Monday: It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad League!

Hey Guys, here's to the last week of waiting before the most wonderful day of the year (to me anyways).

Heres a link to this weekend's update.

COTW is reset for the week, there are 3 concepts up this week and hopefully this will be a very competitive week in the voting ways. Voting ends Thursday.

The Winnipeg Jets third jersey contest is entering its voting phase, anyone can vote who entered, and votes are needed by Friday.

COTW Dec 10-16 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)

Winnipeg Jets 3rd Jersey Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

In NHL news...I can't even explain to you whats going on, its just a mess!

Let's jump right into today's concepts as that's why your here.

Team Finland Concepts (By: Bastian S.)

Bastian brings us his first of two IIHF concepts today, I'm not sure if these are because of the upcoming World Juniors but I like these. The double blue works really well, the sleeves sort of remind me of Detroit, in a good way. The striping is good and simple and I think its good that the SUOMI is kept on the bottom of the logo. The only thing I'd change is adding a more detailed striping to the pants (8.5/10)

Indiana Pacers Concept (By: Mike S.)

First off, same thing every one has said about the numbers and name, I'd use actual players' names or a tag of some work. The jersey itself is okay, it sort of reminds me of what the Pacers wear, but still is its own thing. I think a shoulder patch is desperately needed, as it gives some identity to it, as well as some T.V. numbers, what with this being a hockey jersey first. (6/10)

Washington Capitals Concept (By: E.Awad)

There's quite a bit to like on this concept, but it has one fatal flaw. The execution is good, The overall design is really good, especially the double yoke outline and the idea of another red jersey isn't such a bad idea. The fatal flaw is the logo, and some people may actually like it, which is fine, but the Weagle IS a shoulder patch, and only a shoulder patch, I really think a re-coloured White House logo and more stars would make this perfect, but still, its okay. (8/10)

Boston Bruins Concept (By: Snowmonster)

\This one from Snow Monster is...odd? I mean, it looks like it should either use ONLY black or ONLY brown. Its and okay concept and a neat idea but it needs some work on it. First off the Reebok logo should be the script instead of the vector. I feel there should be more yellow to make this different from their current jerseys. Maybe something along the lines of this (6/10)

Calgary Flames Concepts (By: Adam H.)

There are some interesting ideas here, and I really think the hat and horse should come back (or combine the two). That being said there's some stuff to fix here. First off, I'd only use just the red pants or just the black pants on the home and road. The Calgary C is a need idea for the captain's C, but that would make two C's and a little cluttered. The logos are also Ginormous and I fell the white jersey needs more yellow. The striping is good though and I feel with a little TLC, these concepts will be good (6.5/10)

Oklahoma City Stars Concepts (By: Alan H.)

Alan brings us another concept of booting the Barons from OKC and putting the Stars, actually...Texas Barons sounds awesome. The concept looks pretty good, the concept logo is done well and the striping is neat. The numbers are nice, sort of L.A. like and the yoke stripes are cool. If I were to make improvements, I'd add a little more green than black. (8.5/10)

Team Canada Concepts (By: Bastian S.)

WOW! I am surprised what a difference the gold makes. I love Canada's current jerseys, and like the black from the early 2000's, BUT, this is so good. Gold and Red go together so well, and it's fitting, sorry American readers, I'm Canadian  (But Red, White, Blue and Gold would look decent). I can't really think of any improvements, since it looks this good. (9/10) COTW Nom. From Me.

Jets96 (CAR) - 1

The nominees for the Dec 10-16 COTW vote have been listed. You can see those concepts by clicking on the banner on the side of the page or you can go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. Committee Members, this vote ends on Thursday @ 11:59pm EST.

The Winnipeg Jets 3rd Jersey Top 5 vote is underway. I've changed the voting rules for this one. Not only can Committee members vote, but anyone who entered a concept into the competition can vote! Be sure to check out all of the voting rules by clicking the banner at the top of the page. You can also see the entries there too.

For next year, I will be slightly altering the rules for voting. First, almost all voting deadlines will now be moved to the end of Friday. That included the COTW votes, which typically end on Thursdays. I will also be doing away with the Voting Committee and instead will allow anyone to email their vote into me. Hopefully this will increases the amount of votes that are cast each week. This doesn't take effect until next year, but I thought I would get that info out now anyways.

I have created the logo for the 2012 Concept of the Year!

I only received one concept from a HJC reader.
That was done by Anthony C. I like it, but I decided to move away from a standard circle logo.

Anyways, the official logo will be on the plaque given to person who creates the Concept of the Year. That will be decided in about a month. That winner will also receive an out-of-date HJC t-shirt (woo-hoo)!

