Lots and Lots of Concepts

Courtesy ColorWerx, here are the official images of the new Ottawa Senators shoulder patches. And the patch found on the pants of the alternate sweater.

I also have to remind Committee Members to get their COTW vote in before Thursday @ 11:59pm EST.

Also Committee Members can get their "Top 5" votes in for the Pittsburgh and Toronto DHL entries. That ends on Sunday @ 11:59pm EST.

On weekends, starting this weekend, I will be posting tutorials. If you have an idea for a tutorial or you want to write one yourself, leave a comment at the end of this post or email me.

I asked yesterday and didn't get much response, so I will ask again if you guys are interested in doing a create-your-own arena competition? It would only require a seating chart.

Minnesota Wild concept (by Jeremy)Not too bad of a jersey design here. A couple things that I think would make it look better are a vintage white collar and the use of the classic circle logo as the primary crest. There are some uncoloured pixels on the collar and some random pixels in the arm stripes. Just need to clean this up a bit.

Columbus Blue Jackets concept (by Brian B.)This is a vintage white version of the Jackets' 3rd jersey. Where are the TV numbers? I get if you don't feel like doing them (I guess), but if that's the case then only send in the front of the jersey. You would also want to fluff up your image so that it doesn't look so boring.

New York Islanders concept (by Brandon S.)I like the striping of the jersey. The use of the 2 shades of Islanders' blue looks good. I say that because I have a similar concept coming up soon. I like the direction of the logo, but I think it would be better if it wasn't enclosed in the crest. If it was the wordmark, same as the real 3rd jersey, and the NY with the island in place of where the numbers is on the 3rd, that would be cool!

St. Louis Blues concepts (by WhiteLightning)I love the home and road jerseys! I think that trumpet logo is IDEAL as a shoulder patch. Then just as the home and road sweaters suck me in, the 3rd jersey loses me. I'm not a fan of the logo in white or the outlined yoke. The jersey just looks a little too plain for me.

Chicago Blackhawks concepts (by Steven G.)Steven takes the Hawks in a new direction here. I really like how the simplified shoulder patch looks on these concepts. I like the use of it on the arm stripes as well. That's something I'd like to see from the Hawks if there is to be a new 3rd jersey in the future.

New Jersey Devils concepts (by Matt V.)This is Matt's first contribution to HJC and I think he's done a really great job! You don't see too many Devils concepts and I think that's because they have it pretty close to perfect right now. These concepts are inspired by the sweaters of the 80's and I think that really shows well on the road jersey (my favourite). I'm not really liking the Classic sweater though. It's not bad, but it's just so typical. Either way, this set is great and gets a COTW nomination from me!

Brooklyn & Vancouver Entries #1

I will start by reminding Committee Members of a couple of votes going on right now.

There's the COTW vote which runs until Thursday @ 11:59pm EST. Nominees are on the left side of the page.

"Top 5" voting is also continuing for the DHL's Pittsburgh & Toronto entries. That vote ends on Sunday @ 11:59pm EST. Go to the DHL page and click on the team names for the gallery of entries.

I would like to start posting some tutorials on the weekends, beginning with this upcoming weekend. If you have anything in mind that you'd think would make for a good tutorial, post a comment or email me. If you would like to write a tutorial to be posted, please do and I will post it on an upcoming weekend.

Also, I was thinking that a create-your-own arena contest might be cool, but I didn't know if you guys would be interested. It would require just a seating plan. If you would or wouldn't be interested please leave a comment at the end of this post.

We are currently on the last two teams for the DHL. Is everyone done with the competition after this block of teams or should it continue with more teams? Perhaps a DHL Winter Classic competition or even DHL All Star Game jerseys?

Here is the blank template for the New York Rangers Winter Classic sweater. This and other blank template can be found on the link on the TEMPLATES page titles "NHL Team Templates". 24 hours after the release and I still really like this jersey. I like that it is simple and classic yet no one was able to predict it. I like that they went with the darker colours from the 3rd jersey and I like that it is vintage white, but it isn't overbearing. I'd have to give it an 8/10!

Columbus Blue Jackets concept (by Jeremy)This is a cool idea for a jersey, but there are some execution issues with the concept. The collar has some uncoloured pixels. The arm stripes and logo look very pixelated. Saving as PNG and working in a program that isn't MS Paint will help that. The hem at the front is vintage white, but on the back it is pure white. Inside the front collar has also been left pure white and the Reebok logo on the back has not been coloured.

Chicago Blackhawks concept (by Torin)Again, this could be a great looking jersey, with the combo of eras, but there are some execution issues. We have a pixelated logo that uses a different shade of black than the jersey does. There are uncoloured pixels at the tip of the collar and in the outside corners of the front hem. The tail hem has also been cut off in the image.

