A COTW Playoff!!!

Below are the results for the voting for COTW Apr 18-24.We have a tie! Brandon and Brian each tied with 42.9% of the votes! There's only one way to decide this, a playoff! The concepts will go up against each other. Voting is on the left side of the page and will run until tomorrow (Sunday) @ 11:59pm EST. The winner will be revealed on Monday.

New York Rangers concept (by Mason)In my last post I posted a Flyers Winter Classic concept by Mason. This is their rumoured opponent and Mason has also created a Winter Classic concept for them. I like it except for the vintage white collar. I think it should be blue but, that's just me.

Montreal Canadiens vs Toronto Maple Leafs concept (by Brandon)Last week, I put up a post featuring the Leafs-Habs rivalry. I made some suggestions in that post and Brandon executed them and sent these in.

Pittsburgh Penguins concept (by Brandon)Then on Monday I posted a Penguins concept by Brandon and suggested that it should be white instead of vintage white. So, he sent that in too.

Toronto Maple Leafs concept (by Jack)Several eras come together here to create Jack's concept. Numbers are from the early 2000's, stripes are from the '67 jersey and the logo is the 40's-60's logo. I like this because even though it's a mashing of eras it still looks like a classic Leafs jersey. This would be most acceptable as a new 3rd next season.

Heritage Classic concept (by Tex)Tex made this concept using an old logo I put together for a fictional Classic in Vancouver next year. He uses the old Millionaires jerseys, which the Canucks now own the rights to. Tex then used his very popular Sens concept, adding the rumoured shield shoulder patch. Tex made the game a colours vs colours match-up which obviously goes against NHL rules. However, I think it looks great and this is how it would have been back in the day of outdoor rinks and ponds.

Round 2 Predictions

The 2nd round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs starts tonight and it'll be hard pressed to match the quality of the first round. For an updated bracket board, my 2nd round predictions and to leave your predictions click on the PLAYOFFS 2011 tab.

Today is also the final day to vote for COTW on the left side of the page. It's a very close race between 1st and 2nd. So, if you haven't voted yet be sure to before 11:59pm EST.

Vancouver Canucks concept (by Jack)Jack does something a little different here with the stripes on the sides at the hem. The arms on the jersey are cool and I thought I'd like the green outline on the numbers but, now I see it and I think it's better plain.

Lethbridge Hurricanes concept (by Ryan)About a month or more ago the WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes began a contest to design their 2012-13 alternate jersey. I was going to send this in as my entry but, I didn't. Why? Fear of going up against concepts like the one you'll see next.

Lethbridge Hurricanes concept (by Joshua)When a concept comes from a local it obviously is going to have more meaning and effort behind it. Josh has done a great job creating a logo here and explaining all of the great features of the jersey. He also sent along a page showing a little bit of the process he went through to get to the final concept. I'm nominating it for COTW.

Philadelphia Flyers concept (by Mason)Mason intended this concept as a Winter Classic concept. He's taken elements from the old Philadelphia Quakers jersey and applied them here. Then he reversed the colours and used a little vintage white on the logo.

Vancouver Canucks concept (by Brian)We end where we began, with the Canucks. Brian, working on the same idea as his COTW nominated Pens white alternate, has created this Canucks white alternate from the early 2000's. Great looking sweater and I think it would look even better without the gradient.

Eric's KHL ReDesign Part II

It's Wednesday so we continue with the 2nd part of Eric ReDesign on the KHL. Again, the concepts are described in his own words.

BARYS ASTANA (by Eric)Double blue alert! Wait, though, I'll explain. Blue and white have always been Dynamo Moscow's colours. I figured that Barys using navy and white would be like the Washington Nationals wearing Yankee pinstripes. Double blue would make them look somewhat unique. The extra long shoulder yoke is based on the jerseys the team wore when they broke into the league. The waist stripes are there because...well, I thought they looked cool. Also, a silhouette of the Kazakh eagle - the national symbol - sweeps between the numbers and tail stripes of the home and road. The third incorporates some yellow for both contrast and national pride. (Yellow is one of Kazakhstan's national colors.) The NOB's are all for former fringe NHLers: Kevin Dallman, Jiri Novotny, and Lukas Kaspar.

VITYAZ CHEKHOV (by Eric)The design for Vityaz ("Warriors") incorporates grey into their current red-and-white color scheme. Striping influenced by basketball jerseys is used, with stripes looping underneath the armpits. The current logo is used on the home and road. The alt uses more conventional stripes, and is mostly grey. An original logo of a gladiator's helmet is used. The NOBs are for former captain Chris Simon, Vadim Berdnikov, and Alexander Komaristy.