Friday: a weekend get-away to Quebec sounds nice doesn't it?

Wow guys, it seems like I have been really busy for the past few weeks, and I guess with the holiday season now upon us, it is no different this week. So please forgive my short post today.

Here is what is still going on here on HJC

COTY November vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
Jets Third Jersey Competition Entries DUE Friday @ 11:59pm EST

Today's concepts:

Quebec Voyageurs (by Andrew G.)

These sweaters are fairly simple, and perhaps come across as a bit too simple or empty. However, I really like how the half arm stripes are put on the outside of the sleeve... I can't believe Reebok thought it was better to put them on the inside of the arms (eg. old oilers unis, current panthers unis). 7/10.

Quebec Nordiques (by Bastian S.)

Although a Phoenix re-location seems out of the question, these sweaters have nice nods to both teams. the quebec stuff is obvious, and fairly standard for what we have come to see on nordiques concepts... although I would suggest putting the fleur de lys on the hem stripes, or getting rid of the hem stripes, it seems a bit crowded to me. the Phoenix reference is subtle, but check out the shoulder patch. does this ring a bell? 7/10, and a COTW nom from me, simply because of that clever shoulder patch.

Quebec Voyageurs (by Caz W.)

I like these sweaters (i particularly like the fleur de lys in the hem stripe... that is a really cool look). my one gripe is that the colour hierarchy in the logos does not match the colour hierarchy in the sweaters... I would have featured more of the medium blue. 7/10.

Detroit Red Wings (by Stephen T.)

not a bad looking concept. For me I would get rid of the yoke and add a chest stripe or a hem stripe, without some customization (as is) this concept is a fill bucket job, which I don't like to see. granted this template is a bit tricky to figure out (in terms of rotating stripes and numbers correctly, but that shouldn't be a reason to not try to customize the sweater a bit. 4/10.

HC Sibir Novosibirisk (by E. Awad)

I have really been enjoying this KHL series. HC Sibir has an awesome logo which to me is a cartoony Russian Knock-off of the Habs logo. The jerseys are simple and clean, but I would add a yoke to the white jersey because it currently seems a bit empty. 7/10.

Metallurg Novokuznetsk (by E. Awad)

These jerseys are really cool and angular (matching the logo well). The striping on the socks would only show the bottom black stripe with the white above it, if you wanted the full stripe to be visible, make the stripes thinner. 7/10.

Barrie Colts (by Ryan (HJC))

I really like the arm striping on this sweater. it is both  traditional and fresh at the same time. The motif of the thin horizontal stripes is really strong throughout these sweater. I like that horizontals show up on the arms, then the hem, then at the bottom of the pant legs, then in the sock. My one change I can think to make to this is to have the sock striping match the arm stripes. overall a great look. 8/10.

enjoy your weekend everyone!

Thursday: NHL, KHL, and more!

Hello everybody, hope you've had a great Thursday so far. In NHL news, the NHL and NHLPA met yesterday in an undisclosed location for the first time since last week's roller coaster of emotions and optimism. Hopefully they can get something going, and not have it crash and burn like it has the last few times.

HJC voting committee members, there are two votes going on right now so don't forget to vote!

Jets comp entry (Kyle C.)

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl KHL concept (By: E.Awad)

We all know the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl because of the tragic plane crash that killed it's whole team back in September of 2011. Tragedy aside, I really like these. The collar, striping, logos, everything looks pretty good. My only complaint would be a lack of red on the white jersey. Maybe add it under the stripes like the socks, but I think it needs more red. Execution is amazing, props for taking time to put the ads on the jersey and the 07.09 patch is a really nice touch. 9/10

Minnesota Wild concept (By: Matt L.)

There is just too much going on here. I count at least 5 or 6 colors. There is also a ton of execution errors. Too point out a few, the jerseys need TV numbers, the red jersey needs a name on the back. Back to the design, side panels never work in my opinion. Just go with the striping, get rid of black. Find a different font (I don't think either of them work good here). Look at the " TUTORIALS" page for some tips on how to make this look a lot better. 4/10

Donbass Donetsk KHL (By: E.Awad)

Another really sweet KHL concept from E.Awad here. The bruins yoke really works here. The only thing I don't like is the lack of black on the white jersey. Add some black under the arm stripes (like the hem stripes). Once again, great job with the ads. The socks need to be fixed to match the jersey better. 8/10

Channel Islands Riptide concept (By: Kyle C.)