Ottawa Senators concepts (by Kyle C.)I like this set of Sens jerseys. First the things I don't like. The use of the old number and NOB font and that on the white jersey the yoke is outline with red on the front, but white on the back. What I do like is how the shoulder patches are stretched farther in the yokes and the curved stripes on the arms.

Philadelphia Flyers concepts (by WhiteLightning)These are Edge-ified Flyers sweaters of the 80's...

Philadelphia Flyers concept (by Kevin)Kevin Edge-ifies the black alternate from the 90's and adds an extra detail on the sleeve. I'm not in favour of that move. To me it looks like the orange outline has started to leak down the sleeve.

Philadelphia Flyers concept (by Mason H.)Mason sent this to me before yesterday's Rangers reveal, but it looks quite similar. I'd also suggest that this looks as good, if not better as a Flyers sweater! I've said before that this striping template works for almost any team and this concept seems to prove that theory correct. I give it a COTW nomination!

Don't forget to vote and leave feedback on the questions asked at the top of the post.

Week of Nov. 28 - Dec. 4, 2011

The Rangers unveiled their 2012 Winter Classic sweaters moments ago. Here's a look at them.My instant analysis is that they are one of my favourite Classic sweaters yet. Not quite as good as the 2010 Bruins, but pretty close. The vintage white even seems a little more subtle than I expected and I think it will look really good on the ice. I will have the blank template and more reaction to this sweater posted tomorrow. In the meantime, what do you think of it? Out of 10, what would you give it?
The COTW nominees are now listed on the left side of the page. There were lots of nominations this week, but these 5 were the ones that were "seconded".The nominees' concepts can be seen on the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK page. We're going to need a lot of Committee Members to vote this week if we don't want a tie. Thus, Committee Members get your COTW vote in before Thursday @ 11:59pm EST.

The votes have been cast and here are the official DHL jerseys for the Montreal Maroons and California Golden Seals.

Weekend Update

I went down to the Toronto Maple Leafs equipment sale today, I was pretty disappointed. Not by the selection, but by the fact that Leafs' dressing room access was promised, however there was a Prince concert scheduled for tonight and that access was denied. How far in advance are these concerts scheduled? This couldn't have been avoided? What was their compensation for this false advertising? A ballot to enter a draw to possibly win a pair of Leafs tickets. Great prize, but no good enough when we were all supposed to go into the room and only 4 people will win tickets. Oh right, Colby Armstrong was also there to sign autographs.

Either way, I did make a small purchase.I bought pro stock practice socks and a mesh bag for tape, helmet, etc with a #29 tag on it (my goalie number). I was disappointed with the prices though. The socks and bag only cost $10 each, but everything else was too high. HEAVILY used gloves with the palm worn out were going for $125! Phil Kessel skates that were heavily used and cracked were on sale for $250. At previous Leafs equipment sales they had that kind of heavily worn stuff on separate tables costing between $10-$50.

Top 5 voting for the DHL Montreal and California entries continues until 11:59pm EST Sunday night. Committee Members get your votes in if you haven't already.

New York Rangers concept (by MasonII)Mason creates an Edge style jersey for the Lady Liberty logo. I think if all the stripes at the hem are going to be next to each other, then the arm stripes should follow the same pattern. I would suggest using the same shade of blue for the shoulder patches that is used on the jersey. Other than that, this concept is executed quite well.

All Star Game concepts (by Nevill)All Star Game jerseys like to be different and these certainly are different. I think that the gold by the armpits should have a little more shape to it instead of just being cut off with a straight line. I like the colouring around the laces, below the collar though. However, the black just seems like "black for black sake".

Carolina Hurricanes concepts (by Kyle C.)Kyle has replaced most of the black on the home sweater with grey. On the road sweater he's made some slight adjustments with the placement of the colours and he's added red yokes. I like the red home jersey as the increase of grey is good. On the white jersey, I think it would look better if the yokes were outline in black.

Calgary Flames concepts (by WhiteLightning)I think I've gotten a couple of concepts similar to this before. Full time retro home and road jerseys with a black version of the current sweaters using the horse head logo. I like the 3rd and the home and roads, but I am not in favour of the Flames going full on retro.

Calgary Flames concepts (by Matt M.)Matt has Edge-ified the white jersey the way it should have been done back in 2007. He adds a really nice red sweater to match. I like this set as the pants give the Flames a greater focus on red, which they had back in the 80's. COTW nomination from me!

Nashville Predators concepts (by Steven G.)Steven removes some piping off of the news Preds' sweaters and adds a nice simplified 3rd jersey. I think that 3rd goes really well with the set. Unintentionally, it looks very similar to Connor's COTY-July winning concept.
