Philadelphia Flyers jersey switch evidence?

NHL 11 (video game) posted a quick video a couple of days ago. See it here. Nothing much to the video, but I did happen to notice that Claude Giroux was wearing the Winter Classic Flyers sweater.
NHL 11 video screen cap
This may be nothing, but usually when the NHL video games release a video they don't "spoil" the special jerseys that are in the game. Usually the default jerseys are shown. Also, a default in the game is that when you first play it the head-to-head teams are the past participants of the Stanley Cup Final. So assuming that everything shown is a default this may confirm that Philly will wear the Winter Classic jerseys as road uniforms next year. Or I could just be talking out of my ass and looking like an idiot. You decide.

Vancouver Canucks and more! (not really, just Canucks)

Rumours are that when the Canucks open their season on October 9th against the Kings both teams will be wearing throwback uni's. Might it look like this?
Vancouver Canucks throwback uniform
Same rumours also say that these teams will continue to wear these sweaters periodically throughout the season! Of course when I say "rumours", I mean Icethetics Jersey Watch.

On the topic of the Canuckleheads, Brian sent in these concepts
Brian Brideau Vancouver Canucks concept
I like this concept. It would be a better 3rd than their current alternate, which looks too much like the home sweater. Nothing wrong with the jersey just from afar you can't tell which is which.
Brian Brideau Vancouver Canucks concept
This would be a good entry when the Canucks play in a Heritage Classic. It's extremely similar in style to the Vancouver Canucks of the old WHL. Perhaps Vancouver might come over to Toronto in 2012 for the next Classic?
Brian Brideau Vancouver Canucks concept
This one is my favourite. It makes the 80's jerseys look good. I think this would be a great 3rd. Or even a fourth jersey? NHL rules state that each team can have a maximum of 4 jerseys in rotation. Except if you're the stupid Habs and you're trying to jam your 100th anniversary down everyone's throat!

Story of Kansas City franchise

When Kansas City received their original franchise they were named the Scouts. They named the franchise after a statue that overlooks the city. Such as the previous Kansas City franchise, this one too is named after a statue.
Kansas City Express wordmark

A statue that stands in Pioneer Square in Kansas City features the likeness of Alexander Majors. Majors was the founder of the Pony Express, a mail delivery system that served from Missouri to California. Thusly, the team was named the Kansas City Express
Kansas City Express logo*Note* The horse is not mine. I did not draw it. I found it on Google a while ago and have changed the colours and used it here.

The Express play out of the Sprint Center which seats just under 19,000 for hockey. They wear the colours of green and orange to be different and unique from any other NHL team at the moment.

Just like the previous Kansas City franchise, the Express will use a "fused" KC logo.

Uniforms to come later.

New Kansas City concept brand coming soon!

Over the past week I've been working on a team concept for what I think will be the next city to receive a NHL team, whenever that may be. I think it will be Kansas City as they were lead to believe by whomever that the Penguins were going to move there around 2003/04. Well Crosby got drafted and the rest is history. Now Kansas City has a new arena built (Sprint Center) very hockey capable and nothing to fill it with except for concerts and conventions.

That is, until now. I introduce Kansas City's "new" NHL franchise, the Kansas City Express

It's just the curtain for press conferences right now, but believe me there is much more to come.

Check back sometime this weekend for more Kansas City Express concepts.

NHL Awards

For anyone that watched the NHL Awards last night, wasn't that a massive failure? It was so bad that I had to turn the channel at times. I thought last year's was bad, this was worse. I can understand the NHL wanting to make it a big deal, but taking the players out of their element and adding fringe celebrities that may or may not care about hockey ruins the thing for the true hockey fan.

I would prefer a 30-60 minute show where we see all of the awards presented, great highlights from the season and some recaps and analysis by the commentators/host. You can still have it in Vegas, but you can put the event outside so it shows off the town (or whatever). I liked the red carpet idea outside the event though. I think that was a keeper. That and this were the only good things about the show last night!