Apparently these are for Kyle's brother's team in California. I was able to find the website for the team, see it here. Anyway, I LOVE these. The striping and yokes are perfect. The alternate is really cool and classic too. Maybe these could work as throwbacks for the LA Kings? On an execution note, you need to delete the NHL logo on the collar insert. Other then that, I love these! 9/10

Winnipeg Jets concept (By: Alan H.)

I like these and they are very unique. The light blue seems out of place to me on the home jersey. No other complaints from me. The logos and alternate jersey are pretty cool as well. 7/10

Minnesota Wild concept (By: Andrew G.)

Here is our second and final Minnesota Wild concept of the day. This one I like a lot better. Based off of the Wild's current alternate jersey, but with an added road jersey to go with it. I would love for the Wild to go somewhere in this direction. Execution-wise these jerseys need TV numbers and names on the back. Also, the word "Reebok" should be on the back under the collar instead of the Reebok logo. I like the recoloring of the logos. Some type of shoulder patch would be nice too. 7/10

Colorado Rockies concept (By: Steven G.)

We saw this concept originally last Friday, but last time it's main color was yellow. It is now red and I love it! If the Rockies were too ever come back, these would HAVE to be their uniforms. The logos are all great. The chest stripes, collar, and everything are perfect here. 9/10 and a COTW nom from me

Have a great Friday and thanks for reading!

Wednesday: 12/12/12

Today is the 12th day of the 12th month of 2012.  Crazy isn't it?  I tried to have this posted at 12:12pm, but I didn't have it finished yet.

Committee members, don't forget to vote.

Christmas concept (by Bren R.)
Good:  I love the Christmas spirit of these concepts.  The names on the back of the concepts are very clever, although I don't know how Rudolph would hold a hockey stick.
Bad:  I hat to say it, but I'm going to be a bit of a scrooge critiquing these concepts.  The jerseys look like the fill-tool was used, instead of actually having stripes.  There name and numbers on the red jersey would be almost impossible to read, and the only TV numbers are on the front view of that jersey.  Also the shoulder logos only appear on the front view of the jerseys.  I'd recommend taking a look at these helpful tutorial's Ryan made.  5/10

Calgary Flames (by Andrew G.)
Good:  I'm not the biggest fan of the Calgary's jersey template, but this jersey would definitely fit in with their home and road.  I like black jerseys for the flames, the red and yellow seem to stand out better.  The horse head is a much better shoulder logo than their current flags.
Bad:  I'd recommend yellow numbers for better readability.  Also, execution wise, the shoulder logos, should be split exactly in half.  7/10

Los Angeles Clippers (by Mike S.)
Good:  The fact that the arm-stripes are inspired by the basketball team's jerseys is something I like.
Bad:  Even though I like the idea of the arm-stripes, I have no clue if they would look good on the ice.  I think parts of that striping could be too thin.  The hem-stripes are a bit too high up.  6/10

Sarnia Sting (by WinnipegJets96)
Good:  Yellow seems to be more popular recently, and I think it looks great here as the main colour.
Bad:  The striping seems very boring and un-inspired.  To me it looks like a recolour of Jets96's Niagara Ice Dogs concept that was posted yesterday.  I'd also like to see TV numbers.  6/10

Quebec Voyageurs (by CaliSel78)
Good:  The striping patterns on all the jerseys are quite modern and unique.  Especially the "fleur de lis" third, which actually took me quite a while to figure out what it was.
Bad:  The colour hierarchy doesn't seem to match between the home and road.  The road jersey has lots of pale blue, while the home jersey is mostly medium and navy blue.  8/10

Windsor Spitfires (by WinnipegJets96)
Good:  These jerseys would give the spitfires a look of their own, instead of copying the Washington Capital's look.
Bad:  Besides no TV numbers, and a few other execution errors mentioned by Dylan yesterday, I have no complaints.  8/10

Atlant Moscow (by E.Awad)
Good:  That wordmark logo really catches my eye, in a good way.  It's shiny!!!  The striping looks nice on all three jerseys.
Bad:  Not much too dislike.  I don't really understand why there are two colour schemes, but maybe that's just because I know nothing about the KHL.  Also the socks are huge compared to the rest of the equipment, and the sock stripes are too high up.  Still a COTW nomination from me!!!  8/10

Tuesday: The JETS96 Show!!!

Happy Tuesday Everyone! I hope everyone is starting to get in the holiday spirit! I know I am. The post is late today because I ran to the local mall to do my Secret Santa shopping for my hockey team. I went at about 1:30 in the afternoon thinking that'd be a great time since kids are in school and the mall should be dead........... nope.... it was a terrible experience and was there for hours against my will.