CSKA MOSCOW (by Eric)Arguably the greatest team in Soviet history, commonly known as the Red Army team. For many years in Communist times, this team was basically the Russian national team. Now, although not nearly as dominant as in years past, they are still always ranked high in the standings. Their current jerseys are red with white and blue stripes and a blue shoulder yoke, trimmed in white. The blue shoulder yoke is out, and vintage white - which I usually hate - is used, because I felt it makes it look better. The current logo is used. The third is a simple blue jersey with red shoulders, and a CSKA wordmark diagonally down the jersey, like the Rangers. For the record, this design was finished a solid two months before the Rangers third was released. Any similarity is purely their fault. NOBs are for Yan Stastny, Jan Marek, and Slava Kozlov.

London Knights concepts (by Alan)
Alan takes the Knights unis and puts them on the Flames' Edge template. I know I don't mind them but, how will everyone else feel about them. That being said, I prefer what they wear now.

Youngstown State Penguins concept (by Tex)
I barely know anything about this team, other than they are an American university team from Ohio. Also, they have TERRIBLE jerseys currently. These would be an improvement by a 100 yards!!!! Check out their terrible jerseys HERE.

Buffalo Sabres, Concepts for Game 7

In support of the Sabres' game 7 efforts tonight I've got some Buffalo concepts. As a die-hard Leafs fan I would normally never cheer for the Sabres but, hopefully, this support will wear off on them and they can pull this one out on Flyers ice. Why support them? For a couple of reasons, first I have Buffalo in 7 games in my pool and I really need the points. Second, Buffalo is roughly only 90 minutes drive from me, if they were to make the Final I would try my best to get tickets. One of the items on my bucket list is to see the Stanley Cup presented live.

Portland Pirates concept (by Ryan)Ok, this first one isn't for the Sabres but, it is for their farm club. I used the current navy blue and the old 80's home jersey (with a few Edge adaptations). I created this a couple months back so I think I'd make a few changes now. However, I'd keep the jersey blue and gold as it has always bothered me that the Pirates never changed from black and red.

Buffalo Sabres concepts (by Mason)Mason gives us a white version of the 3rd jersey. I like the blue on the sleeves and the hem which enables him to continue to use the gold stripes. The blue yokes also give a nod to the old 80's jerseys. I like this jersey but not on the ice. I'd like to see it as a "limited edition fan's jersey".

Buffalo Sabres concepts (by Brian)Brian sent me these and titled it "fixing the Sabres". He's taken away the grey piping and arm pits. While I agree with Brian that they do not look good, it's my opinion that they are useless on the jersey as I think you can't see them. Brian respectfully disagreed with me and feels that they need to go. We both agree that the numbers on the front of the jerseys need to go away. What do you think about the piping and "pit stains"?

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Tex)I'm a fan of this one too as Tex does a nice job using the new Buffalo script on a white jersey. I love the gold stripes outlined in blue. The number under the wordmark also works quite well.

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Will)This is Will's first concept submission to HJC and it looks great. He's added a buffalo horns design to the helmet and added an extra sabre behind the B on the logo. I also like the use of a grey jersey here. The player's name is the current 3rd jersey font and the number is a custom font. Even though the font is custom is still has a classic look to it.

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Jack)I just got an email from Jack with a great Sabres concept so I thought I'd post it today being quite appropriate. I like this jersey especially that crest which gives the jersey a heritage look. I think I'd just get rid of the yellow outline and then add the red eye.

Week of April 25 - May 1, 2011

In case you missed it yesterday, the 1st Quarter COTY winner has been determined. Go to the 2011 COTY page to see the winning concept.

Last week's poll asked which Stanley Cup Final logo is your favourite. With 42% of the votes, the current logo was voted as the favourite.Good thing they've kept it for at least 3 years. Maybe it can stick around for a few more and actually gain some credibility.

In 2nd place was the original Cup Final logo with 25% of the vote. The other results were as follows; Early 2000's (15%), 2006-07 (11%), Mid 90's (5%).

This week's poll has a little fun and asks what is the greatest hockey movie of all time. Voting is on the right side of the page and runs until Sunday @ 11:59pm EST. No, that Van Damme movie that has some scenes at the Igloo doesn't count as a hockey movie!

The nominees are up for COTW April 18-24. You can see them under the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. Voting is on the left side of the page and runs until Thursday @ 11:59pm EST.

Nashville Predators concept (by Andrew)We celebrate Nashville finally getting out of the 1st round with this black 3rd jersey concept. Yes, it needs some work and a little more time taken on it but, you get the idea where this is going.