Old Teams, New Concepts

Today I finished up my Winnipeg Jets set. I showed the home red jersey previously. Now I have added a road white and a throwback blue.

Brian also sent in these great Edge concepts for the Hartford Whalers.
Hartford Whalers concept set
I'm sure if the Whalers were still around we would have seen something like this. I never was a fan of them using a blue jersey, but that alternate is great. Maybe a little too close to the Canucks though. Also, maybe the Whalers would have brought back Pucky the Whale as a shoulder patch. Here's hoping that the Hurricanes get into a Winter Classic and bring back Pucky!

This is just off the top of my head, but an interesting way to determine the Winter Classic participants would be as follows. Cities put their nomination in to be the host. When selected, by a process, they would then wait to see who their opponent would be. That would be determined by who wins the Stanley Cup the previous season. That's just a thought. I have no problem with how it is done currently.

P.S. There should be a trophy made for the winner of the Heritage Classic! I am now accepting concepts for such a trophy.

Concepts & NHL Logo Releases

Today, not only was the 2010-11 NHL schedule released, but logos for the Heritage and Winter Classics were unceremoniously unveiled. These foggy images appeared on
Winter Classic & Heritage Classic logos
I have no problems with the Winter Classic logo. It's not bad at all, but it doesn't compare to the '09 and '10 logos. I love the Heritage Classic logo. Perfectly Canadian! We'll see how good it looks in 3-4 years when we can compare it to other Heritage Classic logos. For what it's worth, here was my concept.
Heritage Classic logo concept

On the topic of the Classic, when will Toronto get to showcase the beating they can lay on the Senators? And when this massacre occurs maybe the two teams can wear something like this.
Ottawa Senators Heritage Classic jersey concept
Toronto Maple Leafs Heritage Classic jersey concept
The Sens jersey is based on the old Senators' 1930-31 sweater. I added collar laces for that vintage feel and used the current "O" logo.
The Leafs' jersey is based on the 1917 Toronto Blueshirts jersey. In the style of the Red Wings '09 throwback sweater, there are no numbers on the sleeve and the current logo appears as a shoulder patch.

Icethetics jersey watch has hints that this may be the 2010-11 alternate jersey for the New York Rangers.
New York Rangers 3rd jersey concept
Finally, PuckDrawn has posted my Grand Rapids Griffins design/entry and now I will share it here.

Isles, Avs and Caps Concepts

The season is over and now it's time to relax and forget about hockey for 2 months.....Haha! Yeah right! Now we get the draft and free agency on July 1st. Not to mention the new sweaters that will be revealed throughout the summer (or leaked info?) Plus rumours of struggling American teams moving to hockey starved Canadian cities and concepts for those teams. For myself, I don't actually accept that it is "off-season" until sometime in mid-August.

Moving forward, I think it is a pretty safe bet that the Islanders will be releasing this jersey at their draft party next weekend.
New York Islanders new road jersey
I forgot I had this jersey. It is from the old template I used. There are some across the web who want to see Colorado's Big Foot logo make its way onto a jersey as the main crest. I am not one of those people, however I did make a concept featuring said logo as the main crest.
Colorado Avalanche concept
The last concept features the Caps' "weagle". Washington won't have a 3rd jersey anytime soon, but we can continue to create concepts. They're usually blue and this one is no different.
Washington Capitals concept
Also, I encourage everyone to check out PuckDrawn's Grand Rapids Griffins logo/jersey contest. The winner will have their jersey worn for the New Year's Eve game and get their very own jersey. My concept is ready yet not likely to win. I'll post it when I have put the slight finishing touches on it and have submitted it.

Maple Leafs Show Off New Sweater

I'm sure most hockey jersey fans have already come across the news and photo of the new Leafs' jersey. So, I will give more of a commentary than recap the day's events.

To start with, maybe Phaneuf could have been a little more robotic during his press conference. He was all over the place up there! And did you see the giant smile on his face? Maybe he could tone that down a little. Excuse me, I now have to go clean up all that dripping sarcasm.