Other than that, no real jersey news that I know of. Personally I'm a little disappointed because the Rockford Icehogs wear a specialty jersey every year to be auctioned off for charity and they always do a nice job, but I think the "Los Icehogs" jerseys that they wore a few weeks back was their choice for that auction this year, which is saddening because....well... those jerseys were bad. But it's minor league hockey, and there's been worse jerseys so... yeah, anyway, A LOT of contest entries for today plus a few regular concepts, including THREE from our very own Jets96!

Voting reminders:
COTW Dec 3-9 vote (ends Thursday @ 11:59pm EST)
COTY-November vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

And now onto the regular concepts
Ottawa Senators Concept (Chris S.)
What I Like: I idea of the concept. It's a very simple and basic jersey concept with a unique twist. It's nice to see someone try this idea with out making it very cluttered.

What I Dislike: The execution. Obviously done on Paint. The striping is very uneven.

Suggestions: Add Gold as a trim color as to give the team a unique color scheme and to keep a little balance between the jersey colors and logo colors. Also, use a new program. There's a few free online programs that would be pretty easy to learn or even something for free like Gimp. Use a template from the TEMPLATES page and read the tutorials to make this concept look a bit more professional. Keep it up! I like where this is headed.

Rating: 5/10

Detroit Red Wings Concept (Jordan R.)

What I Like: The description of the concept, I like when people describe what they've done and why. It's nice to see inside some artists heads. Keeping the red arms on the white jersey. I hate the Wings but I think their white jersey is one of the best in the league. The logo.

What I Dislike: The inconsistency between the arm and hem stripes with the chest stripe.

Suggestions: Either add two small stripes to the arms and hem or get rid of the two small stripes on the chest. I like the idea of one of these as a current third jersey. If that was the case, a shoulder patch of the current logo would be nice, but not necessary.

Rating: 8/10

Golden State Warriors Hockey Concept (Mike S.)

What I Like: The striping seems to be taking inspiration from the bridge in the logo. The addition of the NBA logo on the collar insert.

What I Dislike: The hem stripe. Lack of TV numbers.

Suggestions: It's hard to make a concept based on a basketball jersey since they are so boring and I think this is a nice job. I'd ditch the hem stripe and add TV numbers. An actual name on the back would be nice, but oh well. Also, make the logo a little bigger. One more thing.... THIS LOGO or THIS LOGO would look nice as a shoulder patch.

Rating: 7/10

Colorado Avalanche Concept (Snow Monster)

What I Like: The simplified striping. I miss the mountain look you had before, but this still looks nice.

What I Dislike: No logo. I love the Avs' logo. If you must have the wordmark, add the A as a shoulder patch. The color of the "COLORADO" and the TV numbers don't match. The yoke on the dark jersey.

Suggestions: One thing that I think would look very cool, is if you tried to make a gradation of dark to light on the arms using the stripes. I did it on a Panthers third jersey a while back and loved the look I've been trying to find a way to use it with other teams to find a better match. So far, no luck. Maybe on the white jersey here.

Rating: 6/10

Mississauga Steelheads Concept (Jets96)

What I Like: The set doesn't copy the Maple Leafs.

What I Dislike: Lack of tv numbers, but does the CHL need those? I don't know the rule on that. I'm very iffy on the white yoke on the dark jersey.

Suggestions: Find a way to center the chest logo. I don't know what program you're using, and I know what you're going for, it just looks odd and would look more professional. Even if you had to cut off part of the logo, it would still look fine.  The OHL logo should be a contrasting team color on each jersey.

Rating: 6/10

Niagra Icedogs Concept (Jets 96)

What I Like: Classy look. Little "Devil"-ish but that's ok.

What I Dislike: Gray's unique, I'll give you that. It just looks silly. Especially with the lack of gray in the jersey itself.

Suggestions: I know the dog has gray pants, but he's a dog and is color blind. Maybe give him black pants so the player can wear those. Either way, Black or bust. The OHL logo should be a contrasting team color on each jersey.

Rating: 7/10

Ottawa 67's Concept (Jets96)

What I Like: I actually really like their barber pole arms that they use, but you're using a template that I actually really like. I don't care what people say, I like it. I also like the white stripes on the black jersey so the striping between the jerseys is exactly the same.

What I Dislike: Nothing, I really like this set, and think it may be the best in your series.

Suggestions:  ONLY thing I would change is try adding the striping pattern to the side of the pants. The OHL logo should be a contrasting team color on each jersey.

Rating: 8/10 and a COTW nom from me!