Colorado Avalanche concept (by Ryan)I've grown tired of Colorado's look more than anyone else's in the NHL. The jerseys looked great before the Edge era but, that look got severely lost in the transition. I think that with a new young team coming up, it might be time to re-brand into something different.

Minnesota Wild concept (by Mason)The green sweater looks great but, I think the numbers might get lost while the players are bent over skating, essentially making them useless. I do understand however, that using numbers on the front of a jersey is an effort to differentiate yourself from other team's looks.

Dallas Stars concept (by Brian)Brian gives the Stars back their green from the Minnesota days. He's used a small baberpole design on the shoulders which looks pretty cool. Simple hem and arm striping keeps the jersey from being too busy. Logo credit is given also.

Pittsburgh Penguins concept (by Brandon)I really like this jersey. I like the design on the side and the arm stripes have a good heritage look to me. Nice use of Robo-Penguin in the 1967 circle. My only complaint would be the use of wheat instead of white. I don't see a need for it (wheat) here. I'm going to nominate this for COTW.

HERE are the Sabres' 3rd jersey numbers for your concepts. They're probably a little big but, at least you got 'em now.

Concept of the Year - 1st Quarter Winner

The week long vote to determine the Concept of the Year - 1st Quarter winner is complete. You can view the results below. It was an EXTREMELY close race all the way through but the winner by one vote is me, Ryan with a retro All-Star Game concept. You can see the winning concept under the 2011 COTY tab. This concept was COTW for January 24-30, then won January's Concept of the Week vote and now just won the 1st Quarter vote. This concept is the first of 4 semi-finalist which we will determine with more polls throughout the year. This concept will go up against the 3rd Quarter winner later this October.

COTW Winner/Habs vs Leafs

The winner of COTW for April 11-17 is Glen with his Islanders fishsticks entry! The results from the vote are below.
Today is also the last day to vote in the Concept of the Year 1st Quarter vote. That voting is on the left side of the page.

This post will be updated later today so check back for more. To know the instant that the page is updated follow HJC on Twitter or "Like" the HJC Facebook page.

Montreal Canadiens concept (by Jack)Interesting look here from Jack. I don't think I care for the stripes being cut off on the arms yet, I don't mind it on the back.

Toronto Maple Leafs concept (by Brandon)I really like the striping on this jersey and the blue that is closer to navy than royal. I like the idea of the logo but, it looks a little busy.

Montreal Canadiens concept (by Brandon)Brandon's counter-part to the Leafs jersey is this one. He tries to bring back the candy striping but, with less of it on the jersey. I think it might work without the shoulder yokes.

Heritage Classic concept (by Ryan)Here I came up with a 2012 Heritage Classic. It wouldn't be an outdoor game being in Montreal's Olympic Stadium, as I believe that the roof is now sealed shut. Both team's jerseys are based on the early 40's.

Montreal Canadiens concept (by Jack)Jack uses the Habs' 1935-38 jerseys as Heritage Classic sweaters. I would have been happier if they used this instead of the half assed effort that they gave us.

Toronto Maple Leafs concept (by Tex)This is a Leafs jersey for a Heritage Classic also. Guess who Tex chose as an opponent...

Montreal Canadiens concept (by Tex)Just like Jack, Tex chose to use the 35-38 Habs jerseys. Interesting to see how people adapt old designs to the Edge template. Jack filled the hem with blue while Tex saw stripes at the bottom of the original. You be the judge (Original Jersey)

April 21, 2011

Last day to vote for COTW April 11-17 is today as the poll closes at 11:59pm EST.

Carolina Hurricanes concept (by Jack)Jack has taken the grey out of the Canes 3rd jersey and with a little white, has added some life to it. I like this version better than the grey one but, I prefer the grey shoulder patch. I don't know why, I just think it's pretty cool. I guess it's because you can't see it until you're close-up.

Phoenix Coyotes concept (by Ryan)What I wanted to do here was go back to an old concept and re-do it properly. The original is on the bottom left and it was made February 17, 2009. The shoulder patch is from the collection of rejected logos when the Coyotes were creating their alternate sweater in 2008.

Chippewa Muskies concepts (by Brandon)This is Brandon's first shot at creating a complete logo. Well done, especially for a first shot. The name of the team comes from a world record muskie which was caught in the area. The location is inspired by Brandon's upcoming trip. Just beacuse of the time and effort it takes to create a new brand, I'm going to put a vote in for COTW.

Buffalo Sabres concept (by Brian)Brian re-coloured the early 2000's alternate logo and put it on an Edge jersey. The only change I would make is to switch the gold and the grey on the jersey. I also like the Brian stuck with a classic block number.

