green jersey. (8.5/10)

Boston Bruins Concept (By: Keens O.)

What I like: The Winnie the Pooh logo is great. The blueish black being used (a classic Boston colour), The through-back logo is awespme, the striping, almost bee like.

What don't I like: The lack of white on the arms.

Improvements: Add white in between the stripes (9/10)

Vancouver Canucks Concepts (By: Chris L.)

What I like: The come back of the flying V. The transition into blue white and green is done well. The 3rd is good but has some updates. The arm patches with the whale head/ stick in rink logo)

What don't I like: The execution of the shoulder patches (The shouldn't be whole)

Improvements: Cut the shoulder patches in half (9/10)

Philadelphia Flyers Concept (By: Justin C.)

What I Like: The striping, the new logo that takes shots from the classic logo. The Justin signature execution (as in its really really good)/

What Don't I Like: The way Justin does the T.V. numbers, I know its how he does it so don't take that too hard. The thing around the A.

Improvements: Do the T.V. numbers regularlys and get rid of the "shield". (9/10)

Colorado Avalanche Concept (By: Alan H.)

What I Like: ANYTHING is better than what Colorado's current look.. The creativity in the yokes and striping, shots from the pre edge look.

What I don't like: The lack of black on the number.

Imrpovments, add some faint black to the numbers (9.5/10) COTW Nom. from me!