Secondly, maybe could have given us more than one photo of the new sweater? We didn't get a good look at the numbering (yet it looks the same as what's on the alternate). We didn't get a good look at the player's name font on the back. Maybe a close up picture of the vintage shoulder patch?

My opinion is that they have exclusive rights to sell the jersey at their new store until Saturday. We probably won't get any quality pics until the weekend. Just to peak people's interest so they'll come down to the new store and check it out. I'm fine thank you, I'll wait the week.

Some notes on the jersey. I was surprised to see a white collar. I had sent in a concept to icethetics with the Leafs using a white collar. Someone in the comments noted that the Leafs would never go to a white collar. Oddly, my concept looks very similar to the new sweater. Minus the outline on the numbers and the lack of laces. Hearing that the jersey was going to be very close to that of the mid 90's, I was surprised to not see cuff at the end of the sleeves.

Overall, I give the jersey an A+. I find nothing wrong with it. I'm not saying that because I'm a massive Leafs fan, I really do believe that this is one of the best jerseys in the NHL now.

Was that not the most awkward finish to a Stanley Cup Final ever?

Remember my post about championship gear that leaks out for the wrong team? It didn't take long this year...
Seriously, here is this year's generic Blackhawks championship logo.
I will try to find the logo that was on the hat (I really like that one) but it has not been posted digitally yet.

Columbus Blue Jackets concept

There are two upcoming third jersey to be released next season that really peak my interest. The Anaheim Ducks and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets allegedly, will introduce a new logo for their upcoming alternates. It will feature their trademark cannon which is "fired" after Jackets goals and as they jump on the ice to start the game.

With my awesome artistic skills *cough cough* I cut, paste and traced my way through and created this logo.
I had to do jerseys to go along with the logo.
The jersey temp is based on their original blue jersey and Team USA's 2010 Olympic jersey. I contemplated using laces, but too many teams are using them these days.

Bruins, Leafs and OHl concepts

I don't have too much time today so there won't be much explanation.

The first concept is a brown version of Boston's Winter Classic jersey.
It can't match up to the yellow sweater, but what can? This has a good vintage look, but there's no need for the Bruins to change anything about their current uniforms.

I usually don't do concepts from the CHL, but here I have done the OHL's Oshawa Generals.
The Gens used to wear blue as an alternate jersey, but switched to throwback as their alternate a few years ago. Just like when the NHL introduced the RBK Edge jersey, the CHL did not have any 3rd jerseys. Maybe next year they bring them back.

Speaking of next season. Howard Berger, a beat writer for the Leafs, posted on his blog about the upcoming changes to the Leafs' jerseys. Thusly, I did a mock up of what he wrote.
There's a few things in question. Like, what's the colour of the neck insert on each jersey and if the font for the player's names will match the jerseys of the mid 90's or the font on the current 3rd.
That's all. I'll try to have better posts throughout the week.

Stars, Caps, Penguins

Not much today, but here it goes anyways.

I wanted to get the Dallas Stars back in green, but I was trying to do something that didn't look exactly like a North Stars jersey. I see this as a mix between Dallas' 1994 jersey and Columbus' 2003 3rd jersey.
This didn't work as well as I wanted. I wanted the dark green shoulders to look more black and you only noticed they were green if you looked a little harder. Just like the Bruins Winter Classic stripes were brown, but on first impression many thought they were black. Any comments or criticism on this jersey are welcome.

I love classic jersey concepts and I couldn't resist the urge to do full body concepts of my 2011 Winter Classic jersey choices.
The Penguins are wearing old Pittsburgh Pirates jerseys.

I wanted to put the Caps in white pants, just like they had when they came into the league, but I knew most people wouldn't like that.

Please send along your comments about the green Dallas Stars concept. Or if you have or want to make a green Stars concept, please send them in and they'll be posted here.