Long weekend this coming up so it will be a little difficult to say for certain that there will be a post. I hope to have one up tomorrow at least. It will be a Toronto-Montreal post, so if you got concepts for that rivalry send them in and I'll post them.

Eric's KHL ReDesign

Today is the first installment of what will be a weekly series. Eric's KHL ReDesign will now be a Wednesday staple. We'll reveal 3 ReDesigns each Wednesday, right here at HJC. The descriptions are Eric's own words.

Amur Khabarovsk (by Eric)Don't worry, the home is as garish as this gets. The design I've made was influenced by 80's soccer jerseys. The color yellow was used about a decade ago by the team, pre-government ownership, so there is a historical precedent. The shoulder logo is the logo that was used once by team, pre-government ownership, only recolored to fit the new color scheme. The road jerseys are much more understated, using less radical striping, but identical fonts, and logos. The alternate is simply a blue version of the road jerseys. The logos are unchanged. The NOBs are for David Ling, Alexei Kopeykin, and Stephen Dixon.

Atlant Moscow Oblast (by Eric)The colors chosen for this team are the same as their older team - Khimik. Blue, red, and yellow are picked. The team's logos from the last few seasons are used on the home and road. An edited version of their new logo shows up on the shoulders of both the home and road. The third is a fauxback of a vintage Khimik jersey, with an original wordmark logo. The lettering is "ATLANT" in Cyrillic. The team's actual new logo is shown on the pants of the third. The NOBs are for Sergei Mozyakin, Jan Bulis, and Kyle Wellwood.

Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg (by Eric)I wanted to simplify the team's look, so I went with an 80's esque stripe pattern, using diagonal stripes. For the third, I admit to going black for black's sake, because quite a few of these teams have third jerseys the same color as their homes and I wanted some variety. The "A" logo loses its wings, and red and white swoosh stripes are used to recreate that effect. The flag of the Yekaterinburg oblast - the Russian equivalent of a province or state - is on the shoulder of the home and away, a la Calgary Flames. NOBs are for Alexander Gulyavtsev, Andrei Subbotin, and Vitali Sitnikov.

Florida Panthers concept (by Jack)
Jack has done a nice job here updating the red Panthers jersey. He utilizes both shoulder patches and has simplified the main crest somewhat. I like it, I think it could work. It's a lot better than what they have now (we say that a lot about the Panthers)

Boston Bruins concept (by Spirit104)
Spirit uses a stylized B as a logo here. It's pretty cool, it kind of reminds me of the Red Sox yet is not the same. This jersey suffers the same as the current 3rd, it's a little plain.

Pittsburgh Penguins concept (by Brian)
If you're a fan of the Penguins '95 alternates/roads, then you might love this also. Brian has created a matching home white. Wait, it has Crosby's name, does that mean it's a road white? I'm confused, either way, great idea.

Western Conference Concepts

Hope everyone is enjoying the playoffs as much as I am. I've gotten to sit down every night for the past week and watch great hockey! My wife probably isn't too thrilled with me but, it's the playoffs!!! I thought the Wings-Coyotes series was really going to be top notch but, it looks like I'm going to be disappointed. I am really enjoying the Pens-Bolts series though.

Dallas Stars concept (by Jack)
It looks like Jack has decided to abandon the green in the colour scheme and go with black, white, and gold. I think this is a good looking jersey but, I don't think it needs the collar laces. By doing that I think it just gets put into the category of laces for the sake of laces.

Los Angeles Kings concept (by Ryan)I took the current logo and put the retro jersey purple and gold on it. I was excited at first but, now I think it came out looking like the Kings are trying to be the Lakers. Maybe not, what do you think?

St Louis Blues concepts (by Scott)Scott brings back the pre-Edge jerseys...somewhat. He's used white on the cuffs of the home sweater and uses the current 3rd jersey logo as a shoulder patch. Laces also find their way to the colllar.

With the Hawks on the brink of elimination I thought I would try and give their fans something not as dooming.

Chicago Blackhawks concepts (by Mason)Both jerseys are inspired by older and current uniforms. The top borrows from elements from the 1940-55 white jersey. I really love the shoulder patch on the arm bands, such as they did from 1955-59. The bottom jersey is based on the current home sweater, with two stripes removed at the hem.

Chicago Blackhawks concept (by Tex)Tex has Edge-fied the 1948-51 white jersey. On his concept though, he uses the stripes currently found on the white jersey.

A few HJC regulars also have their own blogs. Be sure to give a quick look at the following people's pages.
